Chapter 19: This and That

To be read with the video Chinese with Mike: Lesson 19 Introduction In this lesson, I introduce two very important words: this (zh) and that (n). We will use the be verb sh again, and the sentence structure is very similar to past sentence structures we have studied. Remember that we do not need articles (a, an, or the) in Chinese, so the literal translation is different from English. Here are some example sentences using zh and n: Zh sh sh. (This is a book.) Zh sh pnggu.This is an apple. Zh sh yngwwa. (This is a doll.) N sh zh. (That is a pig.) N sh shu. (That is water.) N sh gu. (That is a dog.) Making Questions As you have learned in several past lessons, we can add the question particle ma to the end to turn these statements into questions. Here are some example sentences: ? Zh sh yzi ma? (Is this a chair?) ? Zh sh zhuzi ma? (Is this a table?) ? Zh sh mo ma? (Is this a cat?)

? N sh nde pngyu ma? (Is that your friend?) ? N sh tmende losh ma? (Is that their teacher?) ? N sh nde chzi ma? (Is that your car?)

Lets answer some questions now. Here are some examples: ? Zh sh qi ma? (Is this a ball?) , Sh. Zh sh qi. (Yes. This is a ball.) ? N sh nde fngzi ma? (Is that your house?) , Sh. N sh wde fngzi. (Yes, that is my house.) ? N sh nde nnpngyude gu ma? (Is that your boyfriends dog?) , B sh. N b sh wde nnpngyude gu. (No. That is not my boyfriends dog.)
