EXPECTATIONS FOR UNDERDOGS
In this years race our team hopes to achieve a
top-20 nish but above all establish a base for
future teams to be built around. This is our houses
rst time competing in four years, and we hope to
ensure that we are a yearly participant and future
contender in the race.
Bryan Medema, Phi Kappa Tau
Broken bones, cinder burns and eternal glory.
Ted Tarricone, Team Amalgam
Being a team of all rookies, I think we just really
want to get some experience racing the Little
Five. We will denitely give it our all but we have
no expectation of winning, for us its all about the
journey and the experience.
Paige Daumeyer, Anchors Away
We are looking to win the Dixie Highway Award this
year, awarded to the team that improves their quals
position the most during the race. Last year, Acacia
won the award and was able to nish an impressive
fth in the race after qualifying 30th. We have a
strong ensemble of riders this year, and if we ride a
smart race. Wright Cycling will have a good chance
to impress some people come race day!
Jack McMahon, Wright Cycling
The SDT bike team is so excited to be riding in the
race this year, and were really hoping to reach our
goal of being in the top 20 for our end result when
we nish the race. I think we all hope, as a team,
that we can compete competitively in the race while
having an amazing time together.
Leila Gorstein, Sigma Delta Tau
Basically, we want to improve from last year, and
since we have more vets returning and have been
working hard at the track, we are excited to see
what will happen.

SPRING SERIES RECAP
QUALIFICATIONS
After Beta Theta Pi rode
its mens qualifcation lap in
2:21.05 almost fve seconds
faster than the best 2011 qual
time at 8:50 a.m., 37 teams
tried to go faster. They failed.
Beta Theta Pis time stood,
and the team will be in the frst
position come race day. Its the
third time in the fraternitys
history that it has been the
pole-sitter for the race. The
defending champion Cutters
squad fnished fve seconds
behind Beta Theta Pi and
qualifed eighth.
Teter followed up a victory
in the 2011 Little 500 with a
victorious run in 2012 quals
and will be in pole position for
the frst time since 2009. Teters
time of 2:35.54 in 2009 is still
the record, but this years time
of 2:42.95 was good enough
to win.
INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIALS
With an Individual Time
Trials victory in sight, Delta
Tau Delta rider RJ Stuart nearly
fell victim to the dangerous
third turn, hitting the gutter,
but he steadied himself and
continued to win his frst
career ITT title.
His time of 2:18.65 is the fastest
since former Cutters rider Eric
Youngs 2:18.25 in 2009 and
the second-fastest since 2007.
On the womens side,
Kappa Alpha Theta rider
Kathleen Chelminiak improved
her time by six seconds
from her 2011 performance,
fnishing in 2:38.95. Teters Lisa
Hutcheson came in second,
ensuring that a Teter member
fnished in the top two for the
third consecutive year.
MISS-N-OUT
Chelminiak kept her
winning ways, as she
rebounded from her ITT
victory to outlast the feld in
the Miss-N-Out competition.
She led wire-to-wire, leaving
Delta Gammas Kayce Doogs
and Hutcheson behind her.
Chelminiak was the top
seed, and she was joined in the
top four by the other top-four
seeds: Doogs, Hutcheson and
Wing Its Melissa Moeller.
The mens fnal was flled
with lower seeds, such as No.
17 Sigma Chi rider Adam Fish
and No. 11 Sven Gartner from
Phi Delta Theta, but the victor
was No. 2-seed Steve Sharp.
Sharp stopped top-seeded
Stuart from sweeping the
individual events when he
passed him on the fnal two
turns of the last lap. It was
Sharps second career victory in
the event.
TEAM PURSUIT
It was a day of repeats for
the Team Pursuit, as both 2011
victors continued their success
in the 2012 edition of the race.
The day was doubly
repetitive for mens winner
Delta Tau Delta, as the team
faced Phi Delta Theta early in
the competition and in the
fnals. Though they lost to Phi
Delta in the frst meeting, the
riders from Delta Tau Delta
fnished frst in the fnals,
preserving their second win in
as many years.
With its victory in the
womens race, Teter had its
third consecutive Team Pursuit
win, and claimed victory in
the Spring Series. Both of the
previous times they have won
the Team Pursuit, the riders
from Teter have also taken the
championship on race day.
Alex McCarthy
Stars help 2011 teams to victory
In a year dominated by
an individual in both the
mens and womens races,
the stars led their teams
to victory. Seniors Caitlin
Van Kooten (Teter) and
Eric Young (Cutters) both
won the Individual Time
Trials and proved their
prowess on race day.
Van Kooten and her
Teter squad avoided an
early crash and ended up
lapping the feld with 50
laps remaining.
Tey coasted to victory.
It was the teams second-
straight victory and third
overall.
Te Cutters couldnt
avoid a collision, as a crash
in the 45th lap put them a full
lap behind the leaders. One-
hundred-thirty laps later,
however, they were back in
contention.
In the fnal laps, Young
waited as Phi Delta Teta
made three exchanges, and
on the third, which took
place on lap 199 , Young took
advantage, kicking into high
gear and crossing the line
frst. It was the Cutters ffth
straight win and 12th overall.
Before their teams suc-
ceeded on race day, Young
and Van Kooten found suc-
cess during the other Spring
Series events.
Neither team was the
pole-sitter. Sigma Nu quali-
fed frst for the men, and
Delta Gamma qualifed frst
on the womens side. Both
the Cutters and Teter quali-
fed second and donned yel-
low jerseys on race day.

