Welcome to SOCAP: DESIgNINg THE FUTURE, a time when we gather together to look at where the market at the intersection of money and meaning has come from, where it is now, and where its going next.
This is a high concept SOCAP; were looking beyond the immediate present at complex, systemic issues that we can only influence by learning to work together toward a shared future. Thats why we wanted to hold SOCAP: Designing the Future in Sweden. This is a place where, once people realize what the problems are, they naturally set forth working together to solve them. We are grateful to Malm University and the city of Malm, as well as Region Skne and its partner group Business Region Skne for being our partners in this first ever Nordic SOCAP. Impact investing investing your money for a blend of financial as well as social and environmental value has become a global phenomenon, a unique mix of an asset class that still retains elements of being a movement for change in the world. Impact investing invests in social enterprises: businesses that are created to be financially sustainable and to return capital to investors while they solve a social or environmental problem. For-profit social enterprises range from businesses creating jobs and hope in immigrant neighborhoods in Europe, to companies installing solar panels in Sub-Saharan African villages that simultaneously cut energy costs by 30% and remove deadly kerosene fumes from the home. Impact investing looks at success as blended value returns: some value shows up on the balance sheet, some shows up in clean water in a community, or in the fact that an eight-yearold can safely walk two blocks to an ice cream truck in her neighborhood. Blended value encompasses those things you would gladly give to, that you would pay for, and that you would invest your hopes and your money in. Its the market at the intersection of money and meaning; letting investors put their money where their meaning is, and receive a return for doing it. The market does not solve every problem, but it can solve many problems better than either giving or public funding alone. Blended value investing investing for positive impact along with financial return does not replace philanthropy, or government and publicly-funded efforts to address social and environmental problems. Instead, it reduces their cost and increases their reach and scale.

Impact Investing: an asset class meets a movement
WELCOME
It has become clear, as our global problems become more complex and interconnected, that neither public-funding nor philanthropy alone is sufficient to meet the problems we face: from climate change, to immigration and inclusion, to youth unemployment that is reaching 25% and more in some places in Europe. As we gather together investors and entrepreneurs from around the world for SOCAP: Designing the Future, we are exploring how we can bring all our resources to bear, within the limits of planetary boundaries that put limits on unending growth, to begin to sketch out the collaborative, inclusive, financiallysustainable future we need in order to actualize the world we want for our children and grandchildren. Join us as we design the future.

Things are changing. More and more investors are looking for an extra dimension to their investments. And on a global front we can see how industry, investors, decision-makers, and social entrepreneurs are beginning to work together to develop new types of companies from which we can all benefit. Sweden in general and particularly Skne and Malm is now well on the way to establishing itself as a development hub for social entrepreneurship in Europe. It therefore gives us great pleasure to host SOCAP: Designing the Future here in Malm, bringing with it a fantastic opportunity for our region. The conference will put a new development field on the map, not only in Sweden, but also in Scandinavia and large parts of Europe. The conference will provide the opportunity to attract new capital, which can be linked with ideas and social entrepreneurs from all over Europe, parts of the USA, and the rest of the world. The realization of SOCAP: Designing the Future is an important part of the process to broaden the concept of innovation in Sweden, and makes an important contribution to Swedens advancement as one of the leading operators in Europe with regard to social innovation as a growth area. Malm University, Region Skne, and the City of Malm have actively participated in SOCAP conferences in both San Francisco and Amsterdam, and have formed a close relationship with the SOCAP team in San Francisco. The founders of SOCAP Kevin Jones and Rosa Lee Harden have visited Sweden and Scandinavia on a number of occasions. They have thus discovered that Sweden possesses a vast depth of knowledge and a great interest with regards to both the interaction between sectors and getting social entrepreneurs involved in the work of development and growth all with the aim of finding new solutions to societal challenges.
WELCOME
SOCAP: Designing the Future offers a platform of new knowledge, experience, and contacts for social entrepreneurs, social innovators, and investors. It is also aimed at those who want to know more about social innovation and social entrepreneurship. In an inspiring environment, we can cooperate to develop novel ways of working new configurations, and support companies that want to solve global societal problems. WElcoME To MAlM, SkNE, AND SWEDEN!

Effectively looking at the future takes connecting to those who can help you build towards it right now. SOCAP provides meaningful ways to connect with other participants and those beyond the walls of the conference. Helpful volunteers, the Pop-Up Hub, Hub-Create Sessions, the Sustainable Solutions Video Tour, Landscape Cartoons, and a special trip offering to Northern Sweden are just some of the ways we do that.

We are aware that problems like global warming, starvation, and threats to human rights do exist. And the world is asking for solutions. The question is not so often whether or why we should act for a more sustainable development, rather it is more often how we can accomplish change.

Roaming around the space, youll see a vibrant team of videographers interviewing conference participants. Their videos will be showing in the Pop-Up Hub. These videographers are leading the Sustainable Solutions Tour a journey around European cities with a simple mission: to find the most innovative examples of sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges, and to share their stories with the world. SOCAP looks at Designing the Future through four lenses, making complex issues clear across interdisciplinary boundaries
16
THEMES
17
The following are the core session themes that will be covered at SOCAP: Designing the Future:
PUBLIC-PRIvATE PARTNERSHIPS /
INCLUSION /
What are the best, creative, market-based solutions to the complex, interconnected issues of youth unemployment, immigrant inclusion, and providing for the needs of a growing aging population? A new kind of investment fund is teaching skills, creating jobs, and funding new enterprises for youth and immigrants. We bring together leading private and public sector actors from around the world with new innovators from the United States and across Europe to share ways to improve individual lives, boost the economy, and ensure the stability of social welfare systems.
BIOSPHERE ECONOMy /
The economy of the future will have to work for both people and the planet, dissolving siloed approaches that focus only on the planet or only on social problems. Investing within planetary growth boundaries is complex and calls for new, multidisciplinary partnerships that break down traditional barriers between environmentalists and socially-focused impact investors. We bring together valuable strangers from young world-changing entrepreneurs, to experienced investors, and world-renowned scientists from the Stockholm Resilience Centre. We are starting to work together using investment to solve both social and ecological problems within a holistic framework, as funders focused on species extinction learn to partner with investors focused on market-based solutions to poverty.
Throughout Europe, public funding is drying up. At the same time, the need for social services is growing. How do we keep society functioning in this new climate? New kinds of publicprivate partnerships are arising, using innovative new models of social enterprise and impact investment to fill the gap. The UK has experienced a precipitous decline in public funding and has created more new innovations than anywhere in Europe from the Big Society Bank (potentially Europes largest social investment vehicle) to Social Impact Bonds that change the rules for success and failure in problem neighborhoods. We will examine these new, promising, and replicable innovations and experiments.
