The Linea Light Group, in
collaboration with its Spanish
distributor Susaeta Prolighting,
planned and created the lighting
products for the Puente de La
Salve in the context of the Arcos
Rojos art project developed by the
international artist Daniel Buren.
The occasion was inspired by
the tenth anniversary of the
Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao
which is situated right by the foot
of the bridge. Buren created a huge
red sculpture formed by Formica
panels spanning the Puente de La
Salve like a great archway.
This artwork, becomes even more
stunning by night when the bridge is
lit by both static and mobile lights.
For the lighting, Buren opted for
the fexibility and dynamics of the
products in the i-LD range: 655
bars each with eleven 2W LEDs

Standing in the middle of a large

ust recently a new report commissio-
ned by Osram to Mckinsey &
Company has been made public:
Lighting the Way: Perspectives on the
Global Lighting Market. The report offers a
cross-section of the lighting industry
paying particular attention to the market
shares of today and the future for LED
SSL. Mckinseys fndings were gathered
through a survey carried out in 2011 with
consumers and sector specialists located
in the USA, Germany, Japan, China,
Russia, Brazil and India.
They gathered data from over 650 sector
design specialists and over 1,000 lighting
consumers.
The Mckinsey report shows that the
global lighting market will reach around
the level of 110 billion euro by 2020.
Increases in urbanisation, population and
government policies to stimulate energy
effciency are reported as key reasons for
this growth.
STILL Too CoSTLy
Nowadays, LED technology is too
expensive to be competitive or to gain a
wide range of usage but it is expected
that prices for LED will fall by around 20%
to 30% per year, which is likely to
accelerate the take up of this technology.
The consideration that the cost of LED will
come down was made by the Solid State
Lighting Research and Development:
Manufacturing Roadmap compiled by the
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in
July 2011.
however, Table 1 from the very same
report reveals clearer and more even
more illuminating data about the expected
costs. According to the DoE, the effcacy
the ratio between lumen generated and
the power absorbed of warm white
LED is destined to double by 2015, while
prices, expressed in dollars per thousand
lumen (klm), are destined to fall by about
9 times from $18 in 2010 to $2.2 in
2015. So, if a LED light unit cost about
$50/klm in 2010, it is expected to reduce
to a ffth of this price by 2015: $10/klm.
41% of ThE MARkET By 2016
2010 fgures show the SSL market is
valued at euro 7 billion, taking 10% of the
market. The picture is set to change
drastically in 2016 when the market is
expected to reach euro 40 billion
following an annual average growth rate
(CAGR) of 34% clearly showing the
acceleration identifed earlier. At this point,
the SSL market is likely to take 41% of
the total market. once that point is hit, the
acceleration between 2016 and 2020
should slow and the Mckinsey Report
suggests the CAGR will lower to 13%.
This all adds up to the fact that in 2020,
the SSL will be worth euro 64 billion and
represent some 59% of the total market.

SUMMARY
Attempting to snap a
picture of the Solid State
Lighting (SSL) market is not
an easy feat for two main
reasons. firstly, there are no
reliable information sources
available to capture the
global lighting market and,
secondly, there is good
number of new companies
entering the market, which
is often the case when new
industrial sectors emerge.

sectors into consideration: general,
automotive and LCD screen backlighting.
Whats evident is that general lighting,
which accounts for 75% of the total, is
the most important area of growth for the
sector and is the one that will see the
most change thanks to (or because of)
LED.
Architectural lighting is viewed as an early
adopter application because it allows
colour control and by 2020, according to
the Mckinsey Report, will reach a market
share of 85%.

Light festivals, social and cultural events to completely

SUMMARY
Lights adorning the roads

more and more visitors.
This is just what is
happening in many
European (and worldwide)
cities with the festival of
Lights in which new artistic
expressions blend with
features of regular city life
and local monuments to
bring out their uniqueness.
A
growing number of cities around
the world is choosing, annually or
sometimes more often, to organise
events where light plays the starring role.
The Light festival, or festival of Lights,
has really taken off in both capital cities
and also in lesser important towns. A city
may wish to increase its international
reputation and level, to attract more
visitors and improve its attractiveness for
tourism, facilitate evening events or
innovatively highlight a citys historical
and cultural traditions.

Light provides this and more in each of
these contexts is light by turning a city
into a real open-air museum where
works of art effortlessly blend with
objects - from everyday life, historical
monuments and local attractions
- resulting in a suggestive atmosphere
and new itineraries both for the passing
tourist and for the locals.
however, that is not all. The festival of
Lights can also become something the
locals have pride in and which helps
intensify their sense of belonging to their
community.

