INTRODUCTION

arcelona lies on a plain extending from the mountains to the sea between the Bess and Llobregat rivers. The municipal area has a population slightly over one and a half million, a figure which more than doubles when the outlying metropolitan area is included. It is Spains second largest city and the capital of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia. This international city enjoys a privileged situation on account of its geographical location in the northeast triangle of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as for its lengthy history and vigorous economic and cultural activity. One of the main defining features is the coexistence of two official languages: Spanish or Castilian, and the Catalan language, Catalonias own language.

EUROPEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN

Barcelona has sometimes been called a northern European city in a southern Mediterranean country. Catalans are generally considered, especially by the rest of Spain, serious, hardworking people, receptive to innovations and forever focused on economic progress. However, for northern Europeans, Barcelona has a marked Mediterranean character, not only because of its climate and beaches, but also for its devotion to enjoyment and pleasure in outdoor living. Armed with a spirit of being in the vanguard plus a high dose of civic-mindedness and rationality, the Barcelonese know how to combine these traits with a joy of living and a passion for festivals and traditions.

TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF HISTORY

It is hardly surprising that Barcelona is an open cosmopolitan city. Profoundly aware of its long history and proud of its rich heritage, the present-day city is also the product of diverse peoples and cultures which have left their imprint and shaped its character throughout two thousand years. Important vestiges still linger of the primitive Roman Colony of Barcino, founded in the first century B.C. in the area presently called the Gothic Quarter. The Middle Ages was a splendid period of city development and urban growth, when the powerful Aragonese empire extended

throughout the Mediterranean, establishing trade and cultural relations. In the mid-nineteenth century, the development project known as the Eixample was undertaken in response to needed expansion of the city outside the medieval nucleus. By the turn of the century, Barcelona was experiencing an emerging industrialization and a flourishing of the arts which contributed decisively to the development of the architectural and design movement known as modernisme (Catalonias version of art nouveau). Great works of leading modernist architects are evidence of this and have left their unique, unmistakable and personal stamp on the urban landscape. Barcelonas designation as host of the 1992 Summer Olympics prompted an upgrading of the city. This special sporting event not only meant construction and enhancement of the citys infrastructure and facilities, but Barcelona was also able to show the world its organizational skills, its passionate character and indisputable appeal.

WELL-CONNECTED
By Air El Prat International Airport is located only twelve kilometers from the city center. Train service connects the airport with Sants railway station every thirty minutes. Every fifteen minutes the Aerobs departs from the Plaza de Catalunya for the airport. The airport has three terminals: A, B and C. The shuttle between Barcelona and Madrid operates from terminal C about every thirty minutes. Annual passenger traffic on domestic and international flights exceeds thirty million. The airport expansion project currently underway will double its present capacity. By Sea The port of Barcelona has eight terminals, five of which are for cruise ships and three for regular

ferry lines. In 2002, more than 600 cruise liners with more than 840,000 passengers stopped at the port. Ferries are operated by four different companies and maintain regular service with the Balearic Islands and Genoa, Italy. A fast ferry between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca takes a little over three hours.

By Rail Eight daily trains connect Barcelona with the capital of Spain. International lines include the Eurocity to Montpellier (Cataln-Talgo, daily); Paris (Joan Mir" train, daily); Zurich ("Pau Casals" train, four trains per week); and Milan ("Salvador Dal" train, three trains per week). The central railway station is the Estacin de Sants. The regional rail service of the Generalitat has two main lines connecting Barcelona with Sabadell and Terrassa, and also with Montserrat. A third line provides urban service within the city in addition to the underground network called the Metro. By Road The AP-7 Barcelona-La Jonquera highway links up with the French motorway system.

A TOURIST CITY
This two thousand year old vibrant city, with its own language, Catalan, and special culture, has become a leading tourist destination in recent years. The yearlong benign climate with temperatures averaging around seventeen degrees Centigrade, the extraordinary wealth of its architectural and artistic heritage, and the unceasing activity in all areas of economic and cultural development attract more than three million visitors each year. Hotel capacity is approximately thirty-five thousand, a figure that increases steadily with the addition of new establishments.

Urban Public Transportation Barcelona has eleven thousand taxis identifiable by their characteristic yellow and black color. Taxis can be found at specially marked taxi ranks or simply by hailing any passing vehicle with an illuminated green rooftop light. The ample public transport network has five subway or Metro lines and a fleet of nine hundred buses covering all areas of the city.

Hailed as the indisputable capital of modernism, Spains version of art nouveau, Barcelona has five masterpieces in this particular artistic style designated World Heritage by UNESCO: Gell Park, Palau Gell, Casa Mil or La Pedrera, Palau de la Msica Catalana, and Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. To facilitate visits, the city offers many special services including a tour bus (Bus Turstic), Barcelona Card, Art Ticket, Art Nouveau Route (Ruta del Modernisme) and Walking Tours. Barcelona strives to make visitors feel welcome.

City Walking Tours

The best way to really get to know a city is to walk leisurely up and down its streets and around its plazas. Focusing all the senses on a citys physiognomy to discover the character of its people and its historic and artistic legacy awards an inquisitive traveler with a very gratifying experience. A total of nine walking tours through the city have been proposed. With the exception of the route devoted to the

visionary architect Gaud, all the others are based on geographical criteria and may be totally or partially covered on foot. Before beginning a tour, we recommend dropping in at one of the Tourist Information Offices in the city. Here, visitors can check on opening times, consult timetables and learn about all the services available, such as the tour bus (Bus Turstic), a convenient and comfortable way to view the principal sights of interest.