THREE Drop a few Sour
Skittles into the sake.
FOUR Shake the bottle a little
bit, and fnd the sunniest,
hottest windowsill in your

Sake there, and distract
yourself with something else.
FIVE Forget about it for a few

THE DE-EVOLUTION OF THE COLLEGE STUDENT DURING LITTLE 500
OPINION

A LOOK AT BIKING JERSEYS
Its easy to tell a seri-
ous cyclist from a casual
one. Someone riding for
leisure or a little exercise is
drenched in sweat and try-
ing in vain to ride smoothly
as the wind catches his or
her T-shirt.
Serious riders, however,
are clothed in sleek, tight
cycling jerseys that do more
than simply look good, said
former Little 500 Race Direc-
tor Pam Loebig.
Tat cotton T-shirt
would get wet from your
sweat and just sit on you,
Loebig said. A cycling jer-
sey will pull that sweat away
from your skin, and then that
fabric dries quickly. It will
evaporate your sweat faster,
which is more comfortable.
Cycling jerseys also ft
more snugly, cutting down
on wind resistance. Cycling
shorts can also provide more
comfort to riders, as opposed
to regular shorts with con-
strictive elastic and slightly
uncomfortable waistbands.
On race day, Little 500
riders have used cycling jer-
seys for about two decades,
but in recent years, teams
have been using personal-
ized practice jerseys a great
deal.
Acacia rider Greg Bortz
said a large amount of
thought goes into the design
of these jerseys, whether
theyre for a Greek team or
an independent team. Aca-
cia tweaks its jerseys every
two or three years but always
keeps the distinctive black-
and-gold look, Bortz said.
I know with a fraternity,
your house colors, its a big
deal, Bortz said. Its def-
nitely a cool pride thing be-
cause our T-shirts for people
coming to watch us are al-
ways the same colors, too.
Alex McCarthy
Race-day jerseys more than just fabric
Its 8 p.m. March 26, in a
crowded Ballantine Hall class-
room, and Laura Bliss and her
RideOn teammates are ready
to choose their race-day jer-
seys their identity for the
Little 500.
Tey qualifed 17th, so they
get the 17th pick of jerseys.
Te solid-colored jerseys are
long gone, and the second-
year team with the black-and-
blue shorts is running out of
choices for jerseys. When the
opportunity to stand out in
the feld comes around, they
pounced on it.
Our strategy this year was
more to clash, more to make
us stand out more, Bliss said.
Its baby blue and hot pink,
so its going to look like a baby
shower exploded or some-
thing.
Sixty-six teams change
their identities each year at
this chaotic meeting, and ev-
erybody attends or else
they are docked a two-second
penalty. Te meeting has been
happening for years, but the
story of Little 500 race-day jer-
seys goes much further back.
When the race began in the
1950s more than three de-
cades before the womens race
was created the jerseys for
participating fraternities were
hand-stitched by members of
sororities, known as Little Five
sweethearts. Te jersey cre-
ation was the only role women
played in the race until the
genesis of the womens race 25
years ago.
In the 1990s, a local over-
supply of fabric provided a
huge change in the way jerseys
were supplied on race day.
Two local women who
owned a seamstress shop took
whatever extra fabric they
could fnd and threw it togeth-
er to make race jerseys. For-
mer Little 500 Race Director
Pam Loebig said the jerseys
would never cease to surprise
once they arrived.
It could be any color com-
bination, Loebig said. Te
Student Foundation would
have no idea what colors were
showing up, except they al-
ways made sure there was a
white, yellow and green. Other
than that, it was kind of a grab
bag.
Te white, yellow and
green jerseys still remain as
the top-tier jerseys come race
day, and solid jerseys are al-
most always the frst to go.
Tese hodge-podge jer-
seys were much appreciated
but didnt make great race jer-
seys, Loebig said. Tey didnt
breathe as well as profession-
ally made jerseys and resulted
in a lot of hot, sweaty riders.
Finally, in 2009, Loebigs
frst year as race director, the
,IU Student Foundation en-
listed the services of Canari
Cyclewear to provide the rid-
ers with high-quality and pro-
fessional jerseys to wear on
race day.
Some aspects of the jer-
sey selection never change,
though. Fiji still tries to choose
purple because its the house
color. Delta Gamma still tries
to grab something black.
And the teams and fans
alike still plan part of their
race-day experience on what
happens the night of the jer-
sey-selection meeting.
I know a bunch of teams
make shirts for the fans that go
along with the jerseys for the
race, so thats the day when
your identity basically is born,
Bliss said.
Alex McCarthy
Our strategy this year
was more the clash,
more to make us stand
out more . Its baby blue
and hot pink, so its
going to look like a baby
shower exploded or
something.

