he influence of Baba-Peranakan on Phukets culture started when Chinese ancestors migrated to Penang and Phuket, when the tin mining industry was flourishing. In those days, the raw materials had to be smelted in Penang as the journey to Bangkok was more difficult. Consequently, cultures in Phuket such as clothes, architecture, cuisine, language, knowledge etc were dramatically changed by a Penang influence. To this day, many Phuket people still have relatives living in Penang.

Baba Culture

Baba

in Phuket
Phuketians descend from various roots. There are descendants of local Thais in the Thalang District, offspring from Sea Gypsies who traveled from cove to cove, the Muslims, the Sikhs who migrated from Madras and inheritors from Westerners. Nevertheless, the majority of Phuket populations (about 75%) are ancestors of Chinese who have married with native Thais. The Thai-Chinese offspring are typically called Baba.

Baba-Peranakan culture is beautiful in both spirit and expression. For hundreds of years it has blended Thai, Chinese, Malay and Western customs and traditions.

Spirituality
Baba-Peranakan in Phuket are Mahayana and Theravada Buddhists. Mahayana Buddhists respect Chinese Gods, which can be clearly seen during the Vegetarian & Moon Festivals and also the altars placed in almost every house here

4th Phuket Baba Wedding Ceremony

The Peranakan, from the Malay language means locally born or descendant. It has used to describe the descendants who are part Chinese and part native Malay or Indonesian. Baba refers to the male offspring and Nyonya the female. In Singapore and Malaysia, the word Peranakan is typically used for a group of people while in Phuket the word Baba is more commonly used. Baba in Phuket mean Chinese descendants including both male and female. In Phuket, Peranakan is used for international communication in South East Asia. Even though most of Phukets population is BabaPeranakan, they live in peace and harmony with other races under the Kings Patronage of King Rama IV. Therefore, the way of life from many places are beautifully and indivisibly blended into the unique Phuket culture.

ith its laid back atmosphere and cheap living, Thailand attracts plenty of travellers who come to spend time practicing alternative health pursuits. Ancient Asian martial arts and wellbeing routines are offered alongside more contemporary activities and there are plenty of instructors, studios, retreats and workshops or courses run by locals and foreigners alike.

Phuket is literally teeming with venues offering the likes of tai chi & reiki, many of which are owned and operated by western expatriates with impressive teaching rsums. Whether you are a novice, intermediate or accomplished practitioner of a specific discipline, Phukets alternative health scene is capable of accommodating your needs.

Tai Chi originated in ancient China. Today it is practiced throughout the world as an exercise for better health. Tai Chi is a collection of slow, controlled and continuous weight shifting postures that are learned individually and then placed in a sequence. The form re-educates the body to move the way it should. When performed correctly, the movements are seamless and a form of moving meditation. Many scientific studies have proved that it is amazingly effective for health. Tai Chi is truly holistic exercising mind, body and spirit. It develops balance, concentration and calm, muscle strength, flexibility, good posture and co-ordination. Fasting is natures way of curing disease and one of the quickest ways of encouraging the body to rid itself of toxins, restore health and prolong life and vitality. When you abstain from food, the digestive system can rest allowing the body to use all of its energy and enzymes to focus on the elimination of toxic debris and wastes. Fasting also stimulates the pituitary gland, causing the release of growth hormone which helps to repair and regenerate damaged cells throughout the entire body.

The Two Most Damaging Emotions

The Two Most

Emotional Well-Being
he two basic emotions, fear and guilt, are the most challenging emotions affecting our overall physical and emotional well-being. They can sabotage our vitality, imbalance our physiology and rob us of our inner poise. These two principle emotional feelings have been demonstrated to underlie the full spectrum and ever-growing number of psychosomatic illnesses.

T
Fear

an emotion involving a distorted imagination of the future, arises when we assume unrealistically that we are about to experience more loss than gain, more drawback than benefit, more negative than positive, or more pain than pleasure. It results from an imbalanced pro-jection onto the future. It arises when we have been unwilling to look for the equilibrating gains, benefits, positives, and pleasures in advance, which bring our lives into harmony.

