MEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, JAMSHORO DEPARTMENT OF TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING RF & Mobile Networks: Group Assignment for

07TL Section 1I Please read the questions carefully. Each group has to attempt only ONE question in consultation with the students in their respective groups and submit/bring a hardcopy of it at the time of vive-voce, that is, from 03-05-2010 and 04-05-2010. Total Marks: 10 (05 for theory and 05 for practical) Q#1: The synchronization of Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DS SS) is one of the most significant aspects of the design. The local PN generator at the receiver must be exact replica of and in synchronism with the embedded PN sequence at the received DS SS signal. How this synchronization is carried in DS SS based systems (e.g., CDMA etc). Discuss the various problems, issues, types and possible solutions of synchronization in the design of DS SS communication system. Group 12: 07TL: 47, 48, 49, 51 and 52.

Q#2: Among the various applications of spread spectrum systems, jamming is of significance. In designing an anti-jamming system called jammers, the basic assumption to be made is that the jammer has complete knowledge of the spread spectrum design except it does not have key to PN sequence generator. In other works the design involves designing jammer waveforms which can best be suited for different scenarios. Discuss the system model of a jammer in detail. Briefly describe the various types and their possible applications. Group 13: 07TL: 53, 54, 55, 58 and 59.

Q#3: In CDMA 2000 standard we use a combination of Walsh & PN sequence to differentiate the users. Unlike CDMA 2000 standard the UMTS system which is based on WCDMA system uses Orthogonal Variable Spread Factor (OVSF) codes. Describe in detail how these codes re used to differentiate among various users in UMTS system. Do you think that OVSF codes are better codes than those used in CDMA 2000 systems? Provide sufficient reasons and justification to support your answer. Group 14: 07TL: 60, 61, 62, 63 and 73.

Q#4: Convolutional codes are very popular error correction codes; they are used in many communication systems. Compare the bit error rate performance of a Convolutional coded system with an un-coded system in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel. Write a technical report in your own words on the performance of these codes. Group 15: 07TL: 70, 71, 72, 74 and X91.

Q#5: What techniques can be used to mitigate the affect of frequency selective fading? Design a QPSK modem and simulate its error rate performance under the mentioned channel (choose suitable channel profile). Use your proposed method to improve the systems performance. Group 16: 07TL: 88, 134, 136, 139, and 142.

Q#6: Design and planning of a CDMA 2000 network involves various steps from initial planning to final planning in different phases. The PN planning & Handoff planning is one of the most significant factors which determine the success of planned system before or after its launch. What is your understanding of PN & Handoff Planning in CDMA 2000 networks? Describe in detail how you solve the problems associated with them. What are the processes involved in the PN & Handoff Planning? Group 17: 07TL: 36, 78, 79, 81 and 82.

Q#7: Design and implement a graphical user interface (GUI) that calculates Link Budget for GSM 900 and DCS 1800 systems Group 18: 07TL: 83, 84, 85, 92 and 135.

Q#8: Design a frequency-selective multipath fading simulator which takes into account the effects of propagation delays. The simulator designed will be able to plot the frequency selective fading model with good resolution. Also compute average fade duration (AFD) and level crossing rate (LCR) of the model. You may use any platform (e.g., MATLAB, C++ etc.). Describe in detail the operation and working of the designed simulator. Group 19: 07TL: 93, 123, 124, 125 and 126.

Q#9: What is meant by multiplexing and multiple-access? Explain these concepts from the point-of-view of CDMA2000, LTE and WiMAX 802.16e communication systems. Group 20: 07TL: 127, 128, 129, 130 and 131.

Q#10: What is meant by spreading? What is the difference between spreading and scrambling? What types of sequences are used for spreading and scrambling? What are the reasons behind their use? Support your answer by plotting graphs/numerical calculations. Group 21: 07TL: 90, 138, 140, X84 and X86.

Q#11: Compare the BER performance of QPSK, 16-QAM and 16-PSK in AWGN, Rayleigh, and Rician fading channel. Show the computations and plots/graphs. Group 22: 07TL: 68, 74, X101, X121 and X1136.

Q#12: What is meant by ISI? How can it be mitigated? Design a simple QPSK based modem, test the system for a channel where ISI occurs and show how your proposed scheme will improve performance. Group 23 07TL: 65, 66, 67, 76 and 77.