Gothic Quarter
The true heart of the city is the Barri Gtic or Gothic Quarter. Roman Barcino was founded here, and since then, the area has been and continues to be the supreme historic, religious and political center of the city. It presently occupies approximately what in Roman times was the area of the colonys fortified enclosure. Up until the beginning of the twentieth century, this area had been known as the Cathedral district. An ambitious reform project by City Hall, including the construction of some neo-Gothic elements to enhance this monumental

ensemble, gave rise to the present name of Barri Gtic or Gothic Quarter. An unhurried stroll through these pedestrian streets and squares is absolutely indispensable to appreciate its ancient history, often livened up by the presence of spontaneous musicians, fairs, flea markets or some type of festive event, such as the sardanes (a popular Catalonian dance in circles, to the tune of the cobla or orchestra) held every Sunday at midday in front of the Cathedral. Its time to begin this short but compact route at the steps leading to the Cathedral (1), a Gothic church built in the fourteenth and

Continuing ahead on Carrer del Bisbe, the first street on the right leads into one of the citys most charming squares called Plaza de Sant Felip Neri (4). Here we find ourselves captivated by a lovely patio with a fountain in the middle whose spouting water provides delicate background music. We return to the Cathedral through the other exit on the square, proceeding into the Cloister (5) by the Santa Eulalia door. The chapels around the cloister are devoted to different saints, who were patrons of the old artisan trade guilds, a subtle reminder of their influence in the Middle Ages.

The Cathedrals cloister has a certain kind of magic, with its central garden of magnolias and palm trees, where thirteen geese waddle around contentedly. The number thirteen is in commemoration of the child-martyr, St. Eulalia. We depart through the Puerta de la Pietat (Door of Pity), opposite the cloisters magnificent little Gothic temple. On narrow Parads street, the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya building houses four ancient Corinthian columns belonging to the old Roman Temple of Augustus (6). fifteenth centuries, although the principal faade was not finished until the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to the generous contribution of a rich banker. Notable in the spacious interior are the Chapel of Cristo de Lepanto, the magnificent choir stalls and the crypt of Santa Eulalia, one of the citys patron saints, along with the Virgin of La Merc (Our Lady of Mercy). Take the elevator near the apse for an amazing view from the cathedral roof. At Plaza Nova, we see the twin towers of the Roman walls (2). At the foot of the towers, we

notice the seven bronze letters of Barcino, in honor of the old Roman colony. These well-preserved towers framed one of the four main entrances to the walled precinct. Passing between the towers on Carrer del Bisbe and on the left, opposite the chapel devoted to Santa Luca, is the Casa de lArdiaca (3), former dwelling of the Archdeacon of the cathedral. The building originally dates from the eleventh century but has undergone numerous repairs. Stop and see its handsome courtyard with a palm tree peeking out over the faade.

La Rambla
The famous pedestrian street of La Rambla is a long, colorful boulevard zigzagging slightly through the old quarter like a lifeline, linking the centrally-located Plaza de Catalunya to the harbor. A busy communications hub and important commercial area, the spacious plaza is a good starting point for our walk along Barcelonas most emblematic and cosmopolitan street. Underneath the square is the Tourist Information Office. La Rambla is like an animated street theater with a kaleidoscope of curious characters; a people-watchers paradise and microcosm of unceasing activity at any hour of the day and night.

The name Rambla comes from an Arabic word meaning riverbed, an allusion to the old natural water canals leading to the sea. La Rambla is many streets in one, and its name changes at each different section, one of the reasons why it is popularly referred to in the plural as Las Ramblas. Our walk takes us down towards the sea, and so we will begin at the Rambla de Canaletes (9), the section nearest Plaza de Catalunya. Drinking from Canaletes fountain is said to ensure a return visit to Barcelona. Next, Carrer Tallers takes us into the district of El Raval. The chief attractions here are the Centre de Cultura Contempornia (CCCB) (Center of Contemporary Culture) (10)

viewed at no charge. Nearby, in the Plaza del Rei (7), is the noblest ensemble in the medieval quarter. Located here are the different sections of the former royal palace of the Aragonese empire: the splendid Sal del Tinell, the Royal Chapel of Santa gata and tower-lookout, today part

of the Museu dHistria de la Ciutat (Citys History Museum), including the Roman ruins extending under the square, all of which can be visited. Our walking tour comes to an end at Plaza de Sant Jaume (8), the administrative center of the city and site of the Ayuntamiento (City Hall) and Palau de la Generalitat, Catalonian Regional government offices.

Back on La Rambla, and after passing the small street of Bonsuccs, at once we see an interesting building on the right: the Academia de Cincies i Arts (Science and Arts Academy) (12), which now houses a theater. We are now on the Rambla dels Estudis (13). The name of this stretch was taken from an old academy. The sound of birds and other little animals is one of the surprises along this section of the boulevard, scattered with stalls selling small caged creatures. La Ribera
The district of La Ribera is one of the most charming and beloved areas in the Ciutat Vella, the old quarter of Barcelona. During the Middle Ages, it was the center of the trade guilds, commerce and shipping in Barcelona. Today, there are many testimonies to its vibrant past. Many streets still bear names of the craft or trade carried out there in the past (Vidriera glassmakers, Plata silversmiths, etc.), as well as the Llotja de Mar, headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. Even though the faade was remodeled in the neoclassical style at the end of the eighteenth century, the interiors perfectly-preserved Gothic halls bear witness to the

commercial and maritime power of Barcelona during medieval times. Recently, the neighborhood has attracted numerous small artisan workshops, almost as if history was being paid a tribute. Remodeling of old buildings and the existence of numerous small restaurants and bars have added special charm to this area. Our itinerary begins on Calle Argenteria, a street leading from the busy Via Laietana to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar (25). Laietana refers to the Iberian tribe of the Laietani who settled here before the Romans. During the first half of the twentieth century, the street was laid out in a straight line crossing this part of the old city in order to manage traffic and

La Boqueria Market

Between the streets of Hospital and Boqueria, our eyes are drawn to the pavement by the mosaic by Joan Mir (19), another landmark on La Rambla. At the corner on the left is a curiously original building with umbrella motifs and a Chinese dragon decorating the faade, the Casa Bruno Quadros (20). Next comes the Liceu (21), Barcelonas grand opera house. Although rebuilt several times, it continues to be one of the symbols of the city. The unassuming faade fails to reveal the elegant interior. A little further, after turning right on to Calle Nou de la Rambla, we discover one of Gaudis masterpieces, the mansion called Palau Gell, (see Gaud route). Nearer the sea, we encounter another

exhibition center, the former Convent of Santa Mnica (22). There is a cultural information office of the Generalitat on the ground floor. At the end of the Pasaje de la Banca is the Museu de Cera (wax works) (23), a museum with more than 360 famous wax figures waiting to greet the visitor. For an uplifting finale, take an elevator ride to the observation gallery of the Monument to Columbus (24) for an outstanding view of the city and harbor.