Guilt
an emotion involving a distorted memory of the past, arises when we unrealistically assume that we have caused ourselves, or others, more loss than gain, more drawback than benefit, more negative than positive, or more pain than pleasure. It results from an

imbalanced re-jection onto the past. It arises when we have been unwilling to look for the equilibrating gains, benefits, positives, and pleasures in advance, which brings our lives into order. Every event has two sides, both a positive and a negative. It is our accountability to find these two sides equally with our minds. Our emotions correspondingly fluctuate with our minds perceptions. We can become victims of personal circumstances and ill when we dont find the balance or we can achieve victory and well being when this inherent balance has been truly discovered. We have the power to heal within our own minds and hearts. Just as imbalanced emotional feelings can result in fear and guilt and can lead us into illness, the balanced feelings of love and appreciation can bring about our return to wellness. Love and gratitude can fortify our immune systems and initiate physiological poise throughout our body. Perfectly balanced perceptions give us the feelings that all is in order. Gratitude is therefore the key to our hearts and the pathway to our soul.

How does Cryo Slim work?

The science behind the Cryo Slim procedure, Cryolipolysis, was discovered by world-renowned dermatologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Their research showed that fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cold than other surrounding tissues, and that fat cells can be safely eliminated without harming the skin. The scientific discovery led to the development of Cryo Slim.

Are there any possible side effects with Cryo Slim?

Most patients experience minimal side effects with Cryo Slim. Skin may appear red several minutes to several hours after the procedure. All patients will experience mild bruising, but they can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.

How is the procedure performed?

The Cryo Slim procedure is performed under a doctors supervision with a non-invasive applicator that delivers precisely controlled cooling to target and eliminate fat cells in specific areas of your body without harming the surrounding tissues. A Specially designed applicator cup uses a gentle vacuum pressure to draw tissue between the cooling panels.

become quite demanding and unhealthy. Then I started managing a bar that was franchised to a five star hotel and as I made friends with people in the hotel I discovered a different aspect to the industry as well as a great opportunity for a more balanced life and personal development. I made a strong relationship with the General Manager, who remains my mentor until today, and investigated the possibility of moving through into the hotel operation. Eventually I was given an opportunity to manage the main hotel restaurant and quickly realised the hotel business was a great match to my personality and outlook on life. I worked hard to make the most of the opportunity I was given, and the hotel business quickly became my life.

orn and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 36 year old Morgan Layberry is Executive Assistance Manager, F & B of Holiday Inn Resort, Patong. After leaving university in Edinburgh, Scotland, he started working full time in hotels. His experience includes working at top Edinburgh hotel, The Caledonian, where he held a number of different positions. In 2005 Morgan decided to start traveling and has since then he has lived and worked in Cyprus, Dubai, Vietnam, Malaysia and finally arrived in Thailand on 6th January this year to work where he took up his position at the Holiday Inn Resort, Patong. Morgan has a wife, Catherine, and a daughter Charlotte who is 8 years old and still lives in Northern Ireland. Morgans position as Holiday Inns Executive Assistance Manager, F & B is a very busy one and Phuketindex.com are grateful to Morgan from taking time out of his busy schedule to answer some of our questions.

Holiday Inn Resort Phuket is a real oasis

Why you chose your chosen career?

At university I was actually studying pure mathematics and psychology, and the original intention was to graduate and take a high-powered, high-salary job in the financial sector. However, I had always worked in the hospitality industry on a part time basis to earn my pocket money at school and university, which was an experience I enjoyed immensely. When it was time to make a career decision, my mother, who is a very spiritual person, advised me to choose what I enjoy the most. My mother is always right, of course, so I took her advice and started working full time in hospitality. 14 years later I am grateful, but not surprised, that her advice was right. Through this industry I have been to places and met people I would never have had the opportunity to see or meet otherwise and my life is full of fond and exciting memories.

Please can you tell us about your F & B experiences?

