1 Introduction
1.1 SURPASS Next Generation Access
Operators around the world currently face the challenges of offering a complete service portfolio to their customers. They are continuously introducing new revenue generating services especially in the area of broadband access - and realize that they have to transform their voice-optimized network into a multiservice IP network, supporting real-time applications, e-commerce solutions, multimedia and mobility services. Access technologies must offer cost-effective solutions to address these challenges. While traditionally multiple access technologies have been used to effectively address different market and customer segments, the demand is there to handle all required services by means of one single, universal access platform. Next Generation access thus asserts the operators claim to attain a single platform that supports any service irrespective whether it is video, voice or data. SURPASS next generation access solutions give operators the flexibility to deploy, replace or expand access equipment with both traditional multi-vendor ATM/TDM networks and any multi-vendor next generation network. SURPASS next generation access solutions can be effectively combined with existing narrowband and broadband gear thus offering a clear and painless migration path to the next generation, all-IP network of the future. These solutions protect the operators access investment and allow him to migrate the backbone as the core part of the network at any time, whenever it makes economic sense. SURPASS next generation access solutions comprise SURPASS evolving voice access for voice services and SURPASS DSL broadband access.

Shelf Architecture
The SURPASS hiX 5200 uses a modular physical design with multiple shelves that form an access node. The architecture supports large deployments through a multiple shelf concept, consisting of main shelves and several local extension shelves, each being controlled by the main shelf with one single central processor unit for the whole system. The interconnection of main shelf and its associated extension shelves is realized through bus extension adapter cables. Each main shelf, see Fig. 2, consists of central switching unit (CXU or CXU_T_E1) slots for control and sixteen universal slots that can be equipped with line units (LU) and subscriber units (SU) to provide subscriber services such as POTS, ISDN, ADSL, SHDSL and VDSL. Two out of these sixteen slots can optionally be equipped with the central voice unit CVU to support migration towards a VoIP access gateway. The CVU is a part of its successor version SURPASS hiX V1.2.

The extension shelves, see Fig. 3, are designed for the support of voice line units (POTS, ISDN). Sixteen slots can be equipped with line units while the remaining two slots are prepared for the so-called extension units EXU_T to handle the control from the main shelf. A chain of up to four extension shelves may be connected to one main shelf. The interconnection between main shelf and extension shelves is via redundant TDM links using direct electrical cabling between the central switching units CXU_T_E1 in the main shelf and the EXU_T in the first extension shelf.

4.1.3
V5.2 Interface
SURPASS hiX 5200 supports V5.2 interfaces to local exchange connections for narrowband call processing. The bearer and the call control of the subscribers connected to the narrowband line units LU_POTS64 and LU_ISDN32 will be transmitted via V5.2 interfaces to the local exchange (LE). The V5.2 interface is characterized by:
st nd Support of V5.2 1 and 2 edition according ITU-T Support of POTS and ISDN-BRA subscribers Support of up to four V5.2 interfaces using up to 16 E1 links total (V5.2S-interface with eight E1 links for inter-working with Nokia Siemens Networks EWSD and V5.2 interface with 16 E1 are possible) Support of E1 transmission via G.703/704 interface Support of up to 5120 subscribers (the maximum number of supported ISDN subscribers is 2048) Support of V5.2-profiling for customer project specific adaptations
P P P P
The V5 core has the following functionality: Termination of the different data links for control, BCC, link control, PSTN and protection protocols A frame relay function to relay the ISDN D-channel frames System management to control the processing of the different state machines in case of start-up of the V5 interface, of failure, of protection switching V5 resource management to control the timeslot interchanger in order to cross connect the timeslots at the LE side with the subscriber side ports via the TDM back plane. V5.2 BCC protocol controlled by the local exchange will perform the timeslot allocation. Termination of the layer 3 for all protocols, which are transported via a data link The 16 physical E1 interfaces used for the V5.2 interfaces are distributed between both redundant central switching units. In case of loss of one central switching unit the number of available links is reduced to eight, because the mechanical connections of the E1 links are divided on two plug-in units.