An all-Italian show at the Belgian Light festival

CAThEDRAL STEALS ThE ShoW
T
he key words for every
international Light festival are
innovation and entertainment.
Among all the events on the calendar,
there is a new date and location: the
small town of Ghent, one of the most
beautiful pearls in flanders, which has
made its joining the second edition
of the Light festival among European
cities offcial. So far, Ghent is the frst
town in Belgium to have a specially
completed plan of public lighting and
a festival so all that remains is for
the city to show off its knowledgeable
design which demonstrates how
fundamentally important light is.
for its frequent nearby rival, Bruges,
a wealthy citizen and designer
Roland jol from Lyon once won
the European completion with such a
spectacular illumination full of dramatic
night-time scenes while leaving the
medieval and romantic atmosphere
that characterises Ghent to one side.

SUMMARY
It took 90,000 LED lights
to build the giant coloured
LED Cathedral which
celebrated the second
Light festival in Ghent
(Belgium). The Cathedral
used only 25kw/h and
was built by the Italian
company Luminarie de
Cagna.

work which began in 1998, the year in
which this small town began its global
lighting plan as described above.
The main monuments, buildings,
gates to the city and feeder roads,
shopping streets as well as parks
and squares became the leading role
with low polluting, low consumption
night-time illumination.
The second Light festival was held
in the city centre during the end of
January. In 2011, the free event
attracted no fewer than 200,000
LEDin www.ledin.it 16
visitors from both Italy and abroad.
It was a runaway success that
exceeded any kind of expectations
the organisers could have dreamt of.
This year, the theme of the festival
was happiness - a nice coincidence
given the celebrations in memory
of Maurice Maeterlinck , an
author originally from Ghent who
won the Nobel Prize for literature in
November 1911. his magic fable,
Loiseau bleu, inspired all the
spectacular designs for scenery that
came to life during the festival. All
participating artists were enthused
by this seemingly banal theme.
A CAThEDRAL of LIGhT
Work fowed in from around Europe
created by artists of international
fame and experience. The most
remarkable one was the creation by
the Italian company, De Cagna.
Their Cathedral of LED lights
which perfectly and smoothly
blended into the urban part of town
was seamlessly in line with the spirit
of the place. Luminarie De Cagna is
an Italian family-run company which
was founded in 1930 and has only
used LED for new creations since
2006 as it recognises the unique
design qualities and complete
freedom of expression LED offers
to designers and architects with
THE dESIGN CORNER
whom they closely work alongside.
for their design presented in Ghent,
their supporting structure - the
column or tunnel - was 36 metres
long (but could be extended to
108 mt) and was made in wood.
Standing at 15 metres high at the
lowest part, it reached a massive
22 metres at its highest point.
The magic derived from the hundreds
of thousands of coloured LED lights
which went to build the details and
to decorate this imaginary cathedral.
for the whole of the festival, in via
Belfort, the 90,000 LED lights,
made by the same designing
company, bestowed a fairytale
atmosphere on the town and which
completely swept away all the other
designs around the centre of Ghent.
one most important point to highlight
is the low consumption of this huge
construction - only 25kw/h.
The latest edition of the festival
of Light in Ghent hosted around
30 designs of light, among
which were also 3D projections,
illuminated foral compositions or
aquariums inside telephone boxes,
but the one that stood out from
the crowd was the LED Cathedral
not only for its emotional impact
but also since it managed to
truly keep energy consumption
low. A perfect match between
art, perception and technique.

We used FoS100+Full Colour to light

What do you expect
nowadays from a table
lamp? first of all, it needs
to be compliant with
ones hands i.e. it needs
to move 360, just as
we wish. Then, it must
give out a cutting-edge,
ecological and eternal
source of light, like a
LED. The young German
designer Lutz Pankow
has thus created its

articulation of its joints, not at all intrusive, made up of two rods leaning one on top
of the other. Its micro-head, which can be easily handled thanks to the halo-handle,
contains 2 LEDs. The perfect balance of the entire model exalts the simplicity of its
lines and transfers its value from the world of shape to the world of function.

has often been reduced to a mere
equation more light=more safety,
concentrating attention on the
functionality and safety and mitigating
circumstances to crime. This has kept
public offces and planners away from a
multidisciplinary approach and from
developing a culture of light.
WhAT DoES ThIS MEAN foR A CITy

