Ebenezer
Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us" - 1 Samuel 7:12.
We did not get here without help. Sometimes we have needed a reminder. It could have been Samuels stone to commemorate the victory over the Philistines, Joshuas twelve stones from the Jordan River to commemorate the crossing, or any of the other monuments that were established over time. They all held something in common. They were reminders that great achievements are not solo acts of personal power. So, we are reminded that we are here only through the grace and help of God. An Ebenezer is literally a stone of help that acts as a personal reminder of help that has brought us as far as we have gotten. We may speak of being self-made. The reality is that no one is. Whether we are blessed with loving and involved parents, or were raised by a pack of wolves, we have been influenced, challenged, and even aided by the elements around us. There have been family members, teachers, coaches, friends, and coworkers who have sought to be of assistance to us. Sometimes even total strangers have done things that blessed us and gave us opportunities Raise your stone. Raise your stone and remember. We need to do more than just admit that we have not built our lives alone. We need to see clearly things that have been done. We need to count our blessings and know what they are. Then we will know that God has been with us, provided for us, and aided us to be where we are. So we sing Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help Ive come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Russ
