Chico Friends of the Library Sponsor New Circulation Desk Project at Chico Branch Library
An exciting new project is underway at the Chico Branch Library. After many years of supporting a huge volume of patron traffic, the Circulation Desk is currently being remodeled, thanks to the ongoing and generous support of the Chico Friends of the Library. Later, new floor coverings will be installed. The replacement of the Circulation Desk is expected to last approximately four weeks, and marks only a temporary shift in day to day service at the library. A simple detour has been created to guide visitors into the main branch, while also allowing patrons and their families to see the remarkable changes taking place in the Circulation area each day. During this remodel period, patrons are asked to return books, DVDs, and any borrowed materials through the drop-box depository located outside of the library on the parking lot side of the building. This will help library staff manage items until the new desk is complete. The way to enter the library is through a door to the childrens room, located off of the main breezeway. A sign is positioned outside of the door and is a clearly marked entry point which takes the patron into the childrens room where two temporary Circulation computers are located. Staff will happily help check out books at the Childrens desk area, and two more check-out computers are located at the main Reference Desk for convenience. The Chico branch is maintaining regular hours of operation Monday through Saturday throughout this phase of the remodel project in order to best serve the community. The library is offering all normal services during the transition period, including Wi-Fi connectivity, public internet computer availability, Storytimes, events, and reference services. In January of this year alone, 28,808 people visited the Chico branch library, over 50,000 items were checked out, and nearly 4,700 people utilized the public internet stations. The new Circulation Desk will also feature the self check-out machines that patrons have been enjoying for over a year, thus streamlining the entire process for all visitors. For added convenience, patrons may also visit the library website 24 hours a day, seven days a week at http://www.buttecounty.net/bclibrary to check account status, renew loans, request books from other branches, access databases and tutors, check out eBooks and much more.

The Turner Presents Student Print and Clay Works April 26-May 15
The 17th Annual Juried Student Print Exhibition & 10th Ink/Clay at the Janet Turner Print Museum will feature cutting edge printmaking and clay works by student artists, giving viewers a sense of what is happening in the art world right now. The print exhibition, juried by art professional Jill Marie Mason, an artist who works in a variety of media, including print, photography, video, and installation, will run April 26-May 15 at The Turner Print Museum, located in Meriam Library. The jury process is an important component of this exhibition because it gives students the opportunity to have their work viewed by an outside professional while showing it in a professional setting, said Turner Museum curator Catherine Sullivan. They can see themselves in relation to other artists while the juror gives them constructive criticism, noted Sullivan. For many it will be the first time they see their art with their peers. Mason teaches in the Department of Art and Design at Central Michigan University where she is the 2011-2012 Stephen L. Barstow Artist in Residence. She has completed residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art and Albion College and was awarded the Kate Cheney Chappell Scholarship in Graphics by the Haystack Mountain School of Craft. Mason is currently creating artworks for an upcoming exhibition, In the Dark, that explores death in art and popular culture. While at CSU, Chico, she will work on a series of prints that relate to this exhibition. A joint awards announcement/reception with the University Art Gallery, Taylor Hall and the BMU 3rd Floor Gallery, all of which are having student exhibitions, will take place May 4 at 5 p.m. in RowlandTaylor Recital Hall (PAC 134). Following the awards announcement, all galleries will be open to the public. Many types of printmaking techniques will be featured in The Turner exhibition, including relief, intaglio, screen prints and ceramics. Ten years ago the Turner curator decided to include clay works in this endof-school-year student exhibition because both art forms share a sense of surface texture, detail, hand manipulation and color, said Sullivan. This exhibition, along with the BMU 3rd Floor Gallery and the University Art Gallery student exhibitions puts the freshest of student produced work into a two block area on campus, said Sullivan. If you want to know what artists are involved in right now, what they see as art dialog, you should come to all three exhibitions! As part of this exhibit a select number of prints by CSU, Chico printmaking alums will be displayed in the Ayres Hall first floor cases on the CSU, Chico campus, 1st and Salem streets. The Turner is located in the Meriam Library on the CSU, Chico campus, adjacent to the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, and is open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Groups and classes can go to the Turner website -- www. theturner.org -- to make arrangements to view exhibits outside the public hours and docent tours. For more information, call Sullivan at 898-4476 or email csullivan@ csuchico.edu.

