became popular. Her daughter Anna Jarvis would continue her mothers efforts. In New York City, Julia Ward Howe led a Mothers Day anti-war observance on June 2, 1872, which was accompanied by a Mothers Day Proclamation. The observance continued in Boston for about 10 years under Howes personal sponsorship, then died out. Several years later a Mothers Day observance on May 13, 1877 was held in Albion, Michigan over a dispute related to the temperance movement. In the early 1880s, the Methodist Episcopal Church in Albion set aside the second Sunday in May to recognize the special contributions of mothers. Frank E. Hering, President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, made the first known public plea for a national day to honor our mothers in 1904.

and maternal bonds in general, as well the positive contributions that they make to society. The original purpose of Mothers Day was to promote peace by means of honoring mothers who had lost or were at risk of losing their sons to war.

establish a Mothers Day in the U.S. were mostly marked by womens peace groups. A common early activity was the meeting of groups of mothers whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the American Civil War. There were several limited observances in the 1870s and the 1880s but none achieved resonance beyond the local level. In 1868 Ann Jarvis created a committee to establish a Mothers Friendship Day whose purpose was to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War, and she wanted to expand it into an annual memorial for mothers, but she died in 1905 before the celebration

Bronx Girl, 11, Texts Pals, Hangs Herself In Room Everyone Ignored Her Cry For Help
An 11-year-old Bronx girl took her life by hanging herself from a bedroom door after sending suicidal texts to friends. It was unclear what prompted Wilnery Polanco-Uben to kill herself after skipping school on Monday. Suicide by someone so young is rare. Landlord Bobby Singh said he heard screaming in the Croes Ave. apartment about 7 p.m., ran downstairs and found the girls mother in hysterics. She said her daughter was missing. Everyone in the building began searching for her, he said. We opened the door in the apartment, but no one saw her. We looked outside. We looked everywhere.

West Virginia. But the first official service was on May 10, 1908 in the same church, accompanied by a larger ceremony in the Wanamaker Auditorium in the Wanamakers store on Philadelphia. The next year the day was reported to be widely celebrated in New York. Jarvis then campaigned to establish Mothers Day first as a U.S. national holiday and then later as an international holiday. The holiday was declared officially by the state of West Virginia in 1910, and the rest of states followed quickly. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mothers Day and requesting a proclamation. On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mothers Day as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. In 1934, U.S. President Franklin

D. Roosevelt approved a stamp commemorating the holiday. In May 2008 the U.S. House of Representatives voted twice on a resolution commemorating Mothers Day, the first one being unanimous (with 21 members not voting). The Graftons church, where the first celebration was held, is now the International Mothers Day Shrine and is a National Historic Landmark.

Shortly after a meeting with a fortune teller, a British woman locked her children in their rooms, confiscated their light bulbs, toys and mattresses and later made two of them work as slaves for Roma people, otherwise known as gypsies, prosecutors said. The abuse apparently lasted for six years. Linda Clappison, of Keyingham Marsh, East Yorkshire, was convicted of two counts of child cruelty. She was sentenced to three years in prison. Before a fortune teller told her to submit her children to this abuse, Clappison was a fine mother, her children testified. But after the meeting, her son Andrew Clappison, now 18, told the court, We were treated like dogs. Judge Michael Mettyear openly chastised Clappison for her crime. It is sad that seeing your children in court giving evidence did not in any way melt your heart, the judge said. It is sad that your initial period in custody has not changed you. Custody is inevitable: you have blighted the lives of these children. Express reports that Clappisons abuses were uncovered after her daughter broke down at school in 2010, begging teachers not to send her home.

Indian Couple Arrested for Trying to Bury Baby Girl Alive

A couple has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for attempting to bury their child alive on the orders of a guru. The guru claimed that by burying their month-and-a-halfold girl, their other children would be protected from serious illness. Police in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have arrested the parents of a baby girl for allegedly trying to bury her alive, news reports said Thursday. The couple claimed to have lost a child to an incurable illness last year, the report said. The incident came to light on Wednesday in Pilakhuwa town, 100 kilometres south-west of New Delhi, after a trustee of the burial ground heard the cries of the baby and alerted police. Locals and police were able to stop the couple from burying the baby. Police have registered a case of attempted murder and conspiracy, but have not been able to trace the guru. Health At Sunrise Quick Tip

Natural Remedies For Infants and Babies.
by Dr. Rahsan Abdul Hakim
Lets start with Herbal Teas for Nursing Mothers, so the newborn can have quality, safe, most natural food-nourishment from the mother, as it has been accustomed to while it was in the mothers womb. No need to thrust the newborn into complicated eating habits right away. Nettle Tea increases breast milk, and removes mucus from the chest and breast. Fennel Seeds increase breast milk and tone up the uterus. Licorice Root tones up all female organs, and increases breast milk. Turmeric purifies breast milk and gives the baby a good complexion, safely helps with digestion (mother and baby) and is a great anti-viral aide. Turmeric can be used as a seasoning for food (for instance, in place of curry powder). Ancient Arawak Indians used to make fresh coconut milk mixed with a little Turmeric Powder; this was given to small children in the evenings to aid digestion, prevent common skin diseases, and for its anti-viral and anti-bacteria effects.

