In my final year, I was part of a group to do a group project for Business & management module. The task was to come up with a product or service area for a company. I came up with the idea of a double sided ereader (all in one academic gadget) and another member came up with Smartphone idea. Group consisted of 5 people, both e-reader & Smartphone idea had support from one member each and one member was neutral. I knew my idea was better as Smartphone market was saturated due to iphone mania but I needed to do some convincing the other members. I did research, came up with basic product description/specification to convince team members. I explained possible opportunities that can be achieved with the e-reader, such as marketing it to academics & its more eco friendly. I also produced SWOT analysis, Marketing mix analysis, product differentiation analysis for the e-reader and even created a sketch of the prototype to convince the members. Once I presented analysis information to the members, discussed & compared to the Smartphone idea, members were convinced that the ereader has more advantages, i.e. in terms of cost effectiveness, easy to promote and market it. This has resulted in all members to continue the project further with the e-reader idea.

I participated as a group leader of a project at university, to design and build an electronic south pointing Chinese chariot. Members of the group consisted of candidates from 3 different departments and no one worked with each other previously.

As a group leader, I identified team member's strengths and delegated tasks accordingly. Exchanged phone numbers, conducted weekly meetings, took notes and minutes, communicated regularly via email, discussed any conflicting issues so that everyone is in sync with the project outcome. It was important to hear from candidates from other departments as they had a role to play in completing the project without which the whole project would fail.

From this project I understood the importance of teamwork. It was important to listen to each others ideas with an open mind and agree to a solution with which everyone agrees. This has benefitted the whole team positively as every one had a say in discussions and all ideas were combined together to complete the project. The outcome of the project was great and appreciated by project supervisor.

My role as head of admin at Unwind Summer School which caters for 100+ kids, required me to organise outer bound trip for the whole school. Every year kids go to exciting trips, however due to shortage of funds, it was difficult to organise a trip which has high cost for transports & activities; using public transport wasn't an option. The coordinator was looking for solutions within the budget and along with fun activities for kids.

I took initiative to research activities within budget; & with little inspiration from Japanese game shows I used to watch, I suggested organising exciting game activities within the area of premises, i.e. hiring inflatable bungee run, laser shooting arena and altogether 8 other activities. I have persuaded the coordinator & teachers with reasons that kids love competitions & the cost will also be within the budget. I even grouped kids into groups, making sure they participate in all 8 activities. My suggestion was accepted & appreciated by everyone.

This lead to a new enthusiasm within the staff and resulted in active involvement in organising the fun event. Kids were surprised; they loved the activities and had immense fun. This also created a buzz within the local community & resulted in saving 200 from the trip budget.