Natural & Crafted Worlds

Avenue 9 Gallery presents the exhibit Natural & Crafted Worlds: Michele Miller & Karma Ganzler, Photography (April 27-May 19), with a Friday April 27 reception from 5 to 8pm. Miller and Ganzier share a love for distant travel, including Nepal, Bali and Guatemala, where the excitement of discovery infuses their photographs. They are also entranced by familiar Butte County views, from backyard trees to migrating birds in the rice fields. Millers photography and jewelry booth has been a favorite stopping place for visitors to Chicos Saturday Farmers Market for many years. Just back from Central America, she says of her Avenue 9 Gallery exhibit: My photographs feature the bold colors and textures from architecture in Antigua, Guatemala, a village famous for its colonial churches. I loved roaming through streets, stopping to photograph whatever caught my eye, such as the rich colors of a cracked wall.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oroville Hosts All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valleys Oroville Teen Center campus will be hosting an All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 28, 2012. The event will be held at the Oroville Teen Center, 2959 Lower Wyandotte Road in the Southside Community Center from 7:00 am to 10:30 am. Tickets are only $6 per person and $20 per family of 4 and include all you can pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice. The delicious meal will be prepared by Charles Peck, the lead chef for the Oroville Juvenile Hall, which is the home to our other local Boys & Girls Club. All proceeds from the event will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs Oroville Teen Center to help purchase basketball hoops, balls and other supplies. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oroville has a goal of raising $40,000 from the local community to fund its programs and services for the year. Community funding serves as a match to Foundation grants that help support the Oroville Teen Center and the Southside Community. Our children need a safe place to go after school, especially when many of our families cannot be there for them when the school bell rings at the end of the day, Chief Executive Officer, Rashell Brobst states. The purpose of our organization is to be open everyday to serve the kids that need us the most by providing a wide range of programs from homework help, job skill lessons, or just a responsible caring adult for them to interact with. For more information about the Pancake Breakfast or to purchase tickets, contact the Jon Rango at Oroville Teen Center 530-5333067 or visit www.bgcnv.org.

HEALTHY LIVING

Those of you who have read my column in the past know how much I admire families who work together, play together, and support one another in their ventures. I must tell you that last week I walked into Pioneer Auto-Body Shop on Feather River Blvd at Montgomery, and was startled to hear, then see, a choo choo train traveling on a specially designed track that travels from the front ofce around the ceiling area. Raquel Nolind saw the look on my face and said: We dont have time to play with our toys at home, so we bring them here. Apparently John and Racquel Nolind live the life I describe as perfect. They work together, play together, and bring their daughter, and toys to work (and family petsAlley & Gladiator, 2 over-sized dogs lounge in the back room). Congratulations, you beautiful couple. Check out their new sign: Pioneer Shipping on the awning. Theyre an authorized shipping outlet for Fed Ex and United States Postal. Since this is the last week in April, I feel a need to back-track a bit and catch up with the movement going on around town. In my last column I told you about The Depot Steak House and all the exciting things happening. Its open now and doing a ourishing business. We discussed the Brinton family who has owned and operated The Hof Brau and that they moved and expanded their business to a new location, taking over Checkers site. I mentioned that Blondies, on Mitchell/Myers, now promotes Bunco games on the rst Tuesday of each month. Now, you may not know where any of these places are at this moment. But, if you pick up your free copy of THE SOURCE, you will have in your hands a very informative magazine that will direct you to wherever you want to go in Oroville, and/or provide a phone number. I use The Source on a daily basis. It ts neatly in a basket next to my telephone and chair. Because I am a Newcomer to this community, I also nd it handy to keep a copy in my car. Let me know what it was like when you checked out one of the aforementioned restaurants. You can send me a snail mail, contact me by E-Mail, (della@diggernews.com), or say Hello on Facebook. The Senior Cafe, has moved, and is now located on Feather River Blvd., and it has more room and better lighting than the one on Oro Dam Blvd. According to Reba Morse, age 85, The luncheons are great, and it is better parking. I meet my daughter, Glenna Gilbert, here for lunch a few times a week that is pretty much the extent of my social life. According to Manny Saiz, Manager of the Senior Cafe: We must not forget the purpose of the Senior Cafe. It is Senior Socialization, not necessarily the food. These people get up, get dressed and are out and about ve days a week. No, the meals are not free; we hope most will donate. There are a lot of overhead costs involved, like the rent and utilities. Today, there are more people understanding why their donation is important. I sure hope the program will continue for years to come. While I was hanging out at the Senior Cafe I chatted with Sharon Samuelson. Shes the happygo-lucky, self-appointed beverage server, who also brings the donuts. Oh yes, another familiar face: Diane Van Glider, the Queen of Line Dancing. How I love watching her and her group at Gold Country Casino, where we discussed starting a new beginner class of Line Dancers somewhere else.