Dill Seeds, Caraway Seeds, Blessed Thistle, Marshmallow, Anise, Alfalfa, Comfrey Leaves or Root, Red Raspberry Leaf, and Strawberry Leaf will produce good quality and nourishing milk in nursing mothers. Fenugreek Seeds as a tea (soaked overnight), taken daily, improves the quality and quantity of breast milk. Nursing Mothers should stay away from cooked or processed foods containing oxalic acid.

When these foods are cooked, this acid becomes inorganic and hampers the utilization of calcium. The following foods are perfectly safe and healthy: organic cocoa, chocolate, coffee and regular tea. Also, raw or steamed spinach, rhubarb, cauliflower and vine ripened tomatoes. Nutritional Foods for Infants and Children: Fresh cut arrowroot is very nutritious and is used for bowel complaints in infants and children. Traditional old-fashioned Sea Moss Beverage, made with fresh coconut milk, a dash of cinnamon, arrowroot and maple syrup is a nutritious total food for building bones, teeth, muscles, cartilage, spinal fluid and brain development in infants and children. In Africa a very small pinch of Cayenne Pepper is put on the tip of the tongue of newborn babies to strengthen resistant (immune system) against epidemics and diseases. The dose is increased as the child gets older. Nursing mothers should include a dash of Cayenne Pepper in their food so the (diluted) effect can be passed on through breast milk. Mothers can add a pinch of Cayenne Pepper to all family food preparations to benefit the entire family. Mothers, please have patience for one year or more breast feeding; baby will be solid, strong in bones, teeth, muscles, and especially immune system. Babies can enjoy these foods mashed up: papaya, mango, banana, coconut jelly, sour sop, sweet sop, pumpkin. As well as, cassava meal porridge with cinnamon and maple syrup. At the Health At Sunrise Healing and Learning Center we teach mothers and fa-

thers how to make organic baby foods, almond milk, and other nourishing foods, drinks, teas for infant and baby growth and wellness. Lets get back to our roots and culture! Peace and Blessings. From the Book: Basic Herbs For Health And Healing. Copyright 2009 Rahsan Abdul Hakim.

The medication is a combination of two older HIV drugs, Emtriva and Viread. The first drug shown to prevent HIV infection won the endorsement of a panel of federal advisers, clearing the way for a landmark approval in the 30-year fight against the virus that causes AIDS. In a series of votes, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended approval of the daily pill Truvada for healthy people who are at high risk of contracting HIV, including gay and bisexual men and heterosexual couples with one HIV-positive partner. The FDA is not required to follow the panels advice, though it usually does. A final decision is expected by June 15. Gilead Sciences Inc., based in Foster City, Calif., has marketed Truvada since 2004 as a treatment for people who are infected with the virus. The medication is a combination of two older HIV drugs, Emtriva and Viread. Doctors usually prescribe it as part of a drug cocktail to repress the virus. While panelists ultimately backed Truvada for prevention, The panel debated whether Truvada might lead to reduced use of condoms, the most reliable defense against HIV. The experts also questioned the drugs effectiveness in women, who have shown much lower rates of protection in studies. Panelists struggled to outline steps that would ensure patients take the pill every day. In clinical trials, patients who didnt take their medication diligently were not protected, and patients in the real world are even more likely to forget than those in studies. Mount Vernon, NY Eleven indictments were handed down by the Knox County Grand Jury on Monday, according to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher. Arraignments are scheduled for May 18, before Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster. Jeffrey L. Moore, 49, Danville, was indicted on charges of illegal manufacture of drugs, illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and endangering children for allegedly engaging in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Thatcher said Sgt. Dan Weckesser, Danville Police Department, executed a search warrant at Moores apartment on May 3, where chemicals and other equipment allegedly consistent with making meth were discovered. The child endangering charge was sought because children live in another apartment at the same premises, according to Thatcher. Meth lab neutralization officers from the Knox County Sheriffs Office assisted with the investigation and cleaned up the alleged meth lab. Andrew S. Ellis, 41, and Terra J. Ellis, 39, Sycamore Road, Mount Vernon, are both accused of illegal manufacture of drugs, illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and endangering children for allegedly engaging in the manufacture of methamphetamine. The tragic events unfolded after Efriam Gabourels mother and 14-year-old sister found the Roebling St. apartment in the William Plaza Houses in Williamsburg locked when they came home about 8 p.m., the sources said.

Gabourel 26, who has about a dozen prior arrests that include robbery, assault and burglary was inside the home and hesitant to unlock the chain to let the women in, sources said. He unlocked the chain, a police source said. When his mother and sister came in, he was moving all over the apartment. The source said the two women went to the bathroom and found Gabourels girlfriend, Liliana Belfor, 29, dead in the bathtub with her throat slit. When they went to the bathroom, he slipped out of the apartment, the source said. The horrified

women called 911 and when police arrived, they said Gabourel ran up to the roof, sources said. The cops ran upstairs to find Gabourel, who is known by friends as Banks, standing on the ledge of the roof and a few seconds later, he jumped, police said. Friends said they believe a bout of jealousy may have played a role in the murder-suicide. Banks is a cool dude, said Chris Huertas, 21. He was quiet. That girl was a pain. She was trouble. Banks couldnt even say hi to his friends without her going off. She was jealous, crazy jealous.