On nearby Calle Comer, there is an unusual museum called the Museu de la Xocolata (32), a treat for all chocolate-lovers or anyone interested in the history of chocolate. We set off for Calle Montcada, an area of narrow streets populated by stately mansions. Mandatory here is a visit to the Museu Picasso (33), a jewel of a museum housing a major collection of Picassos early works, as well as some from other periods, such as Las Meninas series, inspired by Velzquezs masterpiece. Also on the same street, there are two other interesting museums, namely, the Museu Txtil i dIndumentria (34)

connect the Eixample area to the port; a very complex feat of urban planning. The Church of Santa Maria del Mar, better known as the Cathedral of La Ribera, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Catalonia. Built entirely in the fourteenth century, the harmonious proportions and serene grandeur of this ensemble create a powerful impact. Off to one side of the church, in the direction of the Paseo del Born, there is a small square that holds special historic significance, Fossar de
16

les Moreres (26). It used to be the church cemetery a long time ago, and it is said that Barcelonas war heroes of September 1714 were buried here after the city fell to Felipe Vs troops. At the end of the avenue, we see the former Mercat del Born (27), a large ironwork and glass structure that once housed the central fruit and vegetable market up until 1971. Behind the market is Ciutadella Park (28), one of the citys green lungs. Here, we also come across the Museu de Zoologia (zoology museum) (29), a greenhouse called the Hivernacle (30),

displaying textiles and garments, and the Museu Barbier-Mueller (35) of pre-Colombian art, installed in the Palacio del Marqus de Lli, a lovely sixteenth-century building. The elegant old houses and mansions along the street stir up visions of aristocratic life in Barcelona centuries ago.

The Waterfront
Today, it can be safely said that Barcelona has been happily reconciled with the sea. Even though Barcelonas history is intimately linked to the Mediterranean Sea, it is also true that the city turned its back on the sea for a long time. Activity in the port focused on the traffic of goods, and the coastline was lined with abandoned factories languishing by the railroad tracks. When Barcelona was chosen in 1986 to host the 25th Summer Olympic Games, the idea of opening the city up to the sea became a great challenge for municipal authorities. The goal has been accomplished, and today the harbor has become a port of call for cruise ships,
18

inaccessible beaches have been recovered, and the waterfront has not only become a haven for leisure and entertainment, but also a residential area. A tour should start at the beginning, where great ships were built in the Middle Ages for maritime trade: the Reials Drassanes (36) in Plaza Portal de la Pau. These medieval shipyards, an imposing example of civil Gothic architecture, house the Museu Martim, a tribute to the sea meriting a visit. Rising in the center of the square is the cast-iron Monument to Columbus (see La Rambla route), with an elevator up to the narrow observation gallery for a breathtaking view of the harbor and the city.

For a closer look at the sea, sightseers can go for a boat ride around the port in the popular Golondrinas (37). A promenade leads to the Maremagnum (38), a large leisure and recreational complex with a variety of shops and restaurants. Here, we also find the Imax Omnimax theater, as well as LAqurium (39), a voyage to an underwater world. We continue to Port Vell (40), opposite the Palau de Mar (41), a large brick building that has been totally restored with delightful outdoor terraces to sit back and savor a good meal. Another interesting alternative is a visit to the modern, interactive museum of the citys history, called the Museu dHistria de Catalunya.
20

From here, the Passeig Juan de Borbn leads to the beaches of Barceloneta (42), the fishermens quarter of straight narrow streets. Strolling along the waterfront on the Paseo Martimo, we come to the Puerto Olmpico (43), the new marina that extends to the twin skyscrapers: one a luxury hotel and the other, an office building. A haven for various water sports, especially sailing at the Municipal Sailing School, and an abundance of restaurants and bars make this area one of the liveliest spots in the city. The port is also the center of the Villa Olmpica (44), the new residential area consisting of over two thousand dwellings and garden areas, which completely transformed the

Port and Maremagnum

appearance of the neighborhood. A tall brick chimney stands proudly among the buildings and has been preserved as a testimony to the areas industrial past. Likewise, the wood covering the grand central pergola on Avenida Icaria (45) calls to mind the old railroad tracks that have been dismantled to make way for new construction.

The rejuvenation efforts of the waterfront do not stop here but continue in the vicinity of Diagonal Mar (46), the venue for the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2004. New convention facilities, hotels, commercial centers and housing are planned. Nobody can doubt now that Barcelona has opened up to the sea and has regained its Mediterranean calling.

must bear in mind that it influenced all walks of daily life, from furniture and jewelry design, to music and painting. Likewise, not only were grand public buildings and elegant mansions erected, many small businesses, for example, still preserve the characteristic features of this style. A lengthy list of modernist works can be obtained with the ticket of the Ruta del Modernisme, a municipal initiative to facilitate identifying and visiting modernist buildings and places of interest. Before commencing our walk through the Eixample, we must first stop off at the Palau de la Msica Catalana (47), the supreme achievement of modernism which has masterfully combined applied decorative arts with architecture. This concert hall, designed by Catalonian architect Llus Domnech i Montaner and built between 1905 and 1908 as
Casa Lle Morera

permanent home of the Orfe Catal, is a symbol of Catalonian culture, art and music. Even if you dont have tickets for a concert, you can join one of the guided visits to see this modernist treasure, declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. After strolling through the pedestrian shopping area along the streets of Comtal and Portal de lngel, we come to Plaza de Catalunya, the communications hub joining the old city and the Eixample. The boulevard of Passeig de Grcia is the main thoroughfare. The first neoGothic houses encountered on this walk give an idea of the architecture characteristic of the early twentieth century. Between the streets of Consell de Cent and Arag is the famous manzana de la discordia (block of discord; a play on

of decorative details and originality exuding from these buildings; three masterpieces by three remarkable Catalonian architects of the modernist style. A short distance down the street of Arag, the Fundaci Antoni Tpies (50) opens our eyes to yet another modernist creation by Domnech. Conceived initially as the site of a publishing house, it currently houses this contemporary Catalonian artists collection. Notice on top of the building a gigantic wire sculpture called A Cloud and Chair. On the corner of Paseo de Grcia and Calle Provena, we come upon the most amazing building yet, Casa Mil or La Pedrera (see Gaud route).

