CLASS 4 Oral EC15 2005


1. Preparation and how to dismantle fuel injector? Use all ppe (protective protection equipment) before doing the work. Make sure there ready spare injector which is ready to be used. Testing it, looking for no leaking or dripping. Obtain correct injection pressure. Shut the inlet valve for fuel pump. Before that remove all the attach pipes on the injector. Then used special tool to jack out the injector.

2. Bunker procedure before and after? Before C/e make bunker plan. C/e briefing delegate work. The engineer in charge (3rd) takes sounding of each tank at barge. The tank to be filled is emptied. The v/v in bunker pipeline is set/open & made ready. Walkie Talkie prepares. Communication with barge. Put sampling cock Ensure all deck scupper is plugged. Duties divide among engine personnel. SOPEP (Ship oil pollution Emergency Plan) as standby at bunker manifold.

During Time of bunkering. Check other tank any leaking. Someone should be standby at the manifold to look out for leakage. Sounding tanks should be taken at constant interval. Stability is taken into account when receiving bunker. The 2nd engineer in charge controlling the valve needs to be change due to fill up different tank. After Time of stop Cannot let the tank full so ullage blow thru Air vent to check oil out at air vent. The final sounding should be taken and amount of bunker receive to be calculated. The engineer in charge should go to the bunker barge and check all tanks. When everything is satisfactory, the chief engineer will sign on the bunker document from the bunker barge. Ensure that the blank flange on the bunker manifold is tightly bolted.

4. What preparation m/e at port? Start jacket water pre-heater. start main lo pump, camshaft pump (crosshead pump), indicator cock open, manually press lubricate quill, Ask for propeller clearance from officer in charge. engage turning gear Start turning gear see any water come out from the cock. After stop disengage. Fill air bottle until 30bar. prepare starting air line system start aux. blower Test telegraph; make sure communication with bridge ok. Blow through engine, check condition combustion. Close indicator cock, test with fuel ahead and astern. Engine standby inform bridge.

5. Boiler water treatment? To balance all chemical condition in the boiler To avoid corrosion. Avoid carryover Avoid loss of condensate Avoid contamination by salt water Complete evaporation process Use god quality evaporated sea water/fresh water

27. Preparation to overhaul exhausts v/v? Make sure all safety precaution taken before the work commence Delegate the personnel in the engine room involved in overhauling the exhaust valve Prepare all necessary tools and spare Make sure that L.O. pump stop, turning gear engaged, shut inlet, outlet and then drain the cooling water Disconnect all connections at the exhaust valve Unscrew the exhaust valve locking bolt by using hydraulic unit Secure the lifting arrangement for the exhaust valve Carefully lift the exhaust valve by using overhead crane Then place it on its special stand Now the exhaust valve is ready to inspection and overhauling.

Pump for inspection Make sure all safety precaution taken before any work commence Prepare all tools Isolate the pump from usage/take the pump out of service Open breaker and take out its fuse Inform all personnel by hanging warning notice on the MSB Disconnect the motor and cover the terminal from any contact Separate the motor from the pump by disconnect the connecting shaft Before dismantling make sure to make marking on all connection and body of the pump Dismantle the pump and place all the component accordingly on a clean area Now the pump is ready for inspection

29. Dry-docking procedure? Every 2 years the ship have to go for dry docking Dry docking plan have to be prepare before the ship come in and to be confirm from both side i.e. shore and ship.

33. Procedure of flashing up boiler. Make sure all safety precaution taken before commencing any work Check the boiler internally and externally All drain are closed All loose parts fastened Open air vent Open auxiliary feed check valve and fill boiler between the lowest and normal water level Purge the boiler Fire the boiler by using pilot burner Check flame condition Warm up boiler gradually Fire 5 minutes , stop 10 minutes Continue until steady whiff of steam come out from the air vent Close air vent Ease up boiler steam stop valve to avoid jamming Steadily and gradually increase the steam pressure Crack open the main steam stop valve to heat the F.O. before changing over from D.O. to F.O. Blow through the gauge glass Shut the auxiliary feed check valve and open the main feed check valve Maintain water level and steam pressure before changing to automatic operation.

Apply enclosed space entry permit from chief office Delegate work to all personnel covering from operational level, support level and emcy level for duties and nature of work Prepare all tools for commencing work e.g. blower, intrinsically safe bulb, air trunk, B.A. set, stretcher, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, walkie-talkie Open the manhole and force ventilate for a period at least 24 hours Confirm the condition with chief officer for permit approval (oxygen level, hazardous gases) Prepare the space with adequate lighting provided by intrinsically safe bulb Enter the enclosed space carefully taking into account all the safety precaution Make sure to station one personnel at the entrance during work Ensure constant communication between the person inside the enclosed space and the person standing outside While working, if the condition doesnt permit further work to be done, immediately leave the space

Fresh water and distilled water piston cooling Advantages The main advantages is the ability of water to absorb large amounts of heat Relatively easy to obtain. Easily counter check from drain tank any leakage on piston sealing Disadvantages The piston cooling water conveyance piston and attendant gear must be kept out of the crankcase as far as possible, due to the danger of contamination of the crankcase lubricating oil by water leakage. In other word, the jacket cooling water and piston cooling system should have separated which having their own pumps, coolers, piping etc. The piston cooling space should be drained of water after the engine is shut down for an extend period. A drain tank is necessary for the same purpose cascade type filter is often incorporated for separation of oil and water There is risk of scaling and corrosion if water is not suitable treated and maintained.