Grand Jury Indicts On Sex, Drug Charges

Turpen, KCSO, investigated the case. During a traffic stop on March 9, Deputy Aaron Phillips, KCSO, allegedly found Courtney R. Cotton, 24, Mount Vernon, in possession of a balloon of heroin. Cotton is accused of possession of heroin. Toby P. Meade, 52, Marengo, faces two illegal processing of drug documents charges. Thatcher said on April 6, Meade allegedly altered prescriptions for valium and ultram and then tried to fill the prescriptions at a Mount Vernon pharmacy. Patrolman Brian Weiser, Mount Vernon Police Department, investigated the case. Clifford D. Koch, 27, Mount Vernon, allegedly solicited sex from a 14-year-old girl as she was walking to school on April 24. Thatcher said the degree of Kochs felony importuning charge is enhanced by one level because he was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in 2006. Patrolman Brian Durbin, MVPD, investigated the case. According to the indictment, a juvenile court previously adjudicated Bradley A. Grubaugh, 20, a delinquent child for a rape offense that would have been a first-degree felony, if committed by an adult. As a registered sex offender, Grubaugh must notify authorities when he changes his address during his lifetime, according to Thatcher. Grubaugh was indicted on a charge of failure to provide change of address, also a first-degree felony, for allegedly failing to notify the sheriffs office of a change of address on or about April 27. Deputy Dan Selby investigated the case. David A. Gray, 20, Howard, faces unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and importuning

charges for allegedly soliciting sex from a 13-yearold girl and then engaging in sexual conduct with her in his residence on Dec. 29, 2011. Vincent Grimaldo, 19, Mount Vernon, faces unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and importuning charges for allegedly soliciting sex from a 14-year-old girl and then engaging in sexual conduct with her, on or about Dec. 25, 2011. Grimaldo also faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl on or about Nov. 25. Thatcher said the second unlawful sexual conduct charge is a misdemeanor because Grimaldo was less than four years older than the 15-year-old girl, at the time of the alleged offense. Detective Tom Bumpus, KCSO, investigated the Gray and Grimaldo cases. According to Mount Vernon Municipal Court records, Travis Baldridge, 34, Danville, pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge on March 19, and he was ordered to stay away from the victim in that case, pursuant to a temporary protection order issued on Dec. 2, 2011. Baldridge was indicted on a felony domestic violence charge and a misdemeanor charge of violating a protection order for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend on May 2. Patrolman Kyle Johnson, Fredericktown Police Department, investigated the case. Chad L. Shuley, 43, Utica, was indicted on a burglary charge. Thatcher said Shuley allegedly broke into a Mount Vernon residence in the early morning hours of May 6. Patrolman Kyle Theibert, MVPD, investigated the case.

Currently completing work on his fourth studio album, Stadium, the Senegalese-born artiste insists that he was inspired to work on an all-Reggae project after visiting Jamaica. During his time in the island, Akon visited Tuff Gong studios where he worked on projects with prominent Reggae mega stars, Damian Marley and Stephen Marley as well as Julian Marley. Additionally, he toured the Bob Marley Museum and even tweeted pictures while on the legendary premises. Internationally acclaimed Dancehall superstar, David Brooks, more popularly known as Mavado has been found guilty of two charges in relation to an assault case stemming from an incident in Montego Bay last year. The highly regarded singjay was deemed guilty of assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property when the case concluded inside the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court in St. James. As a result, Mavado was sentenced to pay a JA$80,000 fine or face a six month prison term in relation to the assault charge and JA$20,000 or six months in prison with regards to the malicious destruction of property charge. The charges are in relation to a July 2011 incident which took place less than a day after Mavado performed at Reggae Sumfest at Catherine Hall. Reportedly, Mavado and members of his entourage attacked a man, Henry Cunningham and his son, Oshane Cunningham in a moment of road rage. Both men sustained multiple injuries in the altercation and the vehicle in which they were travelling was reportedly damaged. In reaction to the verdict, a seemingly perplexed Mavado questioned the judges ruling in the matter during a radio interview on IRIE FM Monday afternoon. Mi nuh understand how mi get a guilty verdict. LLOYD King Jammys James, Agustus Gussie Clarke, Robert Livingston, and Donovan Germain are some of the names that come to mind whenever talk of contemporary reggaes most successful producers comes up. Their productions dominated the reggae/dancehall market for over 30 years, topping pop and reggae charts worldwide. Recently, Clarke and Germain gave their views on the current state of reggae music production. Their opinions were partially based on the quality of music being released compared to eras regarded by many as the golden age of reggae and dancehall. According to Clarke, A producer is an individual who uses his creative input from the genesis of a musical project to the final product. He is the one who is involved in the entire creation of a project, hence making that project successful. He added: A producer isnt someone who buys a riddim then gives it to an engineer to monitor then steals the copyright and takes the credit. Unfortunately this seems to be the standards of some producers nowadays. Clarke stated that this policy has contributed to the deterioration of dancehall/reggae. He believes it is the main reason music, created 30 years ago, has more value than most of what is recorded today. The Me factor is taking over. No one listens anymore, everyone is their own manager, engineer and producer, said Clarke, who began producing in the early 1970s as a teenaged student at Kingston College. He started out producing acts like Big Youth, but in the 1980s he hit it big with the Mighty Diamonds Pass The Kutchie. Clarke was one of the top producers in the 1990s, releasing hit