words, manzana also meaning apple); so-named because of the contrasting architecture of three of its buildings: Casa Lle Morera (48), by Domnech i Montaner; Casa Amatller (49), attributed to Puig i Cadafalch; and Casa Batll, (see Gaud route). Come closer and look carefully at the profusion

Casa Terrades

24

At number 442 Avinguda Diagonal is the Casa Comalat (51) by Salvador Valeri, with a striking rear faade on Calle de Crsega and crowned with a hat that is reminiscent of a harlequin. Continuing along Diagonal, we run into the imposing Casa Terrades (52) by Puig i Cadafalch. This medieval palatial building occupies an entire triangular block. The various pointed towers crowning the edifice have prompted its popular nickname of Casa de les Punxes (House of Points). At number 108 Paseo de Sant Joan stands another mansion by the same architect, Casa Macaya (53). It belongs to la Caixa Foundation and is open to the public.

From several blocks away, we can make out the towers of the spectacular Templo de la Sagrada Familia (See Gaud route). If we take Avinguda Gaud, the middle of which is a pedestrian walkway, we come to one of the most impressive modernist ensembles: Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (54), a public hospital designed by Domnech i Montaner. It occupies a plot equal to nine city blocks of the Eixample. Forty-eight pavilions are distributed among the spacious garden areas for visitors to walk through (without having to be a patient). Check times of guided visits to this World Heritage site.

Gaud
Barcelona would not be the same without the distinctive mark left by the works of Gaud. Considered by many to be the genius of modernism, the truth is Gaud represents a separate case and is in a class by himself. His architecture appears within the framework of the modernist period, but the unique character of his creations and the introverted and mystical personality of the architect himself set Gaud apart from the rest of his contemporaries. Antoni Gaud was born in 1852 into a family of boilermaker craftsmen in Reus in Tarragona province. The time he spent observing nature as well as the artisan work of his father would leave an indelible mark on the architects future creativity. Gauds work is not only the result of a runaway imagination, but also endless practical work and experimentation with all types of materials, leading to innovations in building structures and sculptural forms unprecedented at the time. A chronological list of Gauds works in Barcelona will give readers an idea of the evolution of the great architect.

Casa Vicens (55), at number 18 Calle Carolines in the Grcia district, was the first important work designed by Gaud, built between 1883 and 1888. Commissioned by tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens, its style was inspired by Moorish Mudjar art and artistically combines stone, brick and ceramic tiles. This early house is privately owned and can only be admired from the outside. The pair of pavilions of Finca Gell (56) on Avinguda de Pedralbes was commissioned by a wealthy, upper middle class businessman, who would become Gauds good friend and benefactor, Eusebi Gell, a name permanently linked to the architect. Built at the entrance to the estate, the pavilions were intended for the stable and guardhouse. They now house the offices of the Gaud Chair of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The impressive wrought iron gate is particularly eye-catching, with its fierce dragon standing guard over the entrance to the garden of Hesperides. Palau Gell (57), on Calle Nou de la Rambla, is an opulent mansion Gaud constructed as a residence between 1886 and 1888 for his most prominent patron, Count Eusebi Gell.

At number 48 Calle Casp, we find Casa Calvet (59), finished in 1899. Although it had to be squeezed between older blocks of houses, Gauds most conventional building still shows typical Gaudian-style elements. The Church of Colnia Gell, twelve kilometers from Barcelona, is considered by many to be one of Gauds most original works. Although the project was begun in 1898, work was interrupted in 1917, and only the crypt was completed. Casa Batll (61), on the famous city block known as the block of discord of Passeig de Grcia, emphasizes the sculptural and decorative aspects of Gaudian architecture. Although the edifice was not actually built by Gaud, he completely transformed it in 1906. Casa Mil or La Pedrera (62) stands on a corner lot of Passeig de Grcia as if it were a gigantic sculpture in which curves prevail. This residential apartment building was Gauds last work of civil architecture. Built between 1906 and 1910, it was commissioned by the textile industrialist Pere Mil. A ticket includes a visit to the startling loft formed by 270 parabolic arches of flat-laid brick, the incredible multi-leveled roof with warrior-like chimneys and ventilators, and

one of the large apartments decorated in early twentieth century style. The informative exhibit in the loft helps convey the scope and genius of Gauds work. To say a visit here is worthwhile is definitely an understatement. The Basilica of the Holy Family (Templo de la Sagrada Familia) (63) was undeniably Gauds masterwork to which he devoted more than forty years of his life, from 1883 to his untimely death in 1926. He began the four towers of the Nativity faade, an amazing gospel put

unexpected mysterious feeling. The shape and colors of the windows are reminiscent of butterfly wings. Nature was always a great source of inspiration for Gaud. Gell Park (60) was originally envisioned as a residential English-style garden city, hence the word park, but the initiative was unsuccessful and only a few model houses were built. One of them is now used as the Gaud House-Museum and was inhabited at one time by Gaud himself. Gell donated the land to the City in 1923, and since then it has been a public park. The imaginative integration of architectonic elements in a natural setting holds in store myriad visual surprises for the visitor.

to stone and ceramics, but lived to see only one of them finished. Construction on this emblematic and monumental temple continues today, financed exclusively by anonymous donations and contributions from visitors. The final project consists of eight towers, the tallest rising to a height of 170 meters. The sheer magnitude of Gauds project has made the Sagrada Familia the citys most famous landmark. Its master architect was said to have remarked: Barcelona will be known for this temple.

The high hill of Montjuc, an authentic green lung, is a reference point for culture, sports and entertainment in the city. Theaters and museums, sports facilities, fairground pavilions, fountains and gardens, make this spot an obvious meeting point and place to visit. Two international events have helped transform Montjuc: the 1929 Worlds Fair and the 1992 Olympic Games. Their legacy has been an infrastructure constantly used and enjoyed by Barcelona residents. Consult the calendar of events, and you will find many reasons to visit Montjuc.

