Miles to go

he common Indian is still grappling with the shock of the definition of per capita expenditure of Rs 32 per day in urban areas and Rs 26 per day in rural areas by the Planning panel while our country is combating communicable diseases that are crippling future generations we are so proudly flaunting to the world as our nations prospective intellect pool, what with our 2020 dream and other kaleidoscopic dreams of all kinds contributed by the countrys patriotic intelligentsia! Lets face the grim reality- While access to drinking water in India has increased over the past decade, the tremendous adverse impact of unsafe water on health continues. The World Bank estimates approximately one-fifth of communicable diseases in India to be water related. Of these diseases, diarrhoea reigns as the single most killer disease, impacting children under the age of five. While the import of western cultures of eating out has made a humungous foray into the lengths and breadths of the country, no guidelines on food and water safety appropriate to the new trends seem to exist nor are they being implemented. The country happily seems to be a haven for numerous food stalls and shanties in every nook and cranny possible where even the most tolerant foodie will have a horrendous experience if he unearths what goes on while the food or beverage is being prepared. Unmindful of hampering health very seriously there are food stalls outside and inside schools and colleges , public parks, beaches, ancient cinema halls, not to talk of hawkers , peddling food stuffs that are not only unhygienic and capable of leading to food poisoning or worse still, to deadly communicable diseases, but are also detrimental to the health given the harmful ingredients such as saturated fats, colours,

preservatives and God knows what go into these! Okay, so working moms and those who have paucity of time stomp into the huge malls and pick up instant foodstuffs and heave a huge sigh of relief- Our families are safe! and then bang comes a study that unravels how the huge MNCs and food corporates are taking our citizens for a jolly ride with their astute strategies of different rules for the western nations and countries like India. Why? Because, here no one is bothered. Even if due to some bad luck , people do get caught they can get out by waving wads of greenbacks or in the worst case scenario, enjoy their lives in the cool confines of places like Tihar jail where they do not lack any facility they have not enjoyed outside. And better still- they get the much wanted publicity that propels them to global fame! ( Remember the big smiles of all those who went to jail recently?) While the cof fers of food corporates are overf low ing and the blissfully unaware ( or maybe incorrigible!) food peddlers of the streets go about their daily grind spreading viruses, bacteria, mites and innumerable other germs across the nation, we march ahead with the hope that somehow our bodies will be able to forsake the impact of the various assaults to our systems and move forward to emerge as successful global citizens! Cheers!

Ciao!

Good Health Adds Life To Years

Never too Late or Better Late Than Never?

Dr.Priya Selvaraj
he reason for revisiting this topic is the current scenario in our country where we as so called ethically bound infertologists still strive to bring about unnatural births for women beyond their age of normal life expectancy. In this aspect we are only highlighting the darker side of the Indian mentality and belief that the male child is the true heir and we would assist these couples to push themselves to any extremes to bear one. By doing so we are not only breaking

ground rules of Indian law but also our own values. Every year, beyond the age of 50 is a bonus and if we have procreated by then all our existence is invested in the well being and future of these fortunate ones If this is the mindset of a young mother, what would be the planning and investment in the mind of a 70 year old towards the safety and future of her offspring, needless to say premature ones? While we still wait for the laws to set an upper age limit and settle

controversies as when should a couple be refused treatment, we as high thinking individuals should at least be humane enough to decide the age limit when a couple walk in to the clinic, based on their history and outcome of a general health check up. Is it worth the risk or not? Should we restrict the treatment only to medically fit individuals or those who are aware of the increased risks associated with the pregnancy? Should we calculate the age limit based on the average

c| 8

May 2012
life expectancy? Why are we arguing with numbers when a fit 60 year old can go through the whole process with donated oocytes and hormone replacement therapy? Well the arguments dont just end thereif only we could delve into the minds of the young off springs to know what they fathom about parents. REASONS FOR DELAYING CHILDBEARING Higher Education Career demands and competitiveness Financial instability Search for a stable relationship Second relationships Are older parents justified in their decision and should they be made to provide official details of their security plan for their child? Should there be an official guardianship instituted? Should there be in-depth counseling and performance of only single embryo transfers to these women? IMPACT OF AGE REPRODUCTION Poor responsiveness stimulation protocols Increased rate cycle ON to Lower implantation rate Higher abortion rate Improved pregnancy rates with DOP The reasons cited for the desire to have children so late are that people who have children are very admired. Yes, a child fulfils the cycle of womanhood but why couldnt decisions be made earlier? Being busy and no access to treatment modalities are trivial in comparison to what lies ahead for the child! Quoting a parent who was gifted a child during old age, The treatment cost me a fortune but the birth of a son makes it all worthwhile. I can die a happy man and a proud father. The birth of a son makes him eligible to dowry benefits when he is of a marriageable age and also inheritance and working rights to his own lands. Is it not time to introspect and bring about a change in our own laws? This mindset is not genetic, but the result of being raised in a convoluted society mired by equally convoluted laws. If this mindset were to change where a woman is not deemed barren or is given equal rights as a man, then I am sure we will be spared from treating grandmothers in order to prove a point! Even in the absence of any drastic uncontrolled illnesses it is up to us to set an age limit. It is important to consider female ovarian age and the influence of the average age of menopause. A woman whose family has a menopausal age of 45 would

Eves Times

have a pair of ovaries that retire at least 13 years prior to this age! On the other hand we have also balanced the scenario with an antidote-oocyte Harvesting/ freezing and ovarian tissue Cryopreservation for the future-BANK your hopes! Let us see generally how IVF pregnancies fare when women aged 35 years and above undergo the treatment cycle. It can be seen that when own gametes are used the pregnancy rates drop drastically to 12% for women aged>40 years and alarmingly none proceeded to live births. The pregnancy rate for women between 25 and 40 years is only 21% with a fetal loss rate of 30%. When donor oocytes are used, the pregnancy and live birth rate are significantly increased. The incidence of extreme

cancellation

Few oocytes for fertilization Fewer embryos for transfer Decrease in oocyte and embryo quality

premature births in about 7% in women aged more than 40 year as opposed to 3% in those aged less. However the results in the above 45 age group decline despite donor oocytes, owing to poor implantation site with advancing age. So with the advances in ART and increasing use of donated oocytes, pregnancy rates have climbed, but the obstetric and perinatal outcome in still bound by two important factors - maternal age and underlying medical conditions. The risk of chromosomal abnormalities is also directly proportional to age but with medical advancements these are drastically cut down as well. These women are also prone to develop pregnancy induced hypertension, diabetes mellitus and multiple

pregnancies. There is also an increase in intrauterine growth restriction for the fetus and abnormal placentation. Most of them have also had an episode of threatened abortion and many of them are candidates for cervical os tightening. Yes its our life and as women we have the right to chooseits our body and soul. But it would be worthwhile to teach the younger generation to do the right things at the right time! They should be taught the art of balancing a career and home. Pursuing a higher education or career need not be done at the cost of engaging in a stable relationship or childbearing. Yes, situations are not the same for everyone but these could be worked around with able guidance and support from the family.

It would definitely make a wave of difference to create awareness on the importance of female ageing and why the need to procreate before time runs out. This would help creation of more biological babies rather than a borrowed one. At least those who can help themselves while they canshould! The day is not too far when the success rates from frozen oocytes would equal that of conventional IVF pregnancies and then we could certainly bank our hopes on a frozen future!! But investment is always preceded by well laid plans, so lets plan our lives as well as that of the future generation. After all as parents, it is not only our duty, but the basic birth right of the child to be provided with a secure future.