songs by Shabba Ranks, Gregory Isaacs and J C Lodge. He went on to say that unlike he and his contemporaries, todays producers seem unaware that they are not only competing against their peers at home. If the aim is to create a Billboard hit, one has to realize that they are competing with the Jay Zs, Beyoncs and Madonnas of the world, he said. Germain also started producing music in the 1970s. He said back then, it took years of practice and quality productions to become a respected producer, like Clement Sir Coxson Dodd, Arthur Duke Reid and Lee Scratch Perry. I will only call one a producer when I see he/she consistently making hit records for at least five years. The quality and the standard must be very fitting too... anyone who produces anything less is an apprentice as far as Im concerned, he said. Germain said when he entered the music business it was not about buying riddims in order to gain the title of record producer. Germain heads Penthouse Records, which is responsible for launching the career of Buju Banton. He also had a golden run in the 1990s, producing hits by Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Garnet Silk, and Wayne Wonder. He and Clarke have strong catalogues that have already been the subject of reissues. Will most of the reggae/dancehall music of today be viable 30 years from now? Clarke does not think so. I dont think some of the music being produced today will be around for the next 10 years, he said. Reason being, they were not made with the concept that was being used 20 years ago. Their lyrical content has to do with the trends of today, therefore as soon as those trends go out of style and mind so will the lyrics.

Ex-Policeman Mark St. Aubyn Russell has been ordered extradited to Jamaica after a failed appeal in the Southern District Court of New York. Russell and another policeman have been accused of having a hand in the July 2007 killing of 18-year-old Ravin Thompson by members of a joint police/military team in Whitfield Town, St Andrew. Eyewitnesses said Thompson was shot at his aunts gate and put in a police vehicle to be taken to hospital. His injury was not considered life-threatening as he was reportedly shot in the shoulder. However, when his relatives arrived at the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was taken, they were greeted with the sight of his lifeless body in the police vehicle. A probe by the Bureau of Special Investigations later suggested that the police had stopped on the way to the hospital and pumped more shots into Thompsons body. Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn ruled in 2009 that Russell and another policeman be charged with murder in relation to Thompsons death, but both men fled the island before the ruling was handed down. Llewellyn said that Russell was subsequently held by US authorities on an immigration offence and his name was forwarded during the normal sharing of information between her office and the US authorities. The DPP, acting for the Jamaican Government, then made a request to the US Government for Russells extradition, but he challenged

his extradition on several grounds. However, his arguments did not hold in the US court and he was ordered sent back to Jamaica to face the murder charge. He lodged an appeal in an attempt to be allowed to stay in the United States. But on April 23, the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York rejected his appeal. Petitioner Mark St Aubyn Russells petition for a Writ of Habeus Corpus is denied. The Clerk of Court is respectfully directed to enter judgment in favor of respondent and close the case, a ruling from the court stated. Llewellyn hailed the decision as a landmark case and praised the Extradition Department of her office, saying she was proud of the work they did. She also thanked the US authorities for facilitating the request. Certainly, in my time as the DPP, this is the first time we have had a police officer extradited, Llewellyn said. She also stated that the whereabouts of the second suspect are unknown. We know that he has fled the jurisdiction, but we dont know where he is.

Leighton Livity Coke walked from the Supreme Court a free man, setting off celebratory shouts of freedom from scores of Tivoli Gardens residents who converged on the King Street building where the brother of their former don, Christopher Dudus Coke, had been on trial. About half an hour earlier, and mere minutes after Justice David Fraser found Coke not guilty of gunrelated charges, the crowds started cheering wildly, breaking the relative quiet around the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston. Soldiers and police personnel on the scene went on high alert in readiness for any eventuality. The last time a Coke, Leightons father Lester Jim Brown Coke, went on trial at the Supreme Court in the

his is the fifth article in the series On the Way to Jamaicas 50th. Throughout the series, I condensed my remarkable findings on the lives and achievements of Jamaicans dating back to the 18th century and what a journey it has been? My state of mind is lucid as those ingeniously eminent men and women whose lives I have become so encapsulated by intrigue has become my emissary. Whereas the zest to delve into the past is addictive, there is so much happening in the present that I am compelled to close the chronicles of the 18th century and embark on the achievements of the present and what a way to commence the series than with Child Month! Annually, the island nation of Jamaica recognizes the month of May as Child Month and this year, the National Child Month Committee has commissioned 2012 to celebrate children under the theme Jamaica 50: Celebrate Our Children. I am enthralled by the theme for its poignant focus on children and their imminent place in society. The proverb It takes a village to raise a child is candidly captured in a conversation Frederick J. Goodall of Mocha Dad Media had with an elderly lady sitting next to him while on a plane to Charlotte, North Carolina as they talked about their children. I have 7 children, she said. But I only gave birth to two. Did you adopt the other five? I asked. No, I just started feeding some of the neighborhood kids and they never left, she said with a hearty laugh. This genuine response sets the perfect tone for our 50th year of independence in recognition of our children LOVE. At the core of human nature is love that dispels all threatening elements aimed at our children. The rudimentary coil that envelope the developmental core of our society is our children and the onus is on us to steer them toward forward-thinking. With this forwardthinking approach in mind, our children must be candidly portrayed as the potent solution that has been the driving force behind our nations historical and semi centennial era. One may ask what our children have done

