ive music and entertainment is surging in Lincoln with new venues mixed with traditional offerings, familiar faces and tunes.

South of downtown
Two music sites dominate the Sterling Pointe Shopping Center - many residents still refer to this as the Raleys Shopping Center - on Highway 65. Familiar venue Beach Hut Deli at 885 South Highway 65 plans more open air music this year as the weather clears. Thursdays will feature local artists such as guitarist Ken Koenig, singer/songwriter Billy Buckman and Heroes Last Mission with their original music selections. Showtimes run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Open mic reappears this year on Sunday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with artists Koenig and Buckman alternating nights to provide inspiration and occasional backup for aspiring local songsters.

Downtown
In the brand new but old category, the recently reopened Beermans Restaurant at 645 Fifth St. across from Beermans Plaza in the heart of downtown has ambitious plans for the year. The restaurant opened in early April and is playing to capacity, according to co-owner Mike Drust. Were filling the house and that makes me happy, he said. Next up is the grand opening of the second floor theater and dining room on Thursday, May 3 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Drust plans to roll out several entertainment opportunities, beginning with a murder-mystery dinner theater by midMay. The show and dining will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Later in the month, Drust plans to open the upstairs to a variety of music, beginning on Thursdays with a rock band. A deejay will follow on Fridays and a western band will play on Saturdays. Hours will run from 9:30 p.m. to closing around 1:30 or 2 a.m., according to Drust. Live theater is also in the plans as Drust is working with the Sun City Lincoln Hills Players Group in hopes of hosting theater performances this year.

Beach Hut Deli owner Tom Stilko also plans to install a small outdoor tiki hut-type stage at the corner of his patio. Stilko reports that he has some Saturday afternoon entertainment planned for this season. Hes playing the schedule

by ear.
Sterling Cafe at 731 Ster-

ling Parkway is a newcomer to the local music scene since February with its karaoke on Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 to 11 p.m. The nights have been wildly successful with

great singers and great audiences, according to karaoke manager Marianne Combs. Live and local entertainment is fast becoming a staple in Lincoln. Support your neighbors and stay tuned. Theres always more to come.

And Drust said that, within the next two to three weeks, he plans to open a murder mystery dinner theater running from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Were looking for customer feedback, Drust said. Well make changes where we can. Kims Country Kitchen at 537 G. St. continues its Taco Tuesday tradition from 5 to 9 p.m. with live local bands offering a mix of R&B, country and rock n roll. Saturdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Kims showcase duos and trios offering a blend of ballads, some oldies, Beatles fare, country and blues.

What is happening to the entrepreneurial spirit in America? A

n entrepreneur is an owner or manager of a business enterprise who makes money through risk and initiative. The term was originally first defined by the Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon. Entrepreneur is a term applied to a person who is willing to help launch a new venture or enterprise and accept full responsibility for the outcome. Jean-Baptiste Say, a French economist, is believed to have coined the word entrepreneur in the 19th Century. He defined an entrepreneur as one who undertakes an enterprise, especially a contractor, acting as intermediately between capital and labor With the unemployment rates the way they are, we need to look at other options in self sufficiency. I believe there is a power that lies within us

all to change and adapt in times of need. Let the survival instinct wake up and come alive. In todays weak job market, one in two college graduates are jobless or underemployed. Many folks over 40 who have been laid off due to employment cutbacks, company closings and the poor economy wonder what they can do to make a living. The answer for many might be to get into a commission-based business. This is a business that you can control the outcome. These types of enterprises exist in many facets of our economy.

