YOUR COMPLIMENTARY WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SINCE 2006

An Indian-origin family of four, including two children, was found dead on Tuesday and the Australian police are treating it as a murder-suicide case. The bodies of Nilesh Sharma (34), his wife Pritika (32), Divesh (5) and Divya (3) were found at their Glen Waverley home in the citys outskirts.

Fijian Family Found Dead In Australia

The Fijian-Indian family, which moved to Australia over a decade ago, had lived in Glen Waverley for at least two years and Nilesh and Pritika appeared to have been a normal, happy couple, Australian news agency reported. The father was found in a hallway, the others in their bedrooms. Everybody is devastated, said Abhay Singh, uncle of the two deceased children. Everyone had attended a family get-together last Saturday, he said, drinking, laughing, and socializing well into the night. They were a really lovely family, very reserved, Singh

said. It is shattering, he said. Police were called to the family's Glen Waverley home for a welfare check when Divya was not taken to family day care for the second day running. A cousin contacted by the centre was unable to rouse the family and alerted police. Police entered the house and found the four bodies about 11am. The media believes the children had been smothered. Singh said the couple did not have marriage problems and he believed they died from a leaking gas tank. Its a mystery, he said. "He was an accountant, she was also well qualified. Police are investigating whether there is a link between the suspected murder-suicide of a young family in Melbourne's east and a fiery car crash involving the same family late last year. In the smash at Sassafras, Mr Sharma was driving when the vehicle crashed down an embankment at the intersection of Mountain Highway and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and hit a tree before bursting into flames. Passing cyclists who noticed the smoke pulled the family to safety. Mr Sharma suffered chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries in the crash, while his wife suffered neck and stomach pain. The children were distressed but not injured. Post-mortem examinations are underway to confirm the cause of death.

People in Fiji's Western Division diagnosed with kidney infections will no longer have to travel to Suva for treatment as a dialysis centre is now open in Nadi. Retrial Date Set For Murder Case

A retrial date has been set for a 22 year old woman who allegedly killed her two children by throwing them into the Rewa River four years ago. A crying Ronika Devi of Nasinu appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando and pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. Malnutrition Cases Reported In Flood Affected Areas

Children in Fiji's flood affected areas are malnourished, says the Ministry of Health. Spokesman Peni Namotu said the children are from the Western Division and lack of proper and timely diet has resulted in the rise. Namotu said the loss of crops and livestock has made life difficult for many families and children are fed whatever their parents can afford in these difficult times. The ministry conducted a nutrition survey in the Western Division last week and the results will be released next week. Namotu said they are working with authorities and are trying their best to help affected children.

Sugar Industry Will Bounce Back, Says PM

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has assured other sugargrowing nations Fiji's sugar industry will bounce back from the damage caused by recent flooding. The assurance could not have come at a better time for it was done as the International Sugar Organisation council concluded the world sugar economy had a global surplus. Tentative projections suggest the world sugar balance will remain in surplus in 2012-2013. Commodore Bainimarama believes the assistance of Fiji's international partners and the will of the people will determine much in terms of developing the sugar industry. "We are confident that with concerted efforts of all concerned and support of all our international partners and the resilience of our people, we will make up for the unforeseen setback and forge ahead with the implementation of necessary reforms to ensure the sustainability of the sugar industry as well as the overall economic development of the country," Commodore Bainimarama said. Briefing the ISO council last week, Commodore Bainimarama said the government and the industry stakeholders had made steady progress with respect to the reform and rehabilitation program to revive the industry. "Steady progress has been made in terms of the implementation of the various initiatives in the sugar sector," he said. He also shared with them the impact of the recent flooding in Fiji. "The country encountered unprecedented severe weather conditions at the beginning of this year," he said. In addition to the loss of human lives, properties and personal effects, Commodore Bainimarama said considerable damage was also caused to the infrastructure, cane crop, and one of the sugar factories. In March, he said another period of incessant and heavy rain was experienced over a more widespread area, including areas affected by the January flood. "This resulted in further widespread destruction of infrastructure, including cane crops and other agricultural crop in general and properties," said Commodore Bainimarama. "In the sugar sector, our assessment indicate total damage of about $20million dollars." As an immediate step and to ensure the farmers have every opportunity to quickly replant crops and are not tied down by financial burdens, Commodore Bainimarama also updated the council on the assistance scheme for cane farmers affected by the flood.

Fish Tax Enormous Russian Foreign Affairs Minister,

The reintroduction of a fish levy tax has forced foreign boats off our shores and tarnished Fiji's international image, the Fiji Tuna Association of Stakeholders said. The association, representing the interest of service providers to the tuna industry, said the levy of $350/ tonne imposed on foreign fish exported directly from Fiji cost locals their jobs. Association spokesman John Lee said the tax, which was imposed in June last year, was executed without consultation with the service providers. "The fish is caught outside Fiji's waters and is considered foreign," he said. He said the government's endeavour to protect the industry fell short of considering the negative economic impact the levy would pose to service providers. "Imposing tax on trans-shipment of cargo or fish on an international port is in breach of World Customs Organisation and World Trade Organisation in which Fiji's Customs Authority and the government is party to. "The alternate way this levy could be imposed is through an affordable service fee as mentioned in the budget on the Fisheries segment," Mr Lee said. He said most fishing boat owners were looking for alternative countries to conduct trans-shipment with eight months into the imposition of the fish tax levy in Fiji. "To see the downturn of fishing vessels into Fiji has forced some businesses to downsize by laying off workers and shifting business altogether," Mr Lee said. Questions sent to Director Fisheries Sanaila Naqali remained unanswered. Fiji Tuna Boat Owners Association

Sergey Lavrov spokesman Grahame Southwick said two years ago the fisheries authority began to allow foreign fishing vessels based in Fiji to export without the use of Fiji processing plants. "This allowed them to come to the Kings Wharf, and using their own crew, unload the fish directly into containers and ship it out. "This meant no fish for all the Fiji processors, and PAFCO was reduced to three-day weeks, the five Suva processors had empty factories and staff members were laid off.

Governments commitment to facilitate women participation in decision making will see Government coordinate the BRIDGE (Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections) Program to educate women on the electoral processes. The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation director Mrs Salote Radrodro says that her Ministry is looking forward to a partnership with the UN Women to pursue this Program. The BRIDGE program is a comprehensive community capacity building program that focuses on womens participation in elections, legal frameworks, and addresses the barriers women face to register and vote and educating women on electoral processes. It builds the confidence of elections professionals and focuses on the importance of women to exercise their voting rights, Mrs Radrodro said. She said it also focuses on what communities and groups can do to bring about change to enhance womens participation and representation. The program uses the Gender and Elections module. The methodology used in workshops is that it focuses on

World Safety Day Celebrations

The need to integrate safety and health at work into green job policies was highlighted at the World Occupational Health and Safety Day celebrations in Lautoka. Speaking at the celebrations at Natabua High School, Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Jone Usamate said that World OHS day is an opportunity to reflect on health and safety issues at workplaces. Mr Usamate said it is also a time to remember all those who faced OHS challenges at their workplaces. Green jobs initiative is a joint initiative of the United Nations Environment programme and the ILO, the International Organisation of Employers and international trade unions. It seeks to support and promote environmentally sustainable or green jobs and decent work, Mr Usamate said. He said that green economies require changes in the way we do things such as in technology and the changes in standards for what is accepted internationally. A true green job or a true green economy must integrate safety and health into design, procurement, operations, maintenance, sourcing and recycling policies, certification and quality standards. This is especially relevant for sectors such as construction, waste recycling, solar energy production and biomass processing, the minister said. Mr Usamate said ensuring health at work has an impact on the labour market as workers have to be trained and they assess the way things are done in light of the new policies. He added that government is currently working on reforms to ensure better occupational health and safety at workplaces. Government in its part is intent on ensuring that together we can build a better, sustainable Fiji as enshrined in the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress. We are currently reforming our Workers Compensation Act and developing a Draft Work Care Decree for occupational health and safety and also workers compensation. All these reforms will lead to changes that will result in better enterprises, better workplaces and ultimately a better society, Mr Usamate added. The theme for this years celebrations is Promoting Occupational Health and Safety in a green economy

human rights and womens participation and links the while discussions on governance and elections and ties them together to the importance of womens increased representation as an essential pillar to enhance positive development, Mrs Radrodro said. She said a total of 20 trainings are expected under this program and it will witness the emergence of accredited bridge trainers going out in the communities to facilitate the necessary trainings. The First phase of the program will include a national training where we are sourcing some potential trainees from the communities, so far we are looking at 6 trainees from North, 6 from West, 4 from the Central and likewise 4 from the Eastern divisions, she said. We will also be including young girls, single mothers and senior citizens to educate them on the importance of their voices being heard. The program is to recognize that every citizens as individuals or groups of women are important partners for sustainable development, good governance and credible elections. The Ministry of Women has a budget of $65,000 for this program, Mrs Radrodro added.

Fiji To Continue Assistance Towards Labour Reforms In PNG

Fiji and Papua New Guinea signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the second phase of labour related assistance. Fiji had signed an MOU for the first phase of the technical assistance to PNG on April 28th last year and the signing today is an extension to this agreement. Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment permanent secretary Mr Taito Waqa said Fijis Occupational Health and Safety reforms are well recognized by the International Labour Organisation which is using Fiji as a reform model in other Pacific Island countries. Mr Waqa said the first phase of the technical assistance from June to December, 2011 has been hailed a success. The first phase was basically to assess the need of Papua New Guinea in policy and law and then develop a legislation that was drafted and handed over to PNG last year in October, Mr Waqa said. We had a round of consultation in Fiji after which we went to PNG to present the bill to stakeholders which was agreed to in principle. They have got big multinationals there and we had to see if they agreed with the bill. We took in their comments and suggestions and we have accommodated them in line with the policies of action. The bill has gone through the third phase of the draft. Mr Waqa said the process from here would be to take the draft bill to completion before it is passed in parliament. Following this process, we have to set out the OHS management system to establish their new inspectorate and capacity building. That is what we signed today for the next 12 months, he added. Mr Waqa also highlighted the three year agreement with Kiribati, which was signed earlier this month. We are going to start work with Kiribati in July. We are not assisting Kiribati on OHS, however, it includes OHS. We will be assisting them with labour reforms which will include best practices. Well be doing consultancy work with them.

The High Court in Suva will recall the case of Former Land Force Commander Brigadier General Pita Driti on August 6 for mention. Pita Driti appeared before Justice Paul Madigan represented by defence lawyer Filimoni Vosarogo. Director of Public Prosecutions was represented by lawyer Mosese Korovou. The sitting was to check on disclosures. In an earlier court sitting in March this year the High Court had ordered State to provide former military land force commander Pita Driti with military council meeting minutes. Vosarogo said the disclosures included caution interviews and minutes of the military council meetings. The documents, he said, pertained to the fairness of the trial.

