WVCSOs Grades 3-4 Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice wellness behaviors and reduce health risks that apply to daily living experiences. (3.09, 4.09) Standard 5: Students will: demonstrate motor skills and movement forms that enhance physical development that apply to daily living experiences. (3.07, 4.08) Grade 5 Standard 3: Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle that provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. (5.01) Standard 5: Students will identify and apply responsible, personal and social behaviors in physical activity settings. (5.02, 5.03, 5.04, 5.05) Objectives 1. During class, the students will perform different tasks to determine the accuracy of their pedometers and will do so while counting their steps with 90 % accuracy. 2. During class, the students will perform a variety of tasks while wearing a pedometer and will record their data with 100% accuracy. 3. While participating in Daytona 500, the students will work together as a team and increase their steps on their pedometers by 20 steps by the end of the race. 1st Century Themes Health Literacy 21st Century Skills Life and Career Skills Materials Music, Balls, Jump Ropes, Rugs, Hula Hoop, Exercise Bike, Scooters, Pedometers Technology Components Computer (music), Pedometers Teaching Methods & Learning Activities As soon as students enter the gym they will grab an exercise ball and sit in their ready position. a. Fitness Activity 1. Exercise Ball While utilizing music, the students will perform various movements (i.e., marching, punching, curling) to the following songs: -Its a Small World After All

-Yankee Doodle -Mack Chicken *Critical Thinking Question: What could be added to these dances to make them more difficult? After performing to the previous songs the students will then do various movements without music: *Critical Thinking Question: Can you explain to me how to do each of the following skills (critical elements)? (This will be asked before each skill) -Table: starting in a seated position, either cross arms across chest or put them on the side of the ball. Slowly walk feet forward (do not let them slide). Keep knees bent and position back onto ball. Slowly walk back up, pushing body into ball. Walk back up until in seated position. *Critical Thinking Question: What muscles are you using to perform this movement? -Legs Lifts with Swimming Kicks: Sit behind ball, place stomach on ball with hands and feet touching floor. Lift feet up and kick as if swimming, repeat. -Walking Forward: With stomach on ball, slowly walk forward until just knees or feet are on the ball. Then slowly walk back to position. -Arm Bounce: Sit behind ball with knees on floor. The elbow down to the hand should be placed on the ball. Bounce pushing body weight into the ball. *Critical Thinking Question: What is the part of the arm that is to remain on the ball called? -Bridge: Lie flat on back, hands on floor supporting body. Put ball under calves (ball should be between feet and knees). Raise bottom off of floor. *Critical Thinking Question: What is the technical term for your calf muscle? -Ball Lift: Lie flat on back arms out to side making a T, place one foot on the floor on each side of ball. Squeeze ball between feet and raise ball off of ground. Do not use hands and try not to drop ball. -Sit back on ball in ready position. b. Lesson Focus 1. Discuss using pedometers. 2.
