ABOUT ANTI DOPING LAB QATAR

Taking drugs to enhance performance is contrary to the fundamental values and principles of sport. To take drugs or use doping methods in sport or to assist someone in doing so is unacceptable in any form and is universally recognised as a form of cheating. Anti-Doping Lab (ADL) Qatar is the first specialised laboratory of its kind in the Middle East. The state of the art facility will provide anti-doping testing for athletes across the Gulf region as well as West Asia. Doping control tests will be administered during competition, training and even in the off-season to catch cheats and protect athletes. In addition, ADL Qatar will also strive to make drug education part of health education, lay down norms regulating the use of technology in sport and provide accurate and current information to athletes to help them think critically and make the wise choice of avoiding doping in any form. On 4th of December, 2007, the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council ( GCC ) have welcomed the will of the State of Qatar to establish an internationally accredited Anti-Doping Lab. His Highness, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani , the Heir Apparent, took personal interest in this matter and a team was chosen to turn the dream into reality . The Emiri Decree No 14 ( 2011 ) was issued to establish the Anti-Doping Laboratory as an independent entity and approved creation of the Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr. Mohammed Al Maadeed . The board has appointed Dr. Mohammed AL Sayrafi as the General Manager of the Lab with all his knowledge and expertise in the field. Supported by a team of highly qualified scientists , ADL Qatar is working towards achieving compliance for ISO/IEC17025 accreditation. THE LOGO STORY

Anti-Doping Laboratory Qatar uses circles as the main graphic element for its brand with the unique mixture of decent grey and shiny orange. This unique design of integrated grey and orange circles was chosen carefully in harmony with our identity and destination . The circles symbolize Blood Cells and DNA , but mostly abstracted from the Sea Urchin Genome. This Sea Genome is a two inch purple spiny creature that lives on the ocean oor. It is believed to have a great value in researches related to human diseases . Known for producing a natural doping substance, it has been only natural to use the shape of this little urchin in our Logo. The integrated circles are also used to signify the collaboration and harmony Anti-Doping Lab Qatar has with other partners like WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) , RADO, Aspire Zone, Qatar Anti- Doping Commission and Qatar Olympic Committee . It also exemplies the different kind of elds testing which include but not limited to sports. Circles interlinked together as all are working together towards a Doping Free Committee. The main color is the warm orange with shades of grey as the sub-color. From the gold dunes of Qatar , the orange color represents determination and creativity. Orange being an energetic color, it symbolize the right kind of energy a human body should acquire away from doping. The neutral color of grey depicts the objectivity and reliability of ADLQ and its activities/ operations. It simplies balance which is one of the most important aspirations for Anti-doping Labs to be fair and ethical.

Located within Aspire Zone, ADL Qatar will endeavor to eliminate drug use in all sports and uphold the Olympic ideals of fair play and sportsmanship. In the process , the Lab will make sport in all its forms fairer, safer and healthier for all stakeholders, foremost among them athletes. This beautiful 3 storeys Lab will be situated on a 10,000 square meter land, right across from Aspetar. The 1st oor will host all administration staff and the Management team. The 2nd oor will be dedicated to Anti-Doping testing only as this will be the core business. The 3rd oor will be available for Anti-Doping research and open to researchers who are working in similar elds, as well as a Toxicology lab, and a Multi-purpose lab to complement the clinical laboratories in the State of Qatar. The Multi-purpose lab will also cover the requirements and needs for a highly sophisticated analytical lab in Qatar. The Lab is equipped with cutting-edge technology and the most advanced equipment in the eld. The Building will be operational on April 2012 .

THE BUILDING

WHAT IS DOPING?

The word (doping ) has rst appeared in the English dictionary back at the end of the nineteenth century. However, it is believed that the word is much older than that. Some resources state that the origin of the word goes back to the Dutch word ( Doop ) which is a thick dipping sauce made from grapes skin that was used by Ancient Greeks. Others indicate that the name of "dop" was given by an African tribe, the Kafrs, back in the 18th century, to describe a beverage that was largely consumed in religious ceremonies as a stimulant drink. The death of the Danish cyclist in the 1960 Olympics, in addition to other evidence of wide spreading use of life threatening substances in sports, have pushed for the rst denition of Doping by the Council in Europe back in 1963 : (The administering or use of any substance s in any form alien to the body or of physiological substances in abnormal amounts and with abnormal methods by healthy persons with the exclusive aim of attaining an articial and unfair increase in performance in competition. Furthermore, various psychological measures to increase performance in sports must be regarded doping . Where treatment with a medicine must be undergone, which as a result of its nature or dosage is capable of raising physiological capability beyond normal level, such treatment must be considered doping and shall rule out eligibility for competition).

