WCC 2012 activities & events

All delegates are cordially invited to join the opening ceremony taking place on Wednesday, 18 April 2012 from 11:00 in room Sheikh Rashid Hall E. The exhibition will be officially opened immediately after the opening ceremony (at approximately 12:00). A Welcome Reception with finger food and beverage will start at 16:00 in the exhibition hall.

Friday 20 April is Wear Red day: in support of the Go Red for Women campaign, delegates are invited to wear red and participate to the Go Red activities. Delegates wearing something red will receive a special giveaway on the World Heart Federation booth 7F22.

A MERCHANTS TALE: DUBAI CITYS TOUR

A fascinating historical excursion and orientation tour of the city that gives you a great introduction to Dubai as a destination. The tour includes a visit to the Dubai Museum, one of Dubais most important historical monuments. You will get a feel of almost everything that is so fascinating about the Arab world, including Arabian sailing boats, old weapons, pearl diving outfits and an impressive array of military artifacts. You will also cross the Dubai creek in an Abra, a traditional wooden boat. The Abra used to be the main mode of transport between the 2 sides of the creek before cars were able to cross on the two bridges or the Shindaga tunnel. Still today, the Abra provides a quick and economincal way of travel to thousands of people who commute daily to either side of the city - Deira & Bur Dubai. The boat guides you to a historic market the Spice and Gold Souk.

WORLDS VANTAGE POINT OBSERVATORY DECK AT BURJ KHALIFA

CAPITAL ADVENTURE GRAND MOSQUE & EMIRATES PALACE VISIT (Abu Dhabi)

This unique experience takes you on a magnificent journey to the two iconic buildings that give the city of Abu Dhabi its world class image. You will visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for a session on cultural understanding, followed by an orientation tour of the city and end with a visit of the majestic Emirates Palace. The majestic Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque is probably the most imposing religious and national landmark in Abu Dhabi to date. SHARJAH / AJMAN TOUR - CULTURAL TWIN CITIES

The Emirate of Sharjah is 15 minutes away from Dubai. Our journey will start at the Cultural square, Majahrah souk, with its intricate mosaics and golden dome is also a popular spot with the locals. The 150 year old Al Naboodah House allows you to see the original Sharjah settlement and traditional coffee shop where you can try mint tea. We will then pass by the majestic King Faisal Mosque, the Pearl Monument, symbol of the UAE Federation, the fabulous Blue Souk, where there are more than 600 shops that sell carpets, gold, silver, antiques, perfumes, clothes and many other goods. After this, onwards to the Ajman's enchanting museum - housed in an ancient fort it gives intriguing insights into the lifestyle before changes brought by oil.

ARABIAN ODYSSEY

From the meeting point you will be taken to the desert in a 4 x 4 for an hour long adventure. On the way, you will try your hand at camel riding. Your safety of course is paramount with an experienced guide who takes care of the group as a whole. After the camel ride, you will try sand boarding a once in a lifetime experience to try surfing out of the water.

THE PEARL FISHERS NIGHT: DHOW CRUISE DINNER

This dinner pays tribute to the adventurous and enterprising spirit of the Emarati Pearl Fisherman. Pearling was the mainstay of the citys prosperity for many years but sadly succumbed to the development of the cultured pearl in the 1940s. Despite this, enterprising merchants bounced back, developing a thriving trade in gold and other commodities. The cruise aboard one of these traditional wooden vessels (dhow) offers a completely different view of city and allows you to witness the intertwining of the traditional with modernity. You will also see many other old wooden Dhows alongside luxury yachts,

splendid examples of modern architecture like the National Bank of Dubai and the spectacular Chamber of Commerce and Industry building. We will also see Sheikh Saeeds House (the birthplace of Sheikh Rashid) and the Heritage Village which are reminiscent of days gone by.

THE LITTLE ARABIAN GRAND CANYONS

This experience takes you in a 4 x 4 to the 200 year old village of Hatta, located in the rough Hajar Mountains, a truly adventurous drive through this rocky landscape. Approximately one hour of off road driving treats you to scenes of great and unexpected beauty. You will pass by big and small Wadis as well as lush landscapes and small settlements and villages set deep within the mountains. You will explore the Wadis and dry river beds, in winter these are normally flooded after the heavy rains running down from the Hajar Mountains. On the way back to Dubai there is a stop at one of the popular street markets where you can find local carpets and potteries.

LANGUAGE Although Arabic is the official language of the country, English is both widely spoken and understood. Even sign boards of business establishments and restaurants appear in both languages. The official language of the World Congress of Cardiology Scientific Sessions will be English.

CULTURE, RELIGION AND LOCAL CUSTOMS Islam being the predominant religion in UAE the local customs and traditions of UAE is influenced to a great extent by this religion. However it does not make UAE a closed

society. It seeks to promote the best in its traditions and customs so that the nation becomes vibrant and attractive to all the people. Politeness and courteous behavior is very much visible while dealing with guest of any kind. As part of the local UAE custom the local men wear the traditional dishdasha or khandura, a white full-length shirt-dress. It is worn with a white or red-checkered headdress known as a gutra. Many local women wear the black abaya, a long black robe that covers their normal clothes and they also wear a headscarf in the public. However, foreign tourists and followers of other religions can wear any clothes that they like, even if some in public places they are expected to respect the local custom and tradition of UAE by maintaining modesty in public appearance.

THE CITY The city of Dubai is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai and is located on the gulf cost. The city map of Dubai is available here. The metro system is safe, modern and clean and it is a very convenient way to go around Dubai. View the metro map here. Taxis are available at the airports and in the city, and taxi drivers do speak English.

CLIMATE The UAE has a sub-tropical, arid climate and blue skies can be expected most of the year. Rain is infrequent and falls mainly in winter. Temperatures range from a low of about 10.5C/50F to a high of 48C/118F. The mean daily maximum is 24C/75F in January rising to 41C/105.8F in July. Temperatures in April should be approximately 28C/83F.

CURRENCY The currency of the UAE is Dirham (Dh), or the Arab Emirate Dirham (AED), as known in the international business. The UAE Dirham is tied to the US Dollar at a steady exchange rate of USD 1 = Dh 3.675. The UAE currency notes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Dirhams. One Dirham equals 100 fils. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 fils, and 1 Dirham. However, coins with a denomination below 25 fils are of little value and are rarely used in the market. Banks usually give the best rates on foreign currency exchange but hotels and airports provide quick services and remain open outside banking hours.

LOCAL TIME The UAE is 3 hours ahead of GMT in summer and 4 hours in winter.

ELECTRIC POWER The voltage used in Dubai is 220 V. 3 Pin plugs are the most commonly used however any hotel will be able to provide an adapter if needed.
