Cost Estimation of Fabric and Garment Finishing Unless any product is characterized by value addition it is now impossible to survive in this highly competitive world market. Processing is important to make a usable but finishing gives value addition to it. It makes garments attractive, comfortable & finishing can incorporate desirable properties. Finishing is the heart of textile processing. But to give these finishes there are various costs involved in it. And each finish has its own cost. In this document we have tried to incorporate various costs of finishes. Approximate share of individual cost classes in total finishing costs: Personnel Process material Energy, water/ effluent Repairs, maintenance Capital Other costs 42-45 % 16-20% 15-21% 4% 8% 8%

Quality also plays important role in cost estimation: The more stringent the customers quality requirement the greater the expense necessary on personnel and processing technology. Costs due to quality requirements are relative to the product and the economic situation. Costs due to Quality requirements amount to 6-10% of turnover. Quality costs include: Length Compensation, short measure and weight these costs class are quite typical in textile finishing. Compensation for fabric damaged in finishing. Credits/price reductions for faulty finished fabric. Return costs.

Fabric direct from the loom is unattractive. To make the fabric attractive and acceptable to the consumer, several finishing processes are applied. Sometimes, special finishes are also applied to the fabric to make it serviceable for particular end use.

If softeners are added in the jigger after dyeing, then the cost is Rs 10/kg whereas if it is done on a separate machine and later stentering is done then the cost is Rs 20/kg. It is important to note that wastage and shrinkage are integral part of costing. Cost of the fabric = Cost of grey fabric + dyeing charges + finishing charges + shrinkage + wastage.
