Armed
Services
Awards
May 14
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Tabernacle Sun
The Lenape Regional High
School District will be sending off
graduating seniors who have cho-
sen to serve their country by en-
listing in the Armed Forces in
style this year, as it continues an
event that has become an annual
tradition.
The Lenape Regional High
School District will host the third
annual Armed Services Awards
on Monday, May 14, at 7 p.m., at
the Lenape High School auditori-
um.
The event will honor district
students who are entering the
military or military academy,
alumni and district employees
serving in the armed forces as
well as military veterans.
In addition, this years ceremo-
ny will pay tribute, for the first
time, to parents of students who
are actively serving or who are
veterans of the armed services.
A number of veterans have
been invited to attend the ceremo-
ny on Monday, said Chris Heilig,
the assessment, accountability
and planning coordinator for the
district.
We feel its important to recog-
nize them through a special cere-
mony. Its a nice opportunity for

The Tabernacle Sun
Pine Tree Educational Center
in Tabernacle will be bustling
with young excitement during
Mothers Day weekend.
This event, conversely, is all for
the boys.
The Burlington County Coun-
cil Cub Scouts to be precise.
On May 11, 12, and 13, Cub
Scouts and their parents will be
able to enjoy the great outdoors
through a real camping experi-
ence: in tents, not cabins.
Elizabeth McDonald, Cub-o-
Ree coordinator and council vol-
unteer, said the original schedule
has changed from what was origi-
nally advertised.
We had a lot of people who
couldnt camp out because of
Mothers Day on Sunday, Mc-
Donald said. Were offering an
alternative for those who want to
camp on Friday night.
Cub Scouts can pick one of the
nights to camp out, either Friday
or Saturday, with all of the fun ac-
tivities to be held on Saturday be-
ginning at 8 a.m. They can also
choose to simply attend the day
events.
The center will host up to 125
Cub Scouts, McDonald said. The

Technology changes ahead
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Tabernacle Sun
As the 2011-12 school year
wanes in Tabernacle, superin-
tendent George Rafferty says
changes are on the horizon, es-
pecially in the technology
realm.
The Tabernacle School Dis-
trict is on a three-year technolo-
gy plan, but with changes oc-
curring so rapidly, Rafferty said
now is the time to evaluate the
methods of technology used in
the schools.
Were moving our deadline
for reviewing our plan and dis-
cussing where we want to go
with technology up a year, Raf-
ferty said.
The district will have a meet-
ing to decide what the next
move will be before the school
year ends, he said.
Technology has changed so
much, he explained.
With the onset of tablet de-
vices such as the iPad, schools
around the country have revo-
lutionized the resources that
help students learn, he said.
One school in New Haven,
Conn., purchased 200 iPads.
Were due for updating a lot
of our computers, he said. We
have nearly 400 of them in our
schools, between office staff,
computer labs, media centers
and classrooms.
The schools want to upgrade
to Windows 7. Right now, they
are still functioning on Win-
dows XP.
Desktop computers, he said,
are obsolete. Rather than spend-
ing money to purchase newer
versions of desktops, Rafferty
said the schools are considering
spending some of the money al-
located for technology on differ-
ent forms of equipment, such

in our opinion
D
o you have an extra $1,300 that
you dont need and wouldnt
mind giving to the govern-
ment? Didnt think so.
But, if you live in New Brunswick,
your household is on the hook for
$1,330.68 when it comes to covering ac-
cumulated sick and vacation time for
public workers, according to the gover-
nors office.
Statewide, the governor estimates
that accumulated sick and vacation
time totals more than $825 million on
municipalities books.
Seems excessive. Or, rather, just
plain wrong.
As one of the exercise gurus from
the 80s or 90s said: Stop the insanity.
The Star-Ledger last week had a
great report on how a number of polit-
ical figures stand to cash out hand-
somely when they retire. It also points
out that, while some reform was
passed in 2010 capping new employees
payouts, theres still a lot of political
wrangling going on. The newspaper
reported that the Democrats want to
allow public workers to keep only the
time theyve accumulated, while Gov.
Christie wants to force employees to
use banked time when taking days in
the future, thereby reducing the num-
ber of payable days upon retirement.
For those of us in the private sector,
chances are the decision already has
been made: Were not banking any-
thing. Were lucky to have a job. Were
fighting rising health-care premiums
and the like, while probably not get-
ting much of a raise if any raise at
all.
So, the whole concept of banked
sick pay is foreign to us. Politicians
should take note.
It seems the governor and the De-
mocrats both recognize the larger
problem here, and, in fact, have
worked to address it moving forward
with new employees.
Lets hope that they can reach an
agreement on the details. Taxpayers
are footing some mighty big bills
now and will be in the future.
Sick means sick
Sick days are for when you are sick, not for when you retire
Sick day reform
The governor and Democrats already
have reached an agreement on bene-
fits for new employees. Now they
should be able to work out the details
on the big bills for which taxpayers
are still on the hook.
Parent needed for overnight trip
April Cub-o-Ree sold out and it is likely
that this event will, as well.
This session, the theme centers on geolo-
gy.
Basically, we divide the boys up into
dens for the day, she said, with a schedule
of activities similar to a day at school, al-
though that is where the similarities end.
The boys ages 6 to 11 will be able to prac-
tice archery, play with BB guns and em-
bark on geology rock and fossil projects.
Theyre in a different activity through-
out the day, she said, to ensure that every
Cub Scout gets to experience everything
the day offers.
Archery and BBs are their absolute fa-
vorite every time, she said, with trained
officers running the events to ensure safe-
ty comes first.
Usually, its the parents who might get
nervous until they see it, she said. Once
everybody realizes that safety comes first,
then they can relax and enjoy it.
The fun runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with
hot lunch and dinner included in the price.
After dinner, there will be a campfire
program.
We have a large campfire ring, she
said, with room for everyone on benches.
There will be songs, skits and plenty of
jokes to go around.
Its like a show combined with a camp-
fire, McDonald said. Its a lot of fun.
At lights out, the Scouts will head to
their tents. They should bring a sleeping
bag, change of clothes and breakfast for
the next morning.
We have everything from groups who
bring dry cereal and muffins to those who
do a full camp set-up, she said, bringing
pancakes, eggs and bacon.
It all depends on how involved the pack
or den wishes to be and how experienced
the parents or leaders are. Camp breakfast
can be part of the fun.
But parents shouldnt feel obliged to
bring out the works.
Its perfectly fine to bring bagels and
yogurt and call it a morning, she said.
More than the activities, food, and camp
experience, McDonald said this is a way for
Cub Scouts to branch out and meet new
friends.
It makes a good first experience to
make camping fun for the boys, she said.
We are so lucky as a council that we have
that Pine Tree Camp. It opens peoples ex-
periences to see what we have in having
that camp facility to us locally.
The next time Scouts encounters an
event, they will have a better understand-
ing of what to expect, she said.
McDonald urged attendees, who will be
coming from all over Burlington County, to
not use their GPS to get to the grounds.
Its one of those roads that doesnt con-
nect because of the cranberry bogs, she
said.
Sometimes, a wild turkey comes
through.
Its really great, she said.
To attend overnight, a Scout and parent
ticket is $55. For Saturday only, a ticket
costs $50. An overnight trio, a parent with
two sons or two parents with one son, costs
$75 overnight and $75 Saturday only.
A parent is needed to camp overnight.
Sometimes a Scout will be the only one
from his pack in attendance, while other
times, 24 scouts from one pack might show
up, McDonald said.
The Scouts are able to learn that theres
a lot more of them than just the boys in
their school, she said.
For more information, contact the Scout
service center at (609) 261-5850 or Elizabeth

