Lloyds 10 Favorite Finishing Touches for Women

1. The polished wallet. Having a beat-up, worn-out wallet is the equivalent of having a messy home. A sharp one (like one of these from Tiffany & Co.) is not only the mark of a lady but of a woman who means business. 2. The metallic cuff. At any runway show in any season, youll always see some type of bold metallic cuff. Its perfect if youre wearing a dress that has a lot going on and you dont want to do a lot on your wrist. 3. Modern pearls. So many options exist now compared with 20 years ago, so whether you have genuine or faux pearls, make them your own. 4. The epic chandelier earring. Its size is what makes it interesting. 5. The long lightweight scarf. French women do this better than anyone, but American women are slowly catching up. Think of the scarf as punctuationit doesnt necessarily have to connect with anything else. 6. The wide belt. We saw it in the 1940s, again in the 70s, and even a redo in the 80s. Now women can get it at any price point. 7. Knee boots. They give a certain strength you need when its time to walk into an event or lead a meeting on your feet. 8. The cocktail ring. It has an air of sexiness and independence, and just when you think its big enough, go one size larger. 9. The ladylike evening coat. If women knew how terrible it looks to wear their nine-to-ve work coat over a beautiful cocktail dress, they would run to get an elegant evening coat. 10. The weekend bag. I got my rst one when I was 27, and Ive been collecting them ever since. A good bag (like this Goyard dufe) will make you feel as if youre going somewhere exotic, even if youre not.

Style Meets Sensibility

We love Carrie Bradshaw, but few fashionistas can actually pull off her wardrobe. Thankfully, Lloyd Boston has released a guide that every woman can and should live by. By Deena Campbell

Simplify your look and commit to building a closet with staying power is the kind of practical fashion advice that has made style expert Lloyd Boston a popular guest on The Oprah Show, Today, and the E! networks The Look for Less. As the host of his own show, HGTVs Closet Cases, Boston helps women in cities across the country increase their fashion IQ. Now, hes spreading his gospel even further this fall with his fourth tome, The Style Checklist: The Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials for You (Atria Books). The book, which highlights the 100 pieces that every woman should own, offers a foolproof plan for even the most fashion-challenged. When you invest in any of the items in the checklist, youll be able to wear them decades later, says Boston, who has a penchant for classics with a hint of fun. This comes as little surprise, considering that Boston was a protg of Tommy Hilger. When the two met during a Hilger appearance at a mall in 1989, the designer offered him an internship on the spot and actually paid for his last year of college. Boston spent 10 years at the company, leaving as vice president of art direction and having made a lifelong mentor and friend. Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, and John Varvatos are a few of Bostons other favorite retailers who provide classic American designs with modern touches. I love neutrals with pops of color, he says. When you understand the power that comes with restraint, your image becomes chic and sophisticated. Its hard to argue with that.

Five Items Lloyd Cant Live Without

Stubbs & Wootton black velvet slippers. Theyre my neutral shoes. They can be worn as indoor slippers, but you can even wear them with a tuxedo. Eredi Pisan white dress shirts. The white shirt is great for guys who cant put things together. With Pisan, a tie is unnecessary. MacBook Pro and an iPhone. Because my background is in art direction, I was a Mac junkie long before Mac became popular. I wrote most of my book on my MacBook Pro. J. Crew white jeans. Sometimes I want the comfort of jeans, but not the indigo denim kind. With white jeans, I can add a blazer if I want to dress them up. Laura Mercier Lip Silk. Its not shiny. I dont like shiny lips on guysI dont think girls do either. It also lasts for a long time. It doesnt have drying agents; put it on at night, and your lips will still feel moist in the morning.