There are several ways to get to Montjuc hill. We suggest starting out at Plaza d'Espanya. The two Venetian towers (64) of the trade fair complex frame an impressive view of Avenida Reina Maria Cristina with its series of steps leading up to the Palau Nacional. The evening performance of water, music, color and light of the Magic Fountain (65) in this setting is a stunning spectacle. It operates from June to September on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and from October to April on Friday and Saturday evenings. Escalators can be taken partway up the hill to the Palau Nacional (66). This grandiose building with its

Worlds Fair, today it is a center for recreation and traditional crafts. A fun way to get to Montjuc hill is from the Metro station of Parallel. From here, a modern Funicular (70) railway trundles up the hill to Avenida de Miramar. Two options are now possible: the first is a visit to the Fundaci Mir and Anella Olmpica, and the other is to go up to the castle. To visit the latter, all you have to do is cross and go to the cable car station to catch the Cableway (71) and climb into one of the little red baskets that will whisk you up to the fortress, Castillo de Montjuc (72). The exhilarating ride affords spectacular views along the way. If proceeding on foot is more appealing, definitely a more cultural and architecturally-oriented choice, look for Avenida de Miramar and the contemporary white building of the Fundaci Joan Mir (73), a striking work by the architect Josep Llus Sert.

Montjucs Magic Fountain

Poble Espanyol

used for formal acts and conventions. A visit to the Palau Nacional with its spectacular view down over the fairgrounds and fountains will be long remembered. At the same level as the Magic Fountain, at the start of Avinguda Marqus de Comillas, we find two outstanding buildings: one is the excellent reconstruction of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion (67), designed by this architect for Germanys exhibit at the 1929 Worlds Fair. Today this classic example of rationalist architecture can still be visited. Across the street from the pavilion, occupying an entire block, is the CaixaForum (68). This new Cultural Center of la Caixa
34

Foundation is installed in the former Casaramona textile mill, built in 1911 by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It is a splendid example of modernist industrial architecture. The sculptural entrance to the Foundation, consisting of two steel trees supporting a plate-glass roof, is the work of Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. Go inside and discover the surprises waiting in this cultural center. The same street leads to the Poble Espanyol (69), an interesting mock village beckoning visitors to stroll through its streets and squares with full-scale replicas of architectural structures from the different Spanish regions. Built also for the 1929

A visit to this museum will reveal the amazing work of this universal Catalonian artist, including a series of sculptures outdoors on the terraces. In addition to the permanent exhibition of works by Joan Mir, there is usually some type of temporary exhibit of contemporary art.
Joan Mir Foundation

Close by is the complex called the Anillo Olmpico, epicenter of the 1992 Summer Games. Within this Olympic Ring, we find the Estadi Olmpic (74), stage of the magical opening and closing ceremonies and the track and field events; the Palau Sant Jordi (75), a multi-purpose building and marvel of design and modern technology; Santiago Calatravas sculptural Telecommunications Tower (76); the Piscines Picornell (77), swimming pools open to the public with refreshing evening film sessions in the summertime; and the seat of the INEFC (78), the sports university designed by architect Ricardo Bofill. All of these facilities were settings of the 1992 Olympics, memories of which can be relived by visiting the Galeria Olmpica (79), located in one of the wings of the Estadi Olmpic. Plant and garden lovers may wish to visit Montjucs several attractive gardens.
Olympic Stadium

Of particular interest are the Botanical Gardens (Jardn Botnico) (80). Consult the guide published by the Institut de Parcs i Jardins. Lastly, a world of theater and cultural entertainment is another good reason to come to Montjuc. On Calle Lleida stands the renovated Palau dEsports (81), as well as the Ciutat del Teatre (82), a complex comprising the new site of the Teatre Lliure and Mercat de les Flors, in addition to the Institut del Teatre. On nearby Paseo de Santa Madrona, the Museu dArqueologia de Catalunya (83) takes visitors on a journey to distant periods of Catalan history. A little further on and we come to the gardens of the Teatre Grec (84), an open-air theater that lends its name to a summer festival of performing arts. (See the section on Cultural Activities.)

Tibidabo and Collserola

Approached from the sea, Barcelona appears to wear a luxuriant green crown discernible amid the woods bordering the northwestern part of the city. These are the Collserola hills, the highest point being Tibidabo, easily identifiable by a white basilica on the top. Mount Tibidabo has been a favorite excursion destination ever since an amusement park was built there with a funicular to take visitors to the top. The unsurpassed views from the summit give forth a multi-colored city, unfolding below and stretching to the sea. The numerous attractions in the large metropolitan park of

Collserola have turned this spot into a favorite for those who wish to take a breather from the asphalt but at the same time feel the beat of the city at their feet. At the start of Avinguda del Tibidabo, we can begin by hopping on the Tramvia Blau (85), a century-old blue streetcar that continues to operate as if a hundred years had not gone by. At the end of this ride, another charming means of transportation continues the rest of the way to the top, the Tibidabo Funicular (86). Looming above the Plaza del Tibidabo, the majestic Templo del Sagrat Cor (87) is surmounted by a golden figure of the Sacred Heart with an observation platform at the foot.

Benedictine community. The first printing press in Catalonia was installed here in 1499, and since then, the abbey has continued to publish all types of books and magazines. Particularly noteworthy is the Bible of Montserrat, a magnificent translation of the sacred texts with notes and commentaries by the monks. The sanctuary grounds, 725 meters above sea level, are comprised of a monastery and a basilica, as well as numerous services for visitors. The Museu de Montserrat houses an archeological and artistic collection of great value. The recent opening of a permanent exhibit about the mountains natural surroundings, the history of Montserrat and monastery life is very informative and helps visitors to learn about this sacred place. Excursions and hikes in this unique spot hold more than a few surprises along the way. The well-marked hilly path to the Holy Cave called Santa Cueva, one and a half kilometers long, is studded with fifteen sculptural groups representing the mysteries of the rosary. A cable car also transports visitors comfortably up to the sacred cave.