Careers in sales, marketing, insurance real estate, rare items, handyman and so forth are worth considering. For many years, the education system has taught us and our children to get a job and work for someone. It could be the major corporations, the government or small businesses in our very own community. Most schools teach us to specialize in one thing. The idea of this article is to see ourselves empower our own lives and engage the self-reliant spirit and make things happen for ourselves. The good news is that there are many types of established companies that will train an entrepreneurial individual and act as your partner in your career. Enterprises that teach these skills that lead to income are looking for

good people who will serve their customers for the benefit of all. A happy customer is a return customer. These skills will help a person in any endeavor they may ultimately choose when the economy comes back in full force. In the current economy, I believe there is greater opportunity for people who are willing to develop their work ethic than ever. There will always be a need for thinkers, doers and leaders. We all know that there are certain undeniable laws of cause and effect. If you do proactive activities on a regular basis, the effects will be measurable. I.e., if you spend more money than you have on an ongoing basis, you go broke. If you have a good product at good prices, give good service and stay in touch, you make mon-

ey and are happy. These principals work in any economy. Find something you love to do and do it with passion. Learn everything you can about it, tell people what you have and ask for business. The Internet is a great resource for learning about starting a business. With the advent of the Internet, online businesses are probably the easiest way to start and very much less expensive in terms of start-up cost than an offline counterpart. You can also think of trading on eBay or overstock. A franchise is also a good option if you dont want to start from scratch. Dont be afraid to experiment with prices. A franchise is a great idea although the start-up capital is way too high for most people.

Find a direct selling company that will provide you the training and support. Also, find a personal mentor that you can trust. Most direct selling companies have low start up capital compared to a traditional brick and mortar business. You can also break even rather quickly compared to the traditional business. America has always been considered the land of opportunity and I believe it still is. If you dont have a job, consider creating your own and along the way you just might create opportunities for others as well. Good luck!

No time for excuses, just time to get organized

BY PAUL APFEL

HOME MAINTENANCE SERIES

work you built to justify your income and expenses on your tax returns for 2011. Filed for an extension? Well, youve just postponed the inevitable. And you still face the process to assemble the paperwork required to file. If you use the shoebox filing system, you and your tax preparer know the angst and anxiety associated with this annual document-gathering and tax-paying effort. Why not end the random filing that turns your documents into clutter? Resolve quickly that this will be the year you get organized.

Awash in clutter? Too much paperwork on your desk, end table or hiding in various drawers throughout your home or apartment? And, for how many years have you been determined to, once and for all, get organized?

Organizing works for everyone

Dispense with the notion that you need to be wealthy to derive benefit from good organization. If you earn income from any source and you take care of yourself and a few others, you need to plan. And you need to let others know how that plan works and where the papers that support it are located.

Start now
This time of year is a good time to start. As you are fresh from your April 17, 2012 encounter with the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board, you should remember well the mountain of paper-

If you are the primary record-keeper and billpayer in the home, consider your family first. Although we do not favorably consider an untimely demise, it happens. We are not immortal. We have accidents, get sick, become infirm, and in doing so, lose some or all of our capacity to care for our families. It is just not fair to expect them to begin caring for you while simultaneously looking for the records to pay the bills, file the taxes and so on. And, if you are a caregiver for someone else, have them help you

assemble an organizing plan while they still have their wits about them. As one who has been an estate executor, I can testify that good records and clear instructions are essential. Begin now to determine your family member or friends personal wishes and gather the financial information and legal paperwork needed to handle their affairs, now and when they pass on. Parents and young adults also have compelling reasons to develop good organization habits to understand and keep track of important

records. Not only do you need them for taxes, youll need them when you buy a home or homes. And you need them as you provide the familys daily bread and butter. An added benefit is your personal peace of mind plus the positive training and example you provide for your heirs.

Help is available
Numerous books, software and other reference works are available online and in stores to help you along. So, to get you started, here are a few tips on how to begin your personal de-cluttering.