Pita Driti's Case Deferred

Vosarogo informed the court that disclosures had been received but not all they had requested as prosecution could not get all that had been requested. Justice Madigan agreed saying prosecution could only submit documents they have. State lawyer Mosese Korovou informed the court that he will present up until the pre trial conference. In the previous court sitting Justice Madigan set trial date where pre trial conference is on November 2 with trial expected to begin from November 15 till the 23. Driti has pleaded not guilty to a charge of seditious offence and a second charge of inciting to mutiny. Bail was extended and will be recalled for mention in August 6th.

No Reserved Seats For Army Or Anyone: AG

Fiji's acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum with the Ministerial Contact Group at his office in Suva Fiji's new Parliament will not have any reserved seats for anyone, including the military, says Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum. Sayed-Khaiyum was commenting on a question that was raised by Australian Foreign Minister Senator Bob Carr about the military having a seat reserved in Parliament. I was amused with Carrs question. There has been no proposal saying that there will be seats reserved for the military because no seats will be reserved for anyone, said SayedKhaiyum. He said it was also strange that Carr was asking this question and maybe the group is just trying to ascertain certain information. Sayed-Khaiyum said New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully had raised a question during their discussions about how New Zealand would help with voter registration. One way they can help us is to provide the technical support we need, said Sayed-Khaiyum.

Tobacco Manufacturer, Importers Get Licences

Fijis Ministry of Health handed over the licences for a Tobacco Control Manufacturer and three Importers at the ministrys headquarters. Health ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said British American Tobacco manufacturer will have to pay $250,000 annually while importers Tappoos, Motibhai Group and Victoria Wines will pay $150,000 annually as their licencing fee. Namotu said this was provided under the Tobacco decree 2010 which had allowed them to pay this annual licencing fee.

Olota Rokovunisei Sent To Jail For 11 Months

Former Fiji National Provident Fund chief executive Olota Rokovunisei was sent to jail for 11 months by the High Court in Suva. He was earlier found guilty of one count of extortion and one count of abuse of office brought against him by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. Justice Priyantha Fernando told Rokovunisei that the act committed was an abuse of authority and public trust. I wish to make it clear that people who abuse their power will be given a prison sentence and this will not be suspended. Justice Fernando said that Rokovunisei while employed as the FNPF general manager and chief executive accepted $22,773.18 on September 6, 2006 for performance of his duties, a reward which was beyond his proper pay and emoluments. On the second count of abuse of office, Rokovunisei authorised $20,000 per annum as responsibility allowance to the then FNPF deputy general manager Foana Nemani. Justice Fernando said the maximum penalty on both counts each is three years imprisonment. The facts of the case are that Rokovunisei accepted $22,772. 18 where the factors are that as CEO you have betrayed the trust of both the employees and the public fund that is entrusted to you. Justice Fernando took into account the mitigation factors. Mitigation for character that has been extracted is that youre 66 years married and with six children and also have a long respectable career and ill health and after four years that the case has been a mental strain. The final sentence is 11 months imprisonment and you are given 28 days to appeal. Rokovunisei was calm upon hearing the guilty verdict but sought comfort from close family members who were present at court. Assessors had earlier handed down a unanimous guilty verdict that was upheld by Justice Fernando. FICAC was represented by Shalini Sanmogan.

Fiji PM To Table Statement In Manila

Fijis Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be tabling a statement during the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governance of the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines. Bainimarama who is also the Minister of Finance is heading the Fiji delegation to the meet which is expected to have more than 4000 participants including the global media, and they will have discussions centered on growth through better governance and partnership. The meeting which is expected to end on Saturday will look at various tropical issues such as climate change, the need for urban disaster risk management, water challenges, global financial crisis and how the world will feed a population of seven billion plus population. The finance ministry in a statement said the meetings provide opportunities for member governments to interact with ADB staff, non-government organisations (NGOs), media, and representatives of observer countries and international organisations. Accompanying Bainimarama is ministry of finance permanent secretary Filimone Waqabaca, his counterpart from the ministry of strategic planning, national development and statistics Pita Wise and Governor Barry Whiteside.

Increase In Child Abuse Cases In 2010

Fiji recorded a significant increase in the number of reported child abuse cases in 2010. A total of 63 physical and 114 sexual abuse cases were reported in 2010 while there were 36 physical and 24 sexual abuse reported cases in 2009, according to a Department of Social Welfare survey across Fiji. UNICEF child specialist Salote Kaimacuata gave the details while addressing participants at the police blue light camp in Kadavu this week. Kaimacuata said while children have certain rights, it was important that the rights were not abused. She spoke about the rights and responsibilities of a child under the United Nations Convention of the Rights of a Child. When you are given those rights it doesnt mean that you can use it any way you can, you have responsibilities that accompany those rights, she said. Fiji Police launched the blue light camp in Kadavu this week with the aim of fighting crime and reducing urban drift of young people. Spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said from initial discussions, most students said they understood what the rights meant, but did not realize that they had responsibilities.

Improving Research Management

Research is an important aspect of Fijis healthcare industry and needs improvements in the governance and management of health research to be streamlined. The Health Minister, Dr Neil Sharma said the status of health research in the country needs serious discussion. He said at the national level, the Ministry of Health has strengthened its research team with medical interns being trained to undertake clinical research, as part of their internship. There is a need for ownership of data, yet sharing of this modularity must be streamlined with acknowledgment to the parties concerned. Better monitoring of Research registers to improve governance and the management processes is needed, Dr Sharma said. The Ministry of Health with its stakeholders WHO, FNU, and the FSMED Research team is conducting a three day consultation at Novotel, Lami on National Health Research to improve its research management and data sharing. The Minister said the ministry has put in place software for essential data collection analysis and to progress health in a positive direction. Our PATIS System in the clinical services of Ministry of Health and the Public Health (PISH) along with Human Research Information System (HRIS) and Financial Management Information System (FMIS) are some of the software program, Dr Sharma said.

Fijian Made Campaign Gains Momentum

Fiji Became 'Stronger' After Suspension: Kubuabola

Fiji became a strong and independent nation after its suspension from the Pacific Islands Forum Contact Group in 2009 says Minister of Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. Speaking at the welcoming reception for the Ministerial Contact group at Borron House in Suva, Kubuabola said Fiji has friends out there who have since shown great support. He said this was only possible through the Look-North Policy that was implemented by the Bainimarama government. He told the members they will get the first-hand information on the progress to the building up to the 2014 election. The members of the Forum group are Senator Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, Murray McCully, Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Ano Pala, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade & Immigration of Papua New Guinea, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, Minister of Justice of Samoa, Apisai Ielemia, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade, Tourism, Environment and Labour of Tuvalu, and Alfred Carlot, Minister for Foreign Affairs & External Trade of Vanuatu.

The Fijian Made Buy Fiji campaign has been taken to a new level with the launch of the Manufacturers Month in Lautoka. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum said todays event is of significance to the Western Division as most of the key stakeholders in Fijis manufacturing sector are based in the division. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said it is essential for Fijians to acknowledge and understand the essence of the campaign as it has numerous benefits for the country. He said the campaign ensures job security as well as a better future for generations to come. It is imperative that we all understand that if we buy Fijian products, we are not only putting a Fijian product on the shelf but we are creating jobs. We are ensuring that more money stays in Fiji and we also ensure that businesses grow. When the business grows, it pays more tax so we get more money to build roads, schools and hospitals, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted the need for business owners to invest more money in their businesses. We are trying to tell the people of Fiji that they must firstly recognize what is made in Fiji. We are also at the same time trying to tell the business people and the companies that we have got a market waiting for you. We want you to invest more money into your businesses because if you do that, you will then be able to ensure that youll be getting more people to buy your products. The minister said that because Fiji

has managed to successfully promote Fijis products internationally, this is something that local businesses must capitalize on. When people overseas see the brand and see that the product is made in Fiji, they say yes, Fiji is a nice place. Its good that a product is coming from that place since it is environmentally pristine. They pay their workers well. Its got a good quality product and that is what we are encouraging amongst businesses to follow and have good products in place. We want businesses to follow particular standards that need to be adhered to internationally. These are the things that we are trying to encourage, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum is also hopeful that the local manufacturers products would be competitively priced so that Fijians can buy more their products. We will be giving Fijian Made logos to businesses that will stamp them on their products. We now have more than 20 companies that have come forward and are now certified carriers of the Fijian Made logo. We need to be able to differentiate the authenticity of the Fijian made products and help our local businesses get more money, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum urged the business community to work closely with each other following the devastating floods that affected most of the western division. In the coming months, there will be a focus on agricultural products to enhance and encourage people in the agricultural sector to maximize benefits of the Fijian Made Buy Fiji campaign.

Increase In Student Allowance

Fijian students studying in India could not have asked for something sweeter than having their monthly allowance being subsidized by the Fiji government. It was made possible when the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama agreed to increase the students' allowance. This will see the Fiji government give an additional half of what the students are receiving per month from the Indian Government through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. While meeting most of the students from all over Fiji in New Delhi, Commodore Bainimarama said he was really concerned with the difficulties they faced when studying abroad. "I understand the problems you are facing," he told the students. "In fact I made up my decision a few days ago after I was briefed of what you go through." Commodore Bainimarama said the government would always ensure its people, 'especially the students', welfare was looked after. The students shared their difficulties with Commodore Bainimarama saying at times they were hardly left with any money in their pockets as the cost of living in India was very high. Mohammed Kutty, a former high school teacher who is pursuing his Bachelor of Law degree at University of Pune said the money problems faced by the students had a negative impact to their academic performance. "What we are getting is very little, we really appreciate the decision made by our Prime Minister," he said. "Most of us borrow from one another or rely from the money remitted from our families so we can survive." "We really struggle every day and in some cases the allowance comes in very late." "But this is good news," said Mr Kutty. Fiji High Commission first secretary Alifereti Naioko said that he had raised the issue with the ICCR officials in New Delhi but was told that that amount was across the board for all the recipients of the scholarships including those from different countries like Mongolia, Tazakistan, Uzbekistan, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Indonesia and Russia. "ICCR can't increase their scholarships," he said. Commodore Bainimarama said the difficulties faced by the students in India would make them stronger. "I can say this will make you come out stronger when you leave from here," Commodore Bainimarama said.