Underdogs look to take a bite out of the competition
O
n the weekend of April 16, 2011, all
eyes were on the track of Bill Arm-
strong Stadiumfor the annual run-
ning of the Little 500.
Tis past year, those eyes included the
likes of Lambda Chi Alpha rider TomBolling
and Alpha Epsilon Pi rider Robert Langer.
Instead of being on the famed track on race
day, the two painstakingly watched fromthe
stands, both having failed to qualify for the
race.
Tere were also people such as then-
freshman Courtney Roessler, who watched
the race from Bufalo Wild Wings with
dreams of participating inthe event one day,
and former Teter rider Dana VanderGenug-
ten, who watched the race at Bill Armstrong
Stadiumas a fan, not on the track as a biker
as she hadbeenonly a year prior.
Now, with only days to go until this
years Little 500, all four will be watching
the race again this time, though, from
the track in their teams respective pit, with
a guarantee that they will get to participate
in the main event of the worlds greatest
college weekend.

LAMBDA CHI
T
he long journey
back for Bolling
and the Lambda
Chi Alpha fraternity be-
gan March 26, 2011,
the day of the Little 500
Qualifcations.
Tat day, Lambda Chi
fnished its attempt with a
time of 2:40.31 . Little did
the riders know that had
they fnished 0.09 seconds
faster, they would have
been in the 61st Little 500
and not in 35th place and
out of the running.
Not qualifying for the
Little 500 was certainly a
learning experience, Bol-
ling said. We believe our
team was better than our
performance at quals last
year, so that was certainly
disappointing, but our
team has responded with
a refreshed, motivated
attitude.
It was that discontent
that drove the Lambda
Chi Alpha team to work
harder and become better
organized. When the rid-
ers took the track at Bill
Armstrong Stadium for the
2012 quals, their result left
no doubt on if they would
be in the race.
Lambda Chi Alpha
fnished in 11th place,
its highest in more
than 12 years, with a
time of 2:26.77 , secur-
ing a spot in this years
Little 500.
Te Little 500 is an
experience our riders and
brotherhood will remem-
ber for the rest of their
lives, Bolling said. It will
be a great day for Lambda
Chi Alpha, and we hope
to make the most of it by
performing our best in
the race.

