General description of the foundry indicating size, output, experience and organisation chart. Types of castings and compositions of steels in general production including mass of castings as dressed. Types of castings for marine applications which the foundry wishes to manufacture Steel making Number, type and capacity of furnaces; Composition of charge; Use of oxygen in steel making, if any; Deoxidation practice. Charge history sheets for typical casts which are considered by the firm to be suitable for marine applications.

Heat treatment facilities Capacity of furnaces. Method of heating, control and recording of temperatures.

Testing and inspection facilities Type and capacity of tensile testing machines and whether these have been calibrated under the supervision of IRS Surveyors. Details of impact testing machines and facilities for low temperature testing. Details of the non-destructive testing facilities available and a note regarding the extent these facilities are used. Details of the facilities available and general procedure for the repair of castings by welding.

General comments on the record keeping of the chemical analysis and mechanical testing and comments on the general perusal of these records. Approval testing Two samples representing two separate heats are to be selected for routine testing from regular production. The mass and intended use of the castings are to be reported. Location of the integral test pieces is to be reported. In case of separate test samples, the size of the test castings is to be reported. The test pieces must undergo the same heat treatment as the selected castings. The following tests are to be performed on each cast: Tensile test (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and reduction of area). One hardness test. 3 impact tests each at 20C and 0C respective. If the castings are intended for low temperature service, then the testing is to be carried out at 20C and the relevant low temperature specification of the material. One photo - micrograph (100x) Chemical analysis. When approval is requested both for carbon and alloy steels, the testing may be restricted to one cast of each steel type. Details of the procedure regarding segregation, storage and disposal of rejected materials. Any other comments, which in the opinion of the Surveyor may be of importance.