Removal Of Sanctions A Long Way Off - Bob Carr

The lifting of sanctions imposed on Fiji by Australia is a long way off, says Australias Foreign Minister Bob Carr. Carr, who arrived at Nausori International Airport as part of the Pacific Islands Forum ministerial contact group, said the easing of Australian sanctions is not something that will be happening soon. "Reducing sanctions - and our sanctions apply not to the people of Fiji but to members of the interim government would be several steps in the future," he said. "We need to see a robust democracy functioning in association with the rule of law. In that context we'll look at the position of sanctions." Australia also wants to see whether Fiji maintains its commitment to the consultation process prior to the proposed 2014 general election. Carr said the Forum also wants to make sure that the 2014 election is transparent and free. New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully said Fiji was at a pivotal juncture and the resumption of direct dialogue between the Forum and the Fiji government was a significant development. "I think the very fact that we are here is cause for optimism," he said. Carr told members of the media at Nausori Airport they will meet the Fiji government and representatives of civil society including academics, trade unions and non-government organisations on the constitution consultation and electoral reform process. The meetings are also expected to include discussions with deposed Prime Minister and Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua leader Laisenia Qarase, Labour Party leader and former Bainimarama Government Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, and former Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes. Carr said the visit will help to give them a better understanding of developments in Fiji from the government, civil society and other stakeholders' viewpoints. He said Australia and New Zealand are also willing to help Fiji with voter registration. Fijis Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum in a statement before the group arrived asked them to support the government's efforts to take the country to the 2014 general election. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama is in India for the International Sugar Organisation annual conference and will not be meeting the group. Fiji was suspended from the 16-nation Pacific Island Forum in 2009 after the constitution was abrogated and elections were not held that year. Australia and New Zealand have also imposed sanctions on Fiji, including cutting all military cooperation and travel bans on senior members of the government. Carr's visit is the first time an Australian foreign minister has travelled to Fiji since 2008.

No Surcharges Rule On Credit Cards Transactions

Fiji's Reserve Bank of Fiji says there should be no surcharges on credit card transactions. The RBF made the comment after it received numerous complaints on surcharges imposed by merchants. The RBF said despite the rule being in place barring surcharges, it was obvious merchants still surcharge customers. It said the rule has also been applied inconsistently by both the credit card issuers and the merchants. In view of this, the RBF has now called for a consultation on the issue and asked all stakeholders who believe that there is a need and/or otherwise for the imposition of credit card surcharges to make their submissions to justify the imposition, and/ or otherwise of these surcharges. The RBF has issued a consultation paper outlining the concerns and a discussion on the policy options going forward. It says prior to making a final decision, it intends to consult with all relevant stakeholders. Written and oral submissions should be sent to the Reserve Bank before May 31.

Statistics Show More Indo-Fijians Living In Poverty

There are more Indo-Fijians living in poverty, a survey by Fiji's Bureau of Statistics has found. According to the Household Income and Expenditure Survey, of those living below the poverty line between 20082009, 72 per cent were Indo-Fijians and 66 per cent iTaukei. Forty-five per cent of the Indo-Fijian populations living in poverty live in rural areas while 21 per cent reside in town and city areas. In contrast, 42 per cent of the povertystricken iTaukei live in rural areas and 17 per cent in urban areas. For other ethnicities, 50 per cent of the poor live in rural areas while 16 per cent live in urban areas. It was also found out that 15 per cent of Fiji's poverty stricken families live in urban areas while 37 per cent are in rural settlements and villages. Commissioner Eastern Lieutenant Colonel Netani Rika told the Eastern Division development board meeting last week a recent survey had indicated there is a big increase in poverty in the rural areas. Lt Col Rika said those below the poverty line is measured as average households of four members who earn less than $155 a week.

Teachers Association Want Retirement Age At 60

The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) is urging the government to revert the retirement age of civil servants back to 60. FTA public relation officer Netani Druavesi said the issue was raised by members during the first day of their Annual Convention in Suva. Druavesi said they are negotiating with the Ministry of Education on this issue. Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal when contacted to comment on the issue said the ministry does not control the retirement age as it is the decision of the government for all civil servants. Dr Lal said it should be brought forward to the cabinet. He said they are just following the governments instructions. Meanwhile, FTA will also send in their request to the government to revert the deduction of subscription fees from the members fortnightly pay. FTA and the Fiji Teachers Union have both joined hands in the move and want government to lift the system because the associations are not income generating but rely on the subscription fees for the upgrade and maintenance of their facilities. FTA had been deducting $7 fortnightly from the members pay which the government stopped at the beginning of this year.

Mccully Sees Positive Progress In Fiji

Election planning in Fiji is being seen as an encouraging sign that the country is moving towards democracy, Foreign Minister Murray McCully says. The Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG), which includes government ministers from a number of member countries, met this week for a summit in Suva, and said that Fiji showed signs of positive progress. Fiji has been under the control of a military regime since Commodore Frank Bainimarama seized power in a coup in 2006. The country was suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum in 2009 after failing to hold elections. Mr McCully, who chaired this week's meeting, said ministers met Fijian politicians, as well as representatives of civil society and unions, and were encouraged by what they heard. In particular, Mr McCully said the group welcomed assurances from Fiji that the process under way would lead to elections by September 2014, there would be no media restrictions in relation to the constitutional consultation process, and there would be no parliamentary seats reserved for the military. The group will provide a report to forum leaders in the coming weeks about the country's progress, and about what other steps it believes are required.

BAF Warning For Importers

Importers of produce from around the world have been warned by the Bio Security Authority of Fiji to ensure that products brought into the country are of a standard quality. BAF chief executive officer Elvis Silvestrini says they are addressing the issue of low quality goods imported in the country. This is amid growing complaints by consumers of low quality produce. One of these he highlighted was the poor quality of potatoes imported to Fiji. Silvestrini says they are now checking every bag of potatoes and not only 660 units as was the practice in the past. All consignments of potatoes are withheld and checked 100 per cent rather than the normal required inspection of 600 units only, he said. Importers of the consignments found not meeting the BAF import conditions have been asked by BAF to have their consignments treated before we release them. He added that the markets and shops have also been watched by officers and have requested retailers to remove potatoes which were rotten or of substandard quality. We are also working with our counterpart in New Zealand including the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (NZMAF) - and the importers to ensure bio security concerns are addressed and that the import conditions for potatoes are adhered to.

CWM Pediatric Unit Receives New Equipment

The Colonial War Memorial Hospital received 29 pediatric monitors from the Australian Government to assist with providing quality maternal and child health services. Through the Fiji Health Sector Support Program (FHSSP), AusAID handed over the equipments to assist health care professionals in their critical care of babies and infants. The Acting Deputy Secretary Hospital Services, Dr Meciusela Tuicakau said improving child health is an important objective of the Ministry of Health and forms part of Fijis commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The equipment received today will assist the ministry through the pediatric services in delivering the best care for our sick children. Pediatric care has grown to be one of the robust departments in clinical services and has been continuously training staff over the years on advanced tertiary care for the very sick infants/children, Dr Tuicakau said. He said the new equipments will boost staff performance and also enhance the learning process of the upcoming medical and nursing students. The Acting Head of Mission at the Australian High Commission Mr Glenn Miles said through the FHSSP, AusAIDs investment in the health of ordinary people in Fiji of $Aus25 million reiterates Australias commitment towards development. The Australian Government undertook an independent review of our Aid program and reassessed the priorities of what the purpose of our international aid is. The fundamental purpose is to help people overcome poverty and saving lives, Mr Miles said. He said the three different types of pediatric monitors with a cost of more than $FJ 129,000 will provide monitoring of children to detect life threatening conditions of critically ill children. Australia has a long history in the development of Fijis health sector through provision of high quality health care delivery.

Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum said Fiji went into the Forum Ministerial Contact Group meeting with an open mind and he hopes that countries like Australia and New Zealand know that their travel sanction policy against Fiji is ridiculous.

Sayed-Khaiyum said many people still do not come on board to take up senior positions due to the bans. The issue of sanctions was not discussed during the Contact Group visit which included New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully and Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr.

World Trade Centre Becomes Highest NY Tower

Five Arrested For Trying To Blow Up Bridge

FIVE self-described anarchists have been arrested in a plot to blow up a bridge in Cleveland, Ohio, but the public was never in any danger, the FBI says. The anarchists spent months planning several different attacks but did not realize that they were being closely monitored and had purchased inoperable explosives from an undercover FBI agent. "The individuals charged in this plot were intent on using violence to express their ideological views," Stephen Anthony, special agent in charge of the Cleveland division of the FBI, said. "The Joint Terrorism Task Force will continue to be vigilant in its efforts to detect and disrupt any terrorism threat, domestic or international." The FBI began to infiltrate the group at a protest in October after a confidential informant sent there noticed they were complaining that the rest of the people did not want to "act violently," the criminal complaint stated. In later meetings, the group of young men said they wanted to attack "corporate America and the financial system" and discussed how they could make sure people didn't think their actions were "random acts" of violence, the charging paper said. They initially plotted to distract the police with smoke grenades while knocking signs off bank buildings, but decided there weren't enough people in Cleveland willing to participate in a riot. They eventually settled on the plot to blow up a bridge that spans the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Douglas Wright, 26, Brandon Baxter, 20, and Anthony Hayne, 35, were arrested on charges of conspiracy and attempted use of explosive materials to damage physical property affecting interstate commerce. Also arrested were Connor Stevens, 20, and Joshua Stafford, 23.

The unfinished One World Trade Centre, which is being built to replace the destroyed Twin Towers at Ground Zero, is now the tallest building in New York City. Steel columns erected by workers made the frame of the Freedom Tower higher than the 381-metre high observation deck on the city's Empire State Building. The Port Authority, which owns the site, announced "a major milestone in the construction of One World Trade Centre", certifying the building would now "surpass the height of the Empire State Building, which currently is the tallest structure in New York City". Executive director Patrick Foye joked the building was so tall that "if you really crane your neck, you can see Alaska" and that, once completed, "Asia may come into view." And vice chairman Scott Rechler told a press conference "the most complex construction project in our history" had been "an act of passion and an act of patriotic duty." One World Trade Centre, already a gleaming, angular landmark on the city's skyline, will get still taller as construction winds up late next year, finally reaching 541.3 metres and 104 floors. That will make it the second-highest

building in the US, after the Willis Tower in Chicago. Not only will that dwarf the 1930s masterpiece of the Empire State Building, but it will be higher than the old Twin Towers, which both collapsed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Although the mammoth construction work to resurrect the Ground Zero area is at last nearing fruition, the project has been plagued by billions of dollars in cost overruns as well as delays, bickering over designs and worries over whether the office space will be profitable. However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg stressed the positive, underlining the city's relationship with ambitious architecture. "The New York City skyline is, once again, stretching to new heights," Mr Bloomberg said. "The latest progress at the World Trade Centre is a testament to New Yorkers' strength and resolve - and to our belief in a city that is always reaching upward. "Today our city has a new tallest building and a new sense of how bright our future is." The tallest building in the world remains Burj Khalifa in Dubai, measuring 828.1 metres.

Australian Billionaire To Build Titanic II

Police Chief's Wife Runs Over, Kills Toddler At Florida Softball Game
A US police chief's wife ran over and killed a 22-month-old boy before a softball game at a Florida high school, officials said. Pamela Bodenheimer, 51, was reversing her SUV when she accidentally hit toddler Brady Hutto at Titusville High School, as reported. The accident happened as Brady's mom was getting something out of her car and a friend offered to take the little boy to the softball field, according to Todd Hutchinson, of Titusville Police. The toddler, who was the younger brother of one of the softball players, changed his mind and had started running back to his mother when he was hit by Bodenheimer's vehicle. "It's a parent's worst nightmare," Hutchinson added. Bodenheimer, whose daughter was due to play in the game, told police she did not see the boy. Her husband, Lake Alfred police Chief Art Bodenheimer, told the newspaper his wife was "devastated", adding, "All our prayers go out to a lot of people right now." The softball game, between the Auburndale Bloodhounds and the Titusville Terriers, was canceled in the wake of the tragedy. No charges were filed, and the crash was ruled an accident, police said.

