Work (30% Weighting) Individual Assessment Course Assessment (CA) Brief Background This CA helps you develop a critical view of narratives used in a variety of everyday media/texts, essentially works created by some people to convince others. The Task Step 1 Selection of media/texts Select a narrative (or an extract of the work) from any of the media/texts below: a. Speech b. Advertisement c. Art work d. Music Do a realistic selection and you are encouraged to consult your tutors on your choice. Step 2 Analysis of its persuasiveness (or the lack of) Critically analyse the work and evaluate its persuasiveness using at least two of the narrative elements introduced in the term. The elements are: a. Plot b. Themes and Messages/Intention c. Characters d. Perspectives Step 3 Citing sources of information Please cite your sources using the Harvard style. Consolidate your sources on a separate page titled List of references. You should refer to the librarys guide available at Apr 2012 CA1 -1 http://eliser.lib.sp.edu.sg/page/citation#compiling. Acknowledging your sources prevents you from failing the plagiarism check (see Step 5). It also shows respect for the information. Step 4 Presentation of your analysis You will make a short presentation of your analysis individually. You may use the template to help you organise your presentation or deliver your presentation. This is also the write up you will submit on SafeAssign in Week 4. You have to print out the SafeAssign report

and submit it, along with the annotated write up, on your presentation date. Refer to http://kb.blackboard.com/display/SAFE/Interpret+Reports for more details on SafeAssign. On presentation day, you will have a MAXIMUM of 10 minutes to present your evaluation (including setup time, if required) and respond to a question. Powerpoint slides are not required. You will be asked to stop when time is up at these points: Maximum of 3 minutes to set up & show the material Maximum of 5 minutes to present Maximum of 2 minutes to answer questions

*Note that the system may experience high traffic volume over the weekend as it is highly likely that many students will be logging in to the system to upload the write up on Saturday or Sunday. You have been advised against such eleventh hour submission (especially if your lessons are during the earlier half of the week). Singapore Polytechnic and your lecturer are not liable for any system crashes or report generation failure resulting from such last-minute submissions which will ultimately result in you failing to meet the deadlines.

Late Penalty You will only receive 50% of the mark awarded to your assignment if you submit it late i.e. after the deadline. Deadline here refers to the end of the respective lesson in the week your assignment is due. If you have a valid reason for not meeting the deadline (e.g. hospitalisation), do let your tutor know early so that an alternative deadline can be arranged for you.

1) What are some elements of a narrative used by creator (writer, speaker, artist or musician)? Why did the creator use these elements? Consider at least two of the following:

Apr 2012 CA1 -5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Im a fan of Fahrenheit! Can I analyse their songs? For the purpose of fair assessment, only English-medium works will be accepted in the CA. Works in a foreign-language containing official English subtitles or write-ups will also be accepted. I have an advertisement that is very interesting, but it seems rather vulgar. Shall I use it in this CA? While it is good that you have picked up the fundamental skills to critique a work, do remember that there are requirements for any CA and for this CA, you should not select anything that is offensive. Consult your lecturer when in doubt. Do also remember that there must be persuasive or narrative elements in the work for you to analyse so that you will at least meet the requirements of the CA to pass the CA. Can I analyse my own creative art work? While it is good that you have found a creative outlet to express yourself, this CA seeks to get students to think about what others were thinking of when they created a work to express themselves or a point. You should widen your knowledge and critical analysis skills by looking at someone elses published works. I am interested in Reagans speech. May I analyse that? You may analyse his speech, provided it is easy for you to pick out the narrative elements in it. Do note too that you have a maximum of 10min for your presentation, so choose a speech that is not too long or you will not have sufficient time for a fuller analysis. Do I have to use the full 10 minutes to score full marks? No, you dont have to use the full 10 minutes. A good evaluation can be succinct. A close-ended answer without critical examination of the work is not ideal, though. Will my annotated write up be marked? The template responses which you will be submitting on SafeAssign will not be assessed; however, this annotated report will serve as a check against plagiarism. The requirement to have it submitted on the first day of assessment also removes any unfair advantage students in the later week may have over students presenting in the first assessment week.
