We love Carrie Bradshaw, but few fashionistas can actually pull off her wardrobe. Thankfully, Lloyd Boston has released a guide that every woman can and should live by. By Deena Campbell
Simplify your look and commit to building a closet with staying power is the kind of practical fashion advice that has made style expert Lloyd Boston a popular guest on The Oprah Show, Today, and the E! networks The Look for Less. As the host of his own show, HGTVs Closet Cases, Boston helps women in cities across the country increase their fashion IQ. Now, hes spreading his gospel even further this fall with his fourth tome, The Style Checklist: The Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials for You (Atria Books). The book, which highlights the 100 pieces that every woman should own, offers a foolproof plan for even the most fashion-challenged. When you invest in any of the items in the checklist, youll be able to wear them decades later, says Boston, who has a penchant for classics with a hint of fun. This comes as little surprise, considering that Boston was a protg of Tommy Hilger. When the two met during a Hilger appearance at a mall in 1989, the designer offered him an internship on the spot and actually paid for his last year of college. Boston spent 10 years at the company, leaving as vice president of art direction and having made a lifelong mentor and friend. Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, and John Varvatos are a few of Bostons other favorite retailers who provide classic American designs with modern touches. I love neutrals with pops of color, he says. When you understand the power that comes with restraint, your image becomes chic and sophisticated. Its hard to argue with that.
