Movie stars, heads of state, millionaires and royalty alike sailed the oceans while enjoying world-class amenities and service. At the helm of the ocean travel industry, Cunard found its fleet depleted by World War I commissions. Plans began for THE QUEEN MARYSM and her sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth, in 1930. The Queen Mary Today

Company, LTD., in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was appointed with every measure of elegance. From the time of her maiden voyage in 1936, the Queen Mary was regarded as the only way to travel by the elite of high society. At a massive 81,237 tons and 1,019.5 feet in length, she accommodated up to 2,000 passengers in pampered luxury. With the outbreak of World War II, she was commissioned into service to carry more than 765,000 troops and travel more than 560,000 miles, playing a substantial role in every major Allied campaign. Following the war, she resumed her place as the monarch of the waterways. Retired in 1967, she was purchased by the City of Long Beach, California, where she is permanently berthed today as a unique leisure and meeting hotel.