The use of stimulating substances to enhance performance is much older than the ofcial recording of the denition. Doping seems to be as old as man himself. And has been used particularly in sports and wars. When it all started , it was absolutely acceptable and rather necessary to have this kind of HELP to enhance mans powers The Scandinavian Mythology mentions use of a mixture made from psych active mushrooms that increased physical powers signicantly at the risk of insanity. Ancient America , particularly Peru and Mexico , had used Coca leaves and Peyote as an endurance and a protection against sickness. The second half of the 19th century marks the beginning of reliable records of Doping in Sports. In 1807, Abraham Wood, a participant in an endurance walking race in Britain, confessed taking laudanum, or opium , to keep him awake for 24 hours during the competition. In 1904, at the St. Louis marathon, Tom Hicks had just won the race but collapsed and was proven to have taken strychnine and cognac before the race. In 1993, records showed that Germany had a systematic doping of East Athletes from 1971 until reunication in 1990.

HISTORY OF DOPING

WHY FIGHT DOPING?

Taking performance enhancing substances is not only unfair as it gives an advantage to some athletes over others , but it also puts the addict person in serious danger . Common psychological/behavioral changes include mood swings, aggression, mania, depression, and dependence. Not to mention feelings of anxiety or paranoia, memory impairment, chronic bronchitis, and Impaired balance. Results of taking Performance Enhancing Drugs can be fatal since over the years, there have been several death cases caused by doping. The rst reported case occurred back in 1896 when the English cyclist A. Linton passed away due to ephedrine intake during the race of Paris Bordeaux . In 1967, the world witnessed the death of the British cyclist Tom Simpson in the Tour de France as a result of amphetamines intake . In 1968, the German Box ghter Jupp Elze died after he has taken an amphetamine cocktail. As a result, in 1968, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published the rst banned list of drugs and implemented the rst formal drug testing program at the Montreal Olympics. The IOC transferred the management of the Prohibited List to WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency).

The Prohibited list includes prohibited substances and prohibited methods. Prohibited Substances: A. Prohibited at all times : 1. ANABOLIC AGENTS 2. PEPTIDE HORMONES, GROWTH FACTORS AND RELATED SUBSTANCES. 3. BETA-2 AGONISTS 4. HORMONE AND METABOLIC MODULATORS 5. DIURETICS AND OTHER MASKING AGENTS B. Prohibited In Competition only : 1. STIMULANTS 2. NARCOTICS 3. CANNABINOIDS 4. GLUCOCORTICOSTEROIDS Prohibited Methods : 1. ENHANCEMENT OF OXYGEN TRANSFER. 2. CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL MANIPULATION. 3. GENE DOPING. In addition to substances prohibited In Competition in certain sports only. Every day new substances are added to the list and the list gets updated annually.

THE PROHIBITED LIST

WADA

The World Anti-Doping Agency was established back in 1999 as an international independent agency composed and funded equally by the sport movement and governments of the world. Its key activities include scientic research, education, development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) the document harmonizing anti-doping policies in all sports and all countries. WADA is a Swiss private law Foundation. Its seat is in Lausanne, Switzerland, and its headquarters are in Montreal, Canada. WADA works towards a vision of a world where all athletes compete in a doping-free sporting environment.

The Anti-Doping Lab Qatar (ADLQ) was established for the purpose of conducting comprehensive analytical anti-dope testing targeting illegal performance enhancing drugs in athletes. With a powerful combination of the latest sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, state of the art facilities, and senior staff with nearly 50 combined years of experience in the eld, ADLQ is poised to play a crucial role in anti-doping vigilance activities in the country as well as the region. The Lab actually contains three labs: 1. Anti-Doping Lab: Through the Anti-Doping Lab, we aim to become the Lab for all Anti-doping Analysis for Qatar, GCC, international and national sports authorities. Especially with major events coming in the region like the Olympic Games, the World Cup 2022 and others, we will be able to provide efciency and peace of mind for those events and similar ones for Qatar and the region. Accredited by WADA, and following the most advanced technology, we will be able to detect the maximum number of prohibited substances. There is also a future plan for animal doping control. 2.