The high rate of urbanisation together
with the birth of huge new city areas have
forced local cities into developing a
corresponding system of public lighting
networks to guarantee basic safety and
infrastructure.
Recent studies by the institute of
Criminology at the University of
Cambridge have found highly interesting
statistics of the effects of better street
lighting on the crime rate.
The towns involved in the study were
SIZING UP URBAn LiGhT
Dudley and Stoke. In a sample area of
Dudley, which was appropriately lit, the
crime rate fell by 41% compared to only
15% in an area with unchanged lighting
(control area). In Stoke, the crime rate fell
by 43% in the sample area and 45% in
the two nearby areas, compared to only
2% in the two control areas. This
research demonstrates that savings
resulting from a lower crime rate are
greater than the costs of installing better
lighting.
PLANNING PUBLIC LIGhTING
That said, however, it is not enough.
Nowadays, planning public lighting must
be done using an integrated and
multidisciplinary approach based on a
precise methodological procedure which
takes roads into consideration just like a
building or technical illumination.
The planning stages are as follows:
1. Purchase and analyse research
The frst approach to designing public
lighting is to purchase all the information
and data connected with the specifc
needs, with the time planning required to
complete the work and also the
classifcation of the road (according to the
new Highway Code D.lgs n285/92).
following this, it is important to study the
area where the installation is to be made
in terms of its historical-urban context and
also the particular characteristics of the
road (width, pavements, type of covering,
any obstacles or trees, etc).
Check for existing public lighting plants
(IP), the height distance regulations for
aeroplane fight paths (AT and MT) as well
as any other underground services. This
last point can be carried out using
geo-radar along the planned area of work.
2. identifcation of the technical
illumination
once all the input is acquired, the
designer can continue to size up the plant
by identifying the light source and the best
lighting base to cater for all the technical
lighting characteristics under the
Directives uni en 13201:2004 and uni
11248:2007. This procedure will enable
the identifcation of the appropriate
technical lighting category.
The Directive also associates a determined
category for the referenced technical
lighting according to Laws in force (D.lgs
n285/92) based on the type and location
of the roads.
Any evaluation of critical points by using
risk analysis, carried out by identifying the
different categories connected with the
technical illumination of the project,
guarantees the best possible safety for
drivers and/or pedestrians under night-time
conditions as well as keeping energy
consumption low, costs of installation and
Technical Level:

SUMMARY
Lighting a city these
days is a challenge of
prime importance for
planning, architecture and
engineering, not least a
fundamental instrument
of safety.
Planning public lighting
plants needs to follow a
whole and multidisciplinary
approach based on a
precise methodological
process. This article
analyses the stages of this
process.

The use of low chromatic yield sodium
steam lamps means giving a virtually
monochromatic visual effect in the zone
illuminated. on one hand, that enables
obstacles to be easily identifed, while on
the other, it is impossible to distinguish
detail. for roads in residential areas, this
characteristic may not provide the best
solution.
Light sources of a wavelength nearer
500nm not only guarantee a visibility factor
close to the unit used during night-time
(Scotopic curve) but also, according to
recent research, better safety for drivers
and pedestrians. This research has shown
that white light helps reveal movement at
the sides of the road from a farther
distance, reducing the reaction times when
braking and also means faces and details
can be more easily identifed.
LED Technology characterised by coloured
temperatures which provide the
aforementioned benefts, mean generous
margins for energy saving up to 50%
compared to traditional systems. Using
high yield chromatic sources (RA>60)
allows, according to UNI 11248, the
technical illumination of the road to be
downgraded which in turn leads to further
energy saving margins from the choice of
power to use.
LED installations mean the reactive
component can be completely eliminated,
cos1, and benefts can be gained from
stabilising the line tension.
further strengths from LED technology are
of an environmental nature.
Globally: a reduction in co2 emissions
and the absence of mercury; locally:
one-way direction of the light fow, which
limits direct light pollution and an absence
of Uv rays.
As far as road safety is concerned, LED are
particular as they do not have transient
power. A characteristic which enables,
when allowed, to develop adapted plants.

huge number of historical-cultural
realities which mean ACEA has to work
closely with the Superintendence for
Cultural heritage as well as the local
councils concerned. ACEA tries to
minimise disruption to locals and to
stick to the working schedules forecast
by identifying the best areas for
work and allowing, where possible,
the use of micro-invasive technology
such as micro-tunnelling. A test certifes
the suitability of the completed work
and is key to the transfer of the plant
over to the management unit.
7. Maintenance and Emergency
Management
As Acea holds the licence to service
public lighting in Central Rome, it deals
with not only planning and developing
of plants but also maintenance and a
24-hour emergency service across the
whole city area (around 1,300 km
2
).
By adopting cutting edge technology
such as remote controls and the
installation of LED solutions, this leads
to certain benefts in the management
of maintenance plus clear reductions in
maintenance costs.
In the feld of maintenance engineering,
ACEA carries out continual research to
fnd ways of simplifying process, such
as the plug&play system which helps
cut connection times, dismantling and
substitution of the lighting base,
making it much safer for workers.
finally, through the inclusion of
appropriate contractual clauses to
guarantee the avant-garde equipment,
the whole equipment can be
substituted if it fails to work which, as
well as reducing the time the lighting is
not working, it also means the lighting
base can be repaired in a specialised
laboratory.
management low, and also reducing the
environmental impact.
Risk analysis is described in paragraph
7.4 of UNI 11248/07 instructions for
changes to the Technical lighting
Category according to Flow
Parameters, where, following an
analysis of the area, the most important
parameters that can condition the
technical illumination project, known as
flow Parameters, are given. for
example, if there are no conficting ares