Two hermitage chapels perched on the highest points of the mountain range offer spectacular views: San Juan and San Jernimo. Both have their own cable cars to ascend the mountain in an almost vertical ride. Montserrat, the sacred mountain of Catalonia, is a symbol of spirituality, Catalan sentiment, as well as of religion, culture and nature. A visit to this magical place is an unforgettable experience.

Castelldefels and Sitges

If you travel to Barcelona by air and arrive at El Prat airport, you can probably catch a glimpse of the extensive beach of Castelldefels. This resort of around 50,000 inhabitants grew up around the castle of Fels, which gave its name to the town, now an important residential and tourist center. Many people live in Castelldefels and commute to work in Barcelona due to their proximity and the good public transport available. Castelldefels is only twenty minutes from the city, and trains run frequently between the two points. Lining the five kilometers of fine sandy beaches are numerous houses, apartments, hotels and restaurants, in addition to a series of wellequipped camp sites by the sea. An artificial waterway 1,200 meters long was built for the 1992 Olympics, the Canal Olmpico, where the kayak races where held in its tranquil water. Rowing can now be added to the already wide range of possibilities for recreation here.

A short distance from Castelldefels is the captivating seaside resort of Sitges. It pioneered in tourism at the end of the nineteenth century when it became a haven for creative artists and writers. The oldest part of the town and the most interesting is known as the Vila Vella, which occupies a rocky promontory between the beach of Sant Sebasti and the extensive beach of La Ribera. At one end rises the picturesque parish church, the most characteristic image of the town and the one usually portrayed on canvas or with watercolors by countless painters. In the attractive Vila Vella, the interesting museums of Maricel and Cau Ferrat can be found. In addition, the Town Hall and the Palau del Rei Moro form an attractive architectural ensemble. The Museu Maricel occupies a part of the palace of the same name, a singular structure rebuilt in 1910 on the former site of a hospital and fishermens dwellings. The museum houses collections of Romanesque and Gothic art, Catalan sculpture from the nineteenth century and a modern art gallery.

Next door to Maricel palace, we find Cau Ferrat, residence and studio of the versatile writerpainter Santiago Rusiol, a meeting place for numerous Catalonian modernist artists at the close of the nineteenth century. In his home at Cau Ferrat, now a museum, Rusiol gathered his collection of artistic iron, ceramics and paintings, and organized his famous modernist festivals, with exhibits and avant-garde theatrical and musical performances. Sitges third museum is located in the heart of the town, the Museu Romntic. Installed in an elegant nineteenth century house, the museum displays the furniture and effects of a wealthy home during the Romantic period. It also houses an enchanting collection of antique dolls. The two-kilometer La Ribera beach and palm-fringed promenade running alongside is one of the towns biggest attractions. This area concentrates numerous bars, restaurants and hotels catering to the lively social and nightlife in the town. The liberal and tolerant attitude characterizing this area has

The Peneds and the Cavas

The natural region of the Peneds is the most important wine producing area of Catalonia for the quantity and quality of its grapevines, its pioneering role in technological innovation, and the marketing capacity of its wineries that export its wines (with the Peneds D.O. seal of origin), including sparkling wine, all over the world. Lawsuits with France over the use of the term champagne, a name derived from the French region, resulted in an agreement to call the local sparkling wine made according to the champenoise method cava, a name which has easily been adopted. By extension, cavas is a name also used to mean the wineries. Vilafranca del Peneds, the regions principal town, is considered the wine capital, while the neighboring town of Sant Sadurn dAnoia is known as the cava capital. Vilafrancas center reflects a rich and dynamic urban life, where it is possible to see fine examples of modernist architecture and elegant mansions. One of them houses the Museu del Vi, where visitors to this museum are taken on a journey through

prompted the gay community to adopt it as one of its principal centers on Catalonias coast. Among the most prominent festivals and events is the popular famous carnival, where spectacular costumes are all the rage. The Rallye Internacional Barcelona-Sitges of antique cars is held annually in mid-March. The Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia takes place the first half of October. This event, devoted primarily to horror and science fiction films, has now been divided into different sections, enormously increasing the number of films shown. Famous film stars, fans and autograph-seekers have an annual date at this seaside town. Lastly, everyone coming to Sitges should purchase one of the four thousand bottles of malvas, the popular local liqueur produced here each year using age-old methods.

the history of wine and its production, with wine tasting included. Amphorae and other antique artifacts are preserved, as well as agricultural implements related to vine growing. Ninety percent of all the cava produced in Spain, some 130 million bottles per year, is produced in Sant Sadurn dAnoia. For a relatively small municipality, this means practically its entire economic activity. One of the most important sparkling wine producers is Cavas Codorniu. A visit to their facilities is a treat. Located in the outskirts of the town, it is a handsome example of modernist architecture by the architect Puig i Cadafalch, who totally remodeled the old farm of Can Codorniu. A visit includes a mini-train ride through some of the endless underground cellars where the bottles are stored. Another of the famous wineries is Caves Freixenet, founded in 1889. Its facilities are also splendid.

Vic and Ripoll

Halfway between the Pyrenees and the sea, the capital of the region of Osona is one of the most dynamic inland cities in Catalonia. Vics long history is visible in the streets and squares of its historic center and coexists in harmony with a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of profound commercial traditions. The remarkable Plaza Major is the center of the old quarter and the venue for the traditional Saturday market. The impressive Cathedral of Vic is a blend of various architectural styles, ranging from Romanesque to neoclassical. Of particular interest in the interior are the murals painted by Josep Maria Sert in the 1930s. The golden and ochre hues give the ensemble a very special monumental feeling. Close by is the Museu Episcopal, with an archeological selection and collections from different sectors of the diocese of Vic.

