II Reading Comprehension (90 M)
Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
Many people believe that American teenagers think only to buy goods. They say
teens today want all the fashionable clothes, shoes, music, and sports equipment that their
friends have, all the things that they see advertised on TV and in magazines. When
American teens get money, the critics say, they walk around the shopping mall for hours at
a time. Teens who pass the time this way are called "mall crawlers." Is this stereotype of
American teenagers true?
It is true that more American teens have money to spend and that they are spending
it at the mall. Researches companies tell us, for example, that 12 to 19 year olds spent over
$109 billion in 1995, a 38% increase over 1990. Those numbers are even bigger today
because almost 50 % of teens 16 and older have part-time jobs after school or on
weekends. In addition, experts predict that the teenage population will be larger than ever
before, reaching almost 35 million by the year 2020. This means that teenage consumers
will play an even more important economic role in the future of the United States.
American teens are wealthier and work harder than before, but not all of their
interests center on clothes, music, and movies at the mall. Around 30% of working teens
save money in order to go to college. Others help in the purchase of the family grocery
budget. In addition, many American teens give their time to volunteer work and
community service. And of course at school, competition for good grades to get into
college is as tough as ever. With so many important responsibilities, it is unlikely that
American teens spend all their time and money crawling the mall. It is easy but unfair to
stereotype them in such a way.