Great Ways to Good Health

Positivity is the first step to kick-start the goal of adding life to years. My date with positivity has always told me that people who are optimistic live twice the number of years than pessimists; real quality life years. Also positivity only decreases stress and tension that is the sole cause of many psychosomatic illnesses. Next stress elimination plays a part, with quality sleep helping to feel refreshed and rested. The practice of deep breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga can help one feel calm and rested; the use of lavender oil on the sleeping pillow and cutting off on caffeine and alcohol has helped many get good sleep. It is heartening to know that sex is a great physical cardiovascular workout and helped add quality to year. Having sex 3 to 4 times a week reduced risk of stroke and heart attack by 50%, and helped pump happy and contentment hormones; probably the secret why our ancestors had many children. Adding quality life to years also meant enjoying red or rose wine and tea. Drinking a glass of two of red wine that is rich in anti-oxidants reduces the risk of heart disease, while black and green tea played a positive impact on overall health. It contains antioxidants that arrest the growth of cancer cells, promote dental health, strengthen the cardio-vascular system and build bone density. Reduced intake of fats and salt; since lowered our physical

ust as we are discussing why our grandparents lived long quality lives, we realize that their lifestyle incorporated a lot of physical activities due to necessity while we live sedentary lives. However we can incorporate small and

consistent changes in our lives to add quality health to our years. As we wish each other a Happy World Health Day 2012 celebrated on 7th of April, here are a few great ways if used in combination could promote quality health.

Great ways that could help add quality life to years

Fruits, whole grains, and garlic help regulate blood pressure, cholesterol and build immunity. Oranges, lemons and grapefruit provide Vitamin C, while bananas also provide potassium to build immunity and regulate blood pressure. I would recommend eating wholegrain foods like bread, rice and cereals that reduce blood pressure and LDL. Garlic taken regularly cleanses the body, promotes good circulation and heart health and reduces cholesterol. It also promotes body immunity to fight infections. An idle mind builds negativity; so keeping the brain active with mentally challenging activities leads to brain power and life in years. Laugh a lot to enjoy life. Reading and doing challenging mental activities like Sudoku, crossword and mental puzzles have always reduced degeneration of the brain. I would rather prefer to laugh a lot than frown; it uses lesser face muscles, improves blood circulation, heart health, and

also control diabetes, infections and pain. Exercise your way to add quality life to years; weightbearing exercises like running or dancing build bone health, tone, flexibility, coordination and rhythm and strengthens the body. Water aerobics or exercising in the water is great to build muscles and stamina and are gentle on the joints as compared to exercises on land. Next make sure to have a good hearty breakfast each morning which is needed to burn more calories during the entire day and would be the best fuel to kick-start your mechanism. Lastly complement all these great ways to quality life in years with hydration; drinking about 8 glasses of water a day helps to improve digestion, absorption of nutrients, skin health and detoxification. Meet you all at 80. Promise me to add quality life to your years. Positivity

activity leads to deposition of excess fat in the artery walls. Grilling, steaming or poaching or baking is preferred. Olive oil, a mono-saturated fat reduces harmful cholesterol in the blood and is best used in salad dressings and frying. Reducing the use of common salt cuts down risk of high blood pressure; herbs and spices like nutmeg, paprika and oregano can replace common salt.

andita used to feel drained by the end of the day, being her own boss in her own IT company and spending the rest of the time back home, doting on her only child. Most of us end up feeling drained, sluggish and listless at the end of the day. What can be done to counter these energy dips? Ms Manimekalai Viadyanathan, an expert in nutrition and diet planning in Chennai , gives handy tips on feeling good and energetic throughout the day. Excerpts from a conversation with her We really are what we eat. What we ingest on a regular basis affects the amount of energy we have, our ratio of body fat to lean muscle and the general level of health that we enjoy on a day to day basis. Most of us are caught up in guilt trips over eating too much, too often, too little or just too unhealthily. Its vital that we gain an understanding of how the quality and the amount of food that we eat can have a profound effect on our mental, emotional and physical well being. Establishing healthy eating patterns is one of the most pivotal steps to enjoying high energy living. It is common knowledge that our body requires vitamins, enzymes, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber and plenty of water. Our nutritional needs too undergo constant changes during pregnancy, puberty or menopause. Hence, it is absolutely important to protect our baseline nutritional status on a long term basis, so that,

increases heart disease, lowers circulation and causes poor immune system functioning. Now lets take a look at some energy boosters. Make it a habit to consume at least five large glasses of water a day. This can improve your bowel function, skin tone becomes fresher and clearer and headaches disappear magically. Drink a large glass of water when you wake up, followed by another at mid morning, mid afternoon, late afternoon and early evening. If possible, drink a glass of water after every cup of tea, coffee, chocolate or alcohol you may consume. This is a practical solution to replacing the fluid that these drinks encourage your body to eliminate.

when you face extra-demanding phases, you are able to roll with the punches without feeling wrung out. Some foods should be treated with caution and intake of it reduced to a great extent if you are concerned about boosting your basic sense of vitality. Many of us mistakenly assume that whenever we feel that we cant keep up the pace, the best way to getting a quick energy boost is to increase sugar intake. But the effect is shortlived and does more harm than good. High sugar intake results in ever repeating peaks and troughs of energy. And also leads to weight gain, increased risk of diabetes, dental cavities, thrush and a decreased immune system. In order to get to grips with chronically low energy levels, it is advisable to jettison as many sources of refined white sugar as possible. Regular consumption of caffeinated drinks accompanied

by a cookie or two kicks your adrenal glands into action, moving you to a state of adrenal exhaustion. This makes you more prone to bouts of extreme mental, emotional and physical fatigue. If you want to enjoy optimum mental, emotional and physical energy, it makes a great deal of sense to avoid drinking alcohol. Your liver too will benefit from receiving some much needed rest. The trick to sustaining great energy levels does not involve avoiding carbohydrates completely. Its more a question of choosing the right kind. It is in fact advisable to cut down heavily on consuming refined carbohydrates- white bread, pasta, white sugar, cakes and snacks. If you are into smoking, it would do you a world of good to kick the habit. Smoking accelerates the process of aging,

Never skip breakfast. A good breakfast is the best way to ensure that you dont hit a severe energy slump later in the day. Avoid drinking strong cups of tea or coffee with your breakfast: instead, substitute it with green tea. As a midmorning snack, munch on pieces of fruit and bite sized chunks of vegetables. Drink a glass of water with a twist of lemon added. Include a host of unrefined carbohydrates into your diet. They are wholesome foods and provide you with a wide range of vitamins, minerals, fiber and slow release sugars. Shop for whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, lentils, beans and potatoes and include them in your diet Combine these with small portions of protein such as fish, eggs, poultry, pulses, and modest servings of cheese to optimize your energy levels. Raw, fresh vegetables and fruits stimulate high level health and vitality. Dark green, orange, red and yellow fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants and nutrients. Vitamin C is one of the best known antioxidants which act as a sort of search and destroy agent when any free radical comes into contact with it. Snack on a piece of fruit whenever you feel you are roller coasting on peaks and troughs of energy. Here is a general guide to foods and drinks that you can make the mainstay of your eating plan in order to experience high level health and vitality on a daily basis. Take generous amounts of salads with your lunch, along with dishes of fresh green vegetables. As a mid afternoon drink, sip on refreshing glasses of water or herbal tea. Take a light dinner, with generous portions of green, red and orange vegetables. As dessert, opt for fresh fruit and yoghurt. To keep your blood sugar levels steady, take care to much on something small, yet healthy, every two hours throughout the day. Try to make the basis of your daily eating pattern healthy mix of unrefined carbohydrates, with plenty of water, a little protein and a modest amount of dietary fat.