The nickname of "Ciutat dels Sants" (City of Saints) brings to mind the various saints who have been a part of the town, such as St. Michael of the Saints, St. Anthony Mary Claret, St. Joachina de Vedruna, to name a few. Vic is also the birthplace of the great Catalan philosopher Jaume Balmes. There is a museum devoted entirely to the author. Another interesting museum is the Museu de lArt de la Pell, which shows Vics great tradition in the working of leather. Ever since 1989, at the end of October, Vic turns into an active musical center. The renowned Mercat de Msica Viva attracts all types of musical groups performing their latest compositions. Thirty kilometers north of Vic and 110 from Barcelona, we find Ripoll, known as the Cradle of Catalonia. Its famous Benedictine monastery was one of the leading monastic centers in medieval Catalonia and the

oldest, founded in the year 879 by the first count of the Catalan dynasty. The ancient abbey was restored at the end of the nineteenth century and preserves its extraordinary carved portal, the finest example of Catalan Romanesque sculpture, as well as a beautiful two-story cloister. The pre-Pyrenees region of Ripolls has some picturesque places, including the Nria valley, accessible only by a rack-rail train.

The amazing churches are composed of three robustlyconstructed old stone buildings erected between the eighth and tenth centuries. The Masa Freixa is a modernist architectural gem with unmistakable Gaudian airs, although it is the work of local architect Llus Muncunill. This isolated house, located in Sant Jordi park, is currently the site of Terrassas Conservatory of Music. Special mention merits the Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover building, Terrasas aforementioned Museum of Science and Technology. This former large textile mill is one of the finest examples of modernist industrial architecture. One of its main features is a succession of arches through which sunlight streams, naturally illuminating the interior main floor. Other sections of the museum house temporary exhibits, as well as permanent displays about the textile industry and steam engines. Theatrical presentations are also organized, aimed at awakening the interest of visitors of all ages.

Terrassa
An industrial city thirty kilometers from Barcelona, Terrassa constantly competes with neighboring Sabadell for economic supremacy. However, Terrassa offers visitors an interesting architectonic legacy as well. There are three main places that should not be missed when visiting the city: the Masia Freixa, the Museu de la Cincia i la Tcnica de Catalunya, and the ensemble made up of the three preRomanesque churches of Sant Pere.

Cultural Activities
It is no coincidence that Barcelona has enthusiastically undertaken the organization of the first Universal Forum of Cultures. In 2004, Barcelona once again demonstrated its organizational skills and capacity for innovation in all spheres of cultural activity with this distinguished event of international scope in an appeal to all the cultures around the world to express themselves. The city became a huge open stage for creativity in the promotion of dialogue and coexistence between cultures. According to the UNESCO, the activities of the Forum focus on three main themes: cultural diversity, sustainable development and conditions for peace. The ambitious program included a long list of debates, exhibits and shows from all over the world. There is no doubt Barcelonas calling for hosting cultural events is deeply ingrained in the citys life.

A City of Festivals
Barcelonas summer festival, popularly know as Festival Grec, is the most significant cultural event held in the city on warm summer nights. From the end of June until the beginning of August, theater, dance and music flood the stages and take to the street to show off the latest trends in performing arts and contemporary music. For over twenty-five years, the Grec Festival has become a cultural landmark during Barcelonas summer. Teatre Grec, a Greek amphitheater in Montjuc park, is the stage parexcellence and lends the festival its name. Barcelona is host to many other festivals of all types, from Tradicionarius of popular and traditional music, to the Snar Festival of advanced music and multimedia art, and including the International Guitar Festival, the Jazz Festival and Festival of Ancient Music, to cite a few.

Liceu on La Rambla is the best exponent. Inaugurated in the mid-nineteenth century and recently rebuilt after a fire in 1994, it is a symbol of the city, along with universal opera stars Montserrat Caball and Josep Carreras. The Palau de la Msica Catalana, a modernist architectural treasure built by Domnech i Montaner, has a busy agenda with more than three hundred concerts annually, ranging from symphonies to pop music and flamenco. All quality musical expressions, whatever their type, have a place at the Palau. This extraordinary concert hall was created as the home of the Orfe Catal, a choral society with more than a hundred years of history and profound popular roots. A new concert hall has been recently added to the already long list of facilities throughout the city. The Auditori, by the architect Rafael Moneo, has contributed to the revitalization of the area of Glries. Built using the latest technology, the acoustics in the main hall are exceptional. It has a capacity of 2,300 spectators. The Auditori is also the permanent home of Barcelonas National Symphony Orchestra.
49

A program of outdoor concerts, in the interior of churches such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, or in any of the numerous institutional or private halls, completes the variety and wealth of the musical scene in Barcelona.

Performing Arts
Not to be outdone, activity in the domain of theater and dance also has a great tradition in Barcelona. You need only look at whats on at the theater to get an idea of the creativity and enormous variety offered in the different theaters. The presence of local theater groups has also been felt in the international arena where the imaginative spectacles of La Fura dels Baus and Els Comediants

Barcelonas passion for music is firmly bound to its opera tradition. The Gran Teatre del

during the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, respectively, were seen around the world in that magical summer of 1992. The new Ciutat del Teatre, located on Montjuc, comprised of the Teatre Lliure and Mercat de les Flors theaters, in addition to the Institut del Teatre for the training of actors, is only the tip of the iceberg in a sea of countless theaters. Alternative theaters can also be added with their unorthodox performances.

In addition to the temporary exhibits organized by the museums themselves, accompanying the display of their respective permanent collections, there are numerous exhibitions scheduled at institutions or in the art gallery circuit. The new site of the Fundaci la Caixa at Montjuc, better known as CaixaForum, and the exhibit hall of the Fundaci Caixa de Catalunya on the main floor of La Pedrera, always present first class exhibits that produce maximum interest. We must call attention to the pioneer of all art galleries, Sala Pars, located on one of the most delightful streets in the old quarter near La Rambla called Calle Petritxol. It was here in this gallery, founded in 1877, where the great modernist painters, Casas and Rusiol exhibited.

Outdoor Art
Throughout the streets and public areas of Barcelona, works of art and artistic expressions by a variety of artists are displayed. The central area of the Eixample, known popularly as the Quadrat dOr (Golden Quadrant), is a genuine outdoor museum where visitors can admire the most singular modernist buildings and the characteristic profusion in the use of applied arts which inspired this movement at the turn of the century. A plan carried out in the 1980s to beautify the city has added a modern touch to the public sculpture that forms part of Barcelonas urban landscape. Just to name a few: Roy Liechtensteins sculpture at Port Vell called Barcelonas Head; Beverly Peppers monumental Cel Caigut in the Parc de lEstaci del Nord; a work by Chillida entitled Topo in the historic Plaza del Rei; and the Basque sculptor Andrs Nagels imposing Dragn in the Parque de lEspanya Industrial next to Estacin de Sants. These are only some of the examples of contemporary sculpture visitors can admire while strolling through public places in Barcelona.

