Exam Review: CAD

General guidelines: 1) Exam will be in two parts. 2) Part-I will be designing a solid model assembly and draw various views e.g. projection view, sectional view, auxiliary view etc. using Solidworks. 3) Part-II will be multiple choice/descriptive questions (sample questions are given below).

Important topics covered for exam are as follows: A) Different types of coordinate systems used in computer aided design B) Drawing views: Standard orthographic views used in First angle projection and third angle projection system C) Types of surfaces: Normal, slanted, Rounded, Oblique D) Types of lines: Solid, hidden, centerline, etc. Precedence of lines in drawing views E) Threads and fasteners: Pitch of threads, Thread callouts, Calculation of internal depth, length of fasteners, etc. F) Dimensioning concepts: Extension lines, dimensions lines, leaders, hole callouts, conventions for displaying counter bore, counter sink holes etc., ANSI conventions and rules for appropriate dimensioning of objects, Ordinate, baseline, chain dimensioning concepts, etc. G) Shaft-hole tolerance calculations. Sample questions: Q.1 Draw three standard orthographic views of following solid model using third angle projection method. Dimensioning is not needed in the views.

Q.2 Find out the maximum and minimum dimensions of length E for the following 2D drawing using baseline and chain dimensions. Consider standard tolerances of 1 for all the dimensions. A = 50 B = 60 C = 10 D = 30 Standard Tolerance: 1 C D E 200

Q.4 Two blocks of 20 mm depth each are required to be assembled together using M5x1.25x30 fastener. The minimum internal threaded depth of the bottom block in your design should be equal to A. B. C. D. 10 mm 11.25 mm 12.50 mm 13 mm

Q.5 In dimensioning the drawing, a leader line is A. Line that extends in a vertical direction. B. Line that extends in a horizontal direction. C. Line that extends from extension line to the numerical value of the dimension. D. Line that is drawn at an angle.

Q.6 While indicating the type of lines in the drawing, the precedence takes place as one of the following. A. B. C. D. Center line Hidden line Solid line Center line Solid line Hidden line Solid line Hidden line Center line Solid line Center line Hidden line

Q.7 In CAD drawing, a compound line is a A. B. C. D. Line that intersects two slanted surfaces Line that is both center line and a dimension line. Line that intersects circular arc into two equal sections. Line that is indicated as a solid line and hidden line.
