Born in New York, artist Laurie Lipton spent time in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France before making London the home of her creative operations. Inspired by the work of the troubled photographer Diane Arbus, Liptons work is utterly uncensored surrealism. Through her work aiming to create something no one had ever seen before, something that was brewing in the back of my brain. Having been told that the style of her work was dated and the domain of the Middle Ages, Lipton persevered with her stunningly macabre images.

Recently her intricately detailed charcoal illustrations have moved into mainstream consumption. Collaborating with edgy, high-street inhabitants All Saints seemed a natural platform for Liptons dark work. The Laurie Lipton for All Saints collection saw gothic skeleton sketches inhabiting the front of monochrome t-shirts. The skeletons feature heavily in Liptons Day of the Dead collection (which can be seen on her Facebook page) and are set in awkward juxtaposition, which is almost comical. Family portraits inhabited by opulently attired skeletons are an example of this.

Not concerned with creating Disney-esque portrayals of the world, Liptons work is available to buy in the book The Extraordinary Drawings of Laurie Lipton, which the artist herself suggests is a great book with which to disturb and upset.
