Title of Unit: 4th Grade Economics Title of Lesson: Resources and Economy

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is an introductory lesson for fourth grade students about where our natural resources and how the economy has an impact on the world we live in. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Teachers Edition (pages 142-145). 2. Target Population: 4th Grade This lesson is designed for all learning levels Whole Group, Partners

3. Objectives:

E10.4.4 Define productive resources. E9.4.2A Identify reasons why consumers choose to buy more or less of a good or service, based on
prices or current economic situations.

4. Procedure: 1. Get Set to Read on page 142 -Preview the text by reading the heading of the lesson -Categorize the types of resources of students -Discuss how the products mentioned are part of a regions economy 2. Introduce vocabulary -dam, producer, consumer, scarcity, opportunity cost. 3. Read pages 142-145 -Ask questions like: -How has our economy changed over time? -In what way does scarcity affect our prices? -What are some ways people can use natural resources to earn a living? 4. Write Lyrics on page 144 -Have students work in pairs to create a song about how people use natural resources to produce goods and services. Write examples of things that the students can use in their songs on the board (examples: peanut butter, colored paper, cotton pajamas, pecan pie). Students will then share their songs in small groups. 5. Assessment:

Students will be assessed based on the depth of their songs. They will need to show that they have an understanding of what natural resources are and why they are important. 6. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? -They need to pay attention to the reading part of the lesson to understand what the vocabulary means.

How will you follow up or extend this lesson? -I could follow up with this lesson by having students write a persuasive letter to their parents explaining why they should get a new toy or object based on its opportunity cost.

What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? -I would have the students make a chart and write down what each natural resource is and why it is used.

Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? -Students might get off task during the lyric writing part of the assignment