I have had some wonderful experiences working in Food and Beverage, particularly with having travelled within so many different countries and cultures. Some of the highlights, apart from the many wonderful friends I have made from all corners of the world, include: organizing and coordinating a concert in Dubai headlining some big names such as Jamie Cullum, Mika and Madness - and of course getting to meet the stars back-stage; serving dinner to the Queen of Norway during a state visit to the Vietnamese President in Hanoi; and eating lunch with native Iban head-hunter warriors deep in the primary rainforest of Borneo. My favorite and longest lasting memory, however, is from the first hotel I worked in and I was fortunate enough to get a private concert from Burt Bacharach, who wanted to practice for his up-coming concert on our grand piano. I was the manager on duty at the time, so I opened up the piano room for him and he played and sang while I enjoyed a glass of wine. Priceless!

Why did you decide to join the hotel and tourism sector?
I started off working in cocktail bars and clubs which was great fun and I made a lot of friends, but the working hours were very anti-social and after a while the lifestyle can

People
What are the necessary skills for F & B management?
First and foremost you must love people. Having a healthy love of food and beverage is important, but if you are not a people person you step inside the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket you have a great choice of dining options, but all are under-pinned by consistent, friendly and enthusiastic service from team members who have been trained to international standards. Most importantly, you have the absolute peace of mind that only an international brand can offer in terms of service delivery, product quality, safety and value. And with 4 restaurants, 3 bars, televised sports and live entertainment you have a venue and ambience to suit every possible occasion.

What are the benefits of each restaurant?

I am proud to say that we have all the bases covered here. Charm Thai offers great traditional Thai dishes and fresh seafood throughout the day in a relaxing and friendly Thai style setting, overlooking the pools and fountains of our Busakorn villa wing. Terrazzo gives you the opportunity to watch the energetic activity of Patong beach front from a relaxing open air terrace style restaurant and bar serving the best Italian food all through the day and until late in the evening (in February it gets even better as we will be offering a complimentary cold draught beer with every pizza!). Sams Steakhouse offers a classic fine dining experience - prime cuts of the best imported beef, table side service and a great wine cellar make it the perfect venue for a special family occasion, an intimate evening for two or simply an any-day treat! Seabreeze offers a great international a la carte menu throughout the day and we are currently running a series of themed dinner buffets at really competitive prices - the seafood buffet on Tuesdays and Saturdays is excellent, with a great selection of the very freshest fish and shellfish.

you cannot succeed. The real nature of our industry is people and unfortunately people are unpredictable. Every team member is different, every boss is different and most importantly every guest is different. We spend a lot of time putting solid plans and strategies in place, but at the end of the day, once the people factor is introduced, the plans often go out the window and you have to deal with every individual guest, team member and situation in the context of the moment. You need to be able to empathize, you need to be flexible with your time, you need to be patient and you need to be able to make quick decisions. If you are naturally resilient and people oriented, the hospitality industry will provide a varied, fun and satisfying challenge.

We have all the bases covered here

Who are your customers?

Every nationality, age, shape and size! Predominantly hotel guests, of course, but we have a very loyal following from within the Phuket community and a lot of friends who we love to see coming back again and again! We offer a good variety, great quality, excellent value and of course a level of service that people just love. We are surrounded by a lot of good restaurants, but as a destination dining experience in Patong nothing else comes close to the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket!

Why must people dine in Holiday Inn Resort Phuket?

Phuket is super tough place to run any food and beverage operation, and especially in Patong where the restaurants and bars are literally wall to wall. There is an enormous choice here, from street stalls to five star boutique hotels and everything in between. The attraction to me of the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket is that it is a real oasis an escape from the insanity of the beach front area. Once

ocated at the rear of JW Marriotts lobby area is the popular Cucina Italian Restaurant. In Italian Cucina translates to kitchen and this certainly reflects the mood, ambiance and design of this relaxed dining venue. Upon entering this Italian countryside themed restaurant, we were greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of freshly cooked pizza and views of the redbrick pizza from where the aromas were being emitted. The open view kitchen allows guests to see just how hard the kitchen team works with preparing the dishes and presenting them with total perfection.

