(Tommy Lee James, Claude Kelly, Martina McBride) I wanted to write a song to open my show, so Tommy Lee James and Claude Kelly and I got together and wrote this song. It has tons of energy and really describes how I feel when I walk out onstage. Its like I waited my whole life, for us to be together this one night. I believe a concert is an experience we all share together and a memory we make together, so this is really a song I wrote for my fans.

ALWAYS BE THIS WAY

(Brett James, Hillary Lindsey, Martina McBride) I wrote this with Hillary Lindsey and Brett James over some great Mexican food. We wanted to write something breezy, playful and fun, that you could play ukulele on. It was loosely inspired by Im Yours, by Jason Mraz and Hey Soul Sister, by Train. We had a lot of fun writing it throwing out lines like boom, boom, boom and theyre so stupid, just for fun and then saying, I like it! Lets just say that. I have lots of fun singing this one. Jimi Westbrook came in and sang harmonies with me.

I m Gonna L ove You Through It

(Ben Hayslip, Sonya Isaacs, Jimmy Yeary)

When you feel lost and scared to death. Like you cant take one more step. Just take my hand together we can do it. I m gonna love you through it.
This song really moves me. I remember the first time I heard it. It was at a meeting where people from publishing companies play you songs they hope you record and it just stopped everyone in their tracks. It is so honest and has words that you dont normally hear in a song. I know its heavy, but I also think its so hopeful. I love that it also tells the story of the support person, in this case a husband. When I played the demo for John he said, Thats what I would say to you. I think its what everyone would want to say or hear if they were in this situation. Ive heard from so many people that this song has touched their lives. When I sang it I got chills from head to toe for the entire song. I still do when I sing it live. That has never happened to me before....

MARRY ME

featuring Pat Monahan of Train (Pat Monahan)

When we did Crossroads for CMT with Train, we performed this song. It was their single at the time. Its not done as a duet on their record, but I love it as a duet. I think its interesting too because you dont hear us sing together until the last chorus...and these two people are wanting to get up the nerve to speak to each other, each thinking the other is The one. So, I love that they tell their stories separately and then come together at the end. Pats voice kills me... he is just such a great and emotional singer. He came to the studio and we recorded it together. It was a magical day and I think its a magical song.

Broken Umbrella

(Mark Irwin, Josh Kear, Chris Tompkins)

If were walking around with a broken umbrella Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain

Cause when Im with you It really dont matter

It was really difficult to get this song recorded and it went through many changes. We actually cut it twice! I love what we ended up with. I always knew I wanted to put horns on it. I have never used horns on an album. They sound so fun and cool! When I hear this song I just hear fun, and its so visualI see a whole video in my head. This is one to drive around with the top down and it cranked up loud! Thats Carolyn Dawn Johnson singing those cool background vocals.

I love this! Leslie Satcher and Rachel Thibodeau

(Martina McBride, Leslie Satcher, Rachel Thibodeau)

were writing and I stopped by and next thing I know Leslie is playing a bit of this for me and saying, This would be so different for you and so SEXY! in her Texas drawl. She was so excited about the idea I jumped right in. I love this record we made on it too. Once again, using horns. And that funky guitar tone is perfect. I told John to go for a real retro kind of drum sound. I put real finger-snaps on it too! First time Ive ever snapped on a record. Oh snap! Im going to have so much fun singing this live.

WHATCHA GONNA DO
(Rebecca Lynn Howard, Jason Sever, Rachel Thibodeau) Talk about fun to sing! This one made it on at the last minute. I had the album recorded and needed to finish it to turn it in. This song came in and I said I wish I had more time! I would record this in a heartbeat. Then I got a call from the record company saying they wanted to move the release date to later. So, my first thought was I DO have time to record this song! I love the feel of it and the words and the melodyjust everything about it! Its a really simple, rootsy sound, which is what I set out to do with this album initially. Just simple tracks and production that really let the songs shine through. I feel like the person in this song is torn...I think its sassy and strong, but vulnerable at the same time. She wants him to change. But shes ready to move on if he doesnt. I havent really sung a song with that attitude in a while. It reminds me, sentimentwise, of something like Whatever You Say. My other LBT buddy, Phillip Sweet, came in and sang on this song. Perfect.

You could walk away or decide to stay Either way my skys still blue So baby whatcha gonna do

This is a song inspired by my real life! I was writing with the Warren Brothers and Brett had the idea to write a song with this feel. We wanted it to feel kinda like Me And Bobby McGee. He started singing the words in the first verse and it was going to be about stuff that was going on in the world and how its all about the perspective you have on things. Well, Delaney and I were going through what she refers to as a bit of a rough patch, meaning I probably didnt hear her and she thought I was ignoring her, or maybe I didnt agree with her plans for the evening or something. You know, typical stuff. John took her to school that day and when he got home he asked what was going on and I said, What do you mean? He said, In the car, Delaney said, Mom hates me. I actually laughed and told him that was obviously ridiculous and I had no idea what she was talking about. I told the Warrens this and I was just explaining what a trip it is to have a teenager. You go from being the center of their universethey think you are cool and hilarious and they will do silly things with youto feeling SO not-cool! Its not for the faint-of-heart! And not only are you now just the parent, you really DID used to be cool. A little rebellious. Daring. YOUNG! Well, they definitely dont see you that way. You are just mothers and fathersof teenage daughters. So I said, Thats what we should write about! And about 45 minutes later we had a song. It came so easy and it was so much fun to write. We had a lot of laughs that day. When we finished, Delaney walked in and we played it for her she loved it. I wanted to make this record kinda reckless and not too polished. That felt like the right way to sing it too. This song is fun to do liveI see so many people nodding their heads and smiling in agreement! The cool thing is, teenage daughters like it too!

TeenageDaughters

(Martina McBride, Brad Warren, Brett Warren)

ummer o ov
(Tommy Lee James, Hillary Lindsey, Martina McBride)

The day we wrote this I came in with this title. I dont really know where it came from, but I knew I wanted to write a song called Summer of Love.
I wanted it to be a story song about having and losing lovekind of a Strawberry Wine sentiment. One thing I love about it is that its open for interpretation and creating your own story. We deliberately didnt say what year it was or how long ago it was, or what happened that these two couldnt be together. It could be about a first loveor not. The people in the song could be teenagersor not. Its really about finding love, and having to move on but never really forgetting how it felt. And we all wonder whether people in our past ever think of usI think thats a pretty universal feeling. I love the simplicity and emotion of this track. And I love Jimi Westbrooks vocal on this. In my mind its kind of like the other person, the one she is remembering, is thinking of her too. Sweet.

I remember how time stood still and how you made me feel Like you were mine forever, lying there together, that summer of love Tangled up in a big blue sky, like we could almost fly And every now and then I wonder if you think about us And that summer of love, that summer of love

When You Love A Sinner

(Chip G. Boyd, Jay Clementi, Kacey Musgraves) This is a beautiful piece of songwriting. I aspire to write a song like this someday. There are so many great lines in it. Its simple and complex all at the same time. Its honest, real, strong and vulnerable. I never get tired of hearing it.

I wrote this song with Josh Kear and Mark Irwin. I knew that I was going to Atlanta to record my album for a few days, leaving Delaney, Emma, and Ava in Nashville. I knew it was going to be difficult for all of us to be away from each other and I just drew from that. Also, there have been times when I have been away from them and got that phone call with one of them upsetthat is so hard. It doesnt really have to be about your kids though. I think its about being away from anyone that you love and sending your love to them in your thoughts. By the way, thats actually Avas foot tapping throughout the song. Her little Converse Chuck Taylors tapping away!