roundabouts, etc), the vehicle fow

highly illuminated adjacent areas,
whether they pedestrian crossings or
systems to slow traffc are nearby. The
flow parameters category can be
modifed according to the effectiveness
of the colour from light source.
3. Choice of Light Source
(see description box)
4. Layout tracing and check
During the inspection the designer
checks the layout of the plant deriving
from preliminary analyses and
calculations. Using special measuring
instruments (pedometer, laser measurer
and GPS geo-referencing system), each
light and other parts of the plant are
traced and checked to see if they are
compatible with the original designs.
5. Reworking of data and drafting
the design
The data acquired during analyses plus
those gathered in the feld are fnally
reworked to provide a draft of the fnal
design. The work to produce (drawings,
estimate, technical data sheets, design
report, geological research, etc) are
what determine, in detail, the work to
carry out and its cost.
6. Transmission of work, plant
installation and check
Implementing a public lighting plant is
carried out by ACEA using strict safety
procedures. ACEA works in the most
unique context in the world: Rome.

he rising of LED technology has brought innovative products into the
market, which have been able to bring important results of energy
efficiency.
Street and urban lighting, in particular, are very sensitive to energy saving
problem. In this area there is high attention to low power consumption and
light quality that also means safety and comfort for citizens.
Because of a lack of precise regulations and of an increasing number of
manufacturers/players, the situation for costumers is confused. Its
difficult indeed to compare traditional equipment s with LED street lamps,
in terms of energy and photometric performances.
The datasheets of this section of the magazine contain the most important
parameters to choose and compare the urban/street lighting products
existing on the Italian market (electrical power, colour temperature, CRI,
etc.).
however, the most significant value is probably the luminous flux,
generated by the entire luminaire (and not by every single LED). According
to this parameter, it is possible to value the equipment efficiency and the
hypothetic percentage of energy consumption.
The aim of these datasheets is to give to end costumers a helpful tool in
order to promote the growth of LED solutions in street lighting.

TECHNOLOGIES
L
ED lights have already reached the
point of replacing traditional
sources in the lighting world.
This hand over towards solid state
lighting began some time ago and is
reaching its most important stage - that
of being used effectively in most
environments.
As far as technological development
goes, LED is shifting a variety of fronts.
The newer and a wider range of sources
available is largely down to more
effcient research, more care taken over
the type of light emitted with more
emphasis placed on reducing prices.
Its not only technological research into
semiconductors that accounts for all the
development and the evolution of LED
lighting, its also the planning of light
units which considers primarily the
defnition of optic and photometrical
features of each product.
While this is also a principle used for
traditional light sources, for LED its the
defnition and the choice of the best
optic that needs special attention.
Lighting is solid state just like all
emergent technologies and has yet to
develop defned standards. Its this lack
of standards that can easily lead to
different interpretations of the reference
parameters and, as a result, lead to an
inappropriate or the least optimal choice.
ThE RoLE of oPTICS
IN ThE LED REvOLUTiOn
ThE ChoICE of SECoNDARy oPTICS
The evolution in packaging LED products
came following a development largely
characterised by two main principles: an
increase in lighting effciency and the
light fow given out by each source.
over the last few years, different types
of LED have been created: single die
power LED, power multichips, LED array.
The shape of packaging, the die layout
and the shape of the main lens have all
been designed to maximise the
performance in terms of lumen or
lumen/Watt which has meant producers
of secondary optics have had to design
suitable lens and refectors. Problems
connected with projecting the shape of
the source, with mixing colours and with
generating regular light are of prime
importance when designing a lighting
unit, and in some environments, these
optical parameters are actually more
relevant compared to simple light
effciency. The right choice for the use of
LED optics will therefore be a critical and
strategic factor for solid state lighting.
SECoNDARy oPTIC TyPES foR LED
Secondary optic types for LED may be
categorised into lenses, refectors,
multiple lenses and hybrid systems.
Saying a priori which type will be the
best of them is impossible since each
must be evaluated according to its
application and the source used.