Alpaca poop does
indeed smell
Contrary to what the alpaca
owner says, alpaca poop, like any
other, does indeed smell. I should
know: I live nearby and down-
wind of the operation. About half
the time, the smell is noticeable at
our house. I guess the owner, liv-
ing with the animals, has devel-
oped immunity to it. We like to
cook outdoors and eat on the deck
in nice weather. This is not al-
ways pleasant. When your guests
start sniffing the air and looking
around, you know it is time to
move the party indoors.
Several nearby neighbors have
horses. These have not posed a
problem because of the small
number of animals spread over a
large neighborhood.
The alpaca operation generates
at least 40 tons of manure a year.
The owner would have us believe
that this is not an issue because it
is spread over pastures to make
grass grow which the alpacas eat,
completing a cycle and keeping
nitrate pollutants on site. In fact,
this is not a closed system since
most of the nourishment the ani-
mals get is from hay and commer-
cial feed brought in from outside.
The amount of manure and asso-
ciated nitrates continues to grow
since nothing is ever removed. Ni-
trates do not only fertilize the pas-
tures, but leach into the ground
water we drink and are present in
storm water run off to other
properties.
Manure is not the only issue:
no one considers the liquid waste
the animals produce, which can-
not be collected and piled up.
If you think the nitrates that a
bunch of animals produce is not
an issue, think again: much of
the gunpowder used in the Amer-
ican Revolution was made from
nitrates obtained by processing
barnyard waste. The Chesapeake
Bay is polluted from hundreds of
years of storm water run off
from traditional agricultural
practices in Lancaster County, Pa.
I suppose it could be worse: it

as tablets, to be used to help with
classroom instruction.
If you can imagine now
with the new technology that is
available to pull the students
back, each of them holding an
iPad or tablet, he said. The stu-
dent can hold that device in their
hands.
Some desktops will need to be
simply updated to newer desk-
tops, he said, to accommodate the
needs throughout the school.
Teachers need desktops to oper-
ate the smart board devices and
projectors.
They need that computer in
their classroom that they use for
instruction to be the most up-to-
date model, he explained.
Technology that can be used
in schools if people are willing to
get excited about it is just amaz-
ing, he said. Its not an extra
cost. We have one pile of money
to spend on technology thats bud-
geted.
Administrators reappointed,
counselor turns full-time
The Kenneth R. Olson Middle
School has historically always
had a full-time guidance coun-
selor. Tabernacle Elementary
School has not. Currently, guid-
ance counselor Kimberly White
will come in on a part-time basis
for a few hours a day certain days
of the week and leave by midday,
Rafferty said.
Theres over 400 students at
the Tabernacle Elementary
School, Rafferty said. We need
one in each building.
At the April 23 board of educa-
tion meeting, all administrators
and outside service providers
were reappointed for the 2012-13
school year, and White was pro-
moted to full-time status.
Guidance counselors are a nec-
essary part of the educational
process, he explained. They are
needed to deal with student crises
and to investigate and explore ha-
rassment and bullying com-
plaints.
White has done a great job in
the schools, Rafferty said, and has
a great working relationship with
students, parents and staff.
We look at this as a really im-
portant position in the schools,
he said. For us, this was an obvi-
ous choice.
