(Clockwise from top) Athletes such as the Javelina football team, Samantha Alvarez and Anthony Washington will compete on a brand new field once the renovations are complete. There are also plans to hold bigger games and tournaments in the future due to the upgrades.
This spring, the ground will begin to break as the new track and turf field will be introduced into Javelina Stadium. Artificial turf and a new track will be installed and will be ready by the 2012 football season. The new field and track will enhance the environment at Javelina Stadium and will make sure that the Javelinas will not miss practice due to rain or a muddy field, said Kenneth Oliver, Texas A&MKingsville Athletic Director. Once the project is completed, our plans are to submit proposals to host a junior college football bowl game in Dec. 2013 and the NCAA Division II national track and field championships in 2015, said Oliver. In addition to the football field and track projects, there will be a new EmbroidMe gift shop at the east entrance to Javelina Stadium. Having opened in 1952, Javelina Stadium has held more than 15,000 fans and is the home to the football and track and field teams. In 2009 Javelina Stadium hosted the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships. It has also been the sight of numerous NCAA Division II Playoff football games. In 1960 the Javelinas had a football record of 230 wins, 62 losses, and 2 ties. The football team have posted perfect seasons at home on 14 different occasions. From 1967 to 1970 the Javelinas had a perfect record of 23-0 and from 1974 to 1976 they went 20-0. The most recent was in 2002 when
they had six wins. Javelina Stadium is also known to hold the record of attendance per game averaging over 11,000 fans in the NCAA Division II. Javelina Stadium also had two football teams inducted into the New York Life/ Javelina Hall of Fame for having won national titles and had a 22-2 winning record in 1969 and 1970. There are now 144 members in the Hall of Fame. There have also 50 football players from AMK who played professional football in the NFL. Of the 50, there were three who went on to become part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Darryl Green, who played for the Washington Redskins, was drafted as a first round pick in 1983 at the age of 23. Green played for 20 years and retired at the age of 42. John Randall, defensive tackle, who went on to play for the Minnesota Vikings in 1990. Randall played 13 years in the NFL and was picked to the Pro Bowl seven times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Another member of the Hall of Fame is Gene Upshaw. In 1967 Upshaw was drafted as the 17th pick for the Oakland Raiders. He played for three AFL Seasons and in 1970 the Raiders moved to the NFL where Upshaw played for 12 more seasons. With the redesign of Javelina Stadium beginning soon, it will add more history. This also allows the town of Kingsville to be even more proud of their hometown university.
