IN TODAYS GOSPEL...

Jesus said to his disciples: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.
John 15:1-4

FR. ADRIANS CORNER...

Its been a week of comings and goings at our parish as we said goodbye to Fr. Chuck/Padre Carlos who is Santa Barbara-bound and welcomed Fr. David as our new pastor. It was heartening to see such a great turn out on Friday last to bid farewell to Fr. Chuck who has been pastor at San Luis Rey Parish these last three years. He continued the Franciscan tradition of welcome and hospitality and promoted the integration of our various cultures, helping us to become the local Church, the people of God, here in this blessed place. It is thanks to Chuck that the Berlin Wall which divided the Mission from the Parish is gone and that we are gradually becoming One Mission at the Mission. I can tell you from having worked closely with him these last three years that he always had your interest at heart and that he we was especially concerned for the alienated and those who felt outside the fold. It is thanks to Fr. Chuck that so many of our parishioners were able to get married in the Church and have their unions convalidated. His openness enabled many to come home to the family, to the Church. He also took great care of our parish school, Old Mission Montessori, and gave it a deserved high profile in our community. We wish Fr. Chuck much happiness in Santa Barbara and assure him a warm welcome back anytime. Fr. David is no stranger to us and has just made a short trip from the Mission to the Parish to become our Pastor. Fr. David was a pastor before at San Xavier del Bac in Tucson, AZ, and later in Kazakhstan where be labored as a missionary for almost nine years before being recalled to work at San Luis Rey Mission as director two years ago. Fr. Chuck speaks Swedish, French and Spanish but Fr. David speaks Russian. Im not sure how useful that will be here at San Luis Rey but you never know! Fr. David was born in Georgia but considers himself a Floridian, having been raised there. He is a keen gardener and keeps canaries and other birds as a hobby. Like Fr. Chuck, he is also a good cook. On your behalf I wish Fr. David a happy tenure at San Luis Rey Parish and pledge our prayerful support as he begins his ministry as pastor. Our Confirmation class is reaching the end of its preparation for the Sacrament in June and I would like to ask your prayers for all these young men and women as they begin life as adult Catholics in our community. They face many pressures to abandon their faith or to water it down so that it no longer challenges. Its not easy to practice your Catholic faith as a young person in an aggressively secular society that is often hostile. We need to support these young Catholics, love them and let them

know that faith matters and that Christ is the guiding light of truth in their lives. In May they will have their retreat at the Mission we ask your prayers for those guiding the retreat and for all the wonderful volunteer teachers, youth ministers and peers who have accompanied the Confirmation Class this year. We look forward to a great celebration on Trinity Sunday, June 3rd when Bishop Robert Brom will confer the Sacrament on his final visit to San Luis Rey as Bishop of San Diego. Have a wonderful week and please pray for our young people.

Fr. Adrian.

Who is a Catholic Christian Steward? A Catholic Christian steward is a disciple of Jesus who captures the vision of Jesus for reality. Catholic stewards share in Jesus mission in their relationships, words and actions. In doing so, Jesus invites us to build Gods Kingdom by: Capturing the Vision! Place our faith and trust in God. Recognize God as the source of everything we have. Realize the gifts God has given each one of us. Give thanks to God for our gifts. Sharing the Mission! Develop our gifts. Use and share our gifts in love and justice with others. In our families, in how we love and treat each other. In our workplaces, in how we conduct our business. In our communities, in how we work towards the common good. In our parish, in how we worship and participate in parish ministries and activities. In our world, in how we tend to creation and all Gods people. Give thanks and return our gifts by building Gods Kingdom. When each of us as faith-filled individuals join together in community, and share our gifts to the fullest: Then there is justice and peace, Then there is reconciliation and healing, Then there is respect for the dignity of all life, and then there is unity and diversity, for all Gods People! Responsible Catholic stewards are everywhere! Who are they? A caring parent, a loyal friend, a generous person, a good son or daughter, a loving spouse, a dedicated volunteer, a devoted teacher, a faithful person involved in parish ministry anyone who uses his or her gifts in gratitude to God in service to others. Who is a Christian Catholic Steward? YOU ARE! Sunday, May 20 is Welcome Sunday in our parish. On May 20th, we'll be welcoming all new Parishioners and inviting everyone to join any of our incredible ministries at the Parish and Old Mission. Please come and join us in the Serra Gardens after any Mass on Sunday, May 20th to talk with Ministry representatives to learn more. We look forward to seeing all of you and talking more with you on May 20th. See you all there!

Help Wanted for Mission Retreat Center: Hosts for Private Retreats
Our genuine Franciscan hospitality is at the heart of our Private Retreat ministry and we need help from married couples who are able to volunteer to host our guests while they are here. Hosting means staying at the center in a private room, having meals here, and in general making sure the retreatant has someone to go to in case of any need someone has. A Private Retreat is generally silent or with little talking. The retreatant come to take time to pray, reflect and renew their weary souls. Hosting them is truly an act of Franciscan love and compassion. Call Pat Julian, Director of Retreat and Programs, 760.757.3659 x123/pat@sanluisrey.org

Padre Adrian Peelo, ofm
