This article focuses on the technological steps that are being utilized by some hospitals to prevent incidents of abuse. The author writes about the problems of violence in the workplace and then shows how some hospitals are making the necessary changes to help protect their employees. The technological advancements written about in this article, all center on different computer systems that can be "snaked" throughout the different departments in a hospital. The author also cites specific examples and statistics about how these steps have helped lower incidents of abuse in the hospitals that use them. This piece could be used in the oppositions paragraph to show what some places have been doing to make conditions safe. It could also be used in my rebuttal to support the fact that many hospitals are not taking these types of steps. Child, R. J. Howerton, and Janet C. Mentes. "Violence Against Women: The Phenomenon Of Workplace Violence Against Nurses." Issues In Mental Health Nursing 31.2 (2010): 89-95. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. Web. 19 Apr. 2012. This article touches on varying aspect of both the problems of violence in hospitals, as well as possible solutions. The writers takes an in depth approach to explain everything from risk factors for violence to reporting and under reporting by staff. They cite specific examples and give statistics to help support the topics they are writing about. This article would help me write a rebuttal paragraph because it counters all of the arguments that are coming from the hospital side. This would be a secondary source because they do this by citing specific nurses thoughts on the matter. Christmas, Kate. "Workplace Abuse: Finding Solutions." Nursing Economic$ 25.6 (2007): 365-367. of workplace violence on a nurses private life. This would be a good source to help support my paragraph on nurses and their families. It state specific examples of how this violence can lead to other issues outside of work. OSHA Targets Workplace Violence At Hospitals. Hospital Employee Health 30.11 (2011): 121-123. CINAHL Plus with Full Text. Web. 17 April. 2012. This article is written about the U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the steps that they are taking to prevent work place violence. OSHA recognizes workplace violence against nurses as a major issue. This article uses several current specific examples of work place violence that could have been prevented by the implementation of specific policies and procedures. The piece also explains the passage of several legislative adjustments that have been made to the current laws in certain states in regards to abuse of medical staff. This article can be used a few different ways in my paper. I can use this to show specific examples of how hospitals did not take the proper steps to protect its employees. I can also use this show the other side of the argument. This article explains the steps that are currently being taken by states and institutions to correct this problem Robert A. Zeiss, et al. "Reducing Violence Against Nurses: The Violence Prevention Community Meeting." Issues In Mental Health Nursing 30.12 (2009): 745-750. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. Web. 19 Apr. 2012. This article is written by several members of the medical community and focuses on the Violence Prevention Community Meeting (VPCM). This is a secondary source because it talks about research that was done and discussed at that meeting. This article is more analytical because the authors use actual research and statistics to help support their piece. They focus in on one specific experiment that was done in a controlled environment to test the theories of work place violence. In the article, the authors discuss in detail the method of experimentation and review the results of it. This piece would be good in several of my paragraphs because it has clear cut results verses opinion. This is a way to put some statistical data in my paper. Taylor, Jessica L., and Lynn Rew. "A Systematic Review Of The Literature: Workplace Violence In The Emergency Department." Journal Of Clinical Nursing 20.7/8 (2011): 1072-1085. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. Web. 19 Apr. 2012. This article is different from my other pieces. It is an analysis of the literature that has been written on abuse of nurses from 2004 to now. The purpose of this article was to look at the

information that is out there and decide how thorough the research has been. In the article the authors state the perimeters of their experiment. They talk in depth about how literature was chosen. The finding of their research was that there is no universal definition of workplace violence. They also found that most articles simply made observations about violence or discussed the risk factors causing violence. Out of the articles they studied, they did not find many dealing with prevention. This article will be good in my rebuttal paragraph. It would show how the information is simply not out there. It would also be a good source to support my theory that hospitals are not taking all the proper steps to prevent violence.