THETA PHI ALPHA
W
hen Roessler came
to IU in fall 2010 to
be a member of the
schools swimming and div-
ing team, she never imag-
inedshe wouldbe preparing
for her frst Little 500, only
days away.
Te same can be said for
her teammates of Teta Phi
Alpha, a frst-year sorority
that will be competing in its
frst Little 500 on April 20.
Coming from all diferent
backgrounds, the Teta Phi
bike team members, much
like the entire sorority, have
bonded together as their
teamnears its frst race.
Te support from my
sisters is none other, Roess-
ler said. I havealways swam
and been a part of teams,
and weve had fans and sup-
porters, but nothing like the
support Ive gotten fromthe
girls. Teyve come to ev-
ery event and even practice
sometimes to cheer us on.
Its an incredible feeling,
having 120 friends coming
to watchyoucompete.
Because this is the frst
timefor themembersof Te-
ta Phi Alpha, riders and sis-
ters alike, this race will be ex-
tra special, a moment mark-
ing what they are hoping
could be the start of a great
history ahead. Roessler said
she andher teammates have
embraced their new family
and will be ready for the test
come Friday.
Tis sorority started just
this year, and for us to build
it so well and in such a short
amount of time is amaz-
ing, Roessler said. I think
the best way to reward the
girls with their hard work is
to have a team out there on
the track competing withthe
rest of the organizations be-
cause it shows howfar weve
come.
MELANZANA
V
anderGenugten is a
Little 500 champion
just not with her cur-
rent team.
Two years ago, Vander-
Genugten was a member
of the 2010 Little 500-win-
ning Teter squad. However,
she fell in love with rock
climbing and gave up bik-
ing, with the expectation
that she would never be
riding again.
Yet only months ago,
VanderGenugten met Rose
Mullaney and Christine Ball
through mutual friends,
and out of chance, the three
decided to make their own
biking team. Melanzana
Cycling was born.
Christine, Rose and I
took a training trip to Florida
over Christmas break, and
that was a great opportunity
for us to really get to know
each other and create the
friendships that we have
now, VanderGenugten said.
Beingsuchasmall team, we
do pretty much everything
together. Were very fortu-
nate that our friendships
have grownbeyondcycling.
During this years qualif-
cations, Melanzana fnished
its frst attempt in a fawless
efort, posting a 2:50.09 time,
ninth overall. No matter
what happens on race day,
VanderGenugten knows that
her teammates will put their
hearts on the line on the
track and, in her words, ride
hardandride smart.
It hasnt been a smooth
journey for us, but weve all
put a lot of efort into this
years race, VanderGenug-
ten said. I think were
stronger because of the chal-
lenges that come with being
a frst-year team.

A
lpha Epsilon Pi has
been in 35 Little 500
races, has had nine
top-10 fnishes and has
had one Little 500 title.
All of that history, how-
ever, came to an abrupt
end Jan. 23, 2008, when
IU banned the fraternity
for two years for a hazing
violation. Four years later,
AEPi is back. After failing
to qualify for last years Lit-
tle 500, the team fnished
19th in this years quals,
securing its spot after a
four-year wait.
It is very important
to (Alpha Epsilon Pi) that
we are in the race, Langer
said. It was a very big tra-
dition of our fraternity to
race in the Little 500 and
a great source of pride to
already reestablishing a
tradition of excellence in
racing.
In fact, Saturdays race
will be a culmination of a
long journey for Langer.
He is a senior who will be
riding in his frst Little 500,
after his father and uncle
rode for the same frater-
nity in the 1970s. For many
members and alumni of
AEPi, hearing their name
called Saturday will mark
the end of a long and
painful gap.
Hearing our name
April 21, for me, will be a
culmination of a dream
I had coming into IU my
freshmen year of some-
thing I wanted to achieve,
Langer said. But most im-
portantly, it will really be a
comeback for AEPi on the
Bloomington campus and
to hopefully build on our
success every year, making
us a top-tier team.