hat you eat is what you are. But food habits have been changing drastically over the previous years. People hardly eat according to their culture or genes, like even the way we eat breakfast has started to change. This is the observation of diet consultant in Mumbai, Shilpa Mittal. Cornflakes, which had a shaky start is now doing fairly well in India. It has in fact created a new market and even the

Indian makers of readymade cereals are cashing in on this trend. Some typically Indian good-for-health breakfast like poha and upma is now easily available in easy-to-cook packets. And all these cereals sell on the health platform with extra fibre, extra vitamins and minerals. A big change from some of the traditional Indian breakfasts which consisted of freshly cooked parathas, dalia, idli, dosa and other goodies. Present day diet is too high in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium and processed carbohydrates and is too low in unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Shillpa explains, The highs and lows of our diet have

also contributed to the increase in incidence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and many types of cancers. The combination of overeating and under-exercising has produced a country filled with overweight and obese individuals. Modern day medicine has lead to an increase in our lifespan but our bad habits have turned it into a curse as these long lives are not healthy lives. Our bad eating habits, sedentary lifestyles and smoking have prevented us from enjoying the fruits of medical technology. Today, even educated people do not understand the dangers of consuming a lot of processed and packaged food. People are

on the spur of moment. Given the lifestyle today, it is imperative that you change your eating habits. Her advice, Eat 5-6 meals a day, do not skip any meal due to lack of time especially breakfast.

hardly interested in preparing home cooked meals and are rather dependent on packaged or outside foods. We are living to eat instead of eating to live. Well, we have to pay the price for how we live and what we eat. Shilpa insists, Know your pitfalls. To improve your eating habits, you first have to know whats wrong with them. Write down everything you eat. Then check do you add a lot of butter, ghee, salt or salad dressings? Rather than eliminating these foods, just cut back your portions. Are you getting enough fruits and vegetables? If not, you may be missing out on

vital nutrients. So try to replace them slowly for unhealthy junk. Planning your meals in advance can be a lifesaver at times when you have a hectic schedule. When you already know what are you preparing in next meal you are not tempted to make anything which is not healthy

Include fibre rich foods. Eat at least 2-3 vegetables and 2-3 fruits a day. Switch from refined, packaged dead foods to wholesome and fresh foods. Include some kind of physical activity in your routine may be walking, swimming, dancing, cycling or gyming, the one which you enjoy and will continue throughout your lifetime. To build a healthy country a big change in the way people eat, which should be taught right from childhood. Eating healthy will reduce the incidence of lifestyle diseases and thereby increase the countrys productivity.

(IHD) or bronchial problem, where phlegm gets collected in the lungs blocking the passage of air. Expert opinion is a must in such a situation. Diseases of the heart are congenital or acquired. Congenital heart diseases are present from birth and can manifest anytime in life, depending on the severity of the disease.

wareness about cardiac diseases and diabetes is spreading. However, there are still some aspects which need to be taken into account. Dr. Abhay Sham Gokhle, Cardiologist and Diabetologist in Mumbai says that a person is susceptible to heart disease any time after the age of 30. Significantly, Indians

get heart disease 10-15 years before the people from Western countries. First of all, is any chest discomfort equal to heart disease? According to Dr. Gokhle, Actually chest discomfort is a symptom. The discomfort could be due to acidity, Ischemic Heart Disease

Acquired heart diseases are hypertension, IHD and pulmonary hypertension. As the heart is basically a pump supplying blood to all parts of the body, the common symptoms of heart diseases are related to failure as a pump or abnormal beating (palpitation). Palpitation is occasional

fatigue, chest pain, fainting or breathlessness, a person should seek medical attention, immediately. Women above 65 have 13% chances of developing IHD over 10 years. The risk multiplies, depending on the presence of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and smoking (active and passive).

women usually have a family history of diabetes. Heart disease is the number 1 cause of death in older women. At the same time, he assures, The risk can be reduced by awareness, regular checkups, lifestyle modification, giving up smoking and regular breathing exercises. His advice, Women with family history of diabetes, hypertension or IHD need periodic checking of blood pressure and blood sugar. A majority of people with diabetes are obese. The association between obesity and type 2 diabetes is well established. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, complicating its medical treatment. Furthermore, mortality is greater in overweight women than in slimmer women suffering from diabetes. Diet, exercise and oral medication can effectively control hyperglycaemia (diabetes) though insulin may be required in the later years.

missing of heartbeats. Dr. Gokhle warns, It is fairly common in young individuals, women included, but when the heart takes up persistent irregular rhythm, it may be a sign of arrhythmia (variation from normal rhythm, i.e. in hearts action). If the rhythm disturbance is accompanied by symptoms of weakness,

Coronary artery disease is another of the heart related problems. It is any disorder in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. He enumerates, The risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease include family history, high level of lipids (fats) in blood, again diabetes and smoking, sedentary lifestyle and stressful life. Recorded incidence of Type 2 diabetes or adult diabetes, itself, has significantly increased over the years. He explains, This type of diabetes usually occurs in people over 30 years of age. Since its onset is gradual, its diagnosis is often missed. Such

In the field of psychoneuro immunology, it has been proved scientifically that the manner in which we think and react emotionally on a day to day basis can have a profound effect on the functioning of the immune system and the average quality of health enjoyed at all levels. When we undergo maximum stress and the circumstances causing stress continues unabated for too long, our general resistance is undermined. Once the

potential for making maximum use of the oxygen you inhale. It also stimulates the flow of lymphatic fluid which plays a pivotal role in helping the fight against infection. When selecting an exercise regimen, ensure that whatever activity is chosen is going to be enjoyable and well suited to your individual temperament. Consider options that are fun and pleasurable such as dancing, skiing, rowing, walking, yoga, cycling, swimming and also sports such as tennis, volley ball and badminton. The alternative approach to medical treatment is very different. Instead of concentrating on finding treatments that are very specifically targeted against bacteria or virus, alternative therapists are more often concerned with focusing on what makes us all susceptible to illness taking hold of us , in the first place. More significantly, alternative medicines like homeopathy, ayurvedha, acupuncture and the therapists therein, aim to restore the whole system to health, rather than striving to eliminate specific micro-organisms. As a result, alternative medicine acts gently, effectively and without the risk of serious side effects.

stressful phase has been dealt with, the body chooses to temporarily give up; resulting in the onset of a host of stress related disorders like migraine, psoriasis, irritable bowel syndrome and so on. When taking on an eating plan to give the bodys capacity for immunity a maximum boost, it is vital to aim for a well balanced, varied diet that does not make you feel socially isolated or deprived. Include as many bright orange, red, dark green, or yellow vegetables and fruits in your diet, since these are rich in antioxidant nutrients. Drink plenty of water

to flush out toxic waste from your system. Make it a point to choose organic, free range produce whenever possible. Consume dairy products in moderation. Include proteins by combining pulses and beans with grains and cereals. Exercise regularly, since it conditions the heart and lungs, enhancing your

Stress Is One Of The Factors Responsible For Infertility!