Michael Wenk Executive Assistant Manager

Mvenpick Resort Bangtao Beach

Taking up the position of General Manager or Executive Assistant Manager (EAM) of a resort here on the Pearl of the Andaman is by no means a walk in the park even for the most experienced of managers. So imagine the pressure being felt by 25 year old Michael Wenk, who having only left university one year ago, is EAM of Mvenpick Resort Bangtao Beach. Michael was appointed as EAM when Mvenpick teamed up with property owners Diamond Management Co. Ltd in May 2011.

orn to a Swiss/Italian father and Swiss/German mother in Taipei, Taiwan, Michael moved with his family to Hong Kong at an early age. He lived and studied in Hong Kong for 18 years. After finishing his Abitur at German Swiss International School he moved to Switzerland to continue his studies at the Ecole htelire de Lausanne, where he graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management in February 2011, he has been here in Phuket since graduating. We caught up with the young EAM to find out more about him and the Mvenpick Resort Bangtao Beach.

Can you tell us about the new resort here in Bangtao Beach?
The resort opened in 2009 under the management of the Palm Beach Club. However, as its so difficult being an independent hotel in Phuket, property owners Diamond Management Co. Ltd. decided to team up with Mvenpick Hotels & Resorts to promote the property and bring it to an international level. In May 2011 the property was rebranded as Mvenpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket. The property itself is a boutique luxury resort comprising of 40 units, including luxurious penthouses and two and threebedroom suites, complete with large balconies and some having a private pool or Jacuzzi. All of our units are fully furnished and are basically a home away from home. Our fully equipped kitchens make the units ideal for families, friends and long-term guests. We have a spa, with both single and double treatment rooms, Sauna and Steam room, a 48-meter swimming pool nestled amid large open space and tranquil gardens, lively dining options and a modern fitness centre as well as a games room and childrens play area. You name it, we have it.

The latest thing we are about to launch is our beach club, which is right across the road from the resort. This is going to be a big addition to the resort. Other hotels boast of having a beach club but I believe none of these are located as close to the resort as ours.

How will you be promoting the new resort?

First of all, we need to ascertain our core market target. Once we have determined this we will promote Mvenpick Resort Bangtao Beach via various on and offline channels. We will attend road shows and do numerous of sales calls in order for us to generate brand awareness here in the Laguna area.

How do you compete with other resorts that are already established within the area?
Its a big challenge to compete with them, especially as some have built up a fantastic reputation over 20 years or more. I think for us to compete with the other resorts we need to know exactly who our main competitors are. We need to know what they offer and how they operate. Once we have done the ground research we will put our own touch to things, add more hospitality to our service and be more innovative.

Hotels & Resorts

People What will make guests stay in your resort?
The uniqueness of our product as we will provide whatever the customer needs. Having said that all our units feature a fully equipped kitchen our guests can experience a personal chef within their apartment. Having one of the best locations on the island with a spectacular view as well as a private beach club is definitely something to remember. I can guarantee once people have visited our property and experienced what we have to offer they will come back again and again.

How do you go about recruiting the necessary staff for the new resort?
Depending on the position required whether it is a head of department we go through head hunters and for the other employees we go through the online recruitment channel as well as mainly through employee referral scheme. It is essential to have employees who are team players with a lot of drive and trust. Our current workforce is well aware what we require from them and how we operate and that is a key reason why our emphasis is on referral scheme.

In your opinion, what makes a good resort EAM?

EAMs need to be not just qualified and experienced, but also to possess a genuine desire to serve, to be versatile and quick thinking, have good numeracy skills for daily budgeting and forecasts and to be able to keep a clear head in a stressful situation. Interpersonal and communication skills are also very important; especially when dealing with speakers of other languages. It is vital for a resort EAM to have a high energy level to cope with the long hours and having the ability to think strategically and not just be process orientated.

Whats your main aim for the resort now that its open?
For me, Im sure its the same as any resort; we want to be the market leader in our segment. To satisfy both the customers and the shareholders, this can be achieved by serving our customers to the fullest and to ensure that they will choose our resort in the future again. Mvenpick resort Bangtao Beach Phuket 35 Moo 4, Cherngtalay, Thalang 83110 Phuket Thailand Tel: +66 (0) 76 310 400 Fax: +66 (0) 76 310 405 residences.phuket@movenpick.com

What are the most/ least enjoy aspects of your job?

What I enjoy most is certainly the daily interaction with our guests as well as the positive feedback from our customers. The least, at present, is that Im not fluent in the Thai language. Sometimes I miss being able to speak with the locals in their mother tongue and not being able to understand what they really want.