Mom Accused Of Putting Bleach In Baby's Eye

A Washington mother is accused of repeatedly putting drops of bleach into her one-year-old daughter's right eye while she had an eye infection. Jennifer Mothershead, 29, of Tacoma, pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault of a child on Monday. Police charged Mothershead last Friday. The investigation began when the child was airlifted to a Seattle hospital in May 2011 because of a serious head injury that hospital officials suspected was the result of child abuse, police said. It was also discovered the child had an eye infection. Mothershead told doctors her child's eyes had been swollen shut for a month as a result of an eye scratch that happened while she played in a barn, according to documents cited by the media. Prosecutors say hospital staff member smelled a strong odour from a dropper bottle Mothershead had brought to the hospital and laboratory tests determined it was bleach. "The staff at (the hospital) determined that the damage to the child's eyes was consistent with repeated exposure to bleach, and ruled out any possibility that the eye dropper had been merely cleaned with bleach," prosecutors said in a statement. The girl has lost sight in her right eye and is now in the custody of her father.

Clive Palmer, one of Australia's richest men, has commissioned a Chinese state-owned company to build a 21st Century version of the Titanic. The mining billionaire told Australian media that construction would start at the end of next year. It would be ready to set sail in 2016. The plan, he added, was for the vessel to be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in design and specifications, but with modern technology. Mr Palmer told Australian media that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct the ship. "It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st Century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," he said in a statement. The announcement comes just weeks after the centenary of the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic. The vessel, the largest luxury ship in its time, struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It went down on April 15, 1912, leaving more than 1,500 people dead. "Of course it will sink if you put a hole

in it,'' Mr Palmer said in response to questions from reporters on whether the Titanic replica would sink. The new vessel is scheduled to sail from London to New York in late 2016, if all goes as planned. "It is going to be designed so it won't sink,'' he added. ''But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.'' The cost of the construction is not known, a spokesman for Mr Palmer told Australian media. The mining magnate from Queensland, who has strong business relations with China, has expanded into tourism. He owns a luxury resort on the Sunshine Coast and has plans to build a fleet of luxury liners. His plan to build the Titanic replica was announced on the same day that he revealed plans, in a separate news conference, to contest the next federal election in Queensland. He told reporters that he has expressed interest in standing for Queensland's Liberal National Party (LNP), part of the conservative opposition at federal level, in the Brisbane seat of Lilley - currently held by Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan.

Suspected Skimmers Held At NZ Airport

Two suspected card skimmers have been arrested at Auckland International Airport.

Customs officials, acting on information from Immigration New Zealand profilers, found electronic equipment in the belongings of a Bulgarian man and a Romanian man who had arrived on a flight from Guangzhou. "The men could give no valid reason for coming to New Zealand," acting head of Immigration Steve McGill said. "They had limited knowledge of New Zealand and did not know the location

of the attractions they supposedly wanted to visit." Given this and the information they had, the men were denied entry and then returned to Guangzhou. Immigration NZ had stopped nine suspected Bulgarian card skimmers from entering the country in April, while a further four men who allegedly withdrew money from New Zealand accounts from a Canadian ATM after skimming cards are in custody.

Man's Arm Partially Severed In Chainsaw Attack

Police say they were called to a dispute between neighbours in Minto, just after 9.00pm (AEST) on Tuesday. Officers found a 30-year-old man with a badly injured arm and a 26-year-old man, with a missing finger. Both men have been taken to hospital and the 30-year-old was to have emergency surgery.

At Least 100 Dead In India Ferry German Man Arrested After Trying To Pay For Cab Fare With Drugs Accident
At least 100 people died when a ferry carrying around 350 passengers capsized amid high winds and torrential rain in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam. The double-decker ferry sank on the swelling Brahmaputra River in Assam. Police say at least 150 people have been rescued or swum to safety, but witnesses saw many others being swept away by the river's strong currents. Rescuers were struggling to find survivors but their efforts were hampered by high winds, torrential rains and darkness, officials said. Reports suggest strong winds and heavy rain caused the accident in the remote north-eastern state. Safety standards are generally poor in India's remote areas and overcrowding may have contributed to the disaster. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the sinking as a "tragedy". GERMAN police detained a man after he tried to pay for a taxi ride with marijuana because he was not carrying any cash, police said. Officers in the southern city of Munich found 31 pot plants in the man's flat when they accompanied him home on after the taxi driver reported him to the police. Cops also seized 353 grams (12.5 ounces) of cannabis, as well as scales and cannabis oil. The 30-year-old told police officers the plants were for his personal consumption as he did not want to rely on dealers.

Woman Caught Smuggling Cocaine In Her Hair At Dubai Airport

A woman has been arrested after attempting to smuggle 360 grams of cocaine in her hair through Dubai International Airport. Police told the newspaper that the 25-year-old African woman was arrested in early April, after airport officials became curious about her suspiciously large hairdo. The woman, whose name and nationality were not disclosed, reportedly told officials that the hairstyle was so large because of the type of glue she used to fix her hair extensions. But when officers looked at her hair more closely, they found plastic bags containing the drugs had been taped to it. Police say the woman confessed she had accepted money from a friend to smuggle the cocaine from Argentina to Johannesburg.

Former British Ambassador's Wife Attacked With Boiling Water At Kuwait Restaurant
THE wife of a former British ambassador to Kuwait suffered third-degree burns after having boiling water thrown on her in a restaurant by a suspected Islamist activist.

U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Afghanistan on Tuesday to sign an agreement charting future relations with the country, making the secret trip on the first anniversary of the killing of al Qaeda

leader Osama bin Laden. The U.S.-Afghan Strategic Partnership Agreement will set conditions for a U.S. presence there after a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of most NATO combat forces.

Dianne Wilton, whose husband Christopher Wilton served as British ambassador in Kuwait between 2002 and 2005, was dining with a member of the Gulf state's royal family and other friends when a woman entered the restaurant and grabbed a pot of scalding water. The woman proceeded to hurl the pot at Wilton's table. The boiling water hit Wilton on the neck, shoulder and back - causing her

to be taken to hospital for treatment. She was released from a Kuwaiti hospital. "She was extremely shaken up," said her husband, the former ambassador. "She's all right but traumatized that this could happen at all. The assumption is [the attacker] singled out a table where Arab men were dining with obviously Western women." The attacker managed to run from the restaurant without being apprehended.

Obese Job Applicants Face Bias - Report

FAT women are being discriminated against when applying for jobs and receive lower starting salaries than their skinny colleagues, according to a new study. Monash University, together with the University of Hawaii, examined whether a recently developed measure of antifat prejudice, the universal measure of bias (UMB), predicted workplace discrimination against obese people. Lead researcher Kerry O'Brien, from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, said the nature of the study initially was concealed from the participants to avoid biased results. Participants were shown a series of resumes that had a small photo of the supposed job applicant attached, and were asked to make ratings of the applicants' suitability, starting salary and employability. "We used pictures of women preand post-bariatric surgery, and varied whether participants saw a resume that had a picture of an obese female attached, or the same female but in a normal weight range having undergone bariatric surgery," Dr O'Brien said. "We found that obesity discrimination was displayed across all selection criteria, such as starting salary, leadership potential and likelihood of selection for the job." The higher a participant's score on the UMB, the more likely they were to discriminate against obese candidates. Dr O'Brien said one interpretation of this finding might be that we feel better about our own bodies if we compare ourselves to, and discriminate against, fatter people. "The results suggest that a belief in the superiority of some individuals over others is related to the perception that obese individuals deserve fewer privileges and opportunities than nonfat individuals," he said. He said the findings show that there is a clear need to address obesity discrimination, particularly against females, who tend to bear the brunt of anti-fat prejudice.

New $20 Bill Unveiled

The Province, Police And ICBC Team Up To Launch High Risk Driving Campaign
Awareness and enforcement focuses on urging drivers to slow down and stay focused at intersections

Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney show off the new $20 bank bill during a ceremony in Ottawa on Wednesday Soon youll have even more plastic in your wallet. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada unveiled the new $20 polymer bank notes. The bills replace paper-cotton bills that wear and tear more easily. Canada has already switched to polymer bank notes, which are more durable and harder to fake than paper money, for the $50 and $100 bills. The Conservative government announced in its 2010 budget that Canada would be switching to synthetic bills.

Prominent Vancouver Gangster Gunned Down In Drive-By Shooting

Well-known Vancouver gangster Ranjit Singh Cheema has been confirmed as the victim of a targeted hit Wednesday morning at his parents home in East Vancouver. Neighbour Jimmy Sanghara said he heard six or seven shots just before 10 a.m. There was blood everywhere. When I got there he was dead, slumped in the seat of the vehicle. Sanghara, who didnt know the victim, said it appeared Cheema was attempting to get out of the SUV when he was shot. Family and friends of Cheema began arriving at the home shortly after, and were talking to homicide investigators near the garage. Dozens of curious neighbours lined the street as police investigators began combing the area with metal detectors. Another neighbour, Manjit Bhangal, said the well-kept street is normally quiet. This is obviously very shocking to everybody, she said.

ICBC and police launched a high risk driving awareness and enforcement campaign to remind everyone that driving is one of the most complex things we do and it becomes even more challenging at intersections. Approximately 60 per cent of crashes happen at intersections in B.C. that is, 241 crashes per day and more than 51,000 people injured every year. Many driving behaviours may seem harmless, like tailgating or failing to yield the right-of-way, but the truth is they increase your risk of crashing at intersections, potentially injuring or killing yourself and others. Were asking drivers to pay attention because intersections crashes can have devastating consequences, especially when pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are involved, said Shirley Bond, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. We know these crashes can be prevented and everyone should seriously think about that. There is no excuse for taking risks that will endanger yourself and others. The campaign focuses on the behaviours that are common causes of crashes, like speeding, failure to yield, following too closely, ignoring a traffic control device and improper passing. High-risk behaviours have no place on our roadways, said Chief Constable Jamie Graham, Chair of the B.C. Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. We will be out in full-force across the province to let you know that we are serious about reducing these senseless crashes. You have to be responsible for your actions, pay attention and focus on driving. As police officers, we see the heartbreaking effects that result from bad driving behaviours, and we know how easily they can be prevented. Were launching this campaign

because we know that together we can help make our roads safer and reduce the hundreds of crashes that happen at intersections every single day in our province, said Fiona Temple, ICBCs director of road safety. Were asking you to keep your mind on the road because we want you and your family to stay safe and be able to react to the unexpected. We can all do our part to help keep our roads safer if we follow a few tips: Slow down as you approach intersections and remember that a yellow light means you should stop if you can do so safely. When making a left turn, be extra careful and always yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic. Always use your turn signal well before you make a move it helps others know what youre doing. Leave enough space between your car and the one in front of you so you have more time to react to the unexpected. Shoulder check for cyclists before turning right or pulling away from a curb and watch for oncoming cyclists before turning left. As the weather gets warmer, more motorcyclists will be hitting the road so be on the lookout, especially when turning left. Motorcyclists are hard to see and it can be difficult to judge their speed and intentions, so the safest thing to do is yield the right of way. The advertising component of the campaign focuses on the complexity of driving and the importance of paying attention to stay safe. ICBC also created a route planner to help you identify the top-five challenging intersections along the way. For more drive smart tips and information about the campaign, visit icbc.com.

