Explain the functions of each part of a DC generator with neat sketches. The following data pertain to the magnetization curve of a D.C. shunt generator at 1500 r.p.m. 1.60 2.00 2.40 2.80 3.00 f in Amps 0 0.4 0.8 1.20 E G in Volts 6 60 120 172.5 202.5 221 231 237 240 For this generator, obtain: (i) The voltage on open circuit to which the machine will build up e.m.f. for a total shunt resistance of 100. (ii) The critical value of the shunt field resistance at 1500 r.p.m. (iii) The magnetization curves at 1200 r.p.m. therefore the open circuit voltage for a field resistance of 100. Explain various power stages in a D.C. motor. What will happen if a D.C. series motor is started without connecting load to it? A 4 pole, 500V, shunt motor has a total of 720 armature conductors which are wave wound. The full-load armature current is 60 A, and the flux per pole is 0.03 Wb. The armature resistance is 0.2. The voltage drop across a brush is 1 Volt. Calculate the full-load speed of the motor. Derive the e.m.f. equation of a single-phase transformer and draw the phasor diagram under no-load condition. A 40 kVA transformer with ratio of 2000 / 250 V has a primary resistance of 1.15 and a secondary resistance of 0.0155. Calculate. (i) The total resistance in terms of secondary winding, (ii) The total resistance drop on full load, and (iii) The total copper loss on full load. Obtain an expression for the regulation of a single-phase transformer, from its equivalent circuit / phasor diagram. A 250/500 V transformer gave the following test results. O.C. test(L.V. side): 250 V 1 A 80 W S.C. test (H.V. side): 20 V 12 A 100 W Calculate the efficiency when the output is 10A, 500V and 0.8 power factor lagging. Contd. in Page 2 Page 1 of 2

Show that when a 3-phase supply is given to the stator winding of induction motor, it produces a rotating magnetic field of constant magnitude and rotating at synchronous speed. A 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has a full-load speed of 1440 r.p.m. For this motor, calculate the following (i) number of poles (ii) full-load slip and rotor frequency (iii) Speed of stator field with respect to stator structure and rotor structure and (iv) Speed of rotor field with respect to rotor to rotor structure, stator structure and stator field. Explain the tests to be conducted for determining synchronous impedance. A 100 KVA, 6.6 KV, 3-phase star connected synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 25/ phase. It supplies full load current at 0.75 p.f lagging and rated terminal voltage. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation when the generator supplies full load current at 0.8 p.f leading. Explain the working principle of the synchronous motor on no load and on load with the help of phasor diagrams. A 3 phase, 440 V, 50 Hz star connected synchronous motor develops 7.4 kW. The effective resistance per phase of the stator winding is 0.5 ohm. The motor operates at power factor of 0.75 lagging. Iron and mechanical losses amount to 500 W and the excitation loss is 650 W. Calculate (i) armature current (ii) efficiency of the motor. Describe the construction and working principle of shaded pole induction motor. Discuss the function of an ac tachometer. Explain its construction and operations.