Fly Between Centuries Old Trees @ Flying Hanuman

If you want to see Phukets true natural beauty, forget about elephant trekking. The islands newest and only 100% eco-friendly adventure attraction has officially opened. Flying Hanuman has only been welcoming guests since late December 2011 but is already a massive hit with locals and tourists alike. Spread over 80,000 square meters of forested land, Flying Hanuman is an adventure trip that adds a spectacular fun factor to its lush setting. The plot was left untouched when the natural maze was constructed, letting visitors get up close and personal with this rarely seen side of the island. After a welcome drink, registration and safety briefings, you make your way up the hillside to the first custom-made platform. There are 28 of these tree-mounted stations connected by 15 ziplines and other exciting contraptions and activities. The most thrilling sections include a 400m zipline that takes you to over 60 kilometers-per-hour as well as a 40m abseil point from the upper branches of a centuries old tree to the ground. All the while, you will be granted amazing views over Phukets landscape.

Nature is the one who decided!

In March 2011, 23 year old Duangpon Hanseree received a bachelors degree of Architecture with 1st Class Honours, with a gold medal (which means 1st rank of 1st Class Honours, from a 5 years summary), and she has also won prizes from architectural design contests and academic awards. In July 2011 Duangpon joined Habita Architects, one of Bangkoks leading architectural firms. On her first day on the job, she was handed a brochure about ziplines and an email from Chanintat Mon Pachantabutr, GM of Skytrek Adventures Co., Ltd. (the company behind Phukets Flying Hamuman) and told her first official project was to design bamboo constructions suitable for this adventure tour, set in Phukets rainforest. Phuketindex.com was lucky enough to meet Duangpon and ask how she went about designing such a unique project.

about ascending and subtractive space, also fusing in and out. I saw a bending chamber hiding between the huge stones and leading out to the inner court yard, which is where the activity flows. After that, I would say nature is the one who decided. All the buildings positions, layout shapes and scales were placed respectfully to every tree, so none would be cut.

How does this project differ from what you learnt in university?
Everything is different; because this was my first official project in the real field. I studied public buildings, sloped land, and nature, but previously only on paper. The biggest difference is that its built! Anyway I could tell this was a rare project, due to its adventure purpose. This building concept is hardly seen, the unique forest site, the owners vision and the Hanuman. This was also my first time designing a structure using bamboo. I studied and got to know bamboo from the beginning. Fortunately, I had Khun Suntan, Habitas specialist bamboo architect, who could advise me about the basic principles of bamboo constructions and joining techniques.

What is your favourite feature of the project?

The nature! This doesnt only mean the surroundings, but also the architecture; it is the touch. Just stand there and feel it, youll know what I mean once you have seen the venue.

How did you decide on the concept of design for this project?
The first thing that really caught my attention was massive rocks. I saw a line of these sitting giants and thought of creating a journey through them, creating a tunnel which opens out to nature. This is where the entrance lobby would start. I thought

night Frank Thailands previous research indicated the majority of condominiums were concentrated from Layan Beach down to Bang Tao Beach, Surin Beach, Laem Sing Beach and Kamala Beach (North Western Area), and accounted for about 31% of the total supply, followed by the Mid Western Area, covering Kalim Beach down to Patong Beach and this accounted for 28%. In 2011, the area for condominiums shifted to Kata and Karon Beach (South Western Area) and accounted for 59% of the new supply, followed by the Mid Western Area, accounting for 38%, while there was only 3% located in the North Western Area. Mr. Natthas view is that developers have adjusted their plans in order to supply the new demand. It was already known that condominium buyers in Phuket were previously from England, Germany and Scandinavia, as well as expatriates working in Singapore and Hong Kong. The emerging market is from the Middle East, Asia and Russia. The target group prefer Patong Beach due to its reputation for its nightlife, as well as the 2-kilometer beach that runs the entire length of Patong. However, the majority of supply was in Kata. This was due to the availability of land and affordable land prices, allowing developers to develop budget condominiums for the emerging market. Mr. Nattha also indicated that the transformation of guest demographics has affected the average length of stay and directly affected the required condominium unit type. The new group has shorter periods of stay, about 4-5 days. Most have travelled to Phuket as a couple or with their friends, rather than as a family. Thus, the preferable unit type for this target is smaller units such as studios and 1-bedroom units,