4.2.2
Software Upgrade
Within SURPASS hiX 5200 SW upgrades are performed with minimized service interruption regarding user traffic. This can be reached by separating the software upgrade into two steps: Download of the relevant module(s) to the intended unit(s) not service affecting Activation of the new load(s) service affecting The first step of the SW upgrade is possible during normal operation, because the download phase is performed in background without service or traffic interruption. New SW is downloaded via the internal connections towards the SURPASS hiX 5200internal and SURPASS hiX 5500-internal peripheral units (PUs). In SURPASS hiX 5200 redundancy for the CXU_T_E1 and the EXU_T is provided. In case of SW upgrade of the CXU_T_E1 this means that the new SW is downloaded to both CXU_T_E1. Afterwards the standby CXU_T_E1 is activated and when the internal procedures have been finished it takes over the traffic. This swap takes less than 50 ms and is not service affecting. The activation phase for the line and subscriber units is service-affecting with respect to the user connections. At the end, the new SW is also activated on the former active CXU_T_E1. Both actions download and activation - are separately requested by the TMN OS. Within the TMN OS requests, it can be differentiated whether only one specific unit or all units of a specific type or the complete system are to be upgraded.
4.3
Redundancy
SURPASS hiX 5500 supports redundancy for all central switching units. The purpose is to improve the line-down-time of all subscriber interfaces and to reduce operation & maintenance costs of the system (deferred maintenance). Line redundancy is supported for STM-1 optical interfaces to improve the system availability in case of fiber breaks. Switchover processes for plug-in unit redundancy are partly independent. A plug-in unit switchover causes a line switchover, only if the active line was located on the plug-in unit, which became un-operational. A plug-in unit switchover caused by an operator command will not cause a line switchover. Therefore it is quite possible that the active line is served by the standby unit and vice versa. All plug-in units have two power supply inputs. So a real redundant power supply distribution are realized. According to the applied principles, the plug-in unit redundancy control is based on a work split between HW and SW. The HW control part implements following functions: Selector control for narrowband subscriber interfaces on line units, relay control for system interfaces on the plug-in unit PM_B and control of redundancy state dependent board internal HW components (so as E1 Matrix, synchronization block) via CXU_T_E1/EXU_T active signal Support of both redundant (dual CXU_T_E1/EXU_T) as non-redundant (single CXU_T_E1/EXU_T) equipping HW active/standby pre-decision during plug-in unit start up by considering presence and operational state of the mate plug-in unit and CXU_T_E1/EXU_T position in the default working/protection slot

Narrowband Part The CXU_T_E1 narrowband part performs the physical and frame termination of the E1 links, the HW related functions of V5.2 processing and the TDM star interface to narrowband line units. It consists of following components: E1 line interface circuit (optional equipped for application in central locations) For operation in central locations, the CXU_T_E1 provides the physical termination for 8 x E1 symmetrical links with impedance of 120 . The line interface consists of overvoltage protection, impedance matching components and magnetic. E1 framer The CXU provides E1 framing functions (i.e. frame alignment, elastic store, timeslot 0 insertion resp. evaluation and removal) for 8 E1 links. TDM star interface Transmission of TDM payload and management data between the CXU_T_E1 and narrowband line units. Eight E1 ports are supported. From the switch side, the signal come to the line interface circuit. Then follow the matrix and the framer. The framer has connection to the TDM interface module. The TDM interface module processes the data to the backplane and to the CXU_T_E1 microcontroller. All ways are bi-directional. Clocking Part The clocking part consists of the synchronization unit. Power Supply The power supply units generate the board internal voltages for circuit operation from the redundant 48 V battery voltage. The power supply supports a redundant power feeding of the E1 matrix and the line interface circuits.

Test bus access for only one POTS interface (port No. 64) is provided in order to perform the outward test on demand for the subscriber lines of LU_ISDN32. TBA is realized with two relays to switch over the subscriber line to the test bus and discharge the capacitor of a connected NTBA and the line capacity. Controller and interface module The controller is the central part of the LU and provides the following main functions: Two independent interfaces via TDM star to the central units with PCM and address channel and message channel Termination of the V5.2 PSTN protocol and call processing Control of line measuring and self-test procedures Power distribution module to generate and supervise all internal voltages LU_POTS64 has a typical basic power consumption of 9.0 W. Each busy port takes additional 1.57 W in the average, each ringing port additional 1.04 W. The typical power dissipation is 9.0 W plus 0.94 W per busy port.
5.3.2
LU_ISDN32 is physically connected with the TDM interfaces A and/or B to the system. The line unit can be plugged in into any plug-in unit slot with TDM interface, see Fig. 8.

General characteristics of the LU_ISDN32: Number of interfaces The line unit LU_ISDN32 provides 32 ISDN BRA interfaces. Each subscriber pair wires (outward connection) is able to switch over to the test bus. Simultaneous only one twisted pair wires can be switched on to the test bus. Put into operation LU_ISDN32 can be hot inserted and pulled out. Other units will never be disturbed by handling with subscriber units. The line unit can be plugged in into any narrowband plug-in unit slot. Lightning and Overvoltage protection LU_ISDN32 is protected against destruction through lightning, overvoltage or power contact. Overtemperature protection