Premier And Mlas Celebrate The 25Th Anniversary Of Rick Hansen's Man In Motion World Tour
More than 25 years ago, Rick Hansen set out on the Man In Motion World Tour to make a difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injuries. Today, Hansen was in the provincial capital to celebrate the anniversary of his inspiring journey around the world. "As a shining example of the power of the human spirit, Rick Hansen has touched the lives of millions across Canada and around the world," said Premier Clark. "His Man In Motion Tour showed us that anything is possible and, with the support of the Rick Hansen Foundation and other valued partners, B.C. has become the best place in the country for people with disabilities to lead healthy, active lives." The event was part of the 25th Anniversary Relay, which has been making its way across Canada in celebration of Difference Makers from coast to coast. The relay entered B.C. on March 19 and is passing through 127 communities before concluding in downtown Vancouver on May 22. Hansen - one of Canada's most decorated Paralympic athletes and an internationally known ambassador for spinal-cord research - recognized MLAs as Difference Makers in a ceremony at the legislature, acknowledging them for their commitment to creating a healthier and more inclusive British Columbia. "For 25 years, the Province of B.C. has been a partner with me on this journey and together, we are making fundamental progress towards a cure for spinal cord injury and building accessible and inclusive communities. The 25th anniversary is about honouring those who put service above self, recognizing local champions, and moving from one man in motion to many. It's an honour to recognize the spirit of all British Columbians through the sharing of the Rick Hansen commemorative medal with community leaders who represent all parts of our great province," said Hansen. In March 1985, Hansen set off from Vancouver to wheel 40,000 kilometers through 34 countries on the Man In Motion World Tour to prove the potential of people with disabilities. His 26-month journey inspired an entire nation to believe anything is possible and moved thousands to make a difference. Since 1988, his Rick Hansen Foundation has leveraged the $26 million raised during the Tour into $252 million in investments toward spinal-cord research, accessibility projects and quality-of-life initiatives.

Canadian Woman Breaks Guinness Record For Worlds Fastest Motorized Toilet
Canadian stunt woman Jolene Van Vugt was flushed with pride Wednesday after setting a new land speed record for the fastest motorized toilet. Ms. Van Vugt, a former Canadian motocross champion, steered the contraption through some early wobbles to 75 kilometers per hour in Sydney, seven kilometers more than the previous Guinness world record. Police were on hand to record the feat. I flew into Australia and came out here to jump straight on the toilet, said the 31-year-old. The record-winning contraption resembles a go-kart, but has a porcelain toilet in place of a drivers seat. Ms. Van Vugt, who is in Australia to perform at the Nitro Circus stunt show based on the hit MTV series, holds a host of world records, including being the first woman to backflip a dirt bike.

B.C. is making it possible for caterers to obtain a liquor licence, enabling catering companies to fully meet the food and beverage needs of their clients. The new legislation, introduced Tuesday, will allow caterers to provide a wider range of services to their customers. This expansion of services will make it easier for clients to have liquor service at catered events, which will not only help support the industry, but also strengthen B.C.'s tourism appeal. As well, the change will create a

Caterers To Be Licensed To Serve Alcohol

licensing framework that will allow dedicated catering businesses and existing licensed establishments - such as restaurants, hotels and conference centres - to provide liquor at catered events held at offsite locations. Currently, people hosting an event serving liquor in B.C. need to get a special occasion licence, take the Serving-it-Right course, purchase and transport the liquor and accept liability for liquor service at the event. Catering companies cannot handle these responsibilities on behalf of their clients.

Foods That Fight Acid Reflux

How To Avoid Heartburn
Turn your body into a heartburn-free zone by sticking with the following ingredients: Oatmeal Aloe vera is famous as a natural healing agent and also seems to treat acid reflux. It is available as a living plant, but the leaves or liquid forms are sometimes sold separately in groceries and health-food stores. Aloe vera can be used in recipes as a thickener and for congealing liquids. Salad Melon (pH 6.1) is good for acid reflux. However, as with bananas, a small percentage (1% to 2%) of those with acid reflux need to avoid it. Also included in the good-for-reflux category are honeydew, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Fennel Roots and greens

Oatmeal is just about the best breakfast at any-time-of-day snack. Its filling and doesnt cause reflux. Even instant oatmeal with raisins is legal because the oatmeal absorbs the acidity of the raisins. Ginger

You could do worse than to eat a salad every day. Salad is a primary meal for acid refluxes, although tomatoes and onions should be avoided, as well as cheese and high-fat dressings. Dressings that have some acid or fat can be added, but only one tablespoon (or less) - as measured, not guesstimated! Banana

Cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, and other greens are all great foods for the acid refluxer. Pretty much all of the green and the root vegetables are recommended. Celery Fennel (pH 6.9) is a great food for acid reflux and actually seems to improve stomach function. This crunchy vegetable has a unique taste - a mild licorice flavor. Sliced thin (the white bottom part), it makes a healthy salad with arugula and baby spinach. Its also great in chicken dishes, and makes a fine snack if you love the taste. Chicken and turkey

In moderation, ginger is one of the best foods for acid reflux. It has been used throughout history as an antiinflammatory and as a treatment for gastrointestinal conditions. Ginger root can easily be peeled, sliced, diced, or shaved using a grater. You can use it while cooking or add it to smoothies. Aloe vera

Celery has almost no calories because of its high water content, and is a good choice if you have acid reflux. It is also an appetite suppressant and excellent source of roughage. Parsley

Bananas make a great snack, and at pH 5.6, theyre usually great for people with acid reflux. However, about 1% of acid refluxes find that their condition is worsened by bananas. So keep in mind that what works for most people may not work for you. Melon

It can be boiled, baked, grilled, or sauted (but not fried!), and you must remove the skin, which is high in fat. Fish and seafood It should be baked, grilled, or sauted, never fried. Shrimp, lobster, and other shellfish are also fine. Wild fish, not the farm-raised variety, is recommended.

Fiji Media: Crying Need For A Home-Grown Model For A Developing Democracy
I wish to mark this World Media Freedom Day (3 May) with reference to a fruitful Pacific Islands News Associating (PINA) meeting held in Fiji earlier this year and need for Fiji for its own home-grown model of media. Last PINA meeting in Fiji heralded a great future for a united media organisation in the Pacific. When time is ripe, Pacific people have a lively scrap, but there are occasions when they unite. This was one such occasion where the hitherto divided media people in the Pacific buried their hatchets and came out as a united force. Veteran Tongan publisher, Kalafi Moala led that conciliatory approach. It was timely other Pacific countries appreciated Fijis unique problems and why it was not buying wholesale the western concept of media freedom. In light of Media Industry Development Decree 2010 and subsequent sale of The Fiji Times to Motibhai group, I was pleasantly surprised to be approached by a Fiji reporter on supposed rumours that former publisher of Daily Post, Thakur Ranjit Singh was to be appointed publisher of the new Fiji Times. I would have considered the position had I been approached. This would have been additionally appropriate as I had just completed a research on the content analysis of this newspaper which revealed its partisan approach and its contribution to fall of Chaudhry government in 2000. The Fiji Times was in Fiji a decade before the arrival of my forbears, the first Indian coolies in 1879. Successive academics and writers have recorded heart-tearing atrocities against defenceless, innocent and vulnerable indentured labourers. However, as a tool of colonisers, chiefs, elites and businesses, the Fiji Times never saw any human rights breaches as seen and reported by numerous others. Generally, free media in civilised democracies are seen as the last bastion of democracy. However, we have a unique and unprecedented case in Fiji where its oldest and most powerful media, the Fiji Times, remains accused of doing complete the opposite - contributing to political instability and fall of democracy. As its home-grown and overseas-educated publisher, I would have been in a distinct position to exorcise its old ghosts and past evils. Just weeks ago, I was again pleasantly surprised to be approached by a final year journalism student from University of the South Pacific (USP), seeking my insight on media freedom and the model suited for Fiji, in light of my research. This made my day, as at least somebody in Fiji was interested in my research and the failings of unsuitable western-style conflict journalism. My research had shown that Fiji as a Third World country had media which was trying to emulate a First World press. As a multiracial country with a lopsided racial composition of media gatekeepers and newsrooms, Fiji was not ready for First World media freedom. Since its independence in 1970 and notably after Rabukas coup in 1987, Fiji media failed to live to the expectations of a free media. Fiji media owners, editors and reporters failed to unite a racially -fragmented developing nation. Bruce Hill of Radio Australia who had attended the last PINA conference in Deuba, was unpleasantly surprised to see he had no scrap to report on, and hence subsequently went on agenda-setting of discrediting PINA, ably supported by Dr Marc Edge, coordinator of the School of Journalism at USP. Perhaps Dr Edge needs to take a lecture from Professor David Robie, head of Pacific Media Centre and former head of journalism at USP, on peace journalism, on better understanding of press in the Pacific, non-suitability of western-style conflict journalism in Fiji and how to utilise the potential capability of USPs journalism school. Dr Marcs assertion that a form of development communication was not suitable for Fiji shows his lack of depth about underlying media problems in Fiji and the Pacific. The Fiji Model of Development Journalism Only after governments media controls did media come in line from its habit of sensational divisive stories of racial conflicts. Multiracial Fiji, rife with racial conflicts and political opportunism, needs a form of development journalism that reports on positive people stories that unite us rather than the divisive ones. Change is difficult to implement at newsroom levels, therefore it has to commence in journalism schools where budding journalists are exposed to issues in cross-cultural reporting. They are trained to appreciate the importance of widening the focus of journalism to the development role of journalists in a multicultural society. They are taught to reflect sensitivity to cultural and political factors in reporting. Interaction with people and reporting from their point of view and perspectives provides better understanding of community, their needs and aspirations. My research findings show how an irresponsible overseas-owned press failed in this respect, contributing to political instability in Fiji. Fiji needs a home-grown model of media. History and research show that one-size-fits-all is not an option. Reporters have to feel part of the community where they change as well as bring change. They are not mere neutral observers who remain unmoved and unchanged by what they see and write. They are medium of change through informing people. In other words, this model of journalism empowers people where assumption is that well informed citizens are well equipped to exercise their rights and duties as citizens in meaningful ways. Fiji media lacked this principle. The Fiji model would require journalists to place greater emphasis on inculcating multiracialism rather than freedom of expression. In promoting fairness, justice and an understanding of crosscultural relations, the journalist would indulge in self-censorship, and use their position to encourage and promote social andeconomic change that leads to a multicultural and economically developed society. Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, in 1960s and 70s looked at journalists as government partners in nation building, and this is the model which we need to emulate in Fiji. It is not necessary for Fiji to copy unsuitable models that we have in developed countries. We need tried models in developing multiracial countries which practised controlled journalism. Fiji media fraternity, media educators and government need to discuss the best model suited for Fijis peaceful future and political stability. Since the First World model let us down, there is a crying need for a home-grown model that suits and addresses Fijis unique situation.