As you identify and assemble all your critical personal papers, you might find the de-cluttering process so attractive that youll invade the garage, attic and closet.
First, gather your documents and include the following: Will Power of attorney Trust documents Birth certificates Copies of social security cards Marriage certificate Divorce papers Passports Military discharge or retirement orders Medical directives. Now youre ready to update the other papers you use in your daily financial lives. These include up-todate copies of the following: Bank statements Insurance contracts and policies Investment account statements Pension, profit sharing or 401(k) statements Prior year tax returns If you use a safe-deposit box, make sure your authorization cards are current and include all who might need access. Check with the bank for their policies regarding access upon your death or impairment. Finally, ensure that your spouse, domestic partner or other family members know where to find all the documents. Loose-leaf binders with indexed tabs are useful in filing the documents youve gathered. If you feel comfortable with electronic storage, digitizing records is an emerging trend. Computer-savvy record keepers can find single copy scanners as well as those that handle multiple document copies. With the recordgathering and tax-filing season a recent memory, make a firm commitment to de-clutter your life and organize your personal papers to minimize your day-to-day financial anxiety and plan for the future. Lincolns annual spring clean-up day is Saturday, May 12 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the west side of the Lincoln Regional Airport. This is a free event for Lincoln residents only. Other acceptable items include non-refrigerated appliances, furniture, PVC pipes not exceeding four inches in diameter and five feet in length, lumber and miscellaneous rubbish. Unacceptable items include tires, refrigerated appliances,

Next, locate a secure place to store your documents. A safe deposit box works for items you do not need on a daily basis such as legal documents, birth and marriage certificates and the like. For those items you use more often, a fire-proof safe may meet your need but any secure location is acceptable.

Local business leaders optimistic about future expansion, success

efore we get into the exciting events and business promotional opportunities the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting this month, Id like to update you on the results of one of the boards 2012 strategic initiatives. As part of a member outreach plan, the chambers Executive Director Bob Romness and I visited the Chambers Top 25 businesses, based on the number of employees, to better understand their challenges, insights and the impact this economy is having on their business. Clearly, their success impacts our entire communitys economic environment.

Bob and I are truly grateful for the time and candor these business leaders shared with us. On a personal note, I count this outreach assignment as one of the most rewarding and productive experiences in my many years serving on the chamber board. Lincoln is headquarters for businesses engaged in the full spectrum of national and international economies. The optimism they expressed

regarding the potential for future expansion and economic success was very encouraging. Yes, there were some expression of flat revenues but the common message from these business leaders was the importance of an economic development strategy to advance local business. Bob and I will plan meetings with our medium and small business leaders and owners to

compare their challenges, needs, and insights with what we have just learned. I look forward to that exchange and to sharing this valuable information with you. In the meantime, your chamber is busy preparing for the Shoppers Expo on May 26 at Lincoln Crossing Marketplace. This years event will include a Health and Wellness Faire with something of value and interest for everyone including

the chance to win great prizes! If you havent signed up to participate, please call the chamber office to find out how you can benefit from having a premier location during this popular annual customer-building event. Our next NetMix will be at the office of Mark Schumacher/Edward Jones on May 9 at his Twelve Bridges office. We hope you will all join this celebration as well as our ongoing ribbon cuttings. And a warm chamber welcome for our newest members: Together Growing, Coldwell Banker, Royal T Builders, Inc. Lincoln Hills Community Church, Lincoln Area Archives Museum,

SBDC Greater Sierra Region, Eskaton Lodge Granite Bay and Baxters Event Center in Lincoln! We had five ribbon cuttings in April, another great way to network with businesses in and around the Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville areas. If you have something special to celebrate; new business, new manager, new location, expansion, anniversary, whatever the celebration, call Terri at the chamber office (6452035) and schedule yours today! See you around Lincoln.

Help protect your home and possibly save money

G
et ready for spring storms, and check for insurance discounts, too If youre like most Americans, your home is your single greatest investment. Protecting it from severe weather damage makes sense in terms of finances and the safety of your family. And, some storm preparations also could help lower your homeowners insurance. Here are a few steps to take before a storm approaches to help reduce damage, avoid an
Eva Lin Insurance Issues

insurance claim and, in some cases, possibly save on your homeowners insurance: Regularly examine your roof and replace lose shingles, tiles and slate. If your roof is more than 20 years old, you may want to have it inspected. Replacing your roof may save you money on your

