Lindsey Crisp Final Proposal April, 9th 2012 Carrying Cartagena The search for love is one of the

greatest aspects that defines the human species. This journey which crosses over from self love to love for others brings a sense of connection to the world. Tell the story of one persons journey to love and you have told the whole worlds journey to love. This very journey of love and self discovery will become the theme for the novel Carrying Cartagena. It is the main character Jamily Knight who Carrying Cartagena follows. Jamily is a 25 year old white American who has recently become fed up with her current surrounding in the United States. After a string of love gone wrong experiences she decides to move to Cartagena Colombia for the summer. The decision to leave the United States was based on the human reaction of fight or flight which is invoked in difficult situations. In this instance Jamily chooses flight. It is almost certain that at one point in their life every human will experience the sensation of running from something. This is where the reader first relates with the humanness of Jamily. As the story continues the reader will be able to relate on a deeper level with the main character. It is this connection which will be cultivated throughout the story which will leave the reader feeling a deeper understanding of their own selfs. Although the novel will be set in present day it will parallel the historically rich past of the Colombian port city of Cartagena. The city itself which was originally

founded in 1533 experienced many attacks, raids and damage during colonial times. It was the years of attacks and pirate raids which caused the citys leaders to employ one of the best know architects at the time to build a fortress wall around the entire city. These walls have since then protected the city, but have also kept everything within the fortress unchanged by time. The history of Cartagena will be told in segments throughout the novel and will become a parallel of Jamilys own journey to self discovery. Throughout this comparison the reader will be able to see where Jamily has built walls up in her own life, where she has been left unchanged, and who she is willing to let in. In this way Jamily carrys Cartagena around with her. Through the theme of carrying, the reader will be able to see what emotional baggage Jamily has brought with her to Cartagena. Although she choose to run from her problems it is part of the human curse to never truly be able to detach from our emotions and leave thoughts behind. Because she still has the emotional baggage of a less than healthy relationship with her mother, her many failed boyfriend attempts and a bruised self confidence Jamily will have to work through these emotions in the city which will provide her the perfect setting to do so. While in the city Jamily will encounter situations outside of her comfort zone. These situations which include not speaking the native language of the area, not knowing anyone, and feeling alone are the moments which will cause Jamily to grow the most as a person. It is in the discomfort that Jamily will learn to grow. As her walls come down Jamily will be able to connect more with the world around her. After a two months in the city she will meet a man named Nico. It is important to understand that

It might sound better if you were to replace it with a word or phrase of similar meaning so it doesnt seem like its being overused. ifeanyi umeugo 4/9/12 10:07 AM Comment [7]: What is your marketing approach. How do you plan on marketing this novel to your audience. ifeanyi umeugo 4/9/12 10:04 AM Comment [5]: Based on the content of your novel who is your intended target audience. This needs to be stated.

the love that grows between Jamily and the Nico is not the main story of this novel but instead a conclusion that is given to the main character once she has done the self healing, discovery and growth a human most do before they can fully love another. The novel Carrying Cartagena is the story of one humans path to growth. Although each humans path may looks different the same set of emotions will be experienced by all. It is this understanding of emotions that will connect the reader to Jamily and her story. It is this desire for connection which will be the motivation for thousands to read this story. It is my hope as the author that after reading this novel the reader will be able to feel more connected to themselves and to the world around them.
ifeanyi umeugo 4/9/12 10:19 AM Comment [8]: The conclusion seems to be a restatement of your intro paragraph. It summarizes everything you stated above. Look for a new approach in closing your paper. ifeanyi umeugo 4/9/12 10:15 AM Comment [9]: Review the MLA format your paper is missing headers and a page number on each page.