By Gayatri T Rao

r. Priya Alvarez is the first Gynaecologist and Obstetrician in India to have managed an antenatal case of spontaneous conception quintuplets. She is an expert in the Mira Road, Mumbai area on managing the delivery of multiple live babies in the

same pregnancy. Infertility treatments often result in multiple babies in the same pregnancy. According to Dr. Priya, the best years to conceive a child are between 22 and 29. Some women even after their marriage do not conceive.

This is due to their lifestyle, stress-related problems or they may have some problem with their reproductive system or hormonal imbalance, says Dr. Priya. The problems their reproductive system can have are fibroids in the uterus, poor lining of uterus, polycystic

fallopian tube and does not go to the uterus. Infertility is treated after doing a thorough check-up of both the partners. The different diagnostic modalities for infertility are blood tests, hormonal tests, follicular sonography and tubal testing. Tubal testing is to rule out any blockage in the fallopian tube. Many people do not marry at the right age. With the advancement of age, there are several consequences of late motherhood. They are medical problems like blood pressure, diabetes and increased chances of abnormalities in the children. The abnormalities are like Downs Syndrome and handicap. There are more chances of mental retardation or Downs Syndrome, if the age of the mother is 35-40 years of age. Any hereditary chromosomal defects in the family also follow you. These chromosomal defects can be detected with the help of Chorionic Villus Sampling, Amniocentesis and double marker and triple marker blood tests. Such a fetus with chromosomal defects can very well be aborted. Where laws disallow the termination of pregnancy of a female fetus, there are no such laws that prohibit the abortion of a fetus with chromosomal defects. The bottom line is infertility and consequences of late motherhood can only be prevented by marrying at the right age and trying to conceive during the right age.

ovary and ovarian cysts. Even thyroid problems can prevent a woman from getting pregnant. She explains, Further, there are 2 types of infertility-Primary and secondary. Primary infertility is when a woman is not able to conceive any pregnancy at all. She is trying but is not able to conceive. In secondary infertility, a woman has conceived before but cant do it again. It could be that she may have a child or even had a miscarriage or an abortion. Once she has proved she can get pregnant. After that she is

not able to conceive. Long term use of contraceptives can also hamper fertility. If the pill is taken over several years, it can hamper pregnancy. Dr. Priya insists, But if it is taken for 2-3 months, it may even help to make the patient pregnant. However, though Copper-T prevents pregnancy, if used long-term and if it gets infected it can prevent pregnancy. It can even cause ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized ovum remains embedded in the

Eat for Quality Life

You may have already read enough and more about the fact that the right food is the fulcrum for growth, health and personal development. Doubtless, this fact, and amply supported by truth. But Im here to tell you something you might not quite know, just yet. Did you know that if you dont give yourself the requisite dose of milk, you might miss out on Calcium, and by the time you hit forty, your bones will be rickety, eroded and weak? Did you know that if you dont touch your greens, you are slowly pushing your haemoglobin levels downwards, and that can cause you to suffer anaemia? Did you know that if you sit cooped indoors, you actually deprive your body of the Vitamin D that it needs, and gets only from the sun? Did you know that by hunching for hours before your computer, you are compromising on your posture and killing your eyesight? day would that be? Depriving your body of Breakfast is quite the same thing. Neglecting your health is perhaps the easiest thing to do- of course, one has commitments- that project has to be finished, a test is pending to be studied for, a thousand random questions need to be answered so you master that History lesson, an insane number of chemical equations and biology diagrams need to be mastered so you can become the maverick of tenth grade science. But take a breather, and give your body its due. Theres so much to distract youbooks, movies, a new sitcom on television, music, a friends gossip- WOW! With that much and more, the engine that your body is will be tired out soon, right? Take a break, sit back and always make sure that you get enough rest, and spend at least fifteen minutes each day doing nothing. By nothing, I mean nothing. Just lie down, or recline in an ease chair, and just rest. Trust me, this short session is a fabulous way to recharge your batteries! Life has so much to offer, and never let yourself be deprived of these wonderful joys only because you wouldnt take care of your health! Remember, your health is in YOUR hands.

at your vegetables, dont waste them! Dont you want to be healthy? Drink this glass of milk! How will you become taller and stronger, then? I am sure of the fact that you would have heard these lines from nearly every quarter throughout the greater part of your childhood, and if you are lucky, even in your teenage years. Quite simply, many of us are guilty of brushing these unparalleled truths aside, hoping against hope that every meal would be made of pizzas or burgers instead of rasam and rice, of pastas and noodles instead of dal and roti; hoping against hope that every afternoon drink would be a refreshing glass of Coke and not milk! But lets take a moment and reflect, shall we?

Exactly!
Eating is one thing, eating right, is another thing altogether. Some of the most common health mistakes most youngsters make is skipping breakfast. NEVER, EVER do that! Breakfast is your first meal for the day, and kickstarts your day with the right energy you need. Imagine if the sun never rose? What kind of a

Beauty Tips for Anti-Ageing A

Priyanka Sakhamuru

geing is a natural process which is inevitable. When women hit the big Three-O, its quite difficult for them to come to terms when the signs of ageing start to appear. We all grow old one day, but thanks to modern science there are ways to delay it. Today, women of 50 look like they are 30 as there are cosmetic products galore available in the markets. However they cost a bomb and cannot be afforded by most women. Not to worry, beautician Asha Belamkar leads us through a natural beauty routine you can follow for youthful, glowing skin. The things you need for the routine are available in your kitchen or can be easily purchased at an ayurveda store. What causes ageing? The skin is like a leaf. If there isnt enough moisture, it wrinkles and dries up. In other words, lack of moisture in the skin speeds up the process of ageing, says Asha. She adds that people with dry skin have to be extra careful. Regularly moisturizing the skin does the trick. Also with the pollution and stress levels we face in this day and age, it takes a toll on your face. Lack of sleep and improper food intake add to the damage. So ladies, the right diet along with beauty sleep as well as a skin-care routine will ensure wonderful results. Anti-ageing remedies Asha provided us with a few antiageing routines which can be easily prepared and followed at home. Anti-ageing mask

Mix 2 tbsp peanut oil, 1 egg yolk, tbsp honey, a bit of lemon juice and apply on your face. Leave it on for 25 minutes and rinse it off with water. This mask has the goodness of retinol which helps in rejuvenation and regeneration of skin. Cucumber cream anti-wrinkle

Mix half a cucumber, 2 tbsp of mayonnaise, cup olive, avocado or wheatgerm oil, 1 tbsp of honey along with a few drops of orange juice and apply on your face. Rinse it off after a while. The egg has amino acids which aids in skin toning. Natural anti-ageing face lift Mix 2 egg whites, a tbsp of sugar and leave it on for 25 minutes. This mixture should be applied in the opposite direction. Rinse it off with either warm water in an upward direction. Do not pull the skin, dab it with a warm cloth while removing the mask, suggests Asha. All of the above remedies are suitable for all skin types says Asha, the owner of Rupa Beauty Parlour, Hubli. Other important routines Exfoliation is an essential part of any beauty regime as it does away with dead cells and gives way to new skin. A mixture of a spoon each of brown and granulated white sugar along with a tbsp of almond oil, 2 tbsp vanilla extract, 1 tbsp each of ground oatmeal and cinnamon will work like a charm. This natural exfoliator can be used for both face and body before you step into the shower. Women with oily or pimple prone skin should avoid exfoliation. For strong, nourished nails apply ghee or beeswax or even petroleum jelly overnight. This is to soften and strengthen your nails. You can also soak your nails in lukewarm water (add essential oils to relieve stress). For long-lasting strong and lustrous hair here is what you can do. Heat olive oil and almond oil. Cool the oils; when the mixture is still warm add fenugreek seeds. Soak the seeds overnight and drain them the next morning. Apply and gently massage into your hair and wash it off after a while. Make sure the last rinse is with cold water. It adds shine to your tresses. What you also need Says Asha Always moisturize your skin before and after bath. Include a lot of tomatoes and beans in your diet. They contain anti-oxidants which delay the ageing process. In addition to these remedies, women also need a regular exercise routine. Drinking at least two liters of water every day is a must to keep your skin re-hydrated. Though it is ideal to follow this routine every day, women who work should make it a point to fit it in at least 2 days a week. Now that were armed with these beauty tips, we can say cheers to growing old.

