Custom Colors and Compounds by Penn Color, Inc. Extrusion Solution by ENTEK

Custom colors and compounds are Penn Colors business, and have been for over 40 years. This privately-held company continues to lead the way in the development of color solutions for masterbatches for the plastics industry, for a wide variety of resins. Five years ago, Penn Color went looking for an extruder supplier to help them upgrade their capabilities. They chose ENTEK, and since then they have purchased numerous ENTEK E-MAX twin-screw extruders. From initial trials at ENTEKs in-house lab

to test multiple formulations, to the significant time savings realized due to the fast color change abilities of the E-MAX during production runs, to the fast turnaround of spare parts and expedited shipments for ongoing productivity, Penn Color is a believer in the ENTEK difference. ENTEKs commitment to service is helping Penn Color succeed. Contact us today to find out how we can help you achieve your goals!

Norman J. Wagner Alvin B. and Julia O. Stiles Professor, Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Delaware STF Armor: Nanoparticle Composite Textiles and Performance Plastics for Flexible Ballistic & PunctureProtective Materials Leading an active research group at the University of Delaware, Professor Wagner pursues studies in the fields of rheology, complex fluids, particle technology, nanotechnology, and molecular science. He recently received the Paul A. Siple Memorial Award from the U.S. Army for his research on applications of shearthickening fluids for ballistic-resistant nanocomposite materials, jointly with scientists from the Army Research Labs. Professor Wagner is currently on sabbatical as a visiting professor of soft condensed matter physics at the University of Rome. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and a guest professor at the ETH, Zurich. He has over 90 publications in internationally recognized journals and is active in the Society of Rheology and AIChE (among other organizations). Dr. Wagner received his B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Presentation Abstract: Novel ballistic-, stab- and puncture-resistant flexible composite materials are synthesized from colloidal and nanoparticle dispersions exhibiting shear thickening, i.e., shear-thickening fluids (STFs). STFs are intercalated in aramid and other performance textiles. Through ballistic, stab & laboratory testing, the mechanism of energy adsorption at ballistic rates is demonstrated to result from reversible shear thickening. NIJ standard testing shows the performance enhancement of the composites. Control of particle size, size distribution, shape, surface and bulk properties in the synthesis is shown to be critical to performance. Melt blending of STFs with elastomers yields new materials, known as STFsuspoemulsions, with exceptional tear resistance. Potential applications of these dispersions as novel energy-absorbing materials are discussed.

Carbon Nanotubes in Polymers

Moderator: Brian Grady, University of Oklahoma

Carbon nanotubes have excellent mechanical properties and high thermal and electrical conductivities, making them ideal fillers for polymers in some applications. This forum brings together leaders in the field of carbon nanotubes/polymer composites to discuss the history and current understanding of how carbon nanotubes behave as fillers in polymers. The uniqueness of carbon nanotubes as compared to other fillers will be highlighted. Technical and economic challenges that must be overcome to expand the use of carbon nanotubes in polymers will also be discussed in this forum. Presentations include: Polymer Nanocomposites Containing Carbon Nanotubes: Flammability, Electrical, and Thermal Conductivity An Introduction to Carbon Nanotubes in Polymers Mechanical Properties of Polymer-Nanotube Composite Materials: Inverse Composites to Fibers Melt Processing of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites Commercial Applications for Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Polymers Sponsored by: Mohammad Moniruzzaman Brian Grady Jonathan Coleman Petra Poetschke Timothy Jozokos University of Pennsylvania University of Oklahoma University College, Dublin Leibniz-Institut fuer Polymerforschung Dresden Hyperion Catalysis

New Developments in Active and Intelligent Packaging

Moderators: Ryan Breese, Eclipse Film Technologies, and Maggie Baumann, G H Associates

The field of active and intelligent packaging has generated a great amount of excitement in the polymer industry. Active and intelligent packaging is a broad field, which includes both rigid applications, such as beverage containers, and flexible applications, such as films for food packaging. In addition, newer fields of polymer science, such as nanocomposite and biomaterial science, can be combined with traditional packaging science to provide insight into advanced development programs that will provide unique products in the future. The purpose of this session is to present new discoveries in materials science and demonstrate their advantages in a wide variety of packaging applications and to inspire the rethinking of today's packaging technology. 1:30 p.m.: Materials Chemistry for Printed Electronics Applications Elsa Reichmanis, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies 2 p.m.: Functional Films for Intelligent Packaging Ramesh Pisipati, Ph.D., Bayer MaterialScience LLC Dr. Daniel Rudhardt, Bayer MaterialScience AG Getter Materials for Quasi-hermetic Electronic Packaging Applications Gene Kim, Ph.D., Cookson Electronics Semiconductor Products A Technology Look Into the Future (RFID, SRA, Mobile Computing, Crisis Management) Wayne Smouse, Penn State University Polymer Technologies in RFID and Other Electronics Packaging Applications Panel Discussion

The biggest little story in blending.

Steve Maguire, President and Founder Maguire Products, Inc.

New MaxiBatch Blender, Maguires largest blender at 8000 lbs/hr is ideal for compounders (i.e. wood composite applications). It can handle up to twelve ingredients including powders.

Upgraded MicroBlender, Maguire's smallest blender; stainless steel hoppers; enhanced mix blade/static dam; improved handling of poorly flowing materials.

Leading bumper to bumper warranty in the industry.

When Steve Maguire popularized the gravimetric batch blender in the 80s, he started out small, working from his house. From those early blenders, the line has grown both larger and smaller; big and little, if you will. Now, the new Maxi Batch is the largest volume blender at 8000 lbs/hr and the littlest one- the Micro Blender- is still wellmicro. The concept however remains the same, actually improving through field trials. The real-world test is having 30,000 units installed worldwide.

U.S. Patent 6,154,980. Other U.S. and International patents pending.

Steve Maguire remembers his days as a processor and the ever-present pressure to produce. Technology, after all, is supposed to work for you, not against you. Thats why Maguire sees blender logic as the gateway to process control in the future. Accuracy, precise dosing, economy of materials never go out of fashion. And little things count, especially as resin costs rise. So the big story is really about combining productivity with savings. Why not make a little move today and contact us? Who knows? It could make a big difference.

The perfect blend of simplicity and control.