Mr. Nattha concluded that the future condominium supply in Phuket will be in the areas of Patong, Karon and Kata. Eden Oasis Phase 2 just launched recently, with 11 completed units, whereas Amari Residence Phuket

However, the area which will attract locals is Phuket Town, another area which will develop condominium projects for instance, Phumantra, a project consisting of 15 buildings and with only 9 units to each building. There are many listed developers in the process of negotiating for pieces of land in Phuket such as Sansiri, Pruksa, LPN etc.

What is Wings?

Wings is a creative boutique collection of one-bedroom pool villas, designed with Romantic Peranakan architectural concepts, and boast plot sizes ranging from 144 sqm up to 200 sqm, with their own private 6.5m pool and courtyard. Inspired by the historical Sino architecture of Old Phuket, Wings is a contemporary interpretation of traditional laid-back lifestyles, where privacy is paramount and enjoyment can be experienced in secluded indoor and outdoor living spaces. Wings is developed by the Attitude Club (former Twovillas Group) a team of creative, forward thinking property developers with a track record of 20-years experience and who have so far created 19 residential environments in Phukets Naiharn, Bangtao and Panwa Bay Coastal areas. Phuketindex.com recently spoke to Ms. Kanokpan Pranveerapaiboon (Khun Kwan) General Manager of Wings about the imagination and inspiration which went into creating such a stylish project.

Living Inspiration
The charm of Old Phuket Towns 18th century architecture has been an inspiration to the artistically inclined for generations. Although we have not tried to copy this unique architecture, we have used this as a theme for our designs. It also proved a popular theme of improvisation for the designers of Wings. Wings overwhelming success was down to its ideal location, affordability as a starter or holiday home, and most of all, a fresh architectural approach to a traditional theme.

Live and breathe a life of inspiration. An artistic fusion of modern-sino architectural concepts for inspiring indoor and outdoor living

We gave the architects and designers a free reign to create an exclusive community of contemporary single-story abodes inspired by the colonial architecture found around Old Phuket Town and the streets of sister towns in Penang and Malacca, Malaysia.

In fact, the principle exterior colour chosen for Wings homes was a stunning ocean blue, emulating the faade of one of the elegant colonial-era mansions in Penang, which has given Wings homes a uniquely fresh and vibrant character. As with colonial architecture, the designers gave the modern Wings homes a classic touch of class while keeping things practical and making the most of the tropical climate, to offer stylish private pool villas at an affordable price she said.

Artistic Expression
Wings is especially suited to trendy singles and couples wanting a private, modern abode. Architectural expression has been used to create homes with special living spaces designed to meet individual needs on practical and emotional levels and set free the artist within. Located in quiet, natural surroundings in a historical area of Phuket Wings peaceful location is in the cradle of ancient civilization 5 mins to Laguna Phuket, 10 mins to Bangtao Beach, 15 mins to Airport, 20 mins to Phuket Town. The 28 secluded single-storey private homes are akin to a collection of artworks - lovingly designed to offer a sanctuary of peace and inspiration. said Ms. Kanokpan

Ambitious architecture of practical privacy crafted to inspire

The homes each cover 137 square metres (sqm) with at least half of the area dedicated to outdoor living, including a 23.48 sqm roof terrace large enough to easily accommodate a big table with sun umbrella and deck chairs. The covered parking area for Wings residents provides enough shaded space for one car per unit and is set away from the homes to minimize disturbances. Residents then walk down a pathway to their private villa entrances. Privacy is complete once inside each compact Wings compound, where the elongated 17.6m x 8m arrangement offers a very spacious and functional living environment; separating the living area, bedroom and bathroom, but keeping them well lit with natural light.

Living Within Art Set your imagination free and let inspiration soar
These are new homes with an old story. Just like traditional Peranakan houses, natural light is allowed to fill the rooms. The front entrance opens to a highceiling hall with an oriental backdrop, which leads to the spacious bedroom and en-suite bathroom.
