City makes $200K donation to Vaughan Health Care Foundation

A $200,000 donation to Vaughans future hospital from city council has raised questions for at least one resident. My main concern is who the money is being donated to and for what reason, Antony Niro asked councillors Tuesday. In October, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, with the support of council, agreed to donate the $200,000 to the Vaughan Health Care Foundation from the $467,000 raised at the Mayors gala and golf tournament this summer. Mr. Niro is embroiled in a lawsuit with the Vaughan Health Campus of Care for advertisements that ran related to the future hospital lands. Mr. Niro spearheaded the group Time For Change Vaughan, which was aimed at ousting several former councillors during the 2010 municipal election. My question is what does money donated by residents of Vaughan to the VHCF intended for a hospital actually get used for? Mr Niro argued the campus of care is affiliated with the foundation. My request is that the mayor and Vaughan council add the condition to this resolution that the $200,000 donated to the Health Care Foundation not in turn be given to any organization that is a plaintiff in a litigation against any Vaughan resident, Mr. Niro said. Vaughan council needs to make a statement here. But Maple/Kleinburg Councillor Marilyn Iafrate noted that a resolution council passed in July asked the foundation to direct all their funds to the hospital. The $200,000 we all agreed to went out with very strict instructions that it was only to be put toward the hospital, Ms Iafrate said. We were very clear thats where the money is going. Ms Iafrate agreed it would not look good on the city to be giving out money to organizations suing residents. We want (the money) to be used by the community, not lawyers, she said. Mr. Bevilacqua was quick to say the focus of the money is to help those in need in the community, and pointed to donations made to organizations such as the United Way. Mr. Bevilacqua did not comment on the campus of care and Mr. Niros legal issues. I hope that within the sphere and all the litigation and positioning and everything else that comes with this issue, and were all fully cognizant of the push and pull that comes with this issue, that we find it within ourselves, the spirit that $200,000 is being directed toward helping build a hospital, Mr. Bevilacqua said.
