Summary of the Lesson Plan:

This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family (p. 96-101).

Target Population:

Objectives:

1st grade students at all learning levels Whole group, small group and independent practice

G8.1.1 Tell how the physical environment affects activity at school, i.e., inside/outside recess.
Procedure:

1. Refer to notes on TE p. 96 Get Set to Read Students will look at the pictures on pg. 96 and answer the question What do these pictures and words tell about? Students will fill in Reading Skill: Cause and Effect graphic organizer page (Unit Resources p. 26) showing how changing seasons cause changes in temperature and the amount of water in the air, which affects what people wear. Students will build on background knowledge by being asked the following question: What kind of day is it outside today? Introduce vocabulary (weather, season)

2. As we read pg. 96-99 as a class, we will pause as I ask some of the questions given in the talk about it section on pg. 96-98 -What is weather? -What are two kinds of weather? -Can it snow when it is hot? -What is a season? What are the names of the four seasons? 3. After reading and answering questions as a class, students will work on their Vocabulary/Study Guide (Unit Resources workbook p. 27) with teacher assistance when needed.

Where We Live Weather and Seasons

Lesson Plan # 4 out of 5

Assessment: Students will record the weather outside for a month and record their findings on their very own weather graph. Students will take turns being the weather forecaster, broadcasting daily weather reports. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? Students need to be able to understand basic weather words like sunny, cloudy, windy etc How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will use the extended lesson 4 section of the TE P. 100-101 which will describe to students how people in the past knew what the weather would be and how people predict weather today. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would use the Reteach Minilesson graphic organizer on pg. 99 to help students who arent grasping the concepts.

Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson?

I dont anticipate having problems with this lesson because students have some sort of background knowledge on weather