Its better to use non-stick pan for cooking vegetables with less oil. Also add a little salt while cooking vegetables as this will prevent them from getting burnt fast. Egg yolks often get a bluish colour on the outside while boiling eggs. How can we prevent this? The blue colour appears due to hydrogen peroxide that is released while boiling the eggs. Cooker boil the eggs for not more than 7 minutes. Pour fresh water for boiling. The eggs must not be taken out directly from fridge and boiled; they must be at room temperature. Boil water and only then put the eggs in the water. This will avoid the blue colour. Crystal, Chennai My husband is very fond of Vathal Kuzhambu. Despite trying hard, I am unable to make vathal kuzhambu of thick consistency. My husband doesnt like it if I mix rice powder to thicken it. How else can I make a kuzhambu with the right consistency? Bhooma, Valasarawakkam If your family doesnt like your adding rice powder, you can try using Thoor Dal. Roast Thoor dal, powder and add it to the vathal kuzhambu mixture. Some women mix urad dal and gram dal when they make sambar powder. If you use this sambar powder , the vathal kuzhambu will turn out thick and tasty.

While trying to make icing on a cake or for use in icecreams, the cream that we buy from the market curdles on whipping, what can we do to avoid this? Raji Krishnan Chennai Cream like Amul and other Indian brands have contrast temperature due to which they curdle on whipping. To avoid this gelatin or china grass can be added to the cream. Also place the cream bowl on ice while whipping. Can buttermilk be used for rava idly? Mala Chennai Shivashankar,

No, buttermilk will not taste good when added to rava idly mixture. Use beaten curd (sour curd is better). Vegetables burn faster if cooked in less oil. What can be done to avoid this?

veryone wants to stay healthy and strong forever. People are obsessed with looking younger and will do anything to reverse the process of ageing. But lifestyle conditions we follow today, may not allow that. In order to lead a longer life and looking young at the same time, all youve got to do is to start an exercise regime now. How you achieve that is not much of an uphill task. Says Mohammed Naseer, a health and fitness consultant, Suchirindia Infra Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad, Remember that by working out regularly, you are doing yourself a favour. It not only helps you maintain a

healthy body, but also enhances your mental well-being. It prevents premature death. In other words, exercise promotes the longevity of your life. Clear-cut and regular work-out sessions also improve energy levels and sleep patterns as well as allow you to enjoy an active sex life. Let this be the mantra before you start your regime.

sure you drink equal volume of water. In other words, a balanced diet is a sure ticket to longer life.

Boost your energy levels The next step Now comes your work out session. Naseer suggests it is best to maintain a regular exercise routine in order to delay your ageing process. An active lifestyle with adequate work outs will keep you young. This is especially important if you wish to feel and look younger for a longer time. So try to fit in physical activity into your daily routine, he adds. Experts say that you need a minimum of 2 hours a week of moderate intensity aerobic workouts like brisk walking or 5 hours a week of moderate workouts. In addition to this, you must also fit in a regime which works on all your major muscle groups. Dump the gym You dont need the gym if you want to work out. Walking is one of the best types of exercise. It goes easy on the joints. A

Eat right to develop your energy Sure, working out boosts your stamina. But before you start sweating it out remember that energy comes from food. Naseer who trained at Breathtrax Institute of Health & Fitness Atlanta, USA says Your body needs a balanced meal of carbs, protein and fat. For breakfast have a bowl of highfiber cereal along with a low fat dairy product and fruit or juice. Lunch can be lean meat, poultry or fish sandwiches using whole-grain bread along with raw vegetables and fruit. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout session. Coffee removes water from your body, so make

combination of jumping jacks, jogging and running will be highly beneficial. Squats and lunges are perfect for your lower body. Place a chair behind you and attempt to sit on it. Your knees should be perpendicular to your feet. Weight training for your arms and shoulders are necessary for toning. Use 1 liter bottles (filled with water) as makeshift weights. Simply put, an active lifestyle with adequate work outs will keep you young. Whats more, never miss out on a warming up and cooling down routine. It prevents injuries, says Naseer. For best results, it is necessary to know how to exercise properly. Depending on your age, fitness levels, skills as well as health conditions you need to create a routine that suits you the best. Always consult your doctor before you start your program, he adds. What women can do For housewives and women who work part-time, working out when the children are not around is ideal. Naseer suggests that working out with friends or spouse is an added motivation. I tell many women who I train that by remaining inactive, they will simply fade out, says the fitness expert, he adds. What are the benefits? By leading a sedentary lifestyle, your entire bodily functions are

affected. The strength of your muscles reduces and your heart does not pump adequate blood. Your cells ability to metabolize sugar is also affected. You feel dull. The older you get, the more essential it is for adult men and women to maintain a regular exercise regime. By doing so, you will reap the benefits of good posture, strength, balance, flexibility and endurance. You have better chances of avoiding age-related medical problems like heart diseases, diabetes and cancer, recounts Naseer. To sum it all up, the earlier you start your exercise routine your quality of life is better as you age. feels like being one-up. Faceto-face communication with your son regarding undesirable behaviours, may result in positive outcome. Not raising voice or controlling or advising! Teenagers retaliate/detest all this. Give him freedom with computers; but specify the boundary. If he exceeds, you will withdraw the freedom. Any pleading from his side will not change the consequence. He needs to understand by his experiences (not through your advice) that all his actions will have consequences; then he will start acting only after thinking of the consequences. At a teachable moment, if you feel comfortable about talking on the negative side of these undesirable activities, without putting him down, he may be receptive. If you are not sure about his/your comfort level, please ask some one whom he admires, to accomplish the mission. Freedom with boundaries will lead to winwin situation.

