At IPEX, a print show in Birmingham UK, Frank Romano spoke about the future of print as just one part of communications. I know this because Kodak recorded a video and put it online. Kodak supported video to the extent of giving away cameras at their press conference. They see Social Media as important and cameras as a large part of this. Previously Andrew Tribute has contributed to a text blog for Xerox In the Balance or what They Think or even for Attributes. At this IPEX he did a series of interviews as video for WhatTheyThink. This link is to his final conclusions. I discovered at IPEX is that What They Think is only online. Previously I imagined there was a hard copy version published in the USA. Printspeak have a range of video online including a guide to FujiFilm XMF workflow. Some video is also on YouTube, for example a presentation from Ricoh.

Oce TV have the basis of a studio on the stand. There is space for an audience and some large screens to expand the pictures. They post everything to YouTube including this interview with Andy Tribute. It may be surprising that he thinks this is an Inkjet IPEX, not the social video IPEX. But he explains that more of his journalism is on video. Oce TV have uploaded 46 videos from IPEX to YouTube so far, including an interview with show director Trevor Crawford.

There is a lot more to come. YouTube has a lot of choices from other sources if you start with the links above. Canon has a policy on social media but I have yet to find the video. Perhaps by the time of drupa they will become followers of Kodak and give away some cameras to the bloggers. I will be loading more of my own video soon, even the low quality ones as I was learning how to use the Kodak Zi8. At the opening ceremony it was explained to me that there is a choice of focus. It took till day two to realise there is a zoom. But clearly social video can only get better. The Twitter feed on IPEX has been getting stronger but I am not sure the #Tweetpex meeting on Saturday was as well supported as it might have been. There have been Several Tweets about having missed it or not being sure where the Wetherspoons was. However there is an interest in social media and this may develop into real events later. Several companies have posted video directly to YouTube. Kodak edit short versions of the video on their main site and post as KodakB2B. Hewlett Packard post as HPGraphicArts. They include a report on the IPEX opening ceremony and a speech by Benny Landa. Xerox posts as XeroxCorp and managed to wrap up in just over a minute. I could not find a channel for Heidelberg but there is a video from Beyond Print on the Web to Print partnerships. Bernd Zipper spoke about web To Print at the drupa Innovation Parc a couple of years ago. My only problem with video is that there is no online translation as there is with text, even if this is approximate. Almost all the Beyond Print video on YouTube is in German. Searching on IPEX finds a variety of languages so eventually even people in the UK may pick up enough words to at least try another search. Printweek has reported Some 135 countries were represented and around 48% of the 50,000-plus attendees came from outside the UK ? an 8% increase on the 2006 event. In addition, there were more than 20,000 exhibitor staff present, including manufacturers, distributors, agents and OEM partners, as well as 500 international media personnel. According to IIR, Ipex is "more international" than any other business-to-business event in the UK.

Printweek are also including video in their media mix. Matt Whip was part of the panel for a discussion in the Kodak K Zone about social media. The Printweek website has expanded a section for discussion and comments on blogs. The blogs often relate to stories that also appear in print. There was not as much space for a studio on the Printweek stand. They did have to fit in an editorial office and production for the IPEX daily. But there are several videos on the website including a guide to how the IPEX Daily was produced. There could be more video in future.

Lord Heseltine visits drupa stand 2010 IPEX / Steve Burden

Lord Heseltine recently retired from Haymarket, publishers of Printweek but attended IPEX to receive the Print Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award. As reported on the Kodak Grow Your Biz blog he remarked The evolution of the printing industry over the past 50 or more years has been extraordinary. I have been privileged to play a part in the industry and advocate for the power of print in both business and personal life. Together with the growing popularity of digital media today, print remains a uniquely personal and tactile experience for many, one that no doubt will be an important part of generations to come.