homeowners insurance. Move any loose items from your yard that can become flying debris. Grills, patio furniture, bicycles, planters, garbage cans, etc. should be relocated to your garage or inside your home. If it cant be moved, strap it down. Check that doors and sliding glass doors are secure. Not only will you help ensure that doors stay closed tight in a heavy wind, but simply having a solid exterior door and secondary locks on sliding doors may earn

you a discount on your insurance. Know how and be prepared to turn off the power and water in the event of a storm to avoid voltage irregularities, which can damage your computer, TV and other electrical appliances. Keep trees and shrubs around your home well trimmed. Remove damaged or dead limbs, especially those over your home. Make sure gutters are properly secured and free of debris that can prevent proper drainage.

Keep important papers, including insurance documents, deeds and titles, in a safe or waterproof container that you can grab quickly in case you need to evacuate. While theres no way to predict exactly when severe weather will strike, taking these simple steps can help to minimize its impact and damage and maybe even save you money on repairs. Your homeowners or renters insurance may cover some of the above if problems are due to natu-

ral disaster or catastrophic failure, so check with your insurance agent to see which coverage is best for you. If you have any questions about the tips above or any other insurance related question, please contact Eva Lin, License # 0F13662, at (916) 7907635, email line1@ nationwide.com or visit www.nationwide.com/ evalin.

Author uses native plants as tasty treats and healthful remedies

hen the new year rolls around, thoughts turn to losing weight or exercising more. But author Alicia Funk has embarked on a different journey. My challenge was to eat something wild every day or use it for health to show it can be done and that it is fun and worth doing, she said. Funk, author of Living Wild Gardening, Cooking and Healing with Native Plants of the Sierra Nevada, has researched and worked with many plants native to the region and incorporates them into her familys diet and heath. But putting them on the menu daily was taking it to the next level. To me, that means trying to really live that way live close to our local landscape on a daily

basis, she said. Many people find it overwhelming to get started or have forgotten that we have abundant resources of native edible food in our backyards and around us. Shes recording her progress in a daily blog at her website livingwild.org to encourage others who want to follow her example. Im looking to our community to come up with new recipes and send me new recipes, she said. Im hoping we can work together to learn how to live sustainably in the landscape. Funks husband and childrens reaction to the year-long project has been very supportive. My husband loves it, she said. He tries everything I make. My daughter, 13, has come to appreciate my recipes. She actually says she prefers

my oak nut marzipan and oak nut bliss bars to the cookies she can get at the store. She also appreciates her moms home remedy for colds a tea made from native plants. It is a combination of yerba santa an abundant native plant (locally) Oregon grapefruit and elderberry syrup, Funk said. That is the regular thing when shes coming down with a cold, and with a little honey added

FUNK: Visiting a native plant demo garden a good way to learn to recognize the edible ones
continued from PAGE 11 to it, she drinks it. The familys daily beverage of choice is manzanita cider. Some of our native berries manzanita, madrone and elderberry have more than three times the amount of antioxidants than blueberries and pomegranates, Funk said. Here we have something that is a really wonderful source of health and it is in abundance in our local landscape and it tastes delicious. Even her 4-year-old drinks it, she said. To make the tea, Funk takes the leftover skins and seeds from making manzanita sugar and boils them for 20 minutes, then strains them.
You only need about two cups of leftover skins and seeds to 12 cups of water, she said. If you want to add Vitamin C, add Douglas fir tips. They are high in Vitamin C.

Each season offers new varieties of edible plants. The fun part is to go outside and collect the plants because it offers an opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with our local landscape.