This is where the mind and body work outs play an important role and this is why yoga has woken up the world to body awareness. Do we stand on both our feet consciously? Have you ever noticed if you have a tendency to put most of your body weight

on one leg, most of the time and often on the same leg? If the answer is yes you have just pulled the trigger of imbalance in your body. Let us get to the bottom of the story or rather the bottom of the leg. Evolution has brought us down to earth walking on our feet, from climbing and swinging from tree to tree. The big toe along with the other four which used to clutch on to branches has shifted its job to pressing on to the floor to get a strong foothold. The toes were long enough to both clutch and to hold the body from tipping over as we used to walk with a forward bend. Now they have shortened with less necessity

for the length. The heel that is not used to handling the entire weight of the body is now forced to bear the same as we have straightened out our posture. Earlier the Achilles tendon (the one that connects the heel to the calf muscle) which is the largest in the body was flexible and soft enough to allow the feet to move upwards and downwards (dorsi flex and plantar flex) again a necessary action while climbing. Now with less flexion needed to walk it has just stiffened to hold the upright Homo Sapien. The arch was a natural earlier, what with all the wrapping around that the feet needed to do and now they have nicely developed into shock absorbers. Wait! What

with falling arches and flat feet and the following knee pain! Again the reason is faulty usage and weighty issues. Apart from all this we have genetics and birth defects and nutrition playing a role along with the degeneration. Your feet are capable of withstanding the load of your entire body only when you have stacked all the major bones in a perfect vertical alignment. Starting from the bottom heel, knee, hip, shoulder and ear is the line that needs to be followed. When this is not so the various ligaments, tendons and sinews around your joints support and make adjustments and the weight is somehow managed on those poor little feet. All this comes with a price tag of pain and ill health. Lengthening the spine and standing tall creates that space for better circulation and the muscles too relax in a stress free position. Too much weight on your toes and fore foot and the knees take a beating. With the weight tipping forward the knees tend to lock straining the ligaments behind to prevent us from falling over. Bunions, plantar fasciitis and early setting in of arthritis are all results of the same. Gone are the days when we were asked to stand straight with locked knees and pelvis tucked in, which actually increases the curvature in the lower spine impinging the nerves. A lot of research is being done on the most stress free posture while standing. After making note of a lot of tribes, babies and workers from different fields, weight on the heels, soft knees, a slight anterior tilt of the pelvis along with the lengthened vertical alignment is what the recommendations say. Too much of anything is too bad. So let us follow the middle path. Placing the body weight on the heel with pressure due to overweight or pressing too much on the posterior heel makes the hamstrings tighten to prevent the body from falling back. One of the major reasons for lower back pain is hamstrings being so tight that they do not allow the torso to bend over from the hip joint. The bend happens in the lower back that takes the strain that was not meant for it. Result LBP which is the number one reason for applying leave in offices today. All this just for a faulty stance! Have you ever noticed the foot print that we make with wet or muddy feet? Take a look at the curvatures of the instep from the big toe to the heel. That is exactly how our spine looks like with the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and coccyx curvatures. This leads to the science of foot reflexology that attributes each and every part of the soles of our feet to a particular organ or part of our body. If stimulating these leads to good health we should just dance our way over plains and mounds, stepping over pebbles, sand, grass, water, ice, etc. Let us have some fun with our feet. The feet are capable of other movements too like eversion and inversion which surprisingly many are incapable of due to stiffness.

Eves Times
Why did this happen? Like overuse leading to injuries underuse leads to the vanishing movement. If you do not use it, you simply lose it! Walk like a Kathakali dancer with feet turned inwards and weight in the outer edge of the soles. Push the sand in the beach away with your foot turned outward and push it back in with foot turned inward. Grab pebbles or sand or a piece of cloth with the soles of your foot and toes crunching inward and let go allowing the toes to flay apart. Lie under the stars and try to circle them with your toes pointing upwards. Try not to allow the muscles and tissues in the feet lose memory of a movement. Keep the feet as supple and strong as you can. .remember we need to stand on them. Stand up tall and say cheers to your feet below. Do you have any queries on fitness? popular therapies: Reiki: Reiki is a spiritual healing practice that was developed in 1922, by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. The technique involves healing with hands which channelize energy through the body and transmit it onto oneself, or the recipient. Reiki is a holistic therapy, which heals on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. The therapeutic process relies upon an intention, where the healer intends that the energy shall heal the recipient. It is also deployed as a form of recuperative therapy in some of the more popular hospitals in China. The practice comprises of a system of rounded, fluid, balanced movements that are practiced gently with a relaxed body and a pattern of breathing bereft of any form of strain. The process helps you relax yourself, improve your health and stamina, and generally be in the pink of good health. Emotional Freedom Technique: The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is an alternative therapy that relies on energy psychology. The object of the therapy is to help release a specific issue,

etheric, emotional and mental levels, but without touching the body of the recipient. The energy is used to realign, rebalance and to normalize the body or the environment it is surrounded by, and if needed, may also be directed to assist any aspect of the recipients daily living. Acupressure and Acupuncture: Acupressure and Acupuncture are both forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which helps remove ailments by relying on working on meridians in the body to release impediments to good health. Both therapies are based on the principle that illnesses result

from blockages of Chi that are caused along the meridians in the body. Acupressure uses the technique of applying gentle pressure along key points on the meridians, so as to release the blockages. Acupuncture relies on a system of thin needles that are inserted beneath the skin to release the blockages. When performed with precision, although needles are used, the person feels no pain from the pierce of the needles. Tai Chi: Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Tai Chi, is an ancient Chinese practice that functions as a martial art that helps to maintain good health and prevent illnesses.

in the process healing oneself and ridding oneself of illnesses. Invented by Gary Craig, the therapy heavily derives from the Thought Field Concept. EFT utilizes the tapping of some key acupuncture points, while the person focuses on a specific issue, his emotions and thoughts on the issue, and begins to release them. EFT is particularly useful in treating emotional issues, and physical conditions are healed in the process, since the therapy works on the psychosomatic level. Crystal healing: Crystals are actually minerals from the earth, and work like magic for bodily healing. They are energy channels, and offer you positive vibes and energies to help you heal your body and mind. Crystals can be worn in the form of jewellery, or even set in the form of talismans, or carried around in the convenience of a purse or wallet. Crystals come

in different colours which resonate with the colours of your chakras. Different crystals help address different issues. Bach Flower Remedies: Propagated by Dr. Edward Bach, Bach Flower remedies are a means of tapping naturally occurring flowers and the energies and symbolism they stand for, in order to address mental and physical ailments. There are 38 remedies in all, and each of these remedies addresses different mental states. The premise on which the concept of Bach Flower therapy is modeled, is that every instance of a disease is the physical manifestation of a psychological or psychosomatic belief. Oftentimes, a realignment of the underlying psyche can alter the course of ones health by retrieving and restoring it to good form. Positive Affirmations: The magic of self-affirmation of positive energy and positive self-reinforcement is perhaps the most baffling form of healing. The technique is simple- through the use of a systemic flow of positivity in the form of affirmations and self-assuring statements, one realigns a mental pattern that otherwise tends towards negativity, and can enable the mind to focus on the up-side of things.

I can eat whatever I want as long as I exercise. This is not true. Many of us tend t o overindulge after exercising which leads to addition of extra pounds. Junk foods tend to cause damage to all; so staying healthy involves taking a diet rich in vital nutrients and keeping active. I can lose weight skipping meals. by

On the contrary you will gain weight; as your body will tend to conserve the calories, break up muscles to compensate for the lack of protein to maintain body organs and slow down the body mechanism. So you would burn lesser calories and could also gain weight with overeating when you have a proper meal.

to control appetite and actually promoted it. You could consume about 2 times the calories in just 3 days, with the damage increasing over a period of time leading to obesity. I eat early at night to prevent from becoming fat. Eating late at night does not necessarily lead to obesity; missed meals during the day could induce overeating. Regularity of meals and burning calories consumed would help lose and maintain weight. It is healthy to avoid bacteria. Not necessarily, for all bacteria are not harmful; more than 1000 species of bacteria are good and healthy for the skin and body. Good hygiene is very important, but it is equally important to protect our skin from losing good bacteria due to over-cleansing of skin and excess use of antibiotics in the long run. I drink 8 glasses of water daily to keep healthy. It is good to drink 8 glasses of water each day and remain hydrated, but the amount of water a person requires depends on factors like how active he/she is, the temperature of the place and other bodily conditions. We need to realize that fluids are also got from the food we eat and the beverages we drink; so compulsion to drink 8 glasses of water cannot be a general rule.