to deserve this acclaim. The scenario is simply this. The children born pre/post independence Jamaica were privileged to gain excellence in all spheres of the education system from Accounting, Clerical, Construction, Education, General, Health, Information Technology, Legal, Management, Sales/Marketing, Communication and others too numerous to mention. The guiding principle is and always has been hard work and determination. The Ministry of Educations Every Child Can Learn, Every Child Must Learn slogan is commendably parallel to 50 years. It is important to mention our children who are termed special in our society. The severities

Our children deserve love in its purest form. It is inconceivable to many the levels of abuse and hardships that is being meted out to children - poverty, joblessness, multiple children in low income houses, incest, high rates of suicides, failing grades, low self esteem and immense peer pressure are some of the factors that should be addressed for Child Month. The positive elements will remain positive, but the disparaging and degrading subterfuge to solve these problems cannot be solved in a vacuum. The solution demands a collective effort it begins with one. Peaches and Herbs One Child of Love lyrics is so appropriate to our many children who have that glimmer of hope for the future as well as those who are missing out on the privileges of live. One child thats born in peace, one babe that knows no war, A healthy and a happy one, born with no misery, Thats what we live to see; thats what were praying for.

1980s, celebratory shots rang outside the building as heavily armed gunmen hoisted the elder Coke on their shoulders, following his acquittal on a murder charge. As Coke left the courthouse in a green sport utility vehicle with his attorneys, Priya Levers, Carolyn Reid-Cameron and Chukwueneka Cameron, people began appearing, as if from nowhere, waving frantically and shouting over one another. The vehicle slowed as it drove onto King Street, allowing supporters a glimpse of Coke, who waved back, before the vehicle sped off. Coke had been on trial since last year on allegations that he and other men fired on the security forces during a joint police/military operation to serve an arrest warrant on his

of mental and physical disorders have grown increasingly higher over the years but through an undying LOVE for children, some key persons have formed non-profit organizations/ foundations to assist parents of children with an anomaly of disabilities. The enormous sacrifices made by members of these entities compounded by minimal funding have severely impeded the progress for a select few. While the awareness is seemingly daunting, these organizations have also partnered with learning institutions to systematically engage students into becoming more accepting of children who are different. To date, these positive results are documented by print and electronic media and will form the basis of discussion in 50 years.

A child thats so full of fun and just as free as he wants to be And well give him peace, with all we can give. And our dream will be, this world will see, One Child of love, yeah One Child of Love And well give him hope, with each day we live.

To ALL parents and caregivers, I implore you to love your children and love them hard. The moments you share with them are priceless and can never be replaced. In fact, those moments of despair are nothing but a recurring decimal. Your faith will overcome all odds. Its our time Jamaica 50: Celebrate Our Children

brother in May of 2010. He was arrested following Christopher Cokes extradition to the US in June 2010 to face drug and gunrunning charges. Christopher Coke will be sentenced later this month in a federal court in New York after pleading guilty to lesser racketeering charges. The length of Leighton Cokes trial in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court was due partly to his alleged beating by soldiers in the Horizon Adult Remand Centre in Kingston three months ago. The soldiers claimed they were acting in self-defence. Coke was freed after Justice Fraser, among other things, rejected the identification evidence given by the police officers during the trial that was closed to the pub-

lic.

The 34-year-old Coke, who is the father of six children, had argued in his defence that he was not in the community when the security forces and gunmen waged battle in May 2010. The court, however, rejected this defence, but also threw out the identification evidence on which the police were relying. Coke could have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment had he been convicted.Following his acquittal, Cokes sister Sandy lauded the attorneys on the case, stating that the court has proven what was known all along. The police fabricated the charges against him. We knew all along that he was not guilty, she said.

