“St. Francis Xavier, a welcoming faith community lovingly sharing the gifts of God.”

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

TH
DECEMBER 14 , 2008
THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL
“A special year will be dedicated for the Bimillennium Celebrations of the Birth of the
Apostle Paul. This Pauline Year will run from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009” Pope Benedict XVI

We will celebrate this Pauline Year with a Parish Mission during Lent. It will be
facilitated by Father Rick Walsh – a member of the Paulist Community in Toronto.

After his “conversion”, on the way to Damascus, Paul traveled throughout parts of Asia Minor (currently Turkey), Syria, and
Arabia (now Jordan), all the way to Jerusalem, before reaching Europe, Greece and ultimately Rome. One can reasonably date
his journeys back to around 50 A.D. or so.
First Journey
From Antioch to Cyprus and to the south of Anatoly (Perge, Antioch of Psidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe), Paul and Barnabas
preached with ardor in the synagogues the Good News of the Resurrection and salvation of Jesus, establishing some communities
there. When the Jews distanced themselves from him, Paul then turned his preaching towards the Gentiles.
(continued next week)

TEN WAYS TO GET MORE OUT OF ADVENT (continued from last week)
6) Pray for patience: If you find yourself becoming anxious or upset, ask the Lord for the gift of patience. Then make
a conscious effort to be a more patient person.
7) Get rid of grudges: Use Advent as an opportunity to let go of any anger or resentment that you might be holding onto.
8) Do something nice for someone every day: It might be an encouraging word, a phone call, a note of appreciation or a
little act of kindness.
9) Offer up: something painful or difficult in your life. The best way to transform trials and tensions is to turn them into a
prayer.
10) Think about: the special gifts and talents God has given you. How are you using these gifts?

NOEL, Come and join our Christmas choir. We will have practices on December 20th at 3:00 p.m. An
SING NOEL,
additional time will be announced before the Christmas Eve services. We look forward to seeing you.

“CHORRILLOS CHILD FEEDING PROJECT IN PERU“: A report has been prepared outlining the
progress of the child feeding program in Lima, Peru, which the people of the Diocese of Pembroke
are committed to supporting. As we enter into our 3rd year of funding, we would ask for your prayers
and continued commitment and support for this very worthwhile project. Please pick up a copy of
the report, available at the entrances of the church.
