Title of Unit: The Constitution Title of Lesson: We the Kids

Lesson Plan #1 out of 5

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed to help build on students prior knowledge of the constitution and break it down for better understanding. To help better understand it the teacher will read We the Kids foreword by David Catrow. 2. Target Population: grade level: 5th grade skill level: students at all grade levels grouping: whole group reading & discussion, independent notes

3. Objectives: H2.5.2 Describe issues of compromise and conflict within the United States.

4. Procedure: 1. Teacher will ask students if they know anything about The Constitution. The teacher will have them write down what they know on a piece of paper for about 5 min. 2. After the 5 minutes the teacher will have the class discuss what they have written in their notebook. During this discussion the teacher will write down all of what the students are saying they know. 15 min. 3. After writing down a few of the comments the teacher will read We the Kids foreword by David Catrow. While reading the teacher will stop and discuss how the illustration describes that sentence. 10 min 4. After reading as a whole group teacher and students will create a more kid friendly version of constitution on the board using the illustrations in the book as reference. 15min 5. Assessment: An informal assessment for day 1 would be to make sure that at least one student contributes to the discussion and the contribution of the kid friendly constitution. 6. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? - Students will need to be able to draw clues from the illustrations in the book to be able understand what the constitution is and contribute to discussion. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? - To extend the lesson I will have the students as a group create their own constitution for the group they are in. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

I will work with students personally to help them understand the concept while I have one student be the writer on the board. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? The beginning can cause some problems since I am not sure if the students have any prior knowledge of the constitution to start of my lesson. Also I can see some students not being able to catch the pictures as hints to the meaning of the sentence.