CINDER TRACK IS ONE-OF-A-KIND
BY ALEX MCCARTHY
alexmcca@indiana.edu
Tere are other high-
profle cycling races in the
world. Tere are other big
party weeks and weekends at
colleges across the country.
Tere are other big draws for
major musical acts.
One factor, however, that
Little 500 has that similar
events dont is a cinder bike
track. Its the only one of its
kind in the world.
Te race began on a cin-
der running track in 1951
when cinder running tracks
were commonplace. Te
track at Bill Armstrong Sta-
dium has stayed the same,
while many other tracks
are now asphalt, concrete,
Mondo or any number of
diferent surfaces.
Tis move from cinder
running tracks is a good one,
Little 500 groundskeeper
Steve McCutchen said.
I know in high school ...
youd try to run on (the old
cinder tracks), and it was
like one of those nightmare
dreams where you felt like
everything was in slow mo-
tion, McCutchen said. You
couldnt move.
Tough the move from
cinder worked for run-
ning tracks, the decision
to stay with cinder is nec-
essary for Little 500 races,
said Delta Tau Delta Coach
Ken Nowakowski .
I think theyve kept it
cinder just because of the
tradition of the race, Nowa-
kowski said. You wouldnt
be able to run the race the
way it is on any other sur-
face.
Nowakowski rode com-
petitively from 1975 to 1989
and was the head coach
and race director at the In-
dianapolis Velodrome for
14 years. Te Velodrome is a
concrete track complete with
steeply banked turns.
Te Little 500 track is
almost completely fat all
the way around, making
it necessary to slow down
around turns.
If you go full speed into
turn three and four, Nowa-
kowski said, youll end up in
Bedford instead of going into
the home stretch.
Te uneven cinder sur-
face also makes it a little
more dif cult to maneu-
ver, and the lack of bank-
ing makes it tougher to pass
riders on the outside during
turns, Nowakowski said.
During exchanges in the
Little 500, skidding on the
bikes is necessary. If it were
done on a concrete track, the
tires would be worn down
and the rider would strug-
gle to maintain control of
the bike.
Obviously, on the hard
surface, you would wear
down the tire relatively
quickly, and you would lose
control of the bike, Nowa-
kowski said. Not saying that
skidding on a Little Five bike
ofers you control. No, on the
contrary, it does not.
Nowakowski has coached
Delta Tau Delta since 2009 ,
so he has become famil-
iar with the racing condi-
tions on race day. He said
mishaps and crashes are
not only common on the
track but are almost ex-
pected, and the cinder sur-
face has both its advantages
and disadvantages.
If you were to stumble
and crash on a concrete sur-
face, its a lot less unforgiv-
ing than the cinder track,
Nowakowski said. Although
some people would prob-
ably question that if theyve
crashed hard and are picking
cinders out of their skin.
I know in high school
. . . youd try to run on
(the old cinder tracks),
and it was like one
of those nightmare
dreams where you felt
like everything was
in slow motion. You
couldnt move.

We like to listen to
electronic music.
Listen to music. The
Black Keys.
Rob Lee (non-riding)
The night before
the race I fall asleep
wearing my I-Pod and
visualizing the race.
I really focus on what I
want to accomplish.
Im a huge Shania
Twain fan. I honestly
wouldnt want to listen
to anything else.
Visualization is a big
thing.
We get into a quiet
room at frst, then our
coach walks in and the
house cheers us on.
Shots.
I sleep a lot. Mostly
our fans get us
pumped up.
Eat a lot of carbs and
watch the Thumbs up
for rock and roll video
from You Tube.
The feeling of wanting
to maintain the
tradition of Little 500
motivates us.
I read a lot of
scripture.
I listen to Chasing
Pavements through
headphones and punch
with boxing gloves.
I think about the
sweet taste of
watermelon and
Sammi.
I think of all the
competition that
there is.
Call Me Maybe.
I try to focus myself
and listen to intense
music.
Knowing were an
underdog and a strong
competitor is a big
motivator.
Hang out with the
team and listen to
music, stay calm and
mentally prepare.
I like to picture myself
at the race during the
last lap or two.
I listen to Afrojack.
I turn on either house
or hard rap music and
turn it up loud.
We try to stay relaxed
and focus on the race.
I listen to some house
music and run around.
Each weekend we go
out to dinner with each
other. Its simple but
good bonding.
I think of the people
I dont want to
disappoint.
We get together, talk
through the race, and
reminisce.
We listen to country
music.
I visualize my team in
the lead pack on lap
199 because anything
can happen then.
Were having dinner
with the frat the night
before.
I listen to music and
get in the zone.
We do chest bumps.
I focus on my goals for
the day.

