EDU 5170 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I Derrick Labombard Grade: 8 Tessellations and Properties Math Standards Geometry 8G.

5-2-12

Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. 1. Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations: 2. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them. 3. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them. Technology Standards 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 2. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks 3. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources

a. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project 4. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity 5. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. Understand and use technology systems Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able understand what tessellations are and see examples of tessellations. 2. Students will be able to get a deeper understanding of the vocabulary and properties of tessellations. 3. Students will be able to create their own tessellations. Introduce the Learning Activity: 1. I will ask the students to first look up various tessellations online using Google photos. 2. I will ask the students to write down some of the properties that they notice of the tessellations. Provide Information: 1. I will include a review sheet of the vocabulary we will cover in class on my website (student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 ) and it will be located under resources. The vocabulary list will include tessellation, rotation, reflections, translations, symmetry transformations and dilations. Provide Practice: 1. I will tell the students that we will be cover tessellations in class today and inform them we will also be review some vocabulary for the test tomorrow. 2. Students then will look up tessellations on line and write down the numerous properties that tessellations have. 3. We will as classes then discuss different tessellations and the properties they have. 4. Then we will as a class discusses the vocabulary review sheet that I provided under my resource section of my website under tessellation maker. 5. I will call on individuals to read the definition out loud and will briefly discuss how these different definition and properties apply to tessellations. 6. Then students will be asked to create their own tessellations using a program that is under my resources section called tessellation maker. 7. At the end of class we will discuss the process of making tessellations and students will have to study for their quiz they will have the next class on vocabulary we covered and students will be asked to bring in their tessellation that they created for 5 bonus points on the quiz they will have the next day.

Provide Knowledge of Results: 1. I will make sure that students understand the vocabulary by talking as a class and going over the vocabulary that will be on the quiz the next day. 2. I will also make sure to walk around the room to help students and make sure students are on task which will include making the tessellations towards the end and looking up different kinds of tessellations as we will do at the beginning of class. 3. Students will have to hand in their tessellations at the end of class or the next day and I will provide them written feedback on whether their tessellation was done correctly and if they are done correctly students will receive 5 bonus points on the quiz that they will receive. Review the Activity: 1. At the end of class we will how making tessellation applies to the vocabulary that we will cover throughout class. Method of Assessment: 1. Throughout the lesson I will walk around the room to make sure students are on task and understand the assignment. 2. Students will receive a quiz the next day on tessellation and the vocabulary we covered in class. The quiz will be the next class and again students will receive 5 bonus points if they complete the tessellation activity and it is done correctly.