Tips For Getting Kids To Drink More Milk

Milk is one of the most nutritious choices that kids can make at home or at school. It's a natural, nutrient-packed food that is a "good" or "excellent" source of nine essential nutrients that growing children need for good health and strong bones. Here are easy tips to follow and ensure your kids get the three servings of milk they need each day. 1. Serve milk ice-cold, the way kids like it, between 35-40 degrees F. Pour it right before serving and promptly return the container to the refrigerator so the milk maintains its fresh taste. 2. Be a role model. When children see you drink milk, they are more likely to drink it, too. 3. Serve milk at meals. Set expectations ahead of time that milk is the beverage of choice at meal times. 4. Serve flavored milk. Kids love it, and ounce for ounce it has the same nutrients as unflavored milk. 5. Stock the fridge with single-serve containers of white and flavored milk for grab n go. 6. Serve milk in special glasses and with a straw. Let older kids use mix-ins to create a new milk flavor. 7. Let children use a straw to drink the milk left in the bowl after finishing their cereal. 8. Order low-fat flavored milk in kid-friendly, single-serve containers instead of soda when eating out. 9. Remind children to drink milk with cchool lunch. Studies show that when children drink milk at lunch, they have higher intakes of several critical nutrients, including calcium, zinc and vitamin A. 10. Send milk money and have children buy milk when they take their lunch to school. 11. Ask if your child's school has milk program - ice-cold milk served in a variety of flavors, in kid-friendly, plastic packaging, on the school meal line. If not, talk to the school nutrition director. Research shows that when the school milk program is available, children take and drink more milk. 12. Remember that children eat first and foremost for taste. If your child prefers whole or reduced-fat milk, cut fat elsewhere in the diet and gradually switch to low-fat or fat-free milk.

People suffering from bowel cancer who take aspirin daily could cut their chance of dying from the disease by about one-third, a decade-long study has said.
The study in the British Journal of Cancer looked at 4,500 bowel cancer patients living in the Netherlands, as reported. All the bowel patients took a low dose of aspirin -- 80 mg or less a day. This dose is already recommended for people with heart disease. Evidence suggests aspirin might prevent certain cancers from developing in the first place. Some research also suggests aspirin might work as a cancer therapy -- that slows down or prevents cancer's spread. But the experts said it was too soon to start routinely offering it for bowel cancer. The drug can have unpleasant and dangerous side effects, causing irritation of the stomach lining and internal bleeding. In the study, a quarter of the patients did not use aspirin, a quarter only took aspirin after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the remaining half took aspirin both before and after their diagnosis.

Daily Aspirin Cuts Bowel Cancer Eating Dark Chocolate May Help Keep Heart Healthy Death Risk
Consuming dark chocolate in moderate quantities may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, a new study has revealed.
Most of the patients on aspirin had been taking it to prevent cardiovascular disease-related problems like heart attack. It was found that taking aspirin for any length of time after diagnosis cut the chance of dying from bowel cancer by 23 percent. The patients who took a daily dose of aspirin for at least nine months after their diagnosis cut their chance of dying from the disease by 30 percent. Taking aspirin only after bowel cancer had been detected had a bigger impact on reducing mortality compared to when aspirin was taken before and after diagnosis -- reducing death risk by 12 percent. "Our work adds to growing evidence that aspirin not only can prevent cancer from occurring but if it is there it can help prevent it spreading," said lead researcher Gerrit-Jan Liefers, of the Leiden University Medical Centre. He, however, said aspirin should not be seen as an alternative to other treatments, such as chemotherapy. Chocolate is a great source of myriad substances that scientists think might impart important health benefits. For instance, it contains compounds called "flavanols" that appear to play a variety of bodily roles including those related to their potent antioxidant and antiinflammatory actions. Many large-scale human studies have documented a statistical correlation between flavanol intake and risk for cardiovascular disease. And animal studies suggest that this relationship may be due to the physiologic effects that flavanols have on chronic inflammation, blood vessel health, and circulating lipid levels. However, few controlled human intervention studies have been conducted to test the direct effect of chocolate consumption on these variables. To help fill this knowledge gap, researchers at San Diego State University tested their hypothesis that chocolate, in particular dark chocolate which contains higher levels of flavanols than milk chocolate may protect against the risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure, blood flow, and improving blood lipid levels. In this prospective, controlled human intervention study, 31 fortunate subjects were assigned randomly to consume either a daily serving (50 grams) of either regular dark chocolate (70 percent cocoa), dark chocolate (70 percent cocoa) that had been overheated or "bloomed," or white chocolate (0 percent cocoa). The subjects were asked to consume the chocolate for 15 days. Blood pressure, forearm skin blood flow, circulating lipid profiles, and blood glucose levels were recorded at the beginning and end of the study. When compared to participants assigned to the white chocolate group, those consuming either form of dark chocolate had lower blood glucose and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL, the "bad" form) levels coupled with higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL, the "good" form) The researchers concluded that dark chocolate may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving glucose levels and lipid profiles. However, they cautioned that-although habitual dark chocolate consumption may benefit one's health by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease-it must be eaten in moderation because it can easily increase daily amounts of saturated fat and calories. "We had great compliance with our study subjects because everybody wanted to eat chocolate. We actually had to tell them not to eat more than 50 grams a day," the authors commented. The group reports that it is planning follow-up studies involving more subjects and a longer duration of chocolate consumption.

Eating Berries Can Help Keep Your Brain Sharp In Old Age
A high intake of flavonoid rich berries, such as strawberries and blueberries, can delay memory decline in older women by 2.5 years.
This is the conclusion of a new study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). "What makes our study unique is the amount of data we analyzed over such a long period of time. No other berry study has been conducted on such a large scale," explained Elizabeth Devore, a researcher in the Channing Laboratory at BWH, who is the lead author on this study. "Among women who consumed 2 or more servings of strawberries and blueberries each week we saw a modest reduction in memory decline. This effect appears to be attainable with relatively simple dietary modifications," she said. The research team used data from the Nurses' Health Study-a cohort of 121,700 female, registered nurses between the ages of 30 and 55who completed health and lifestyle questionnaires beginning in 1976. Since 1980, participants were surveyed every four years regarding their frequency of food consumption. Between 1995 and 2001, memory was measured in 16,010 subjects over the age of 70 years, at 2-year intervals. Women included in the present study had a mean age of 74 and mean body mass index of 26. Findings show that increased consumption of blueberries and strawberries was associated with a slower rate of memory decline in older women. A greater intake of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids was also associated with reduced memory decline. Researchers observed that women who had higher berry intake had delayed memory decline by up to 2.5 years. "We provide the first epidemiologic evidence that berries appear to slow progression of memory decline in elderly women," noted Dr. Devore. "Our findings have significant public health implications as increasing berry intake is a fairly simple dietary modification to reduce memory decline in older adults," she added.

Japanese Harley Washes Up On Canadian Beach

A Harley Davidson motorcycle from Japan has washed up on an island off the coast of British Columbia, after being swept into the Pacific by last year's tsunami. Japanese authorities are now trying to trace the bike's owner. The media reported the Harley Davidson motorcycle was found on a remote beach on Graham Island, off Canada's west coast. The rusted bike was lodged in what appeared to be the back of a moving van. The motorcycle's licence plate shows it is registered in Miyagi Prefecture, the region hardest hit by the Japanese tsunami almost 14 months ago. The Japanese consulate in Vancouver is now trying to find out who owns the bike and whether they are still alive.

Us Man Forgotten In Cell Drank Urine

AN American college student whom federal drug agents forgot and left in a holding cell for five days without food, water or access to a toilet says he drank his own urine to survive. Daniel Chong also said that he bit into his glasses to break them and tried to use a shard to scratch "Sorry Mom" into his arm, according to the newspaper U-T San Diego. The 24-year-old University of California, San Diego, engineering student was swept up as one of nine suspects in an April 21 drug raid that netted 18,000 ecstasy pills, other drugs and weapons. Chong said federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents told him he would be let go. One agent even promised to drive him home from the DEA field office in Kearny Mesa, he said. Instead, he was returned to a holding cell to await release. DEA spokeswoman Amy Roderick said he was accidentally left there. Chong said he could hear the muffled voices of agents outside his five-by-10foot windowless cell and the door of the next cell being opened and closed. He kicked and screamed as loud as he could, but apparently, his cries for help went unheard. "I had to recycle my own urine," he said. "I had to do what I had to do to survive." When he was found on April 25, he was taken to a hospital and treated for cramps, dehydration and a perforated lung - the result of ingesting the broken glass. "When they opened the door, one of them said, 'Here's the water you've been asking for'," Chong said. "But I was pretty out of it at the time." Chong also ingested a white powder DEA agents said was left in the cell accidentally and later identified as methamphetamine. The agency hasn't commented on Chong's claim that he was without basic necessities for days. Chong's lawyer, Eugene Iredale, said he plans to file a claim against the federal government, and if it is denied he will proceed with filing a federal lawsuit.

US Man Robert Dewey Cleared Of Murder After 16 Years

Robert "Rider" Dewey always said he was innocent A US man who has spent more than 16 years in prison has been freed after new DNA evidence cleared his name. Robert Dewey was sentenced to life for the rape and murder of a woman found strangled with a dog leash in Palisade, Colorado, in 1994. But a court has now found him innocent, with the judge saying his exoneration marked a "historic day". Prosecutors say improved DNA techniques have led them to a new suspect, who is currently serving life. Following his release, Mr Dewey met his girlfriend - whom he formed a relationship with by correspondence while in prison - for the first time. he said. Mr Dewey was convicted of the rape and murder of 19-year-old Jacie Taylor, whose partially clothed body was found in her bathtub in June 1994. He always maintained his innocence, saying as he was convicted that the real killer was still at large. Advanced DNA tests cleared him and also led to an arrest warrant being issued for Douglas Thames, who is currently serving a life sentence for a rape and murder committed in 1989.

"Not perfect"

Fresh start

Outside court, he inhaled smoke from a burning sprig of sage, which he said was a Native American custom, and said he had a lot to catch up on. He said he intended to begin his new life by going for a meal with his mother, stepfather and girlfriend. Robert "Rider" Dewey also said he wanted to ride his motorcycle again. "As long as it's in the wind, I'm happy,"

Freeing Mr Dewey, Mesa County District Judge Brian Flynn said: "Mr Dewey spent 6,219 days of his life incarcerated for a crime he did not do. This is a reminder to the entire system that it's not perfect." Speaking after the hearing, Mr Dewey said he was not angry about his incarceration. "What good would it do to me? I get to step outside there, touch a tree, get a dog and kiss my girl," he said. But he said more cases should be reviewed, adding: "Who else is out there?"