The name Merritone Music identifies the famous Merritone Sound System, which originated in Morant Bay over 55 years ago. testimony to Merritones unerring instinct for quality, as they (the artistes) are masters of their craft and are as good as one can get. Separate and apart from its talent exposure, Merritone played a vital role in supporting local artistes by way of introducing their latest recorded releases at Merritone dances, as it was virtually impossible for these artistes to get radio play for their recordings in those days. Who can forget the great Scratch Lee Perry bringing new Bob Marley releases

Merritone has the distinction to have played, and shared billing with some of the legendary soundmen of the era. Soundmen such as Sir Coxone Down Beat, Tom The Great Sebastian, V Rocket, Count Nick, Sky Rocket, Duke Reid The Trojan, Docs, Lord Koos, King Edwards, Prince Buster, and The Mellow Canary, to name a few. These were the pioneers who helped to mould the sound system into a Jamaican phenomenon, which has become the number one source of entertainment for Jamaicans of all classes. It was evident from the onset that Merritone chose to follow a path that made it different from the great sounds of the era in that, Merritone opted for a unique quality of sound and a varied musical selection. The tonal quality of Merritones sound was more melodic versus the raw power emphasized by the other sound systems. Merritone presented the music selected with sensibility and purposeful organization that became their hallmark, charting a course that they have maintained and which has sustained them to this day. Merritone has always had an eye for talent and an insatiable appetite for any good quality music produced. It was therefore no surprise and a natural progression for Merritone, when it started to host its talent series at the VIP Club in Kingston. Some of the talents, who emerged from these talent exposure series in the late sixties, were Cynthia Schloss, Beresford Hammond, The Tamlins, Jacob Miller, Ruddy Thomas and The Mighty Diamonds. These artistes are

hot off the press to the Turntable Club, Merritones home base? As a record producer, some of Merritones finest releases are Cynthia Schloss Love Me Forever, Chained To A Memory, Surround Me With Love and Hopeton Lewis Grooving Out On Life. The legendary Turntable Club, which operated for over 28 years, is another Merritone winner! In its heyday, the club was visited by luminaries such as prime ministers, movie stars, and a host of other famous personalities for example, Bob Marley, Michael Manley, Calvin Lockhart and Karl Parboosingh, to name but a very few. The Club was conceptualized at a time in Jamaicas history when Jamaicans could afford to, and knew how to dance, and to have fun. TT as it was affectionately called, was opened seven days a week and had a policy never to turn off the music until the last patron left. Regretfully, Turnatable was forced to close its doors due to the deterioration of the area in which it was located since inception. The mass migration of the 70s & 80s created a whole new market for Merritone Music in North America & Canada, and Merritones foray overseas has been a success story, thanks to the indefatigable energy of Winston Merritone Blake. Continuing its pioneering ways, Merritone was the first Jamaican Sound System to venture overseas taking merri music to cities such as London, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, New York, Hartford, Toronto, L. A, Atlanta, Boston, Seattle, and Washington D.C.

We welcome you with great respect and love. Mother welcomes you, heart-to-heart and soul-to-soul. Lost, great, ancient communication. I Corinthians 6:19-21(KJV) Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods. The question that women are asking me now is: Mother, what can I do to lose this fat? (They point to their belly, protruding abdomen, and midriff, thick rolls of fat.) This question is hot, heavy, very sensitive, very important. Let us approach it as sensitive and important. First and foremost, Mothers, Women and Daughters Lets address the whole person: In simplistic terms, there are three aspects of your reality: The Father/ Mother, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. So you are not just taking care of your spirit-mind-body just for your own personal sake. Just like mothers who are pregnant have to consider the indwelling baby when making choices (eat, drink, play, rest, dress, think, feel, etc.), so it is on a daily basis you have an indwelling Holy Alignment within you, that you need to take into

consideration with you make choices (eat, drink, play, rest, dress, think, feel, etc.). Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you Please take time to think and meditate on these things before you go forward with food and life choices. Eating indiscriminately is not going to work. Step 1 Stop & Look: Count Calories, what is high in fat, high in concentrated carbohydrates, high in sodium, void of nourishment. What is food-fuel. What is fiber. Step 2 Write It Down: Make a list and check it twice, of everything you have consumed on a daily basis. Review this at the end of each week. Step 3 Keep Moving: Movement assists in distributing nutrients, blood, and energy to all parts of your body; as well as tones, firms muscles and eliminates stagnant cell waste and fat. Calisthenics, Taiji Chuan, Walking, Swimming. Step 4 A Time To Rest: Light food or no food after 7pm. Tea is okay. The body (Spirit, mind, organs, central nervous system, digestive system, etc.) need time to rest, restore, rejuvenate without processing food. Eat more nourishing, and smaller portions. Include these in your foods daily: Powdered Kelp (aka dehydrat-

ed sea vegetables), sprinkle on vegetables, soups, fish; a good source of trace minerals such as chromium and iodine, and is a natural thyroid stimulant for over/or under active thyroid. Cayenne, a pinch in all foods, stimulates saliva, stimulates digestion and accelerates your metabolism, carries nutrients to all parts of the body (head to toe) safely. After Dinner Bitters, taken an hour after meals, to assist in the digestive process, the assimilation of nutrients, and elimination of cell and food waste. Bitters come in tonics (like Sundial Koromantee Bitters), Green Teas: Hysson, Sencha, Ceressee, and other digestive teas: Roasted Dandelion Root, Jasmine Flowers, Hyssop, Lemon Grass. In between meals sip on this combination: Chickweed, Ginger Root, Yerba Matte, one ounce of each to make one gallon, simmer, strain, add a tad bit of Cayenne, bottle, refrigerate. If desired, add the juice and pulp of three to five freshly squeezed lemons and raw honey. This combination works off fat, flab, cellulite, stimulates digestion, and provides body/ mind nourishment and energy. As always, it is so very important, and spiritually imperative, to

incorporate prayer, meditation and re-alignment with The Holy Spirit on a regular (daily) basis for encouragement, strength, peace and balance. The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26.