Visual Arts
If performing arts, as we have already said, play an important role in Barcelonas cultural panorama, we must not overlook the prominent place occupied by the visual arts. Barcelonas artistic heritage, housed in over forty museums in the city, includes works by such universal artists as Picasso, Mir and Tpies. The Museu dArt Contemporani (MACBA), a luminous building designed by Richard Meier in the old district of El Raval, has been a stimulus in the diffusion and discovery of avant-garde trends.

A City on the Big Screen

Lastly, a brief mention of the seventh art and the growing interest the city of Barcelona is experiencing as a film location. La Mancha native, Pedro Almodovar, captured with his keen directors eye some of the best images of the city and put them on film for the world to see on the big screen in his movie Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother). The film received various prizes, including Spains Goya award and an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1999. Gauds Sagrada Familia and the Palau de la Msica were definitely some of the films best backdrops.

Leisure and Entertainment A City for Shopping

Nobody can deny that shopping is a major attraction on any trip. A mixture of tradition and innovation characterizes the varied panorama Barcelona has to offer. From popular outdoor markets, antique and handicraft shops, to designer establishments and modern department stores, the possibilities exceed expectations. Barcelonas Shopping Line is a vast five-kilometer route running from Port Vell to the uptown part of Diagonal, along La Rambla, through the historic center and the modernist area of the Eixample. Few cities offer such a perfect symbiosis between walking and shopping.

Mediterranean Cuisine
Sampling the local gastronomy is, besides being a cultural event, a pleasure to the senses. Catalonian cuisine is emblematic of the Mediterranean diet, employing that essential staple, olive oil, in garnishing and cooking the freshest ingredients the land and sea have to offer. These are the basis of what is known as
52

cuina de mercat, an elaboration of fresh products from the marketplaces seasonal offerings. Throughout the year, the most typical dishes are calots (tender charbroiled green onions) in springtime, wild mushrooms in autumn, and escudella (a gently simmered mixture of meats and vegetables, including soup from their broth) during the winter. Mouthwatering pa amb tomquet (crunchy bread with squeezed tomato pulp), local cured meats and the inevitable paella rice dish can be found in just about any eatery. A special mention must be made about those savory tidbits, tapas, which have become fashionable for partaking in an informal and light dinner, accompanied by a glass of exquisite red or white wine. Among the most typical desserts to try are the Catalonian version of crme brule (crema catalana) or mel i mat (cottage cheese drizzled with honey). In Barcelona, foreign specialty and exotic restaurants exist together with the more classical and popular style eateries that faithfully follow traditional cuisine, often with an innovative and creative personal touch by the chef. The best conclusion to any superb repast is a toast with the renowned Catalonian champagne called cava.

Festivals and Traditions

Some dates are extra special on a citys calendar and must not be forgotten. The most important ones are described below. The evening of January fifth, the night before Epiphany, the entire city takes to the streets to watch the Procession of the Three Wise Men. Before the astonished look of the littlest ones, the Three Kings from the Orient are received with all the honors. On April 23rd, the feast of St. George known as Sant Jordi, Catalonia celebrates Book Day by exchanging millions of roses and books as a gesture of love and friendship. There can be no doubt that this festival involving community spirit and participation reveals a genuine Catalonian idiosyncrasy. The district of Grcia celebrates its particular Festa Major in mid-August. Neighborhood streets and squares are adorned as stages for dancing, concerts or outdoor fairs. All the citys energy seems to converge here during these summer days.

On September 11th, La Diada is celebrated; Catalonias national holiday commemorating the recovery of the old Catalonian institutions. La Merc is the townspeoples festival par-excellence. During the week of the 24th of September, the festivity of Our Lady of Mercy, there are countless acts held. The most traditional and popular ones are: ball de gegants (parades of giants and grotesques), the correfoc (ancestral dance in which dragons and demons spit fire as the audacious try to flee), and the castells (human towers that put the strength and balance of acrobats to the test).

Castellers

53

Spectator Sports
Barcelonas capacity for organizing important sports events was recognized worldwide with the staging of the Olympics, in which the enthusiastic participation of all its citizens was a key factor. The citys calendar is filled with major sports competitions and participation is high. A decisive role has also been played by the quality and magnitude of the infrastructure and facilities available. This is the case of the Barcelona Football Club Stadium and the modern Circuit de Catalunya which hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Spain each year. The enormous draw that the celebration of competitions or championships has in these and other sports arenas has made Barcelona a leading destination for sports enthusiasts from all over the world.

City Beaches
Few large cities are able to combine the attraction of sun and sand with a rich historic and cultural heritage. In Barcelona, the four kilometers of clean, appealing beaches extending the length of the waterfront are so easy to reach that a brief walk from the city center or a few Metro stops are all you need to get there. After the urban reform that completely transformed the area now occupied by the Villa Olmpica, an upgrading of the beaches took place, resulting in newfound pleasure in the sun and sea for the citys beachgoers. The practice of all types of water sports has increased considerably, and sailing regattas are often held off the coast. Barcelona is definitely a city with a distinct Mediterranean flavor.

Barcelona at night

Barcelona by Night
Judging by the incessant traffic and lively crowds at night and in the early morning hours in some areas of Barcelona, it might be said that the city never sleeps. Port Vell and Port Olmpic are two of the favorite spots for night-time amusement. The district of La Ribera, around Paseo del Born, boasts numerous late night haunts and nightclubs with live music. The central area of the Eixample, the district of Grcia, the uptown part of Diagonal and nearby Tibidabo are other possible alternatives. Such is the popularity of the night that some museums even schedule enticing late evening activities. Imagine a summer concert on the terrace of Gauds La Pedrera, followed by a chilled glass of cava beneath a starstudded sky.