Controller and interface module The controller is the central part of the LU and provides the following main functions: Control and supervision of the narrowband ISDN line interface circuits Control and supervision of the remote feeding control circuits Termination of the V5.2 port control protocol Control of ISDN layer 1 Temperature supervision and control of the indicator LEDs on the board Control of self-test procedures and test bus access ISDN line interface module The module provides ISDN interfaces via 2-wire transceiver inclusive of adaptive echo cancellation, in coupling of remote power feeding into the wires and protection against overvoltage and lightning. For outward subscriber line tests, it is possible to connect each subscriber wire pair with the test bus by relay switching. The remote feeding control supervises the remote power feeding process. Each subscriber line is fed by a central DC/DC-converter and the feeding current is supervised and limited. If a threshold for the feeding current ( 45 mA) is violated for about 1.5 s the remote power feeding will be switched off for 22 s to 30 s. After this time the remote power feeding is switched on again. The line feeding is resistant to short cuts. Overtemperature protection per channel is integrated on chip. Test bus access (TBA) Test bus connecting on demand for each line interface for outward measuring. One connection to the test bus is allowed in a shelf at the time. The power distribution module generates and supervises all internal voltages. Each ISDN port is able to feed one NTBA with 1.1 W in normal feeding (acc. to TS102080). LU_ISDN32 has a typical basic power consumption of 11.1 W. Each active port takes additional 0.96 W for normal NTBA operation or 1.81 W for emergency NTBA operation in the average. The typical power dissipation is 11.1 W plus 0.35 W (normal NTBA operation) or 0.5 W (emergency NTBA operation) per active port.

Features
The ACI offers a wide variety of comfortable management functions for the FCAPS functional areas of network element management acc. to the ITU-T M.3010 standard: Security administration Configuration management including SW management and inventory data retrieval Alarm surveillance, line test and equipment test Retrieval of quality data
A50010-X3-A1-6-7618
Value-added applications
33
Additionally functions are offered to ensure an easy and safe operation of the management system, like Data surveillance and recovery SW Management Automatic consistency checks of the database Time-scheduled execution of the management tasks Export of data Logging of system events The value added applications are optional features, offering functions like northbound interfaces (TMF CORBA, SNMP) or NE access control. The intuitive user interface is based on the graphical representation of the network and the equipment within the network, which displays all information up-to-date to the user. A network map shows the network topology and the states of network elements. It is possible to subsume network elements to sub-networks, depending on the overall size of the network and geographical locations. The equipment view delivers information on the configuration and current states of the subracks and network elements. The user interface is optimized to finish given tasks by only a few mouse clicks.

Fig. 13 AccessIntegrator Graphical User Interface ACIs main window is opened automatically at start-up time and will only be closed at log-out time. This main window is the central window with menu-bar, toolbar and status bar. Further windows with icons, various views, dialog boxes, etc. are opened either via the menu or via double click on an object, for which these operations are defined. All objects (e.g. sub networks, network elements, etc.), which are displayed in the views, provide a context pop-up menu, which offers the most important functions available for this object. Access to the functionality via the menu-bar or by pop-menus is context-sensitive; i.e. the user can only call those functions that are available under the current context. ACI offers a comfortable equipment view of SURPASS hiX NE showing the shelf with the plug-in units and their states.

7.3.2
Alarm Management
The Alarm management is a key functionality of every management system. The user must be sure, that the alarm status shown in the management client is really the same as in the managed network. In addition, the occurrence of high alarm loads must be handled without any problems. Beside these key features the following features are implemented: Secure synchronization mechanism for alarm log, alarm list, alarm status list, alarm counter and media interface High performance and functionality of the alarm log A global alarm list presents all active alarms The log record structure as described in ITU-T X.733 and X.735 User-friendly and high performance filter and sorting mechanism in alarm list and alarm log Structured naming for alarms (based on ITU-T) necessary for user-friendly filtering and easier interpretation of alarms
7.3.3
Security
The security policy of the ACI system captures 3 mechanisms: User identification and authentication: Login to ACI is identical to the OS login. The user group(s) of the user determines the access rights within ACI, see next points. Access rights to network elements: Access to NE, as a whole can be enabled/disabled. That works by grouping the NE into domains and assigning them to user groups. By default the global domain capturing all NE is assigned. Execution permissions: To user groups execution rights for ACI functions are assigned. That assignment is corresponding to the menu structure of ACI. If access rights to network elements are used the execution rights are individual to user groups and NE domains. The platforms like Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating system deliver an integrated set of tools and services that lets administrators implement security within the enterprise or protect the privacy of inter-company communications.
7.3.4
Interfaces
For time-critical tasks, such as alarm forwarding, on-line interfaces are a prerequisite for management system integration. For less time-critical tasks such as log export or configuration data import, off-line interfaces are the generally preferred solution. ACI provides standard TMF CORBA interfaces as well as SNMP interfaces to communicate with external systems. ACI allows exporting a wide variety of data in form of ASCII files. Exportable data include lists, logs, configuration data and inventory data. The export can be initiated manually via the export button in the corresponding window and partly on a timescheduled basis (e.g. lists, logs).
36

7.3.5
Profile Management
To speed up and facilitate the configuration process for SURPASS hiX, ACI provides a very powerful profile concept. A profile is a set of configuration data, needed to completely configure a specific entity of the SURPASS hiX. Profiles may be created by the operator, named, stored, and assigned to the corresponding entities. In the EM for SURPASS hiX profiles are available for xDSL lines and for traffic parameters.