My brothers, my sisters, in a previous article I wrote about how the credit bureaus and a lot of collection agencies were breaking the law by extending the time limit for which negative information is reported to your credit file. By now you know this practice can affect you in a negative way. This process is also known as re-aging. Today I am going to show you how to prevent your credit score from decreasing by explaining how to prevent a creditor from reporting negative information on your credit file. Reggae artist Gyptian released a song a couple of years ago entitled These are some serious times and my he wasnt joking. A lot of you are finding it difficult to pay your bills on time and because of that a lot of creditors are reporting late payments to the credit bureaus which is causing your credit scores to decrease. If you know you are not going to be able to

make a payment on time contact your creditor and ask them if they can re-age your account. If a creditor agrees to do this, then what they will do is change a current due date to a later due date. For example, if your credit card bill is due on June 5th then your creditor will re-age the account so it is due on June 30th. The worst thing that can happen is your creditor says they are unwilling to re-age your account

and if that happens then let them know that the credit reform law signed by President Obama in May of 2009 states that they have to wait 60 days before they can report a payment as late to the credit bureaus. Now that does not mean you should wait the full 60 days to make a payment. You should still make every effort to at least make the payment within 30 days. You should only mention the credit reform law if the creditor refuses to re-age your account. You always want to try and have a positive relationship with these credit card gangsters. African Vibz - The riches of my continent

By African Prince

oday I just feel like talking about my village or my continent as its called by Europe and America. My continent is the richest and the most beautiful continent in the world, but Europe and America have been taking advantage of our riches without given back. The time has come for China to explore my continent, but China is taking but at least they are giving back. These are some few mineral resources found in just one country of my continent Cobalt, Copper, Niobium, Tantalum, Petroleum, Industrial and Gem Diamonds, Gold, Silver, Zinc, Manganese, Tin, Uranium, Coal, Hydropower, Timber,

Russia, the second most-active emerging-market power, is gaining. While trade with Africa is only $3 billion a year (up threefold since 2000), Russian companies flush with cash have sunk more than $5 billion into buying up African assets since 2000and thats not counting $3.5 billion of oil-exploration deals coming online by the end of the de-

cade. (Over the same period, China has put $6.7 billion into Africa, but much of that money has been sunk into infrastructure projects like telecom, electric power, water conservation, transportation and agriculture). The Chinese are doing what the European and America didnt do when they came to my continent, they European didnt build road, hospitals, schools, they didnt do anything to empower the people of my continent but they took all the resources they could carry. China is correcting all the past mistakes and even though the deal is never fair with all these imperialist, we respect the Chinese for what they are doing. Chinese dont give money to the African government; because they know if they do so, that money will never serve the purpose of the population. So they design a project, make proposal and finally take care of the construction themselves. Trade between China and Africa has increased more than six-fold during the past decade to $120 billion in 2011. While other rich nations impose conditions before aid is given,

Chinas relationship with African countries is strictly a business one. The African Union has inaugurated its newly built headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The entire $200m project was funded by China as a gift to the African Union. We still have fresh memories of the destruction and killing orchestrated in Libya in the name of democracy. The biggest democracy in the world dont care when they want resources from my continent even if they have to burn the whole country down and kill all the citizens to get few barrel of oil they will do it. China is showing us a different face of partnership. This is a brief story of my continent and continent is Africa the richest and most beautiful continent in the world.

St. Johns, Antigua (CMC) The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) broke their silence on Chris Gayles pending return to the regional team, saying they were pleased the estranged batsman had made himself available to play. Gayle announced last week he would pull out of his contract with English county Somerset in order to make himself available for the limited overs phase of West Indies tour of England, and in all forms of cricket in the future. Directors of the West Indies Cricket Board recently met by teleconference and are pleased that consistent with his previous commitment, Mr. Chris Gayle has made himself available for selection to the West Indies team, a WICB statement said. The Board believes that Mr. Gayles stated commitment to West Indies cricket will be an asset to the team and looks forward to his contribu-

Yohan Blakes Warning

DOHA, Qatar (AFP) Asafa Powell, a world-class sprinter who has achieved a lot but has failed to deliver so much more on the world and Olympic stage, has vowed to approach this summers London Games like his last. A gold medal showing in the British capital would be a fine accolade for the 29-year-old Jamaican, a former world recordholder whose career has been overshadowed by countryman Usain Bolt, with yet another Jamaican, Yohan Blake, rising to prominence last year and gaining the No 1 world ranking over 100m. Its not my last shot (at Olympic gold), but Ill be approaching it as if its my last, said Powell, a sculpted 1.90m (6ft 3in) figure of a man who has a personal best of 9.72sec set in Lausanne in 2008, the fourth fastest time in the history of the event.Ill be going all out. But Im only 29, so I

