Title of Unit: The Three Branches of Government Title of Lesson: Rules debates Lesson Plans Day 4

Summary of the Lesson Plan In this lesson students will be debating on rules they made and deciding if they will become laws or not. They will function like the real branches of government. The website: http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=155917 Target Population: grade level: 4th grade skill level: At grade level grouping: Whole group, small group Objectives: C14.4.5 Name the three branches of state government. Procedure: 1) Show the School House Rock 3 Branches of Government video again for review. It is on Teachertube.com. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=155917 2) Discuss what each group will be doing when they receive their rules. 3) Have students get into the groups you put them in yesterday. 4) Give each group a set of rules they created yesterday that pertain to their branches of government. 5) Let them know they will be functioning like a real government would work. They will decide whether to pass the rule and send it to the appropriate branch from there or kill the rule. 6) The president and his cabinet will read the rules that come to him and will decide whether to veto the rules or not. 7) The judicial branch will make rulings on rules that seem unconstitutional. 8) Wonder around the room helping each group perform their perspective roles. 9) About ten minutes before the end of the lesson have groups stop where they are and discuss how each branch functioned. Compare to the government. Did they function like they should or not? Why? Assessment: Teacher observation Reflection: What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? Debating skills and communication skills. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will have students write about each branch of government and how it functioned. What can you do for students who don't grasp the concepts? I will make sure the branches of government are grouped with high, medium and low level students. Where do yo anticipate having problems with this lesson?

The students getting loud and confrontational with the rules. I will have to monitor them and make sure everyone is able to have a voice. Materials: Computers Paper slips with the rules written on them. Pencils to write pass, kill or veto.
