he Butler County Chamber and the Butler County Master Gardeners are joining forces once again to host the 2012 Spring Garden Market & Home Show on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The committee has relocated the show to Alameda Park this year, to provide additional space for vendors and attendees. The facility will be transformed into a showcase of exhibitors geared to helping you welcome spring! Close to 80 local and regional businesses and organizations have already signed on to offer items and ideas for your home and business including home improvement and landscaping, financial planning, personal care, and more. Sponsored by Eisler Landscapes and Kenmac Rentals & Sales, (additional sponsors Friedmans Freshmarkets, ARMSTRONG, C.W.Howard Insurance Agency) the event is from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Visitors will be treated to specialty food items, crafts, landscaping materials, live plants and more available for purchase throughout the day. First aid station will be manned by VNA, Western PA, childrens activities sponsored by Newhaven Court at Clearview will be provided by Butler County Childrens Center, 4-H volunteers will assist with purchases throughout the day, Baglier Mazda has donated transportation for workers. Butler Media Group will be sending Kathy Gregory Steiner, Coffee with Kate to our event with a live remote that you will not want to miss. Butler County Parks and Recreation has been working hard to make sure the facility is in top shape for the Market. Space options are limited but are still available to vendors. Registration forms are available at ButlerCountyChamber.com. Shuttle service will be available courtesy of Alliance for Non profit Resources and Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau from the Friedmans Freshmarkets parking lot at Pointe Plaza. This years Leadership Butler County class will be manning a Stuff the Bus station to collect new and gently used shoes and clothing for their chosen agency First Impressions and class project. Visitors to the Garden Market are encouraged to bring donations which will then be distributed by the class to those in need. First Impressions serves the children of our community by providing shoes and new or gently used clothing at no cost to families in need. There are many kids in our area whose families cannot afford these basic items. Families can receive up to three outfits per child per month including shoes and undergarments. Get ready to kick off spring with the Butler County Chamber and the Master Gardeners and mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19!

t seems to be the season for showing appreciation for good work, as we have honored employees from the Butler Eagle (Alice Lunn) and Butler County Community College (Lexie Jones) as the Butler County Employees of the Year during our Employee Appreciation Luncheon. We will also soon be honoring two Butler County Citizens with the Distinguished Service Award. The Junior Award Recipient is well deserving and community involved Tom Panei. David Tack, an overachieving volunteer who is active in numerous community projects and a generous philanthropist, will be honored as Senior Recipient. June will see 24 business leaders from the Four Corners of Butler County recognized for completing this years Leadership Butler County program session, as we combine their graduation with the United Way of Butler Countys Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition. During this program, we will also partner with ARMSTRONG in announcing the 2012 Red Apple award winners for excellence in education at all levels. In July we will recognize the Butler Little Theatre as a Chamber Community Champion for collective organization achievement. During our Celebrate Business Annual Dinner in September, we honor a Chamber Business Champion as well as the recipient of the William A. Morgan Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The high number of nominees in each of the above contests is a very optimistic indication of the high level of involvement in both the work and volunteer environments. Our Chamber is evidence of this trend towards working together for a common goal. So far this year we have educated, rewarded, networked, mixed, dined, lunched, open-housed, ribbon-cut, affiliated and coordinated numerous times involving thousands of business people. Our committees have become so well chaired that their operations not only reflect, but also enhance our image in the business community. New ideas and new projects are constantly being discussed, implemented and fine-tuned. To me, it is obvious that together we do these things not necessarily for the Award which might be involved, but more commonly for the Reward we receive from our actions. The Butler County Chamber of Commerce has been the proud recipient of these rewards since it was founded in 1896. However, it has become increasingly important during the past few years as other venues have seen a decline in involvement. Once again we realize that we have one of the strongest and most involved memberships of any organization in Butler County. While other events remain stagnant and unattended, we reach capacity crowds consistently and enthusiastically. While sponsorships for a variety of venues are declining, ours remain consistent. As we offer support and collaboration to numerous organizations and activities such as the Spring Garden Market and the second annual Bantam Jeep Festival this summer, I remind our business members that we are indeed seen as the lead agency either in establishing and conducting events, or in serving as partners and support services for a wide variety of community activities. For this I must once again thank the membership of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. Without you, we cease to exist. Without your support, we stop growing. Without your involvement, we remain at a standstill. The Board of Directors and Officers thank you for your faith in our organization and your creative ideas and support.

