Assignment 2012 - 20% of unit

Teams You will be expected to work in teams of 3 or 4. Each team should have a member who can program and to that end only one double degree student with Maths or Computing should be in a team. If there is any difficulty in forming teams assistance will be provided. By Friday 23rd March 2012, the names and student IDs of the team members should be emailed to Professor Stone, who will then give them their team number and their values for the relevant parameters. Task The torsional response at the free end of an undamped clamped/free bar is to be improved by adding a torsional vibration absorber as shown. The rubber insert behaves as a massless spring and a hysteretic damping element with a characteristic k(1+i). It is required to minimise the maximum response over the frequency range that covers the first two natural frequencies of the original clamped/free bar. Each team will be given values for L1 , D1, D2 and . The object is to minimise the maximum response by finding the optimum values of L 2 and k with the condition that L 2 <= L1 . The material of the clamped/free bar and the absorber bar is the same with density = 3 2 7800 kg/m and shear modulus G = 8 1010 N/m .

Report Your report should include your analysis and results including your optimised response. It should be less than 1000 words. The deadline for submission is Wednesday 2nd May 2012 at noon. Several teams will be selected for a viva to ensure all team members have made an appropriate contribution. Background material One of the objectives of this assignment is to develop life long learning skills so you will have to learn from the WWW.