THE FLAGS
THE RACE
The womens race is 100
laps , which is equivalent to
25 miles , while the mens
race is 200 laps , or roughly
50 miles . Both races are held
on the quarter-mile cinder
track in Bill Armstrong
Stadium . Entrants are
given one-speed Schwinn
bicycles . Teams are made
up of as many as four riders.
The riders treat the race
much like a running relay.
When a rider is tired, they
exchange the bicycle with a
teammate. Any full-time IU
undergraduate can ride in
the Little 500.
PITS
Each team will be assigned
a pit along the outside of
the track according to its
qualifcation position. These
pits are approximately 16
feet wide and 6 feet deep .
All exchanges and bicycle
repairs must be made
within these boundaries. An
exception is when adjacent
teams are exchanging
simultaneously; one team
may step beyond the
restraining line to complete
its exchange. Each team is
allowed to have a pit crew
not exceeding two persons
one in the pit and one on
the infeld with a bicycle.
THE LINEUP
The order of the starting
lineup will be determined
by the qualifcation times.
The teams will be grouped
into rows of three, starting
with the No. 1 pole position
team on the inside of the
track. All No. 1 riders will
be mounted and ready fve
minutes before the pace lap,
after which time no crew
member will be allowed on
the inside of the track.
PENALTIES
Teams guilty of violating
these rules shall be
penalized no more than 20
seconds. This time will be
spent in the penalty box
located near the starting
line. A black fag given to
the team shall indicate
that a penalty has been
imposed. Penalties include:
Impeding another team,
including riders and pit
crew: 10 to 20 seconds
Failing to observe fags:
two seconds
Illegal exchange from
bicycle A to bicycle B: two
seconds
Using more than three
pits for an exchange: two
seconds
Unsportsmanlike conduct,
depending on severity: fve
to 20 seconds
CHANGING RIDERS
Teams will be allowed to
change riders as often as
they wish, but they must
change a minimum of 10
times in the mens race and
fve times in the womens
race . Each bike exchange
must begin in front of the
pit of the team concerned,
and it must be completed
by the time the rider
taking over has reached
the far limits of the next pit
on the right. Should the
incoming rider fail to start
the exchange in front of
the correct pit, he or she
must continue around for
one more lap. If the rider
backs up, the team will
be subject to penalty. The
outgoing rider may use the
preceding pit to run and
gain momentum for the
exchange, but the actual
exchange of the bike must
take place in the correct pit
area.

We listen to music and
dance.
I love to chant to
music, sing Man in
the Mirror, and watch
inspirational movies.
I listen to Till I
Collapse by Eminem
and drink apple juice.
I watch race tapes
and listen to pump up
music.
The atmosphere. All
the people cheering
and seeing my team
makes me go faster.
We do love the 90s
music they play at the
track.
I drink a gallon of water,
carb-load, and hang out
with the girls and give a
lot of pep talks.
We all huddle around
in a circle and tell each
other that were going
to do great.
We dance.
Since its our frst year
we just psych each
other up and keep the
blood fowing.
We each have our
own playlist to get us
pumped up.
I imagine what I want
it to look like, then
work to make that
happen.
I listen to Lil Wayne
and Skrillex.
I watch Breaking
Away.
We defnitely like
to watch some
inspirational YouTube
videos.
We blast the music,
roll the windows down
and do frat laps around
North Jordan.
I try to think of it as
just another day on the
track.
I dont do anything
special. Im just
naturally excited.
Our team listens to a
pump-up mix.
We talk about how the
race is a huge college
opportunity.
Were going to watch
footage of the race the
night before.
We do a lot of
dancing.
I think were going
to get out of town for
a while. Relax, have a
good dinner, chill out.
The song Girl Fight
is on before we do
anything.
We sing Disney songs.
Cycling is the closest
thing to feeling like Im
fying.
We shut all the doors
in the basement, kick
everyone out and psych
each other up.
I like to listen to
music especially
mash-ups.
I do a lot of
meditation.
Were going to watch
Breaking Away to stick
with tradition and then
lay low.
Dancing with my team
before the race.
I like to listen to a lot
of electronic music.
The biggest thing is
getting a good nights
rest.