ual matters before the Jamaicans actual return to the team. Among these residual matters is expected be Gayles role in a multi-million dollar West Indies Players Association (WIPA) lawsuit against the WICB, relating to the issuing of No Objection Certificates. In correspondence to Gayle last month, the WICB raised concerns about the lawsuit and Gayles continued participation in the litigation process. At the time, Gayle said he could not possibly contemplate withdrawing unilaterally from proceedings, contending that such a move would affect all West Indies players. Gayle says he will be available for selection once the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament ends on May 28. have a few more years in me. An Olympic gold medal winner as part of Jamaicas 4x100m relay team in Beijing in 2008, Powell also won relay gold in the 2009 Berlin worlds and silver in 2007. For a sprinter who held the 100m world record between June 2005 and May 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74sec, respectively, and who has consistently broken the 10-second barrier in competition (around 74 times), Powells individual medal haul of two world bronzes could be described as disappointing. Powell raced the 100m at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in Beijing but finished fifth on both occasions, after failing to overcome pre-race nerves and fully convert his obvious on-track abilities into podium showings. He was quick to play down any run-off against American 2004 Olympic champion Justin Gatlin at todays Diamond League opener at Qatar Sports Club. Im not focused on anybody else, Powell insisted. Im focused on my own technique and finishing my race healthy.Bolts always there, hes the man to beat, but in the back of my head out there, Im trying to focus on myself. Having dipped under 9.80sec on no less than eight occasions and under 9.90sec more than 30 times, Powell bettered his own world record in Doha in 2006, but the chances of that re-occurring here today are highly unlikely, especially given his most recent injury concern. Powell, coached since 2001 by Stephen Francis as part of the MVP Track and Field Club based at the University of Technology (UTech) in Jamaica, was meant to run the 200m at last weeks Jamaica Invitational meet, only to pull out at the last minute. Powell added: This year is the Olympic Games. You have to be very prepared.

World 100 metres champion Yohan Blake stormed to the second-fastest time in the world this year to win the 100 metres at the Cayman Invitational. The 22-year-old clocked 9.84 seconds to finish ahead of fellow Jamaican Michael Frater (10.05) and Trinidadian Keston Bledman (10.06), who were second and third, respectively. Blakes time comes just a week after Olympic 100m champion and World record holder Usain Bolt clocked a world-leading 9.82 at the JN Invitational in Kingston. Just the other day, I was telling Usain that I am going to come out and show him something because we are friends like that, said Blake, who ran a world-leading 19.91 seconds at the same meet in Jamaica. Blake has installed himself as one of the main rivals to Bolt ahead of the London Olympics later this year, following outstanding performances last season.

loyd Brevett, the string bassist in the influential Jamaican band the Skatalites, who played on the first recordings of Bob Marley and the Wailers, died May 3 at a hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. He was 80. According to Jamaican news reports, Mr. Brevett had suffered a stroke in March, two weeks after his 32-year-old son, Okeene, was shot to death outside the familys home in Kingston. The Skatalites, who included trombonist Don Drummond, tenor saxophonists Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook, keyboardist Jackie Mitoo and drummer Lloyd Knibb, influenced such later British and American bands as the Specials, the Toasters, No Doubt, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Madness. Singer Doreen Shaffer and alto saxophonist Lester Sterling are the last surviving members of the original group. The Skatalites or Ska-talites as they were sometimes billed were named for ska, a brassy music style that fused American rhythm-andblues, jazz and gospel music with the off-beat rhythm of mento, a Jamaican folk music often compared to calypso. As the house musicians for Jamaican record labels, Studio One and Treasure Island, Mr. Brevett and the Skatalites backed up such singers as Toots and the Maytals, Lee Perry, Alton Ellis and Jackie Opel. Mr. Brevett and the Skatalites accompanied a teenage vocal group, the Wailers, featuring future reggae stars Marley and Peter Tosh, on their first recording session in 1963. Simmer Down, a song from the session, implored Jamaicas urban rude

Comin Home Baby, a minorkeyed hit for jazz flutist Herbie Mann, became Christine Keeler in a timely reference to the showgirl at the heart of the United Kingdoms John Profumo scandal. The Beatles song I Should Have Known Better became Anniversary Ska after they played it in a Jamaican Independence Day parade. The original Skatalites only performed in Jamaican night clubs from June 1964 to July 1965. Mr. Brevett recorded and toured in the 1970s with Alphonsos group, the Soul Vendors and singer Ellis. He recorded with several former Skatalites for his solo album, African Roots, a compilation of reggae instrumentals. When English bands such as Madness and the Specials revived the ska style in the 1970s, Mr. Brevett and other original members found renewed interest in their music. Mr. Brevett retired from the group in 2004. Reviewing the bands 1995 recording Skavoovie, Washington Post music critic Geoffrey Himes wrote, the two Lloyds [Brevett

and the drummer Knibb] once again serve up the push and pull rhythms with their emphasis on the off-beat that first defined ska as something different than North American R&B and set the stage for reggae. Lloyd George Brevett was born Aug. 1, 1931, in the Jones Town neighborhood of Kingston. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, and several children. Mr. Brevetts father was an instrument maker and jazz bassist who taught the youngster how to make basses. Early in his music career, Mr. Brevett participated in late-night jam sessions in a Rastafarian encampment in the Kingston hills.