SUMMARY
Secondary optics for LED
are playing a key role
during these early days
of solid state lighting.
Effciency of a LED source
is just the right factor for
its success, but it alone is
not enough.
The choice of a lens or a
refector is another incre-
asingly critical factor for
success in LED lighting.

amount emitting rom the light unit
itself). The high usage is defnitely
one of the main advantages for LED
street lighting against traditional
types.
This approach, initially only
developed for street lighting, has
begun to catch on in other sectors in
which it increasing the fow of light is
important. Nowadays, we can fnd
lenses on the market with a different
photometric distribution helping to
resolve a good deal of technical
problems connected with lighting.
To simplify and rationalise the design
of the light units, modular systems
and multiple lens systems have
come into their own. In a single
component, there may be a variety of
optics, which may even be different
photometrically, to help with ftting
the units more easily and a
subsequent price advantage in terms
of total cost of the product.
ThE SySTEM PRoJECT
one important aspect to consider
when designing a new light unit is
that of developing a modular system
that can be easily adapted.
This is a principle which, in general,
takes on more importance with solid
state lighting which is characterised
by rapid innovation. It is often the
case that a chosen LED needs to be
switched in favour of a new type
available, or perhaps because it has
become obsolete or perhaps just to
change the layout.
from this standpoint, it is important to
place optic systems that present a
certain level of standardisation,
mainly for base and the size of the
units to be applied. Secondary optics
must be designed, therefore, not only
around the shape of light emitted but
also according to its shape. More and
more producers are creating standard
holders to make connecting
secondary lighting to the base easier,
and in many cases, the holder also
houses the LED which ends up
turning it into a modular system.
CoNCLUSIoNS
Secondary optics for LED are playing
a key role during these early days of
solid state lighting. Effciency of a LED
source is just the right factor for its
success, but it alone is not enough.
What is required is consideration of
the shape of light, how it is to be
emitted and the distribution of
light intensity around a space to
ensure the creation of products will
cater for all the needs technical
illumination throws up.
The choice of a lens or a refector is
an increasingly critical factor for
success in LED lighting.
(polycarbonate), use the principle of
total refection to extremely precisely
modify light emissions from the
source (generally Lambertian).
on passing through several surfaces,
the light loses a certain amount of
effciency, therefore creating the
correct optic system needs careful
planning.
Refectors account for the other key
group of secondary optics, with the
common denominator of all refectors
being the wide angle.
This implies that a considerable part
of the LED light fows from the optic
system without hitting any other
refecting surface and this, in turn,
reduces the ability to control the rays
of light. Refectors are necessary
when LED sources are used for large
areas (such as in LED Array cases).
for some applications such as street
lighting, it is extremely important to
accurately plan the distribution of
light intensity in the required space. In
this case, the common approach is to
carefully change all secondary optic
surfaces. By being aware of the LED
light ray model and defning the
shape of the photometrics needed
means that the so-called free-form
optics can be designed.
These optics infuence the use of the
lighting unit positively (the percentage
of light fow that reaches the road

Performance tests carried out at 25C.
Processing the collected data for a minimum of
6000 hours you can estimate the degradation
of the luminous fux of LED over time.
TM-21
The methodology for carrying out this
estimation has been released IESNA in 2011
as Technical Memorandum: TM21-11-iES
Projecting Long Term Lumen Maintenance
of LeD Light Sources. The model that has
been chosen as representative of the
degradation of the normalized luminous fux
f (t) at time t (hours) is the exponential model
with the formula:

Equazione 1
Equazione 2
Equazioni 3,4,5
The values of parameters B and shall be
derived by an algorithm applied to fux
values collected according to LM-80-08.
The main points of algorithm are:
Normalize the data of luminous fux to a
value of 1 at 0h time.
Average of all the experimental samples
at time t obtaining values of the mean
fow.
only the data from of the last 5,000
hours shall be used (for example, from
1,000 to 6,000)
Use these points to perform an
exponential least squares curve ft
Consider the value of the estimate only
for a maximum 6X of the test time.
Luckily, the results of these steps are often
published by the LED manufacturer. We can
directly apply the formula to get the time at
which the LED will decay to the fux

EDs for general lighting grant an
effective luminous fux for a long time
thus reducing maintenance interven-
tions. This is a feature that often motivates
the choice of LED based devices in a project.
LEDs which are used with working
parameters recommended by the
manufacturer promise life expectancy that in
most cases exceeds 50,000 hours:
approximately 6 years of continuous use.
The useful life expectancy is considered the
time for which the LED is able to provide a
signifcant percentage of the initial luminous
fux, usually 70% (L
70
). LEDs in fact, only in
rare cases, cut sharply their operation,
usually they gradually decrease the emitted
fux during operation time.
Given the recent introduction of these
sources and the continuous update of
products, the fgures on life expectancy of
the LEDs are not the result of fnal historical
measurements, but are estimates based on
fux measurements of LEDs that have
worked for a limited amount of time.

The reference methodology for measuring
lumen maintenance is iES-LM-80-08

the life of LEDs is reduced by the high

furthermore, the luminous fux increases in
the frst thousands of hours of operation and
then begins to decay. for LEDs tested at low
temperature (55C), it may happen that a
negative parameter is obtained, which
would indicate an exponential increase of the
fux over time. Actually what it means is that
the collected data is not suffcient to
implement the model.

