May 1, 2012 Dear Friend, Lets think the unthinkable for a moment.

We have two sources of information about God. One, we have his revelation of himself in the Bible. Second, we have Gods revelation of himself in the creation. I am operating on the assumption that these are both true representations of God. We can argue that case another time. But that being true, the facts of science, not to say the theories of science, will not conflict with the original revelation of God. There may well be a conflict between some scientific theory and some theological positions, and we need to brush these aside as irrelevant for now. It is my belief that the facts of creation and the truth of Gods revelation to man are both true witnesses of God. But we arent going to argue that case today either. What I want us to think about is the time before the beginning. I warned you that I wanted us to think the unthinkable. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:1-3). In the beginning, the Word already was. What was there before the beginning? Now, stretch your imagination as far as it will go. Theologians draw the distinction that God is the only uncreated being that is. So, lets call out the God of your imagination, and lets seat him wait, no, we cant seat him because no throne has yet been created. Let us stand God in space. Alone, the only light in the darkness of. . . what? Not space, because science argues that time and space began some 14 billion years ago. He would be alone, for until he created other beings, there werent any. How long do you suppose that condition prevailed? Imagine that. God, alone. Standing as the only light in the dark where there was nothing else for untold eons of time. It doesnt work, does it? It makes no sense. There may be two reasons it doesnt make sense. It doesnt make sense because it isnt true. It doesnt make sense because of our mental limitations. Accepting the limitations of our minds, because we have no choice but to accept them, it is still certainly not true that God stood alone in the dark for the eternity that existed before he created anything. So what is true? There was a beginning. On this, both the Bible and science agree. So whatever we can know about the time before the beginning, there was nothing and no one was created before that time. There was not even time as we know it, because that is also where time began.
