Its so much easier for candidates to do well in an exam if they know exactly what to expect. This is where the British Councils Road to IELTS provides candidates with a unique advantage. It includes 120 hours of intensive work on vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking, helping them to develop their skills to the levels necessary to succeed in the IELTS test.

One of the challenges of IELTS preparation is enabling learners to interpret and describe charts and tables. Road to IELTS includes a wealth of these graphics in more than 70 individual exercises. The program includes detailed explanations of each question type in each part of the exam, and tips on how best to tackle the tasks. The units are organised thematically,

Feedback on Road to IELTS from teachers and students was very positive. They found it user-friendly. They liked the way they could test themselves and get the answers and marks. They also liked being able to repeat exercises if they needed to. They found the subjects of the exercises very useful and relevant to the exam.
Martin Barge Learning Centre Manager Bell International, London

And, crucially, the program simulates the exam itself, enabling candidates to view videos of the Speaking test, and to practise against the clock. The Listening section includes timed academic and social listening activities. Reading activities are based on an impressive array of authentic texts, with extracts from The Economist, New Internationalist, the British Medical Journal, and many more.

using topics commonly found in the IELTS test. The first six units familiarise the student with the basic exam format. Units 7-9 consolidate, using more complex content, and the last three units use combination activities which are very similar to the actual exam. Give your candidates a real advantage with Road to IELTS!

Does using Road to IELTS improve a candidates score?

We looked at the average scores of 130,711 learners who had access to three units of Road to IELTS for a period of a month, prior to taking the test. The findings, left, show that:
Road to IELTS score %

There is a direct correlation between usage and improvement. The candidates who used it the most improve by as much as 64% on their initial score in a given area. This figure probably relates more to familiarisation with test types than language improvement. As the Listening, Reading and Writing activities are closely modelled on the tests in IELTS, it is reasonable to conclude that Road to IELTS really will help learners to perform better in the IELTS test.

Access UK, developed by the University of York, is a video-based, interactive language program that prepares international students for the whole range of situations they may face in the UK. This includes a visit to the doctor, sorting out visa problems, disputes with flat mates, personal safety in a UK city... its all essential input for a smooth transition to UK campus life. The program focuses on language and guidance, with a particular emphasis on the spoken skills, and on vocabulary needed for practical and social situations. Challenges such as making friends, walking home late at night or dealing with a theft are illustrated in a series of video scenes which progress to interactive activities. Filmed in and around a UK university, the video gives learners access to authentic English and genuine situations, and the opportunity to bring this to life through active viewing. You can make Access UK available pre-departure so that students arrive

with a solid grounding of the skills they need, or post-arrival to help them settle in and prepare for their course.
The program comes in two versions: 1. The Self access version comprises interactive activities including video and audio for students to work on in their own time and at their own pace. (Available as Anonymous Access licence) 2. The Classroom version additionally includes teachers notes and downloadable worksheets. (Available as Learner Tracking licence)

Content provided by:

Access UK is aimed specifically at the experience of students in higher education, and is therefore also useful in preparing students who are in their final year at school or who are doing pre-sessional courses at language schools. Please contact Clarity to trial this program with your students.

Learners find it extremely useful to practise pronunciation as a self-study activity. They can repeat activities as many times as they like, and can make mistakes without embarrassment. And in class, an ICT resource provides a teacher both with consistent pronunciation models, and with interactive activities to keep all students focused, and to keep interest levels high. So, what will they learn in Clear Pronunciation 1 (Sounds)? This program helps learners recognise and pronounce the sounds of English. It covers 43 phonemes: vowels, consonants and diphthongs. Students learn by watching videos (there are more than 50), through working with audio clips (there are over 1,000) and through recording and listening to their own voice, using the integrated Clarity Recorder. Each of the 25 units in the program contrasts two sounds, for example head/had,

there/dare, hair/hear. The activities present each sound independently, in the context of individual words (in initial, middle and final position), in sentences and in discrimination activities. Learners then meet the target sounds in a real-world context. They might listen to someone describing a photograph, a child singing a nursery rhyme or the repeated vowel sounds in movie titles (for example the diphthong in Trading Places and Snakes on a Plane). The final activity is a randomised IPA test where learners refine and test their knowledge of phonemic symbols. This enables them to use phonemic transcriptions in dictionaries a vital skill. Clear Pronunciation 1 is the ideal tool for enabling your learners to master the phonemes of English, helping them to speak clearly and with confidence. A teacher explains the IPA. Students listen and repeat.

The integrated Clarity Recorder enables students to record, play back and save.

So, how does it work? First, a teacher clearly explains and illustrates each topic in a video. Learners then listen to audio clips, identify the target pronunciation feature and practise repeating it. Most teachers love reading, but it can be a challenge to generate the same enthusiasm in our students. This is exactly what Clarity's Active Reading sets out to achieve. The starting point is to present texts which are relevant, stimulating and lively. Topics range from advertisements for diets to Internet posts on wireless gaming to ecotourism. Text types include newspaper and magazine articles, emails, poems, recipes, stories and press releases. Theres lots of variety, and topics to appeal to every learner. The program focuses on the complete range of reading skills and subskills, from skimming and scanning to topic sentences, prediction and inference. It also helps learners develop their vocab strategies and, vitally, it encourages them to develop the reading habit. For a list of reading skills covered, see below. Active Reading intelligently integrates reading with other skills. A text on fashion

leads on to an activity where learners create their own advertisement for a watch; a unit on recipes takes students online to research recipes from different countries. This means speaking and writing are key ingredients in each unit. And learners can listen to a range of native speakers reading the texts, helping them to identify sense groups and develop their chunking skills. The program comes at six levels from Elementary to Advanced, with ten units in each level. Each unit starts with a video introduction, moves through controlled practice and comprehension exercises and concludes with a freer activity which expands on the topic. Active Reading can be used for classwork, homework or self-access. The program integrates with Results Manager enabling teachers to track student progress and generate reports. Help your students learn to love reading with Active Reading!
David Bunting for Schoolzone
