As far as India is concerned, the term Public Sector Undertakings indicates the GovernmentOwned Corporations. This term is used to refer companies in which either territorial/state/union government owns 51% or more equity. When people are asked about their favorite employer to work with, some people might say that it would be great to work with a particular employer, while the opinion of other might differ. However, when it comes to public sector undertakings most of the people might be happy to work with these organizations mainly due to the job security as compared to private sector companies. The names of the top operators in the public sector in India are given below: PUBLIC SECTOR COMPANIES LIST IN INDIA TOP 10 PUBLIC SECTOR COMPANIES ARE AS FOLLOWS ; Indian Oil Corporation: Indian Oil Corporation is one of top employers in Public Sector and the company offers a wide range of employment opportunities for the Indian youth. The turnover the company is more than 200000 crores of Rupees and they hold the pride of being one of the profitable public sector companies. As far as petroleum industry is concerned, Indian Oil Corporation is the 20th largest manufactures in the world. NTPC: NTPC stands for National Thermal Power Corporation and this is the largest company in Power Sector in India. The company contributes a share of about more than 28% for the entire power generation of India and they have so far installed a power capacity of more than 29000 MW. BPCL: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited or BPCL is the company that has been listed in the Forbes 2000 and Fortune 500 listings. The company went across a rapid growth after

nationalization and they are dealing with products like solvents and petrochemicals, fuel for domestic & international airlines and industries, specialty lubricants & aircraft fuel. HPCL: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation of India or HPCL holds the pride of having the largest lube refineries in India and this company has also been listed in the Fortune 500 listings. They have business units in different areas like lubes, LPG, Bulk fuel, aviation, refineries, Retail, trade, E & P and ventures. The turnover of the company was Rs. 1,08,599 crores during the financial year 2009-10 and have about 20% of Indias market share. ONGC: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation or ONGC is one of the highest profit making corporations in India and the company offers a lions share of 81% towards the natural gas production and 77% towards crude oil production in India. The company earned the status of Public Sector company in the year 1993 on the 23rd of June. SAIL: SAIL stands for Steel Authority of India and it is the largest company involved in the process of steel making. They are fully integrated iron and steel making company dealing with the production of both special and basic steels for different purposes like defence industries, automotive, railway, power, engineering, domestic construction and for export as well. BHEL: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is the largest manufacturing and engineering enterprise in India in the infrastructure/energy-related sector and it has been in this field for more than 40 years now. The company has been earning good profits right from the financial year 1971-72 and they are paying dividends right from the financial year 1976-77. They are contributing towards the core sectors of Indian economy by manufacturing 180 different products under 30 different groups of products. BSNL: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is one of the largest players in the telecom industry in India and they have millions of commercial and household setups to meet the telecommunication need in different parts of India. In the present modern world, they offer a wide range of services including Intelligent Networking, leased line, ISDN, MPLS VPN, Managed network services, broadband, internet, WLL, WiMax, mobile and last but not the least landline. HAL: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is the largest player in the aeronautical engineering sector in India and they have different divisions like industrial & marine gas turbine division, transport

aircraft division, overhaul division, helicopter division, engine division, foundry & forge division, avionics division and accessories division for offering different services to aeronautical sector in different parts of the country. They are always showing development with respect to their sales and profit figures every year. Bharat Dynamic Limited: This company holds one among the top ten positions in the Public Sector Undertakings in India because of the diligence and sheer grit displayed in their balance sheet and the improvement in terms of profitability shown by them every year. As mentioned earlier, working in public sector undertakings offer a great level of job security, specifically in the present recession period.
