Monday Ask the Student Experts 10:30 Teachers Hamideh, Larisa & Rich Intermediate 6/4/2012 This class helps International students learn how to make brief academic & business presentations using English. Students will learn and practice the major elements of professional presentations. English-speaking presentation experts will help coach students on the fundamentals of presentations. Each student will have the opportunity to give a presentation. The class will be led by two Internationals with excellent English proficiency, with the assistance of the Friendship House Director. Bible Study - Gospel of Luke 12:00 Teacher Peter Intermediate 6/4/2012 This class reviews the Book of Luke, the fourth and longest Gospel of the New Testament in the Christian Bible. Like the other three Gospels, the Book of Luke is an account of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The author of this Gospel is Luke the Evangelist; he is also known as "the physician." As translated in English, Luke is a beautiful example of English writing and shows the global reach of Christianity, both two millennia ago and today. Bible Study - Heroes of the Bible 12:00 Teacher Becky Intermediate 6/4/2012 This class is for International youth ages 9-12. It will focus on some of the major heroes of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible, including Abraham, Daniel, David, Esther and Moses, just to name a few. Students will help the teacher decide which heroes to study. Pre-registration for this class is required. The class will be limited to eight (8) students and ends on June 25. English Conversation Tutoring 1:00 Friendship House Tutors All levels 5/21/2012 Friendship House has many volunteer tutors willing to assist International students with their English conversation on a one-on-one (or one-on two-or-three) basis. While we are pleased to have many volunteers available, we will probably not have enough tutors for all International students wanting one. Tutors will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis, with the individual needs of the students also considered. All English levels will be served. Like all Friendship House classes, there is no charge for tutoring. Tutoring will be by appointment only. Interested students need to contact Rich at the Friendship House. Tuesday Casual English Conversation 9:30 Teachers Tom & Kathy All levels 5/22/2012 This class is designed for International students who want to learn English conversation in a comfortable, relaxing and fun environment. Teachers Tom and Kathy are both retired teachers with over 70 years of U.S. teaching experience between them. Students are encouraged to laugh and learn in equal amounts.

Tuesday - continued English Conversation Outings 11:00 Teachers Tom & Kathy All levels 5/22/2012 This class starts, but almost never ends, at Friendship House. That's because the purpose of this class is get International students out into the communities of East Lansing, Michigan State University, Lansing and Okemos where English conversation is used in many different ways. Students also get plenty of fresh air and exercise through biking, hiking, walking, golf and several other activities. English Conversation Tutoring 1:00 Friendship House Tutors All levels 5/22/2012 Friendship House has many volunteer tutors willing to assist International students with their English conversation on a one-on-one (or one-on-two-or-three) basis. English Idioms & Figures of Speech 7:00 Teacher Bonnie Intermediate 6/4/2012 This class will examine many of the English expressions, idioms and figures of speech that Internationals usually find interesting, but sometimes confusing as to their meaning, purpose and use. Students will be encouraged to discuss and use idioms in their English conversation at Friendship House and in their daily life in the East Lansing and Michigan State University communities. Wednesday Learning English: It's Not Boot Camp 12:00 Teacher Ken Intermediate 5/23/2012 Internationals sometimes think that learning English is a difficult or extremely challenging experience. But, the truth is that learning and using English in conversation can be a fun, rewarding and greatly interesting thing to do. This class proves that English conversation can be successfully learned, remembered and used during your stay in the United States. English vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation are emphasized in this class. Students are given many opportunities each week to practice and use their "second" language. American Culture & English Conversation 3:00 Teacher Kelly Intermediate The link between English conversation and American culture is strong and important to understand. Wednesday - continued awareness of the society in which it is used -- and the way the language itself changes the way we live. This class will teach English conversation as it is used and changed by American traditions and customs, both traditional and modern. U.S. News & English Conversation 6:00 Teacher Dave Intermediate 5/23/2012 Many International students discover that studying the news in the U.S. -- newspapers, TV, news magazines, blogs and other online news sources -- is a great way to learn English conversation and patterns, as well as a way to remain up to date on news and events around the world and back in their home country. This class uses U.S. news sources as a means of teaching English in an easy, informal way. Thursday Bible study - Life & Words of Jesus 10:00 Teacher Clyde Intermediate Jesus is the central figure in the Christian faith because He died for the sins of everyone, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. His life on earth, some 2000 years ago, is well documented in the Bible. His words are there as are His teachings, miracles and promises. This class will use the four Gospels of the Bible's New Testament to find, study and understand His words. Summer Adventures in English Literacy 10:30 Teacher Mary Lou Intermediate This English conversation class will cover many topics, explore hobbies, discuss gardening, enjoy an American picnic, travel to the exciting Michigan city of Frankenmuth, play traditional American games, make strawberry jam, create your Memory Books and experience the joy of summer in Michigan. This will truly be a series of grand summer adventures using English conversation. 6/7/2012

Bible study - Amazing Miracles! 1:00 Teacher Mary Lou Intermediate 6/7/2012 This Bible class will take a close look at many of Jesus' miracles using the New Testament of the Christian Bible which faithfully recorded His life on earth two thousand years ago. These were not ordinary events mistaken for something special; they were unmistakable, extraordinary and actual miracles performed before thousands of people that still today inspire awe. English Conversation Tutoring 2:00 Friendship House Tutors All levels 5/31/2012 Friendship House has many volunteer tutors willing to assist International students with their English conversation on a one-on-one (or one-on-two-or-three) basis. Bible study - Gospel of John 7:00 Teachers Dick & Elaine Intermediate 5/13/2012 This class reviews the Book of John, the fourth and last of the New Testament Gospels of the Christian Bible. The author is considered

to be John the Apostle, one of the twelve original followers of Jesus Christ. In addition to being about Jesus' life and ministry on earth, the book also discusses religious issues at the time it was written (about 90 A.D.). Friday English for International Consumers 10:30 Teacher Rich/Invited Experts Intermediate 6/8/2012 This class will teach Internationals about important consumer terms and concepts in the U.S. Many Internationals come to America unaware of their consumer rights and responsibilities in such areas as banking, medical care, prescription drugs, public schools, health insurance, food, driving, and much more. English-speaking experts from these, and other, fields will be featured for students to hear and question. Students will help select the consumer areas of interest this class will review. International Spouse Connection 1:00 ISC Leaders Dana, Jing, Barbara, Cheryl All levels 6/15/2012 ISC (International Spouse Connection) is a group for International spouses and also organized by the spouses. They share their cultures, life stories and interests. Spouses practice English while talking about different topics every week. All International spouses and all conversation levels are welcome. Saturday English Conv, Vocabulary, Pronunciation 10:00 Teacher Maxine Intermediate 5/18/2012 In this class, English conversation is approached through attention to vocabulary, pronunciation and American culture. Traditions and special observances unique to American life and society are also highlighted. This class emphasizes student speaking, sharing, comparing and contrasting what they see and experience un the U.S. with their home countries. This is a good class for Internationals whose work, academic or child care schedules make it hard for them to attend Friendship House classes during the week.