Spring is harvest time for fir tips

They turn a bright green, Funk said. You can just gently pull those off the fir tree. If you want to add those, add it while the cider is steeping and let it steep for 10 minutes more. ... Keep it in a jar in the fridge. Knowing what and when to harvest native plants is important. Each season offers new varieties of edible plants, Funk said. They can be used fresh or dried

for use later. The fun part is to go outside and collect the plants because it offers an opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with our local landscape. Spring brings a bounty of selections including mugwort. It is our wonderful local insect repellent, she said. So after the rains, what comes next? Mosquitoes. The preparation is simple, she explained. Gather enough mugwort to fill a

Mason jar. Cover it with boiling water and let it seep overnight. Then strain it into a spray bottle and it is ready to use. It grows along trails and roadsides, she said. It tends to be in sunny areas and it is in mass. Miners lettuce is another spring treat. It is an abundant native weed that is delicious and filled with vitamins and minerals, she said. And it is available to you before you can grow your garden lettuce.

Something nice about wild edibles is they are a nice complement to what you can grow in the garden. Another spring favorite is red bud blossoms, which are also good in salads. They are starting to bloom right now, she said. Although Funk does enjoy getting out into the wild with her family, her emphasis is on cultivating edible native plants in the home garden. Any time you are out collecting some from the wild, you have to be 100 percent sure of the identification of the plant, she said. If you arent certain, then dont collect it. Visiting a native plant demonstration garden is a good way to learn how to recognize the edible ones. For those who want to get started, she suggests picking one native plant per season. Try it in different recipes and find different ways to use it and store it, she said. So you really pay attention to whats available each season. Funk is working on an updated edition of her book, to be published next year. She also speaks to local organizations and is leading a walk at the Sacramento Historic Cemetery on April 21. The California Native Plant Society has turned it into a native plant demonstration garden,

she said. Funks quest is an important part of the whole picture of eating local, according to Julie Becker, California Native Plant Society member and communications director for Flicker Press. It is interesting to forage for food, but what excites me is eating local and supporting our local agriculture, she said. I think all of this is building awareness for the natural environment and building on what we have. In that sense, I appreciate that on a large scale and try to think about what I buy and where I shop. Its not just about food, but supporting the local economy. It all goes together.

Vegetable gardening can be fun and healthy too

here is something I feel everybody should do plant a vegetable garden. Growing your own veggies is truly the first step toward a healthy lifestyle. Not only is gardening a good way to burn calories but growing your own veggies Jennifer Miner means you Garden get to enjoy Column vegetables that are fresher, riper, healthier and cheaper! If you have never planted one before, then you should really do yourself a favor and give it a try. You will eat healthier, more

nutritious veggies and save money too. For some reason, the first thing most individuals think is, I cant grow anything. I kill everything. However, you will be surprised at how easy growing a veggie garden can actually be. You dont have to be a farmer to grow super tasty vegetables and you dont have to have a huge backyard. You can grow veggies even if you live in an apartment. The first and most important step is the soil. If you are planting right in the ground, then you need to add lots of organic material (like compost, steer manure or humus). You should measure out an area in your yard and then turn the soil mixing in your compost. One of the best ways to do a

veggie garden is in a raised bed. You dont have to have a huge raised bed to grow lots of yummy veggies. Even a bed that is 4 feet by 4 feet will provide a decent amount of your favorite vegetables. I prefer raised beds because it is much easier to get great nutrient rich soil in a raised bed. Once your bed is built, then fill it with a good planting mix, and then before every planting season, add a new layer of compost. The second step is deciding what to plant in your new vegetable bed. Tomatoes, squash, cucumber and melons are some of the easiest to grow and usually are very prolific. If this is the first time you have planted a garden, then it is wise to start small and grow a

few of your favorites. Dont try and grow one of every vegetable you see at the nursery. Start small and grow into a bigger garden as your success allows. The third step is going to be maintenance. Throughout the growing season, you will need to watch for bugs and other pests. There are lots of organic pest controls you can use in your veggie beds. Most veggies are heavy feeders, which means they will do better and grow bigger with fertilizer. Again, there are lots of great organic fertilizers that can be applied during the growing season that will help make the plants healthier and more vigorous. Most gardeners give their vegetable gardens too much water. You need to allow your

plants to dry out between watering. Dont water when the soil is wet to the touch. The best way to tell if you need to water is dig down about 6 inches and, if the soil is wet, dont water. Growing your own veggies is fun and truly can be rewarding. Once you get the hang of it, try canning or preserving some of the veggies you grew so you can enjoy garden grown veggies all year long. Also, if you feel like being adventurous, try composting. You can put all your green waste in your compost pile and then use your compost in your veggie bed next season to help enrich the soil. Its a win-win.