I can easily make up sleep lost on weekdays by sleeping more during weekends. Not necessarily. Studies reveal that just long weekend sleeps of 10 hours cannot compensate sleep lost during weekdays; it was found that attention span, reaction time and relaxation levels had not returned to normal. In addition lack of sleep could lead to heart problem and overall ill-health. It is fine to eat junk foods once in a while. Never, an interesting finding revealed that actually junk food leads to an increase in appetite and obesity; junk food actually leads to the inflammation of the hypothalamus in the brain and the destroying of brains ability

I take a daily supplement of Vitamin C to prevent colds. A health myth related to catching and reducing the severity and length of colds; Vitamin C supplements help reduce the risk of catching colds in marathon runners, who are subject to high stress, but it does not do much for the common man. I believe winters are common cold seasons. It may sound true, but not necessarily; a study of 2 groups of volunteers inoculated with the cold virus, where one was kept in a warm room and the other stood wet in the corridor showed no big difference. It is possible that most people stayed indoors in winter and were in close contact with one another and contracted colds. I would rather be thin than fat. This cannot be construed as a general rule; being overweight is unhealthy, but it is also found that underweight people are at a higher risk for heart disease and pneumonia and those that are overweight over 40 live longer lives than the thin.

the trend is. It changes with times. Shenaz views life as a package of good experiences so much so that she even converts detractors to her friend. Once, during an exhibition in Delhi she had to contend with an errant executive from her company. Somebody warned me that such an incident projected our company in bad light. I took it as a challenge and assured him that such an incident would not happen anymore. Ever since, Mr. Shashank, from G L Jewelers, Delhi is a very good client of mine. On being queried about the latest fad her reply is, The current trend is pearls because they are very soothing. In the evening, you can wear pearls. You can go to any event wearing them and you can carry them off very elegantly. Summer is the time to wear minimal jewelry. Todays girls prefer modern jewelry for their marriage. But their parents insist on traditional jewelry. Shenaz has handled many such situations astutely earning the loyalty of both the younger and the older generation. olourful stones always fascinated me. So I got attracted to Gemology, says Shenaz Amarnani from Mumbai, a mother of 3 children, who decided that after her third child, she had to do something better with her life rather than sit at home. So she went

Challenges for a mother of three often seem insurmountable. But one committed to ones enterprise always finds a way to circumvent these. For her client Prateik, it so happened that jewelry was not delivered on time. On receiving a dissatisfied entreaty from his wife, she decided to set matters right. She realized that she had to be more involved with her factory, which she was not doing due to certain constraints. After assuring the client that jewelry would be delivered on a date she now gave them, she marched to her office every day. Since then she is at her desk every single day, overseeing that all orders are delivered a day before the delivery date. It is a known fact that there are flaws in gems. For a lay person, it is difficult to identify quality jewelry. Her counsel is that people go to a good gemologist in their town. Says Shenaz, Or the best thing is go to a good jeweler. If you cant afford it, go to the nearest gemology institute. If you are in Mumbai, you can come to me (laughs)! While buying gems it is better to inform the person from whom you are buying that you want real stone, if you can afford it. If you cannot afford it you tell

them you want glass-filled. If you ask for glass-filled they will not charge you much. And that will also help your purpose. So you will not get cheated. As for pearls, you can check the quality on your own. Take a pearl and rub it under your feet. If it is real, it will feel rough like salt. If it is not rough, then it is plastic. For clients who believe in astrology and would like to wear a particular gemstone to help solve some problems in their horoscope, she keeps all stones and set them along with diamond to make exquisite designs, which satisfies her

customers. The kaleidoscopic colours and the luster of gemstones will continue to adorn the treasure troves of jewelry lovers with everlasting radiance.

Good morning, Madam, said the boy, who was standing at the door. I servant you. The boy was a Mundu (in the North of India servant is called Mundu). Sujata understood that he knew some English. His name was Bihari. The first job that Sujata gave him was to get a sandwich for breakfast. She was new to the place so she sent Bihari to get it. Bihari took a few hours to return. In the meantime, Sujata bought some pao (bun) for her breakfast. When the servant returned, he had sand with him! What have brought? Sujata asked. you

What you told. Sand beach! Sujata then asked him to get beetroots. Soon there was noise of something being beaten by hammer. He had also dug out a root from the garden and beaten it flat! When she asked for spring onions, he simply cut red onions in the form of springs! Sujata could only smile. Then she asked him to get a cup

Sujata Ramachandran Iyer settled herself in her Kandarpada home and relaxed. She had just returned from the US in the afternoon. Ganesh Sharma, who had been her husbands colleague back in the US, had helped them to get a house in the Mumbai suburb

of Dahisar. The next day, Sujata was going to join her new job there. Sharma was also going to send a servant, who would henceforth take care of the household work. Sujata got up with the shrill ring of the door bell. It was morning.

Next she asked for cookies since Sharma and his wife were going to visit her that day. Bihari went out looking for them. He went to the nearest Jhunka Bhakar Centre (where you get chappatis) and caught hold of two female cooks and presented them to Sujata as cookies! She was losing her patience. To divert her attention she went to the computer and switched it on. She wanted to copy a file and take it to her office. But her pendrive was not working. So she told Bihari to get one. Bihari took a pen and replied, Madam, you can drive car. How to drive pen? That shut her up. She thought she would copy the file and send it to her own email id so that she would be able to access it from the office. But the mouse was also not working. She said, Bihari, go to the computer electronics shop and get me a mouse. I will write the specifications and give you. No need Madam. I get you mouse without specications (sic). Sujata thought maybe at least he will do this job properly.

My mother Vidhyalakshmi T Rao used to write in English for Body and Beauty Care and in Tamil for Kalai Magal and Kumudam many years ago. Her birth date is 21.3.1944. Her fathers close relative was the Tamil writer Hema Anandathirthan. My mothers schooling was in New Delhi. She has been a good orator as a student. One miraculous incident happened when she was 13. She had never visited Tirupathi before but suddenly one night she got up from sleep and narrated the description of the holy place in the form of a poem. Politician and actor Hema Malinis mother late Jaya Chakravarthy was their family friend in Delhi. Jaya Mami as they used to call her told my mothers parents that she is a sacred child and she is spiritually inclined and that her upbringing should be according to this special nature of the child. My mother has taken Jaya Mami as an ideal woman in her life, since she struggled to bring Hema Malini to the status of a film star. Similarly my mother brought us ( two girls) up by inculcating the best qualities in us. My mother faced the social stigma of having only two girlchildren, struggling hard to get us highly educated (I am a double post-grad and have may merit certificates) and she even brought three wayward girls to the right path. She is an artist, making good rangolis, etc. and has a passion for writing. She writes openly about the current social problems especially faced by girl children. She is a very good cook and on the whole a very simple person. Gayatri T. Rao Do you know of women in your family who you admire or have something to say about? At the computer electronics shop, he asked for a rat and said that he would pay them well for the same! The man at the counter was surprised and thought that he had got some crackpot as a customer that day. Just then he had caught and killed a rat from the ground floor shop and packed it up and gave it to him! Sujata shrieked when she saw the dead rat. She thought enough was enough. The problem was that she did not know Hindi at all. So it was difficult for her to explain things to him in a language he understood better. So she called Sharma and told him what happened. She requested, Sharmaji, he is good in household work. But his English is bad. Please get me a tutor from tomorrow who will teach me Hindi and Bihari English. A Bank in the Service of Community

