Overview:Theprimaryobjectiveoftheclasswillbetodevelopamathematicalmodelofaconcentratingsolarpower(CSP) systemusingparabolictroughcollectors(PTC)todriveanOrganicRankineCycle(ORC)similartothesystematMETUNCC. Themathematicalmodelwillbedevelopedthroughaseriesofprojectsusingacomputer.Studentswillusethemodeltorun simulationsandperformparametricstudiestopredicttheperformanceofthesystem.Studentswillwriteformalreportsfor eachproject.Asadesignclassyoucanexpecttospendsignificanttimeworkingonprojectsoutsideofclass.Takingthisclass inconjunctionwithME407isnotrecommended. GroupWork:Theearlyprojectswillbeindividualwhilethelaterprojectswillbegroup.Groupswillbeassignedandstudents withsimilarperformanceonindividualassignmentswillbegroupedtogether(i.e.,weakstudentswillbegroupedwithother weakstudents).Underperformingstudentsmaybeplacedinanindividualgroupsotheydonotimpacttheperformanceof otherstudents.Thereforeifyouwanttobeplacedinagoodgroupyouneedtodowellontheearlyassignments. Text: This class will focus on integrating and applying students existing knowledge from lower division classes tomodel a fairlycomplexenergyconversionsystem.Nospecifictextbookwillbeusedbutratherstudentsareexpectedtorefertotheir textbooksfromtheirThermodynamicsandHeatTransfercoursesandusethecoursenotes. Homework:Idonotplantogiveanytraditionalhomeworkproblems. Presentation:Eachstudentwillgivea~5minuteindividualpresentationnominallygradedonascaleof10asfollows:10/10 if best presentation in the class; 7/10 if average presentation; 5/10 fulfill minimum requirements; 5/10 (not 0/10) if no presentationgiven.

Exams:Therewillbe2Midterms(MTs).Approximately50%oftheMTswilltestmaterialfromtheprojects. QuizzesandFinal:Idonotplantogiveanypopquizzesorafinalexam. Attendance:Attendanceisveryimportantforthisclassandyouareexpectedtoattendallclassesunlessyouhaveanexcuse signedbythedepartmentsecretary.Ingeneralmyleveloftrustinastudentisproportionaltotheirattendance.Iamnot receptivetospecialrequestsfromstudentswithpoorattendance. Peer Evaluation: For all group work assignments, your peers in your group will evaluate your performance and this evaluationcanimpactyourfinalgradeaswellaswhoyouworkwithinfuturegroupassignments. *IdopilegradingforprojectreportsandsomeMTquestions.PilegradingmeansIbrieflyskimthroughandsortallreports into~5piles,withthebestreportsintherightpileandtheweakestreportsintheleftpile.Ithendomoredetailedgrading withingeneralthereportsintherightpilereceivingthehighestgradeandthereportsintheleftpilereceivingthelowest grades.Thereforereportsaregradedrelativetootherreportsofsimilarquality.Studentswhoquestionwhytheyreceiveda lowgrademayreceiveafrustratinganswerlikeThereisnothingfundamentallywrongwithyourreport,butotherreports were justbetter. Reportscan receive a low grade dueto fundamental conceptualproblems, an inabilitytocommunicate ideasandresultseffectively,oraninabilityformetoappreciatethesignificanceofyourworkduetomylimitedintelligence (a common problem for misunderstood geniuses). Misunderstood geniuses are encouraged to commercialize their work, submittheirworktoanacademicjournal,orpursueotheravenuestovalidatethesignificanceoftheirideasandmylimited intelligence,whichtheycanthenturnintoastorytoinspireothermisunderstoodgeniuses. Yourcoursegradecanbemodifiedasfollows: Penalties:Studentswhocontributelessthanaveragetogroupassignments(slackersorfreeriders)canhavetheir gradeforgroupassignmentsreducedbasedontheirpeerevaluationgrade,includingreceivingazeroiftheydonot contributeanythingtotheproject. BonusPoints:Studentswhocontributemorethanaveragetogroupassignmentsmayreceivebonuspoints,especially iftheyareworkingwithidentifiedslackers(freeriders).However,thesebonuspointsarehardtoearnandIexpectto awardthesebonuspointsto0to2selectstudents.