Some thoughts on foreclosures and distressed property

To buy or not to buy
uying distressed residential real estate for investment can be a path to financial security and a way to help family but it takes firm commitment to see the deal through. It requires money for the down payment, some funds and plans for the repairs, knowledge of the real property purchasing process and a heavy dose of patience. So, if you have considered getting into the rental real estate business by purchasing distressed real estate at what you believe will be a discount, read on. Im going to relate a

Against that backdrop, I became interested in a distressed single family home and I arranged for closer inspection. Although the neighborhood and the house seemed sturdy, that could not be said for the houses appearance. Wood rot in an exterior wall and an interior wall that showed signs of water damage were clear signs of neglect. One bathroom was not working, although another could be used. The rear yard contained a long-unused hot tub, decaying fences and grass that had not felt a mowers blades in months. But, on closer inspec-

Full disclosure: Im a licensed real estate broker who, although no longer active in the business of representing buyers and sellers, has remained current in real estate market trends and issues over the years because theyre an important part of the overall personal finance environment.

Area home foreclosures are down, according to several real estate sources commenting on trends in the Placer, El Dorado, Yolo and Sacramento counties, apparently ending a cycle that began several years ago with a wave of foreclosures, followed by numerous bank-owned properties often known as REOs or Real Estate Owned that in turn led to short sales and depressed housing prices. Many of those REOs are now being sold to investors at distressed prices but those prices may be increasing.

tion, the bones of the house appeared fine. The composition shingle roof looked good and the cooling compressor on the roof appeared intact. Other positive features included a stable-appearing neighborhood and adequate parking concealed from the street for the prospective tenants vehicles. The property was owned by a major bank, which insisted that any purchase offer be accompanied by a pre-qualification letter from that same bank. Of course, the bank cant insist that a buyer finance the purchase through that bank - that would be illegal - but they can insist on the letter that states the prospective buyer is financially qualified to purchase the property. I spent the better part of one day and part of

another finding a bank representative and convincing him to take my information for the prequalification letter. Numerous calls were placed to a variety of bank departments before finding one willing to perform the credit checks and issue the letter. With letter in hand, I completed a purchase offer contract on March 24. The seller countered the offer on conditions, not price, and we had a deal by April 4. As of press time, that process continues, although now we have an anticipated closing during the first week of May.

The seller disclosed that they had a financial interest in this company, and if we agreed to use it, they would pay for the title insurance. We agreed, knowing that documents would be faxed or emailed. So the seller is a major bank with multiple offices throughout the U.S. Their REO office is in Arizona. The sellers agent works out of a real estate office in Rocklin. And me, the buyer, lives in Lincoln. The bank handling the financing has several local offices. The Internet and telephone lines would get a workout among this cast.

Because this is investment property that would not be occupied by the owners non-owner occupied in real estate trade jargon funds required for the down payment would be in the 20 to 35 percent range. Although thats higher than what is generally required for owner-occupied homes, it is a current banking industry standard. I spoke with several local lenders to verify this. Loan application can be surprisingly quick although one will need several documents to verify income, long-term debt and general financial stability. Often, tax documents for the past two years will be required. The loan product for this will be a five-year adjustable rate loan. Although Im not a fan of these products for the

order. As both buyer and agent for the buyer, I occasionally received double the paperwork load. But that turned out to be an advantage. Rather than having an intermediary agent to go through, I received papers to sign and could turn them around almost immediately, thus easing the escrow process and, I thought, saving time. Alas, I had not counted on the appraisal and the time lag in scheduling and conducting one plus issuing the report. And then after the report is provided, an additional 48 to 72 hours is needed for the loan underwriters to complete their work.

ing to the market and buying and rental activity is brisk. We still have underwater property owners. But we see signs of progress and improvement. And thats something we havent seen in several years.