Zoo Elephant Takes Up The Harmonica

You'll never mistake her for Bob Dylan, but when Shanthi the elephant jams on her harmonica, she's more than just blowin' in the wind. The 36-year-old Asian elephant at the National Zoo in Washington, DC, is a giant-size musical prodigy, tooting away on a harmonica and horn with her trunk and making up songs as she goes along. "She likes to tap on things with the tip of her trunk. She likes to flap her ears against things that make noise. She likes to rub her leg against brushes and repeat that noise," elephant keeper Debbie Flinkman said. Her compositions are lusty and gusty as Shanthi, the mother of a 10-yearold calf, figures out how to make different sounds by manipulating the instruments with her trunk. Asian elephants, which are endangered in the wild, are known to be artistically inclined, with some in captivity taking up painting, as reported.

Brad Pitt Oversees Wedding Plans

Hollywood star Brad Pitt is reportedly personally working out the details of his wedding to Angelina Jolie this summer because he wants the ceremony to be perfect.
Pitt and Jolie plan to tie the knot at a private chapel on their 35 million pounds estate in southern France. The couple is said to have spent millions refurbishing Chteau Miraval, their 35room retreat near the village of Correns. Brad's been doing extensive renovation and is using a specialist in chateau restoration. He has spent over 10 million pounds already. Now he's offering hefty bonuses to workers to complete it by summer, as reported. He's even trying to organise an aeroplane landing site in the grounds for guests to come in by private jet but that's proving rather tricky, what with permits and no-fly zones, said the source. Pitt wants all the food and drink for the reception to be locally produced and has been very involved with the menu. Brad's been tasting and looking up French dishes for weeks. He wants the perfect menu and, of course, the perfect wine to accompany it. That is all going to be locally sourced, too, said the source. Brad has asked Jolie's brother James Haven to officiate the ceremony as minister.

Ajay Devgan Is The New 'Hulk'

Ajay Devgan is taking his role of a wrestler in his upcoming action comedy Bol Bachchan a bit too seriously. The star has been displaying his physical strength to the unit folks, which has earned him a new nickname, the Hulk. He even lifted a 50 kilos weight as a display of strength. Ajay plays the character of pehalwan Prithviraj Raghuvanshi in Rohit Shetty's film. During its ongoing shooting schedule in Wai, near Panchgani, the actor shocked the unit by lifting a traditional akhada equipment for a particular scene. Known as the ballam, it weighs around 50 kilos and is used by pehalwans in desi akhadas as part of their training and workouts. A source said, "A particular action scene required Ajay Devgan to lift the 50 kilo ballam like the pehalwans do. The director had kept a lighter one on hand, which weighed much less than the original for the shot. However, he insisted on using the real ballam as he wanted the shot to look perfect. Due to his fit physique, he managed to lift it and pulled the shot off. Ever since, unit folks have been referring him as the Hulk." Fitness trainer Prashant Sawant under whom Devgan has been working out is accompanying the actor for the shoot. Adds the source, "He is keen to look all beefed up on screen for the film and has been training both mornings and evenings. Even just before giving the shots, he works out to look all bulked up on the screen. He has been taking the hulk title seriously. He is strictly avoiding the intake of carbohydrates during the shoot schedule." Another source said, "As Ajay Devgan is playing a wrestler in the film he is living up to his strong, tough character." During his last action film Singham, the star was referred to as lion, as his character Bajirao Singham growled and roared on the screen. B-Town's other bodybuilding enthusiast Salman Khan had stated on his microblogging site at the time, "Oye teri ! Baap re baap. Superb Ajay's body is looking. Too good... Bajirao Singham ne kya body banieeeeee. Kamaal karte ho yaar Devgan." Wonder what Salman will have to say about Ajay's new Hulk look now.

Amitabh Bachchan Flying To LA For Treatment

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is flying to Los Angeles for treatment. Post surgery in February, Big B has been experiencing abnormality in health. Few times he tweeted about his pain. A source said, It was the first time since the operation in February that Bachchan saab felt such severe pain and had to go for a CT scan soon afterwards. Big B has not committed to any film till he returns from treatment. It is believed that Mr Bachchan is not doing any film before September as he`s going to Los Angeles, in May-June, where he will undergo a few tests and the required treatment to be sure, the source added. The only film that Amitabh Bachchan however committed before September is Rohit Shettys film Bol Bachchan which stars his son Abhishek and Ajay Devgan. That`s also because Abhishek is acting in the film and has a very strong role in it. And Ajay, who`s producing it, is like family. Besides, it`s not going to be stressful as Bachchan saab`s part will be shot in just a couple of days, said the source. The actor has many projects in the pipeline. He has 'Sarkar 3', Shoojit Sircar's film and then KBC 6.

Bollywood Actress Achala Sachdev Dies

Yesteryear actress Achala Sachdev, who featured in the popular song Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen from the film Waqt, has died following a prolonged illness. She was 91. For the last seven months, the actress was bed-ridden at the Poona Hospital. "She passed away due to respiratory failure. She was bed-ridden for about six months after she suffered a cerebrovascular (brain attack)," said Sachdev's physician Vinod Shah, who tended to her for more than seven months. Sachdev is survived by son Jytoin, who is in the US and would be going to Pune for the last rites, Shah said. Sachdev, who was staying in Pune for several years, had broken her leg after she fell down in her house about six months ago. She was treated but four days later she suffered a brain infarction in which she lost her vision and movements of upper and lower limbs. Since then, she was being treated at the Poona Hospital and Research Centre, Shah said. Born in Peshawar, Sachdev, who acted in around 150 films, made her film debut with Fashionable Wife (1938). Her most memorable role was as Balraj Sahani's wife in the 1965 blockbuster Waqt, where she was part of the legendary song Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen. She was also a part of films like Prem Pujari, Mera Naam Joker, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Andaz. More recently, she played Kajol's grandmother in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Amitabh Bachchan's mother in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. She was last seen in Hrithik Roshan starrer Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002).

Asha Parekh
Baaje Payal, Kora Kagaz and a comedy Dal Mein Kaala. She was the president of the Cine Artistes' Association from 1994 to 2000. Asha was the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) of India. She held the post from 1998 to 2001 for which she received no salary but plenty of controversy for censoring films and for not giving clearance to Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth. Later, she became the treasurer of the Cine and Television Artists Association (CINTAA) and also was later elected to be one of its office bearers. Asha stopped acting in 1995 to pursue directing and producing television serials, but her acting accomplishments were not forgotten as she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. And she has continued to receive other Lifetime Achievement Awards: Kalakar Award in 2004; International Indian Film Academy Awards in 2006; Pune International Film Festival Award and Ninth Annual Bollywood Award (2007) in Long Island, New York. She received the Living Legend Award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI). Asha Parekh (October Early life

2, 1942) is a Bollywood actress, director, and producer. She was one of the top stars in Hindi films from 1959 to 1973.

Asha Parekh was born into a middleclass Gujarati family in Mahuva, Gujarat, India to a Hindu father who was from Paldi near Pirana, Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Muslim mother, and her religious upbringing involved worshipping Sai Baba. Her mother enrolled her in Indian classical dance classes at an early age.

Career

Parekh started her career as a child artist under the screen name Baby Asha Parekh in the film Aasmaan (1952). Famed film director Bimal Roy saw her dance at a stage function and cast her at the age of twelve in Baap Beti (1954). The film's failure disappointed her and even though she did a couple more child roles, she quit to resume her schooling. At sixteen she decided to try acting again and make her debut as a heroine, but she was rejected from Vijay Bhatt's Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) in favour of actress Ameeta, because the filmmaker claimed she was not star material. The very next day, film producer Subodh Mukherjee and writer-director Nasir Hussain cast her as the heroine in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) opposite Shammi Kapoor which made her a huge star. The film also led to a long and fruitful association with Hussain. He went on to cast her as the heroine in six more of his films: Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966),

Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969), and Caravan (1971). She also did a cameo role for his film Manzil Manzil (1984). He also got her involved in distribution of films for 21 years, starting with Baharon Ke Sapne (1967). She was primarily known as a glamour girl/excellent dancer/tomboy in most of her films, until director Raj Khosla gave her a serious image by casting her in tragedienne roles in three of her favourite films: Do Badan (1966), Chirag (1969), and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). Director Shakti Samanta gave her more dramatic roles in her other favourite films, Pagla Kahin Ka and Kati Patang (1970), the latter earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Many important directors repeated her several times in their films, such as Vijay Anand, Mohan Segal and J.P. Dutta. Asha acted in her mother tongue Gujarati by starring in three films at the height of her fame in Hindi films, the first film being Akhand Saubhagyavati (1963), which became a huge hit. She also acted in some Punjabi films and a Kannada film Sharavegada Saradara released in 1989. After her days as a leading lady ended, she took on supporting roles as bhabhi (sister-in-law) and mother, but she called this the "awkward phase" of her career. So she stopped acting in films, and her friends recommended that she become a television director. She took their advice and became a television director in the early 1990s with a Gujarati serial Jyoti. She formed a production company Akruti and produced serials like Palash ke Phool,

Personal life

Asha has remained unmarried, claiming that her reputation of being unapproachable made people hesitate in asking for her hand in marriage. There were rumours that she was romantically involved with her married director Nasir Hussain. In her later years, Asha said that she had a longtime boyfriend but declined to elaborate on the relationship, only stating that "it was nice while it lasted." She said she hadn't seen Nasir Hussain the last year of his life, as he became reclusive because of his wife's death, but she did speak to him the day before he died in 2002. Today, she concentrates on her dance academy Kara Bhavan and the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santa Cruz, Mumbai, named in her honour because of her many humanitarian contributions.

Filmography

Asha Parekh has acted in over 50 films. Aasmaan (1952) (as Baby Asha Parekh) Dhobi Doctor, Baap Beti (1954)

What Happens If I File My Taxes Wrong?

for the previous tax year. If you make errors in your tax return, miss the tax filing date or break other tax rules, you may be subject to a variety of penalties. Errors in a Tax Return If you file a tax return on time but your return contains numerical or mathematical errors, it can affect the amount of tax you owe. If the CRA finds an error in your return, it may recalculate the amount of tax you owe and assess additional taxes against you. These tax assessments may occur months or even years after filing a tax return. If an error in your return results in additional tax, you may be charged interest and/or penalties on the additional taxes for the time that the tax has gone unpaid. How to change your return If you need to make a change to any return you have sent to CRA, do not file another return for that year. You should wait until you receive your notice of assessment before requesting any change to a return that has not been processed. You can only request a change to a return for a tax year ending in any of the 10 previous calendar years. For example, a request made in 2012 must relate to the 2002 or a later tax year to be considered. By Internet You can make changes yourself to your return online. To access our electronic service, log on to My Account and select the Change my return option. You can then enter and submit any changes to your most recent return, or to your returns of the previous two years, and they will be sent directly to our processing systems. For example, you may want to increase a deduction you claimed or add information from a slip you received after you sent us your income tax return. Late Filing If you fail to meet the tax filing deadline you may be subject to penalties. According to the CRA, if you miss the fling deadline, and you owe additional taxes, you must pay a late filing penalty that usually amounts to five percent a month for five months. In addition, if you fail to pay the full amount of your tax liability by the due date, you will owe 5% percent of the total tax liability and accrued interest each month until you pay the tax. Tax Evasion Tax evasion is deliberately making errors in a tax return or avoiding the payment of taxes. For instance, if you do contract work on the side to make extra money, you must report that income on your tax return. Failure to do so may be considered tax evasion. The CRA states that fraudulent tax returns may be cause for criminal investigation and imprisonment as well as civil penalties.