Banks in India have taken their roles as corporate citizens in the right earnest, making community services as a part of their large scale of operations. Countless number of BPL familiesin the rural, semi-urban and urban areas small and medium business enterprises, differently-abled, women & children of the society have benefited through the yeomen service of Indian banks. State Bank of India is actively involved since 1973 in the nonprofit activity called Community Services Banking. All their branches and administrative offices throughout the country sponsor and participate in a large number of welfare activities and social causes. SBI involves itself in the education sector in a big way. It provides infrastructure to a number of schools including blackboards, ceiling fans, water purifiers etc. SBIs social intervention in the area of health awareness is a major CSR initiative of the bank. In Tamil Nadu their recent initiatives include provision of public vans cum ambulance to organizations/ hospitals engaged in cadaver transports and elimination of gastric problems. For the differently-abled, the Bank has established vocational training and facilities such as supplying special vehicles, providing Braille typewriters to the blind to name a few. SBI extended financial help by contributing towards the Chief Ministers Relief Fund to support the Tamil Nadu government as well as the Union Territory of Puduchery in their restoration work to organize food and shelter to people affected by the recent cyclone, Thane, which left a trail of disaster at Cuddalore, Marakkanam, Koonemedu, Neyveli and Puducherry. The seminar was attended by the likes of Shailaja Suman, Director Doordarshan Kendra, Jai Chandiram, IAWRT, President Indian Chapter, Kingshuk Nag, Editor of Times of India Hyderabad, Uma Sudhir, NDTV Correspondent and many more. Uma Sudhir showcased a series of news stories on a cotton farmers widow in a village near Warangal and her familys struggles to make ends meet. The audience also viewed Anupama Srinivasans documentaries like On My Own, On My Own Again both related to women who live on their own. I Wonder is another documentary by Anupama and it is based on children in rural areas, shown from their point of view. Talking about her documentaries, Anupama says When we make a film, there is a sense of aggression. We need to restore a sense of calm, dignity and humanity on to the screen. She adds that by aggressively portraying the character, it amounts to exploitation. Those who watch know that they are being manipulated. Samareh Sherafat, a political science research scholar at OU gave us a peep into her dissertation topic Representation of Womens Political and Social Identity in Iranian Cinema. She says that the political ideology in Iranian cinema has evolved over the years and based on that womens portraiture in this medium has changed accordingly. In other words, the political atmosphere of the era decides whether womens roles should be traditional, modern or even a mixture of both. Ask Jai Chandiram the aim of this seminar and she will say that it is meant to provide space for women documentary filmmakers. Such platforms focus on a wide range of work which does not tell us what is right or wrong. They are not in black and white, but rather in shades of grey. It is an excitement of watching something fresh and now it has become a unique space, adds Jai. Short films from around the world were also screened at the venue. Two women and a camera from Pakistan, Yup.. Its My Body from Indonesia, Intimacy from Hong Kong etc., are a few to speak of. The media students of OU also screened their short film based on the child bride theme. Farah is a well-to-do middle aged woman who runs her home, cooks and supervises the cleaning and other chores. However, no house help stays with her for long as she is so finicky about cleanliness. She dusts, swipes, sprays disinfectants and cleaners and practically uses a magnifying glass to inspect blots and blobs on different surfaces. She washes her hands about fifty times a day. She has gone to the extent of being paranoid about germs and infections and she is not the only one. Dettol and Savlon have become an integral part of our lives. There are many people who do not move out of the house without hand sanitization liquids.

Many will confess to first memories of Marina Beach being associated with Maanga, thengai, pattani sundal sold in baskets by young boys! Ice fruit was another delight. A visit to Bombay meant a trip to Paanch Gardens in Dadar to eat Pani Puri, Bhel and kulfi malai. These dishes were served in leaves placed on old newspaper. We really gorged on this without thinking about infections, cleanliness, hygiene and sanity. Sitting in the car in front of a hole in the wall eatery, I watched a sweaty man, Shankar who was making parothas right on the pavement. His hands and dress were not particularly clean but his output is a 1000 per day from 20 kgs of wheat flour. He uses an iron griddle that is cleaned daily with a mug of water and a coconut broom. He sells parothas with chutney, kurma, sambhar. People eat here or take it away. This place has not seen a lick of paint in heaven knows how many years. Similar dhaabas sprout on national highways and cater to hundreds of truck drivers, travelers and neighbourhood clients. Today if you asked me to have something in Marina, Paanch Garden or at a Dhaaba or wayside eateries, I would run a mile. Have I been brainwashed by the hygiene brigade, the anti-

germ product manufacturers? Is it true that there are infections lurking everywhere? Or, is it that our immunity levels are low? The Health department has tried to bring into some control those who work and sell food as most often, the handlers themselves are dormant sources of endemic diseases. There is also greater awareness about maintaining hygienic surroundings. In the West even your home and kitchen can come under the scanner of the health and social security powers that be. In the East, selling and eating food on the road, in markets and in the open is a common phenomenon. Lack of hygiene is just accepted at face value and the only concession that is made is served hot as a detractor of germs. Corruption and bribery can help to turn a blind eye to any transgressions in the fast food and mobile eatery trade. In such circumstances, it is certainly a moot question if we can bring and implement laws to counteract this spectre of infections and lack of hygiene in the catering services.

As you age a constant figure in your life is the doctor. The way we used to be with doctors and medical personne what we experience as silver citizens today is diametrically different. I have had my share of doctors then and no

My friends son was getting married. We were all in a procession when I caught sight of a tall, handsome man with an unruly shock of snow white hair. I know that man I declared fervently. Get real Mom! Not even in your dreams said my daughter as she saw the target of my attention. I was offended at the implication that at my age I would not know such a handsome hunk. I walked across and boldly addressed him, Excuse me! I seem to know you. Have we met before? Yes, we have. I am CRS and I admitted you

for treatment in the Hospital forstatus asthmaticus a couple of years ago. Gobsmacked, I came out of the medicated haze two years too late. Not to be blamed am I? I had last seen him in the ICU going for my jugular, literally, as he could not find a robust vein to give me intravenous fluids and medicines. I have always had a day to day relationship with the medical profession. I went through most common and uncommon complaints associated with infancy, childhood, puberty, womanhood and menopause

and now as a senior citizen my repertoire is getting wider. I am not a hypochondriac, but I just seem to be the target for every possible ailment personally or vicariously. Holidays were spent in the village. Lots of epidemics would be awaiting our arrival. A doctor lived in the nearby town, called Payalu, a pet name meaning a little boy in Tamizh. That he was pushing 70, balding, with patches of grassy grey hair and a two-day stubble on his face was another matter. Doctor would arrive in

a bullock cart withjingling bells announcing his arrival. He was dressed in a veshti, a thin muslin vest and a red gingham towel thrown over his shoulders. In his hands was a beaten up, tin biscuit box containing his betel leaf and its accoutrements. He would directly make for the wooden swing, sit down, move forward and backward a couple of times and gesture for a glass of water from the mud pot. Next was his requisition for some fresh betel leaves from the garden.

He would then dip into my grandfathers stash of aromatic Kumbakonam tobacco and betel-nut shavings and generate a good red chew. For the next half an hour, he would discuss harvest matters and village gossip. The mental image of a doctor is a well dressed professional with a medico bag containing all his equipment. Payalu Doctor used bags or briefcases only when he travelled overnight to the capital accompanying patients who needed hospitalisation.