REfERENCE-CLASS
MEASUREMENT DEvICES
When selecting the equipment for
the EBvLightLab, EBv made
investments in the six-fgure euro
region and quite deliberately opted
for an entire range of highly
professional devices, most of which
are manufactured in Germany.
The list of the measuring devices
includes two integrating spheres for
2 and 4 measurements, a
spectroradiometer for reference
measurements, a goniophotometer,
a light density measuring device and
a luxmeter. This product range is
complemented by special
measurement/evaluation and control
software, source meters and
multimeters, a thermal camera and
supplementary tools.
INTEGRATING SPhERES WITh
A DIAMETER of 250 MM
AND 1,000 MM
At frst glance, the most noticeable
element in the EBvLightLab is the
two integrating spheres, where the
lighting current and the radiant
power are measured. These
measurements are necessary for
determining the luminous effciency
(measured in lumens per watt).
In addition, it is in these spheres that
colorimetric measurements of the
quantitative spectral distribution are
performed and the colour
temperature and colour rendering
index are determined.
The EBvLightLab contains two
integrating spheres: a 2 sphere with
a diameter of 250 mm and a 4
sphere with an internal diameter of
1,000 mm. The interior of the
integrating spheres is lined with
barium sulphate (BaSo
4
), which
diffusely refects around 98% of the
light. The light is therefore optically
integrated in the sphere via the
refective surfaces on the inside of the
sphere, which allows the luminous
fux to be measured in accordance
with the requirements of CIE 127.
for example, the small integrating
sphere is where individual LEDs are
measured or selected. The 250 mm
integrating sphere allows the
engineers to measure the semi-
spherical space (steradian: 2) above
a small circuit board, and hence an
LED.
This means that personnel can for
example select, in a 250 mm
integrating sphere, LEDs with a
precisely defned wavelength if fve
identical LEDs are needed.
however, an appropriately sized 4
sphere is required for measuring an
entire light. for this reason, EBv has
also acquired an integrating sphere
with an internal diameter of 1,000
mm (steradian: 4) for all-around
measurements, in addition to the
250 mm sphere. This large 4
integrating sphere is also ideal for
comparative measurements - for
example between flament or halogen
bulbs and LED lamps - or for the
CIE-compliant measurement of
high-power LEDs and entire lights
with an edge length of up to 90 cm.

A special holder inside the spheres
allows an E27 fxture or light to be
attached for this purpose. EBv also
provides the right mechanical adapters
for measurements in the sphere.

SPECTRoRADIoMETER
A core element of all the measuring
technology in the EBvLightLab is the
CAS 140CT spectroradiometer from
Instrument Systems, which is
designed to perform industry
reference measurements under
continuous 24-hour operation.
This high-precision device measures
the spectral power distribution of a
1,100 nm light source (infrared)
within milliseconds through the
visible light spectrum into the Uv
range at 380 nm with a data point
interval of 0.8 nm over a very high
intensity measuring range of nine
decades, which corresponds to a
dynamic range of 1:1,000,000,000.
All of the measured values are output
via the USB bus to a PC/laptop/
notebook, where the SpecWinPRO
software then handles further
processing of the data in Windows
(XP and higher). Not only does this
software deliver the measurement
data in the form of individual items of
data in a table, it also displays the
spectral distribution and position in
the colour diagram in graphic form.
In this way, the software also
calculates the colour temperature
and colour rendering index (CRI) on
the basis of the measured values.
here, the device measures only the
radiometric output; to determine the
photometric output, the software
evaluates the radiometric spectral
measurement data on the basis of
the sensitivity curve of the human
eye and outputs the luminous fux in
lumens.
Using a plug-in, the SpecWinPRo
software controls a keithley source
meter. This means that the entire
measurement process can be
controlled via software from the
electrical activation of the LED to the
details of the data output and data
processing. The light to be measured
reaches the analysis device via
CIE-compliant optical probes and a
fbre-optic cable.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
The following example, which
describes the development of a light
with a total light fux of 500 lm,
demonstrates how a high-precision
spectroradiometer in a 4 sphere
with a diameter of 1,000 mm can
help engineers in their work.
Theoretically, fve single 100-lumen
LEDs are suffcient for this design,
but the use of diffusers and lenses
leads to a certain amount of loss.
In the 1000-mm integrating sphere
in the EBvLightLab, manufacturers
can measure fnished systems and
identify whether fve LEDs are
suffcient for ensuring compliance
with the specifcations or whether a
sixth one is needed.
Alternatively, the light can be
measured with a modifed diffuser-
lens system to see whether the
specifcations can potentially be met
with just fve LEDs.
Differential measurements with the
aid of auxiliary lights in the 4
sphere enable the SpecWin PRo
software to partial out any measured
value distortions caused by unwanted
absorption by the light housing.
In practice, however, this absorption
is completely irrelevant because it
only affects the semi-spherical space
that does not receive any light
anyway - in other words, the area
behind the lamp.
CoLoUR SPECTRUM
AND CoLoUR REPRoDUCTIoN
IN PRACTICE
Light and lamp designers are very
interested in the spectral distribution
of light. In this context, investigations
focus not only on the location of
intensity peaks and spectral
distribution, but also on the colour
reproduction index and colour
temperature.
for example, the CRI value describes
how an object appears when
irradiated with a certain light. A good
example of this is the bright street
lamps which emit a yellowish light
from their sodium vapour lamps.
Sodium vapour lamps are very
effcient and deliver a high luminous
fux (measured in lumen) for the
amount of electric power they use,
which means that they offer a high
luminous effciency (lm/W).
however, the yellowish light emitted
by sodium vapour lamps is relatively
mono-spectral. Although under this
light you can clearly see whether or
not there are any people, animals or
vehicles on the road, it is not
possible to distinguish green lines
from red ones on a map under this
type of street lighting. Also, trees
appear black.
Similarly, a number of different
light-emitting diodes are limited by
certain compromises in terms of
colour.
however, it is now possible to
compensate quite effectively for
these limitations, and with suitably
clever designs it is currently quite
possible to generate light with an
excellent colour reproduction index
well above 90. however, a 4
integrating sphere and a
spectroradiometer are required in
order to co-ordinate this type of light
source.