Use only the best professionals

As I review this process, I expect it will take approximately seven weeks to complete. Fortunately, I have been working with extremely competent financial professionals including the sellers broker, my loan officer and the escrow company in Pasadena. Competent and reliable professionals make all the difference. Our plans for the house including fixing it up and renting it on a lease-purchase or lease-option agreement to a family member. By our agreement, the new tenant will do most of the work. This scenario can work well in a number of investor-driven real estate transactions and it pays to select reliable real estate and financial professionals to aid in selecting properties and arranging your financing. Identify your target property carefully and select only those with solid structures.

The inspections
I scheduled inspections by a whole house inspector and a heating and air conditioning contractor as quickly as possible. The sellers agent provided me with a pest inspection report. That report coupled with my personal inspection of the property was confirmed by the whole house inspector. Fortunately, the HVAC system was in pretty good shape, requiring a little less than $500, after close of escrow of course, to put it in top-notch working

Joanne Neft and Laura Kenny love the farmers market. The weekly markets, in Auburn and throughout Placer County, have become community gathering places where families and farmers meet to talk about what food is in season and where it comes from. That farm-to-table concept served as the inspiration for Placer County Real Food, a collection of menus for every week of the year. The food, purchased at local farmers markets, was prepared by Neft and Kenny, photographed by Keith Sutter and served at weekly dinners. The cookbook, released in April 2010, has become a staple in kitchens throughout the

country although its enthusiastic reception came as a welcome surprise to its authors. Joanne and I were wondering if we were going to be sitting on 9,000 copies of the book, we truly were, Kenny laughed. Two years later, the authors are preparing for the release of The Art of Real Food, published by Nefts In Season Publishing. A similar cookbook to Real Food, The Art of

Real Food features several new twists. This book is different in that it focuses on a fruit or vegetable at its peak of flavor that particular week of the year, Neft explained. The book is divided into weeks, each featuring recipes that call for that weeks star. All ingredients were purchased at the farmers market. An upcoming week focuses on red chard and rhubarb, offering meals such as Swiss chard soup and fried chard stems with blue cheese. The cookbook also contains cooking tips and an abundance of information about eating healthfully. It provides a concrete way for people to understand how to eat seasonally and from local food sources, said Carol Arnold, general manager of the Foothill Famers Market. Its an excellent tool that if they go into the

Although stocked with healthy recipes, the book also includes a few indulgences, referred to as love by its authors. Those treats arent forbidden, they say, but should be eaten in moderation. Neft and Kenny agreed that a favorite recipe in the new book is for Meyer lemon pudding. Like many of the more than 250 recipes in the book, it was submitted by a friend. Without the help of local farmers, Kenny said, the book would not have been possible. The book adds several artistic elements. Sutters photography graces the pages, and Auburns Paula Amerine created 35 watercolor paintings of many foods. Auburn sculptor Anthony Maki-Gill hand-crafted more than 70 serving dishes for the project. I cant think of any more purposeful or meaningful project than creating art with and for your community, and having it centered around the creation of food as art, Maki-Gill said. It was the idea of the whole package art combined with fresh, local food that prompted Neft to call Kenny and propose a second book. I said, I think theres an opportunity to put together a rather unique cookbook. How would you feel about doing another one? Neft said. And Laura didnt slam the phone down on my ear. Sixteen months of writing and collecting recipes and organizing monthly or bi-monthly photo shoots has culminated in The Art of Real Food, which was released April 28. Thinking about the evolution of healthy eating, Neft, a longtime agriculture advocate, said that in just the past few years, this community and the world have realized the importance of fresh, healthy foods, and have embraced farmers markets. People are growing more, people are more aware that its to their advantage to eat healthy food, Neft said. Its really good for their children, its important for the people they love, to feed them healthy food.