VA Butler Healthcare Walk & Roll SRU Womens Golf Outing scheduled for June 15

ou are invited to attend the second annual VA2K Walk & Roll Event on Wednesday May 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at VA Butler Healthcare, Butler, PA. VA facilities across the Nation are holding VA2K walk and roll events for wellness and in support of homeless Veterans. Last years national VA2K events were hugely successful. A total of 16,847 employees, Veterans, volunteers, and community members donated over 25,935 items for homeless Veterans valued at approximately $172,000. Community members are invited to join in. There is no registration fee, but participants are asked to donate an item for a homeless Veteran (see wish list below). Registration for the VA Butler 2K starts at 10:30 am in the Auditorium on Wednesday May 16, and the event begins at 11:00 am outside the main entrance. Pre-registration is highly encouraged. In the event of inclement weather, the VA2K will be held inside VA Butlers Auditorium. lippery Rock University officials have scheduled the 17th Annual Womens Athletics Golf Outing for Friday, June 15 at Pine Grove Golf Course in Grove City. The four-person scramble event will feature a noon shotgun start. The day will culminate with dinner and the awards presentation at approximately 5 p.m. Held in conjunction with the golf competition will be a putting contest as well as numerous hole contests and prize raffles. Cost of the event is $340 per foursome prior to June 1 and $400 per foursome after June 1. Individual golfers may register for $85 prior to June 1 and $100 after June 1. ock PRoductions is Slippery Rock Universitys premier student-run public relations firm. As a part of Rock PRoductions, students have the opportunity to gain professional experience and complete actual public relations work before they graduate. Rock PRoductions is a part of Slippery Rock Universitys Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Rock PRoductions will be assisting the Butler County Chamber of Commerce with three upcoming events: the 56th Annual Golf Outing in June, a B2B Expo in July, and the 18th Annual Ladies Golf Outing in August. The Class is organizing a Fashion Show and Luncheon to help support this project, which will be held on Sunday, May 20th, at 2 p.m. at The Atrium in Butler. Grove City Premium Outlets will be providing the fashions for both ladies and children. The fashions will be modeled by Marilyn Kane Modeling School. There will be a basket auction and wine auction at the event to help raise additional funds. Music will be provided by Wedding Solutions, LLC and desserts courtesy of the Butler Country Club. An old-time rural hub as down-to-earth as its most famous productthe Jeep. Mines and factories come to mind when people think about western Pennsylvania, but forests and farms stretch across the state, punctuated by small towns like the seat of Butler County north of Pittsburgh in the Allegheny River watershed. Butler (pop. 13,800) is an American classic that grew up along a trail blazed by George Washington, sent in 1753 to discourage French settlement along the frontier. Farmers followed, giving the region its country character and prized hand-built barns. The town serves as a business and cultural hub, with its own baseball team, thriving downtown, community symphony, theater and barbershop chorus. The Maridon Museum, founded by local philanthropist Mary Hulton Phillips, houses an excellent collection of Asian art, and the Butler County Historical Society maintains an old settlers cabin, schoolhouse and the landmark 1828 Lowrie Shaw House. Butler owes its star on the map to the Jeep, invented just before World War II at the towns American Bantam Car Company and still celebrated in August at the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival.

2012 Butler County Employee of the Year

hen the Butler Eagle (the minnow) decided to swallow (the Whale) the Erie PA Times News daily and Sunday newspaper, they knew it would require a major team effort. One task was to attract, recruit, hire, train and supervise 40 new employees. Many would be working steady nights and the process began during the busiest season in the industry, the fall. Alice Lunn rose to the occasion, and as Circulation Director she managed to get the job done and running smoothly and efficiently. During her 25 year career with the Butler Eagle, she had gone from the mailroom to the management team, supervising nearly 100 employees plus contract haulers and independent contractors. The Chamber congratulates this true selfmade manager as Employee of the Year. It is sometimes difficult to remain diplomatic and professional while retaining initiative and motivation to accomplish assigned tasks while thinking of new and

exciting ideas. Alexandria (Lexie) Jones has gone above and beyond these qualities to facilitate student / tutor needs within the tutoring program, making it the best it can be. Without Lexie, the tutoring center would not be what it is today a robust, energetic meeting place for tutors to meet the needs of Butler County Community College students. She is truly the ideal role model for her students, mentor for her tutors and supervisor for her employees. Congratulations on being selected as Employee of the Year.