individual LEDs and smaller LED
modules and this with an angular
resolution of 0.1 throughout the
entire half-space in the beam
direction of the LED. In combination
with the spectroradiometer CAS
140CT already mentioned above,
this will also enable EBv Elektronik
to measure various spectral
parameters such as colour
co-ordinates or colour temperature
as a function of angle.
Since a number of different
parameters of white LEDs - such as
the colour temperature - vary
signifcantly with the beam angle,
these measurements play a very
important role.
While geometry-related
measurement errors can occur in
measurements performed in an
integrating sphere, the
goniophotometer - which is equipped
with servo motors and controlled fully
automatically by the SpecWinPRo
software - is also ideal for precisely
determining the radiant power and
luminous fux and, in turn, the
all-important luminous effciency
quotient, which is specifed in lm/W.
The SpecWinPRo software is again
used for the goniophotometer for
processing and presenting the
measurements, which are then
available in the IES and EULUMDAT
export formats for further processing.
These data formats represent the
characteristic beam data for an LED,
and they can then be used as the
starting data for the simulation of a
complete lamp.
SoURCE METER
The 2440 source meter from
keithley is essentially a high-
precision, programmable constant
current and constant voltage source
for actuating LEDs and LED modules
under test conditions in the
EBvLightLab. The current and voltage
can be precisely set via the serial
interface.
To minimise the load on the light
sources during the measurements,
the source meter can be software-
controlled so that the LEDs are
switched on only during the actual
measurement but remain switched
off during gaps between
measurements. The 2440 source
meter is also an ultra-high-precision
volt and ampere meter that transfers
the current, voltage and power data
to the measurement software via an
interface.
ADDITIoNAL MEASURING
INSTRUMENTS
The range of measuring equipment in
the EBv Elektronik LightLab also
includes an infrared camera. This
camera allows hot spots on circuit
boards to be identifed in good time
so that thermal management (i.e. the
proper dissipation of thermal losses)
can be optimised on the basis of this
data. In addition to these measuring
instruments, EBvs new LightLab also
features two lighting measurement
devices, the Mavo-Spot 2 light density
measuring device and the Mavolux
5032B luxmeter. By focusing on
objects such as roads, tunnels, sports
grounds or airfelds from a distance,
the Mavo-Spot 2 light density
camera enables corresponding light
density measurements (unit: cd/m
2
) to
be performed. It can also be used for
determining the light density of
displays, monitors or projection
screens.
The angle of detection of the
Mavo-Spot 2 is just 1, which allows
for a highly precise selection of the
measurement points or pixels on
which the device focuses. The
measurement object can be located
anywhere from 34 cm to an infnite
distance away from the device. The
Mavolux light meter allows users to
calculate the illumination levels
(measured in lux) at the workplace
and on other surfaces.
The EBvLightLab also features a
range of universal multimeters that
measure not only the actual effective
values of voltages and currents, but
also the effective power values.
These devices also enable the
measurement of resistances,
frequencies and capacitances.
Also featured by the EBvLightLab is
equipment for measuring and
monitoring temperature.
various pieces of equipment ranging

n 2012 we have reached a point in the

can be used for general lighting in almost
all professional applications.
Today LED light engines can deliver very