MohammedYasin, CGA
In the Canada, individuals must file individual income tax returns with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) each year to pay their tax liability or receive refunds for overpayment of taxes. Tax returns are due on April 30 each year

Spring-Cleaning Tips
De-gunk the Dishwasher

Continued from last week

Yes, your dishwasher does need to be cleaned from time to time. Remove the utensil holders and racks. Check them for stuck-on food bits and then wipe down. Grab a handful of paper towels and carefully press them onto the base of the washer to pick up any shards, bones, and metal or food gunk. Add 2 cups of vinegar to the bottom and turn the machine on to Energy or Low Wash. Stop the machine in midwash, so the vinegar can set on the bottom and work. Let it stand for about 20 minutes, then turn on to finish cycle. When done, wipe out the inside.

Here's an easy way to wipe out microwave grime: Place inside a 4-cup large microwave-safe bowl that contains 1 cup of water and a choppedup lemon, lime or orange or several tablespoons of vinegar. Turn on High for several minutes or until the solution boils and the window is steamy. You must let it sit to cool for 15 minutes before opening the door. Remove and wipe out inside. Clean the rubber gasket around the door with a sponge dampened with water only. If the window is greasy, clean with a mixture of half vinegar and half water, then dry.

Quick-Clean Your Oven

Zap Out Grime

Remove the racks and drip pans, and clean them with a damp paper towel. Wipe down all surfaces inside your oven. If you see a small bit of burnedon gunk, remove with a nonabrasive scrubber. Use a scrub brush to clean the racks, dry, and put back in. Hint: If something spills over while baking, pour table salt on it, and when the oven is cool, you will have a much quicker cleanup. Give the oven window a good rubdown with vinegar and water.

Go through your towel and utensil drawers one by one. Make it your goal to do just one a day unless you have a little more time to spare. Check your dishtowels for any that are torn, burned, or stained beyond attractiveness, and use as cleaning rags. Remember to keep an eye out for linen sales, and buy new towels when they are on sale. When going through your utensil drawer ask yourself: Do I really need four slotted spoons or spatulas? What about those old, stained, or broken utensils that you never use? They take up space, and your time digging through the drawers. Toss them out.

positions to help prevent wear and tear. Clean the wooden surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth using water only or the appropriate furniture cleaner or polish. To quick-clean your bookshelves, use a microfiber cloth or a clean paint or makeup brush to dust the tops and sides of the books and then the shelves. If you have more time, remove the books and use the upholstery attachment of the vacuum to dust them. Large, heavy books should be placed flat, not upright. While you are doing this, go through them to see if there are books you can donate or pass on to friends.

Refresh the Family Room

Today we're moving into the family room and tackling your couches and chairs. First, remove all of the cushions and vacuum the furniture as well as the floor underneath. Then use the upholstery attachment to dust both sides of the cushions and all pillows. Fluff cushions and replace in different

The longtime standard-bearer among compact sport sedans remains the BMW 3-Series; but one of the other models that enthusiasts should put on their shortlist--and might actually end up liking better--is the Infiniti G37 Sedan. With excellent steering, dynamics, and poise, along with strong powertrain performance from its 328-horsepower V-6 and six- and seven-speed transmissions, the G37 can provide a sense of satisfaction that's usually relegated to track-ready sports cars--while providing enough practicality to pinch-hit for family duty. With its coupe-like profile, the G37 remains one of the best-looking sport sedans, in any case. With clean sheetmetal and neat proportions, it follows a gently contoured look yet has an aggressive form. The new G25, which was introduced last year, is nearly identical from the outside, save some badging differences. Inside, both have a cockpit layout that's way more sports-car-influenced than other German sport sedans, with a low seating position and low center console between contoured bucket seats. The 2012 Infiniti G37 is one of the most responsive, communicative, and fun-to-drive sport sedans in its class. Infiniti's 3.7-liter V-6 is a little too raucous for some luxury-performance tastes--and not nearly as smooth as BMW's excellent turbocharged six-but it has enough muscle to satisfy rabid performance enthusiasts. A base G25 model gets a 218-hp, 2.5-liter V-6 that's smooth, by most accounts, but doesn't give nearly as strong of a performance kick. Shift quality with the seven-speed automatic transmission in the G37 Sedan (the only transmission in the G25) is somewhat lumpy and indecisive in gentle driving, but it

becomes snappy and smooth when accelerating hard. That said, the G is also quite possibly the best-handling sport sedan, price no object. Even on less-than-perfect surfaces, the suspension is hard to fluster and brakes are stout. In particular, the G sedans manage to get steering feel just right; the quick-ratio system unwinds smoothly, loads evenly, and transmits some surface feedback, as a good sport sedan should. As much as performance and dynamics are a strength for the Infiniti G Sedans, their seating, cabin space, and refinement in general are all weak links. The G Sedan's interior feels sporty and premium but not at all lavish. Fit and finish are good, but there's a lot of noise, vibration, and coarseness, from the road and from the engine. The G Sedan rides more like a sport coupe, too, jittery but not downright jarring. In addition to the three models of the 2012 Infiniti G37Journey, Sport, and G37x AWDthe G25 is offered in Base, Journey, and G25x guises. With the G25 you drop 110 hp and lots of torque, but not much else. Across either model, standard equipment includes leather upholstery, power front seats, automatic climate control, a sixspeaker audio system, and XM satellite radio. Journey models add Bluetooth, a rearview monitor, heated seats and mirrors, and dual-zone climate control. Adaptive Front Lighting and the Intelligent Cruise Control are optional and include a Preview Braking safety feature. An audiophile Infiniti Studio on Wheels system by Bose is optional, as is an optional next-generation hard-drivebased navigation system with higherresolution screen, Zagat restaurant ratings and reviews, XM Weather and XM NavTraffic, and live rerouting.

How To Save Money At The Petrol Pump

MOST of us drive into the servo, slam the nozzle into the filler neck, squeeze the trigger and get back on the road as fast as we can. We all know life is busy and getting busier by the day but we could be losing out by being in such a hurry when we fill up. Get more for the bucks we spend on fuel: * Fuel is stored in underground tanks at service stations and the colder the ground, the denser the fuel. So filling up earlier in the day means you're getting more for your dollar than you are later in the day when the ground is warmer and the fuel has had a chance to expand. Buying fuel in the afternoon or early evening will leave you shortchanged on every litre of fuel you buy. * Use the lowest, or slowest, setting on the pump nozzle. Using the slowest rate minimizes the vapors created during filling and that means there's more fuel going into your tank. * Fill your tank when it's half full and there is less air space above the petrol in the tank than when the petrol level is lower. This way, there is less loss through evaporation. * Don't fill up if you see a tanker delivering fuel at a service station. The petrol in the underground tank can be stirred up as the fresh fuel is pumped in, and the muck on the bottom of the tank could be stirred up and pumped into your tank. Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 Prepare To Open 2012 PDL Campaign

Ben Fisk (pictured), who showed great attacking prowess in the latter part of last season. Another player who will likely also see time in the PDL is striker Caleb Clarke, the Caps most recent MLS signing. Though the Richmond, BC, native is now with the first team, he can still be loaned to play matches with Whitecaps FC U-23. Vancouver can also take comfort in having a host of returning players to the side. 11 collegiate players have been added to the roster, with seven of those players previously part of Whitecaps FC development teams including no less than four who previously played for the Caps in the PDL. Whitecaps FC achieved overall positive results in the PDL on home turf last season, finishing with a 5W-2L-1D record in their eight home matches, with the lone game at Swangard seeing the Caps come away with a 2-0 victory against North Sound SeaWolves. KITSAP PUMAS As one of the few professional teams in the PDL, Kitsap come into their opening match with a great feeling of momentum following their PDL championship success last season. In defence, the returning champs will look to Taylor Hyde and Steve Mohn once again, as the duo played crucial roles in their 12 clean sheets last season, not to mention the man between the pipes, goalkeeper Zac Lubin. In midfield, Matt Friesen and Kyle Johnson will also make their return after a combined total of nine goals and three assists last season. We expect a high level of football from them, said Pumas head Coach James Ritchie. We think it'll be an exciting year. The Pumas will be hoping to replicate the 11-match unbeaten run that they had to start last season, which got them off to a fantastic start and ultimately propelled them to a lengthy playoff run that saw them become champions of the 64-team PDL. NEXT UP Following their season opener, Whitecaps FC U-23 play their first ever match against newfound Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC U-23 next Friday, May 11, again at Swangard Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. PT.

Henrik Lundqvist, Evgeni Malkin And Steven Stamkos Up For Ted Lindsay Award
Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers, Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning were named as the finalists Wednesday for the Ted Lindsay Award. The award goes to the NHL's most outstanding player, as voted by members of the National Hockey League Players' Association. The Lester B. Pearson Award was renamed in Lindsay's honour two years ago and has been handed out since the 1970-71 season. The winner will be announced at the NHL awards in Las Vegas on June 20. Lundqvist appeared in 62 games this season, leading the New York Rangers to their best regular season record since 1993-94. He set career-best marks in save percentage (.930) and goals-against average (1.97). Lundqvist also set a career-high in wins (39), finishing third in the category, and tied for third among goaltenders in shutouts with eight. Malkin led all NHL players in regular season scoring (109 points) to earn his second Art Ross Trophy. He finished with more than 100 points in a season for the third time in his career, while finishing third in assists (59) and second in goals (a career-high 50). He also led the league in shots (339) and tied for fourth in game-winning goals (nine). Stamkos led the league in goals for the second time in his career to become only the 19th player in NHL history to record 60 goals in a season. He also finished second in points (97), tied for first with Radim Vrbata for the most game-winning goals (12) and scored an NHL record five overtime goals.

Junior Seau's Passing Deprives San Diego of Its Finest Citizen

San Diego's favorite son left us far too soon on Wednesday, dead from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Seau was just 43 years old. To San Diego natives he was more than a football player; he was a member of our family. We all knew and loved him and he never gave us any reason to not be incredibly proud of him. Even after he left town to ply his trade for another franchise in 2003, Seau was still part of the family. We cheered for him no matter what helmet he wore. If you want to know just who Seau was as a person, listen to the myriad tributes from former teammates, who unanimously claim he was one of the most incredible people they had ever met. Seau was gregarious, charming, funloving, dedicated and, above all, kind. He was the perfect example of all that could be good in the American experience. Someone who reached the ultimate heights of the American dream then shared the fruits of his labor with others and tried to improve their lives.