essential to creating high quality lighting

The lighting market is increasingly
becoming aware of the fact that there is no
way back to conventional lighting and is
moving quickly to embrace the new
technology. yet this transformation requires
a different approach from all involved and
the path is not without stumbling blocks
along the way.
STABLE LED LIGhT SoURCES
An oEM needs stability of light sources
when operating a mass volume business,
often reliant on automated production
processes. for decades this was the case
with conventional light sources, whereby
the specifcations and dimensions rarely
changed, but with LEDs this is not the
case. Increases in LED energy effciency
often mean lumen packages are increased,
that LED drivers are no longer compatible
and the thermal behaviour has therefore
also changed. All this necessitates a
redesign and the sourcing of new
components for a luminaire manufacturer.
These are factors that are not very
conducive for a fast adoption of LEDs.
Philips saw the need to bring stability of
LED light engines to this highly dynamic
market and to create a new proposition
that would allow oEMs to take advantage
of having the latest, best, most effcient
LEDs inside their luminaire, as well as to be
able to continue LED luminaire production
in large quantities. Therefore in 2008,
Philips introduced fortimo as the worlds
frst Future-Proof LED light engine.
The fortimo LED modules undergo
regular upgrades in LEDs inside and are at
the forefront of energy effciency, without
changing lumen package, dimensions,
thermal behaviour or compatibility with
existing Xitanium drivers.

The LED module is however only part of
the LED light engine needed for the
luminaire. The LED driver is often
treated as an afterthought, but is really
at the heart of the whole LED
proposition. When a LED module is
upgraded with the latest, improved
generation of LEDs inside, it is very
much the question whether the current
driver the oEM is using will still be able
to ft with the new electrical
specifcations of the LED module. often
a newly upgraded LED module means
that a new driver has to be sourced.
Xitanium drivers and fortimo LED
Modules have been developed together,
in a smart system approach to support
the needs of luminaire manufacturers.
Xitanium drivers offer fexibility, high
quality and reliability and support the
fortimo future proof concept. The key
feature of Xitanium drivers is that they
work with operating windows and
adjustable output current. operating
windows offer the fexibility that is
necessary to manage new fortimo LED
module generations, as the driver will
operate any module with a current and
voltage setting that falls within the
window.
This enables future proof solutions and
continuation of production lines.
Xitanium drivers also have an adjustable
output current feature, which allows a
luminaire manufacturer to differentiate
himself with a unique LED Light engine
specifcation, by choosing for a lower or
higher lumen package and thereby also
an associated higher or lower effciency.
Adjusting the current is a smart feature
of the Xitanium drivers, which can be
done by means of a Programmable
driver and software tool, or by the use of
a resistor whose settings can be
changed and which is integrated in
either the LED module, cable or
connector.
further LED driver features that should
be considered, as they will enhance the
reliability and quality and are designed
to protect the life time of the LED Light
engine, include thermal derating, hot
rewiring and central DC operation.
A CoMPLICATED WoRLD
In the new LED world, oEMs and lighting
specifers have had to get used to
different terminology when referring to
LED solutions. No longer is the light
source denoted by its wattage (a 36W
fuorescent tube), but by its lumen
package (2000Lm downlight module).
With conventional lamps, colour shift and
colour consistency was rarely discussed
and no one ever talked about MacAdam
elipses. Thermal heat management and
passive or active cooling devices were
never on the agenda. Just keeping up to
date with the latest technological
developments, or application learnings
nowadays takes up a lot of time.
There has also been an explosion of
different types of LED modules on the
market; spot light versions, downlights,
linear strips, with all kinds of different
specifcations and promises. There are,
for instance, several different ways of
producing white light, ranging from the
blue LED and remote phosphor
combination favoured by the fortimo LED
DLM, the R/G/B approach, to the red and
white LED combinations used in LED
spot lighting. The challenge for LED
module manufacturers is to recognize
and choose the right technology for the
right application and to be constantly
researching and looking out for
improved, cheaper ways of producing
high quality white light. There are new
kids on the block, some of them with
good quality and some of them with
rather more dubious credentials.
When choosing the LED light engine for
a typical LED spotlight luminaire there
can often be 10 (slightly) different form
factors to choose from, with different
screw holes, electrical connections and
different lumen packages. It is a

It was becoming increasingly clear that
some form of stability was needed.
That is why, in february 2010, 9 leading
lighting companies, amongst which
Philips, set up the Zhaga consortium.
That number has since risen to more than
180 companies from Asia, Europe and the
USA. Zhaga aims to make the LeD light

The Zhaga specifcations are aimed at

sacrifcing creativity and design freedom.

high Quality LED solutions have now clearly
reached the stage where they have already
become a viable, if not obvious, option for
general lighting solutions in all market
segments.
Their usage is sustainable and represents
